This fascinating collection of letters traces theexchanges between a young subaltern on thefront, Gerard ‘Ged’ Garvin, and his mother andfather at home. Correspondence was eagerlyawaited by all. Ged savoured letters home like‘Jim Hawkins trickling the doubloons through hisfingers’. Equally, his mother and father at homewere always fearful that each letter they receivedwould be the last. In a letter J. L. Garvin sent tohis son on the 21 July 1916 he wrote: ‘Of coursethere’s no fresh letter from you and we didn’texpect it. But we hope, all the same, to get wordtomorrow . . .’ Ged was killed the very next day. He was just

twenty years old.

‘Classic . . . the definitive account of aerialcombat – full of passion and poetry’– Max Arthur, Independent

Sent to France with the Royal Flying Corps at justseventeen, and later a member of the famous 56Squadron, Cecil Lewis was an illustrious fighterpilot of the First World War. In this vivid andspirited account the author evocatively sets hislove of the skies and flying against his bitterexperience of the horrors of war as we follow hisprogress from France and the battlefields of theSomme, to his pioneering defence of Londonagainst deadly night time raids.

‘The Battle of the Somme’ is one of the mostfamous, and earliest, films of war ever made. Thefilm records the most disastrous day in thehistory of the British army - 1 July 1916 - and ithad a huge impact when it was shown in Britainduring the war. Yet this book is the first in-depthstudy of this historic film, and it is the first torelate it to the surviving battleground of theSomme. This painstaking exercise in historicalreconstruction will be compelling reading foreveryone who is interested in the Great War andthe Battle of the Somme.

The celebrated clash between the aristocratic andhot-headed Admiral Lord Charles Beresford andAdmiral Sir John Fisher, Britain’s greatest navalreformer, makes for riveting reading. Both men wished to be First Sea Lord. When theprize went to Fisher, Beresford was determined tounseat him. He plotted attacks in Parliament, leaked state secrets and courted public opinion. No one dared act against him until he over-stepped the mark victimising a rear-admiral. ACabinet inquiry dismissed the charges againstBeresford but failed to support either man. Fisherresigned and Beresford’s career was over. Adefinitive and authoritative account.

Seapower was crucial to the outcome of theSecond World War. The U-Boat campaign almostbrought Britain to her knees; the Arctic convoyskept Russia in the War; Pearl Harbor broughtAmerica into the conflict; allied naval supremacymade the D-Day landings possible. This book examines decisive roles in the war, 15key naval commanders of both sides. The authorcovers five British (Pound, Cunningham, Ramsay,Horton, Somerville) and five US admirals (King,Nimitz, Spruance, Halsey, Fletcher), three German(Raeder, Doenitz, Lutjens) three Japanese(Yamamato, Nagumo, Koga) and two French(Darlan, de la Borde). Compelling reading forNaval enthusiasts.

Bernard Edwards tells the factual historic story ofthe three convoys that Montsarrat based hisfamous novel on. The first two, Convoy OG 71sailed from Liverpool for Gibraltar in August1941 and Convoy HG 73, Gibraltar for Liverpoolin September 1941, suffered terrible losses andonly one U-Boat was damaged. The tables turnedduring December 1941 with the HG 76 convoyfrom Gibraltar. Commanded by Captain Walker,no less than five U-boats were sunk for the loss ofseven British ships. This book is a thrillingaccount of naval action played out in the mid-Atlantic.

The author, a young National Serviceman, wentto Korea with the 1st Battalion The WelchRegiment as part of the Commonwealth Division.Tasked with holding a line north of the 38thParallel, conditions were unimaginably grim dueto harsh weather and enemy action. Artillery exchanges were often fierce. TheChinese were a resourceful determined enemy, never missing a chance to edge forward even if itmeant serious casualties and fighting patrolsclashed regularly.

This graphic memoir is a no-holds-barredinsight into life at the sharp end and the thoughtsof an intelligent and resourceful young manunwittingly caught up in a desperate conflict.

