(others won't try)."Self control and inner strength often make a
fight unnecessary. This, combined withconcentration, suppleness and
mutual respect, are the starting points of Pencak silat astaught in
Jokotole. And that leads to the biggest victory of all: the victory
over yourself.
What is Pencak silat?Pencak silat is the umbrella term
forIndonesian martial arts. Because of the manyislands that make up
Indonesia, the Pencaksilat developed differently on every
island.Movements and positions were altered withthe environment in
mind. That way, everyregion developed its own style with its
ownspecifics. Experts can see in the way a personmoves where the
style is from.The Jokotole is a traditional Pencak silat stylefrom
the Madura island. In part because of thefiery and hard character
of the island's natives,the Pencak silat on Madura developed into
aneffective, fast and hard form of martial arts.
In the early eighties, Glenn Pennock, anIndonesian living in the
Netherlands, learnedabout the Jokotole. He then started teaching
itin the Netherlands. In the nineties, PaulRovers became "Kepala
Aliran" (guru). Themain school of the Jokotole is located
inHaarlem. There are also schools inKrommenie, Amsterdam-Zuid (USC)
andAmsterdam-West.
Pencak silat at the USCAt the USC, we teach Pencak silat to
studentsof all levels. The teacher is Michiel Wesseling.He's been
training in this style for 17 years andhas been a teacher for the
past few years. Hebecame third place winner at the
worldchampionships.