No war crime trials were held after the KoreanWar but, as this book reveals, there is evidence ofsome 1,600 atrocities and war crimes against theUnited Nations troops. The bulk of the victimswere Americans but many British servicemenwere tortured, killed or unaccounted for.

Much of the carefully researched material in thisthought-provoking book is horrific but the starktruth is that those North Koreans and Chineseresponsible went unpunished. Many POWs werenot released until two years after the end ofhostilities. As the US Government insisted on anews black-out, questions are raised as to whathas been done to find the missing.

Nikolai Vasil'evich Sutiagin, the top-scoringSoviet air ace of the Korean War, flew his MiG-15in lethal dogfights against American Sabres andAustralian Meteors. He is credited with 22 'kills'.Yet the full story of his extraordinaryachievements has never been told. Only now, with the opening of Russian archives, can anauthoritative account of his wartime exploits bewritten. The authors use official records, thereminiscences of Sutiagin's comrades and hiswife's diary to reconstruct in vivid detail thecareer of one of the great fighter pilots.

As secretary to the Führer for the duration of theThird Reich, Christa Schroeder was perfectlyplaced to observe the actions and behaviour ofHitler, along with the most important figuressurrounding him. Her memoir does not fail todeliver fascinating insights: she notes Hitler’sbourgeois manners, his vehement abstemiousnessand his mood swings. She also reflects candidly onpolitical and military developments from theearliest days of the regime through its finalcollapse. This is, without any doubt, one of themost important primary sources from the pre-warand wartime period.

Heinz Linge worked with Adolf Hitler for a ten-year period from 1935 until the Führer’s death inMay 1945. During this time Linge was responsiblefor all aspects of Hitler’s household and wasconstantly by his side. Through anecdotes andobservations, Linge recounts intimate details ofHitler’s daily routine; his eating habits, hisfoibles, his sense of humour and his private lifewith Eva Braun. He also provides an eyewitnessaccount of events leading to that fateful day in theBerlin bunker: he was one of the last to leave thebunker and was responsible for guarding thedoor while Hitler killed himself.

Erwin Rommel, Hitler’s so-called ‘Desert Fox’, ispossibly the most famous German Field-Marshalof WWII. He is widely regarded as the one of themost skilled commanders of desert warfare and,in contrast to other leaders of Nazi Germany, isconsidered to have been a chivalrous andhumane officer. Rommel’s adjutant, Hans-Joachim Schraepler, was by his side in NorthAfrica for ten crucial months in 1940–41 and hisletters provide a unique picture of this period.Alongside his insights into the military campaignhe reflects on Rommel’s character: his dynamismand tactical skill, and the ‘cult of personality’which surrounded him.

In 1814, after two successive years of defeat inRussia and central Europe, Napoleon was facedwith the ultimate disaster - an Allied invasion ofFrance itself. The conduct of the intense, fast-moving campaign that followed has been widelyhailed as one of his greatest feats as a commander, yet it has rarely been described fully andobjectively. Andrew Uffindell, in this grippingand original study, reconstructs the campaign, reassesses Napoleon's military leadership andprovides a masterly account of a campaign thathelped shape modern Europe.

‘A highly recommended addition to libraries’.Napoleon.org

Bruce Bairnsfather (BB) was the mostfamous cartoonist of WW1 and hissoldier characters Old Bill, Bert and Alf,faced with sardonic good humoureverything that the Germans, the mudand their officers could throw at them. The cartoons reproduced in thiscollection were originally drawn for TheBystander, a popular weekly magazine,in the Great War. Their effect on thepublic was so dramatic that Bystandersales soared. The organisation decidedto publish the first 43 of his cartoons inan anthology called Fragments fromFrance. Published to conincide with the50th Anniversary of Bairnsfather’s deathin September, and acknowledging hiscontribution to the war in combinationwith raising funds for Help for Heroes.

The Carmarthenshire Battalionwas raised in 1914 as part ofKitchener’s expansion of theregular army by 500,000 men forthe duration of the Great War. Thefirst 200 recruits came from Bolton, strangely enough, but later theywere mainly drawn from theCounty and Wales. In 1915 theBattalion, part of 38 (Welsh)Division completed training andcrossed to France in December. The Battalion fought withdistinction notably at Givency,Mametz Wood and in the YpresSalient. In 1918 the Pals sufferedterrible losses at Ancre and theCanal du Nord. A worthy additionto the Pals series.

2nd Battalion of the Durham LightInfantry was brought up tostrength and went out to France inSeptember 1914, where it fought atthe Battle of the Aisne, beforemoving north to Flanders. In factthe battalion was in actionimmediately that war was declaredin August 1914, when adetachment based at South Shieldsboarded a German steamer on theRiver Tyne. The book includesmany unpublished letters anddiaries of both officers and menand photographs from theRegimental Archives as well as rollsof officers and men and a list ofgallantry awards.

During WW1 the British andCanadian armies recruited over50,000 men well below the Army's5ft 3ins height minimum to serve asfront-line soldiers. Eventually therewere over 20 British ‘Bantam’battalions and two Canadian. Theauthor contacted over 300 survivorsof the Bantams, to gather many first-hand accounts. This book describesthe patriotic fervour which enabledmass recruitment and theiroperations. English and ScottishBantams fought along the Sommefront, while Welsh Bantams helpedwin the Battle of Bourlon despitehideously large casualties. Soldiersfrom now-forgotten Canadian unitsalso served at Vimy Ridge and inlater battles.

The conception of the Pegasus engine in 1957upset all the conventions of aircraft design. It waspreviously usual for aircraft designers to seek asuitable engine, but this was an engine thatsought an aircraft. The aircraft that resulted wasthe famous Harrier that is still in front-lineservice with air forces around the worldincluding the RAF and US Marine Corps. Thisbook takes an in-depth look at the engine’soriginal design concept, initial production andflight testing. It then goes on to explain how thedevelopments and improvements have beenmade over the ensuing years and includesexperiences of operational combat flying, bothfrom land and sea.

This second of three volumes traces the history of72 Fighter Squadron during the second half ofWW2. The aircraft flown, operational personneland missions flown are fully described with first-hand accounts from pilots and both air andground crew. Having been operational in theEuropean theatre during the early years of WorldWar Two, the squadron moved to North Africa insupport of the Tunisian campaign and were re-equipped with the updated Spitfire IX in 1942.They then assisted the Allied 8th Army as itadvanced through Italy and France, being basedin Malta and Sicily prior to the invasions. Whenthe Germans surrendered they were sent toAustria. It was here that the Squadron disbanded.

6 Group was born out of the BritishCommonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP),which called for the formation of 25 CanadianSquadrons in Britain. The Canadian vision was ofa Canadian force operating independentlyalongside Bomber Command in the manner of theAmerican 8th, but skilful negotiating by theBritish resulted in Canadian Bomber squadronsoperating within the RAF under RAF control butfunded by Canada. On the 1st of January 1943most of the existing RCAF squadrons werebrought together on stations in North Yorkshireand County Durham to form 6 Group. By the endof the war 14 squadrons were operational and oneother had been posted to the Pathfinders. After anuncertain beginning the Group became anefficient and valuable contributor to BomberCommand's campaigns.

This is the third in the RomanConquests series and one of those withthe most obvious appeal. WhileRome was struggling for her verysurvival against the Carthaginians inthe Second Punic War, Philip V ofMacedon attempted to takeadvantage of their apparentvulnerability by allying withHannibal and declaring war. OnceCarthage was defeated, the Romanswere free to turn their full attentionto settling the score. The stage wasset for the clash of two of the mostsuccessful military systems of theancient world, the Roman legionsversus the Macedonian phalanx.

This first volume of an exciting newseries tells how Rome went from justanother Latin town under Etruscanrule to a free republic that graduallydominated all her Italian neighbours. The author describes three centuriesof desperate struggles for survivalagainst Italian neighbours andinvading armies from further abroad(including that of Pyrrhus of Epirus)and the Roman army that evolved toemerge triumphant. With suchformidable enemies so close to homeRome's survival, let alone hereventual greatness, was never aforegone conclusion.

A dying Alexander the Greatfamously bequeathed his hugeempire ‘to the strongest’, triggering along series of struggles between hisgenerals and governors over thesevast territories. Most of theseDiadochi (Successors) wereconsummate professionals who learnttheir trade under Alexander or hisfather, Philip. This volume studieshow they applied that experience onthe battlefield and on campaign.

In the battle at Culloden Moor on 16 April 1746the Jacobite cause was dealt a mortal blow. Thepower of the Highland clans was broken, and theimage of sword-wielding Highlanders charginginto a hail of lead delivered by the red-coatedbattalions of the Hanoverian army has passed intolegend. Yet our perception of this critical episodetends to be confused by mistaken, sometimespartisan views of the events on the battlefield. So,what really happened at Culloden? In thisfascinating and original book, a team of leadinghistorians and archaeologists reconsiders everyaspect of the battle.

The crucial part played by intelligence andespionage techniques - by spying – in Britainduring the Civil Wars and the Commonwealthhas rarely been studied, yet it is a key tounderstanding the dangerous politics and theopen warfare of those troubled times. In thisfascinating and original account, JulianWhitehead traces the rapid development ofintelligence techniques during this, one of themost confused and uncertain phases of Britishhistory.

This book is the first dedicated to the plight ofAllied servicewomen, female civilians and localwomen in Japanese captivity. It chronicles manydisturbing atrocities on both European and Asiansand their experiences after captue. It reveals howmany ended up in Japanese hands when theyshould have been evacuated. Also covered are thehardships of long marches and the sexualenslavement of white and native women (so called'Comfort Women').The book is testimony both tothe callous and cruel behaviour of the Japaneseand to the courage and fortitude of those whosuffered at their hands.

This is the moving story of a young man whofound himself along with thousands of hiscomrades in the nightmare of Japanese captivity.Unlike so many (it is said that one CommonwealthPOW died for every sleeper laid) Bill lived to tellthe tale. Indeed it is remarkable that this story hasnot been told before, so graphic are Bill'smemories of the hardships and horrors as well asthe courage and companionship. The book goes onto describe how the experiences of those yearshave affected his life since.

The Author was shot down in his Wellingtonbomber on his third operational mission.Captured shortly after he was interrogated inDulag Luft before being sent to Stalag Luft 1 onthe Baltic where he stayed from April toSeptember 1944. As the noose tightened onGermany, Tony and his fellow kriegies were kepton the move. He describes the increasingly harshconditions they all endured, including theinfamous Long March of the winter of 1945. Hetwice escaped, the second time successfullyreaching the Allied Second Army.

After the Dunkirk evacuation, many thousands ofBritish troops remained in France. Churchill, desperate to keep the French in the War, decidedto form a second BEF of these, reinforced by asecond Corps commanded by General AlanBrooke. He also ordered scarce RAF fightersquadrons to France. Had these been lost theBattle of Britain might have had a very differentresult. Realising the hopelessness of his missionBrooke delayed for as long as possible. This is thefascinating story of a disaster that could havebeen so much worse had Churchill had his way.

The latest in the acclaimed Over The Battlefieldseries this superbly illustrated book describes theattempted breakout from the Normandybridgehead by Dempsey’s 2nd Army in July 1944.

Using many previously unseen air photographsthe main narrative of this book spans the initialbreak-out by the British XXX Corps and VIIICorps from Caumont the armoured battles anddesperate German counter-attacks of 4 – 6August, the German defence of Estry and theirwithdrawal from Normandy. The book alsoexamines Monty’s refusal to seize Vire, thedisputed Anglo-American border and theBLUECOAT’s impact on the German Mortainoffensive.

Much has been written about Jochen Peiper, though it is unlikely he would have been heard ofoutside Germany but for the infamous massacrenear Malmedy, Belgium. Peiper is now reveredand generally accepted as a brilliant solider. Thismeticulously researched book explores Peiper’syouth, his career with the SS, the now famous trialof the officers and soldiers of the Leibstandarte.

Aware of the need to create more divisions for hisarmy and under constant pressure from HeinrichHimmler for more troops, Adolf Hitler chose thismoment to order the formation of a new SSPanzer corps. This meticulously researched bookdocuments the actions of the Corps throughoutthe last offensives of the war.

Steel Inferno provides a unique insight into theexperiences of 1st SS Panzer Corps, one of onlytwo units in the German Army which boreHitler’s name. Though the Allies could neverforget or forgive the attrocities the Wehrmachtand SS troops commited, many admired thePanzer Corps, and one compared fighting withthem to ‘fighting with tigers’.

This book describes the role played in the battle ofArnhem by the men of the Glider Pilot Regiment(GPR). The GPR were predominantly SNCOstrained to fly the assault gliders. From themoment they landed on Dutch soil they wereinvolved in the fierce fighting around theshrinking perimeter. Eventually the GPRsurvivors marked the escape route across theRhine for the battered remnants of 1st AirborneDivision. In so doing they suffered extensivelosses from which the Regiment never fullyrecovered. This book tells their story in the wordsof the men themselves.

'Shan' Hackett is remembered by his own andsucceeding generations for a variety ofachievements and attributes. A superb fightingsoldier, he served with the Trans-Jordan Force, had fought through North Africa and wasinvolved in the formation of the Long RangeDesert Group, the SAS and Popski's PrivateArmy. He went on to raise 4th Parachute Brigadewhich he commanded with flair at Arnhem wherehe was wounded and captured. He escaped andgot back to British lines. He rose to high rankfilling key command and staff appointments inthe British Army and NATO. This is his story.

The mist of poisonous gas that drifted across noman's land from the German trenches opposite theYpres salient on 22 April 1915 caused ghastlycasualties and suffering among the unprepareddefenders, and it opened up a huge seven-milegap in the defensive line. It also signalled thebeginning of a new and frightful era ofindustrialized warfare. John Lee's graphic andperceptive reassessment of this milestone in thehistory of the Great War is one of the few full-length studies of the event to have been publishedin recent times.

Harry Moon served on the Somme with the RoyalSussex before transferring to B Battalion MachineGun Corps in January 1917, (later the Tank Corps)to serve in MK IV Tanks. His first tank action wasat Messines and the 3rd Battle of Ypres followedin July 1917. After descriptions of fascines andwire clearing equipment trials he gives a thrillingaccount of the mass use of armour at Cambrai.Disaster was to follow at the attack on Fontaine-Notre-Dame on 23 November where there were70% casualties. A very rare Great War tankmemoir with many previously unseen photos.

The machine-gun is one of the iconic weapons ofthe Great War – indeed of the twentieth century.Yet it is also one of the most misunderstood.During a four-year war that generatedunprecedented casualties, the machine-gun stoodout as a key weapon. In the process it took on analmost legendary status that persists to thepresent day. Paul Cornish, in this authoritativeand carefully considered study, reconsiders thehistory of automatic firepower, and he describesin vivid detail its development during the FirstWorld War.

Few people over the last century arebetter qualified to discussleadership than Field MarshalBernard Montgomery. He does thisthrough case studies that includepolitical (for example Cromwell, deGaulle and Mao), military (Haig andWavell) and industrial figures suchas Nuffield. In his inimitable wayMonty analyses their leadershipqualities and it should come as nosurprise that he does not hesitate tohighlight perceived deficiencies!First published as The Path toLeadership in 1961, this editioncontains an additional andcontentious comparison of Churchilland Eisenhower. On 9 April 1940, the German ArmedForces seized Norway and Denmarkin an operation remarkable for itsprecision and boldness. TheChamberlain War Cabinet wascaught on the hop and respondedwith ineptitude. While this bookexamines the making of grandstrategy it is first and foremost thestory of this ill-fated campaign. Itdescribes the attempts of naval andmilitary commanders to respond todaily shifts in government policyand to grasp the methods of a newkind of enemy, one which seemedwilling to take extraordinary risksand which had regained a level oftactical mobility not seen sinceNapoleonic times.

British Military Medals traces thehistory of medals and gallantryawards from Elizabethan times tothe modern day and it features anexpert account of their design andproduction. Campaign and gallantrymedals are a key to understanding -and exploring - British and Imperialmilitary history, and to uncoveringthe careers and exploits ofindividual soldiers. For over 200years these awards have marked thewars, campaigns and battles foughtby British and Imperial forces acrossthe world.

The senior British generals of theVictorian era - men like Wolseley,Roberts, Gordon and Kitchener -were heroes of their time. Assoldiers, administrators andbattlefield commanders theyrepresented the empire at the heightof its power. But they were adisparate, sometimes fractiousgroup of men. They exhibited manyof the failings as well as thestrengths of the British army of thelate nineteenth-century. And now, when the Victorian period is beinglooked at more critically than before, the moment is right to reassess themas individuals and as soldiers.

When Robert Brundle took the SS Harmatris toRussia with Convoy PQ8 he was 47 years of age. Both ship and master had already sailed inconvoys across the North Atlantic and to SouthAfrica. The ship originally set sail on 27 November1941 to join convoy PQ6 but encountered a fiercestorm in which a lorry broke free in the hold andstarted a fierce blaze below decks. It was restowedand finally put to sea again on 26 December. Shewas now to join PQ8 and Brundle was electedConvoy Commodore. This book includes the fullstory of PQ8 and its many misfortunes. As a resultof his heroic efforts to preserve his ship and crewCaptain Brundle was awarded the OBE and theLloyds War Medal.

In this study of submarine warfare, the authorexplains why Winston Churchill wrote "the onlything that ever frightened me during the war wasthe U-Boat peril". Until it had been overcome, theAnglo-American entry into Europe in 1944 wouldhave been impossible. John Terraine concentrateson the combatants themselves, both German andAllied, but does not overlook the three mainfactors in the equation - the political, the militaryand the technological, as well as the intelligence, the weapons and the devices both sides employedin order to outwit each other. He also focuses onthe fighting men on either side, seeing the actionfrom "where it was at".

On 25 December 1943 the German battlecruiserScharnhorst slipped out of Altenfjord in Norwayto attack Artic convoy JW55B which wascarrying vital war supplies to the Soviet Union. But British naval intelligence knew of theScharnhorst's mission before she sailed and thevulnerable convoy was protected by a large RoyalNaval force including the battleship Duke of York.In effect the Scharnhorst was sailing into a trap. One of the most compelling naval dramas of theSecond World War had begun....A fast read with suprising twists and turns’.Casematepublishing.com

'I am just going outside and may be some time.'With these words, on 17 March 1912, CaptainOates walked out to his death in an Antarcticblizzard and won a place for himself in history as'a very gallant gentleman'. Yet, as Sue Limb andPatrick Cordingley reveal in this new edition oftheir classic biography of the man, there is muchmore to Captain Oates’s life than his final famousact of self-sacrifice. Their work is, as Sir RanulphFiennes noted, a ‘fascinating character study of aquintessential British hero'

Gunther Plüschow of the German Imperial Navyholds a unique place in history - during the FirstWorld War he was the only German prisoner ofwar ever to escape from the British mainland andmake it all the way back to the Fatherland. Yet,although his daring break for freedom in 1915 isastonishing in its own right, Plüschow was muchmore than simply an escaped POW. He was also afearless aviator who flew against the British andJapanese in the Far East, and he was an explorer. In Gunther Plüschow: Airman, Escaper, Explorer,Anton Rippon tells this extraordinary tale in vividdetail.

Already a diplomat and MP, Aubrey Herbert’seye-sight excluded him from military service in1914 but he attached himself unofficially to theIrish Guards and became an honorary Lieutenant.Wounded and briefly captured in the Retreat fromMons, he went on to Egypt before landing atGallipoli, where he personally arranged atemporary humanitarian truce. Later in Iraq, hisefforts to buy the release of the beleagueredBritish garrison at Kut failed. This acclaimedmemoir, originally published anonymously, describes his experiences, the characters he cameacross and benefits from a full Introduction andadditional entries.

Hitler's panzer armies spearheaded the blitzkriegon the Eastern Front. They played a key role inevery major campaign, not simply as tactical toolsbut also as operational weapons that shapedstrategy. Yet no previous study has concentratedon the history of these elite formations in the bitterstruggle against the Soviet Union. RobertKirchubel's absorbing and meticulously researchedaccount of the operational history of the panzerarmies fills this gap in the literature.

Drawing on rare and previously unpublishedphotographs accompanied by in-depth captions, the book reveals how the battle of Kursk was thebeginning of the end and how this led to the RedArmy recapturing huge areas of the Soviet Unionand bleeding white the German armies it struck. As the Red Army launched its long awaitedsummer offensive on June 1944, German forceswere forced to withdraw under the constanthammer blows of ground and aerialbombardments the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS,with diminishing resources, withdrew across adevastated Reich and fought out their last battlearound a devastated Berlin.

The unexpected arrival of Soviet troops at the endof January 1945 at the ancient fortress andgarrison town of Küstrin came as a tremendousshock to the German High Command - theSoviets were now only 50 miles from Berlin itself. The Red Army needed the vital road and railbridges passing through Küstrin for theirforthcoming assault on the capital, but floodingand their own high command's strategic blundersresulted in a sixty-day siege by two Soviet armieswhich totally destroyed the town. Tony Le Tissier,in this graphic and painstakingly researchedaccount, has recorded events in extraordinarydetail.

In this moving account the author describes hispart in the Battle for Hong Kong and his capture. In due course he was shipped to Japan in aJapanese ‘hell-ship’. In Japan he and his fellowPOWs were used as slave labour. Treatment wasbrutal and, although many died, the their spiritwas never broken. He experienced a majorearthquake and was on the receiving end of a B29fire raid. In August 1945 he witnessed theJapanese listening to their Emperor announce thesurrender. This highly readable and compellingmemoir contains a tribute to his Americanliberators.

One of the most remarkable episodes of WWIIwas the Nazi attempt to forge currency andtrigger the economic collapse of the Allies. In thisextraordinary memoir, the sole surviving Czechcounterfeiter Adolf Burger describes his wartimeexperiences as an inmate of several concentrationcamps and reveals how, under unthinkablecircumstances, he became part of the largestcounterfeiting operation the world has ever seen.Supported by hitherto unseen documentation andphotographs, this is a shocking account whichsheds fresh light on the calculated barbarity of theNazi war machine. The book served as the basisof the award-winning film The Counterfeiters.

Over 170,000 British Soldiers were taken prisonerby the Germans during the Great War. Prisoners ofthe Kaiser is the first book to comprehensivelyexamine the plight of those captured. Theveterans talk openly about their experiences, giving us a powerful insight into life behindbarbed wire over ninety years ago. Their storiesare perceptive, often heart-rending, sometimesfunny, and certainly poignant. Their words arecomplemented with a truly remarkable collectionof documents, illustrations and photographs.

The Great Boer War was one of the last romanticwars, pitting a sturdy, stubborn pioneer peoplefighting to establish the independence of theirtiny nation against the British Empire at its peakof power and self-confidence. It was fought in thebarren vastness of the South African veldt, and itproduced in almost equal measure extraordinaryfeats of personal heroism, unbelievable examplesof folly and stupidity, and many incidents ofhumour and tragedy. The Great Boer War is adefinitive history of a dramatic conflict by amaster story teller and historian.

This is the story of what Rudyard Kipling called‘the savage wars of peace’. Throughout QueenVictoria’s long reign there was not a single year inwhich, somewhere in the world, British soldierswere not fighting for her and her Empire. It tellsthe fascinating story of the little known andextraordinary small wars, and of the men whofought them. But, engrossing as these small warsare – and they bristle with bizarre, tragic andhumorous incident – it is the officers and menwho fought them that dominate the book.

Richard Temple Godman, a young officer in the5th Dragoon Guards, wrote letters to his familythroughout the Crimea campaign. He took part inthe Charge of the Heavy Brigade and innumerous other engagements, yet brought histhree horses back unscathed. Godman’sdispatches range from the pleasures of smokingTurkish tobacco and hunting wild dogs, to thepain of seeing friends and horses die from battleand disease. He writes scathingly about rivalriesbetween the Generals, inaccurate newspaperreports and medical inefficiency. His lettersprovide an unrivalled picture of what it wasreally like to be in the Crimea.

The British Army has seldom not been on activeservice during the 20th and early 21st centuries.General Strawson has updated his well reviewedGentlemen in Khaki to include its involvement inIraq, Sierra Leone, Kosovo and Afghanistan.Recognising that it is their courage, commitment, skill and perseverance he concentrates on thecommanders and Tommies. At the same time, rather than describing battles in detail, the authorfocuses on issues as the army’s size and structure, its lack of Government support and appropriateequipment. He pulls no punches and this is athought-provoking and informed book.

The Kempetai exercised virtually unlimitedpower throughout the Japanese Empire. Theauthor reveals their criminal and collaborationistnetworks. They ran the brutal POW gulag system, slave labour, including 'Comfort Women' drawnfrom all races. Their record of reprisals againstmilitary and civilians amounted to genocide on agrand scale. Of particular distaste are revelationsof ‘Maruta’ vivisection and biological andchemical experiments on live subjects. Theauthor’s disturbing text contains survivors’ firsthand testimonies about this most evilorganization. He examines how the guilty werebought to justice and the resulting claims forcompensation. Not for the faint hearted.

Hitler's attack on Poland in 1939 was the firstbrutal act in six years of world war, but thecampaign is often overshadowed by themomentous struggle that followed across the restof Europe. David Williamson, in this timely andthought-provoking study, reconstructs each stageof the battle in graphic detail. He looks at theprecarious situation of the Polish nation caughtbetween Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, reconsiders the pre-war policies of the otherEuropean powers, particularly France andBritain, and assesses the state of the opposingarmed forces before the Germans launchedOperation White.

The concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenauwas the site of the single largest mass murder inhistory. Over one million mainly Jewish men, women, and children were murdered in its gaschambers and countless more from disease andstarvation. Auschwitz Death Camp is a chillingpictorial record of this infamous establishment.Using some 250 photographs together withdetailed captions and accompanying text, itdescribes how people lived, worked and died atAuschwitz. The book covers the men whoconceived and constructed this killing machine, and how the camp provided a vast labour poolfor various industrial complexes erected in thevicinity.

The Soviet victory over the Germans at Stalingradwas decisive for the war on the Eastern Front andfor the Second World War as a whole, and thestory of the long, bitter battle on the banks of theVolga has fascinated historians ever since. While ithas been the subject of countless histories, memoirs and eyewitness accounts, the gruellingreality of the battle on the ground, in theshattered streets and buildings of the city, hasrarely been recorded photographically. And this isthe great strength of Nik Cornish's selection ofunforgettable images, in this fine Images of Waredition.

Hitler’s invasion of Poland in August 1939 wasthe first demonstration of Blitzkrieg tactics – theruthless use of armour, mobile infantry and airsupport. The brave but inferior Polish army wasoverwhelmed by this awesome display ofmilitary power. Official German photographersaccompanied the triumphant Nazi forces on theirvictorious advance which first seized the key partof Danzig and then Warsaw, all within onemonth. The Crushing of Poland captures the dramaand raw aggression of the Campaign inphotographs and full captions.‘If early WW2 history interests you then you’lllike this inexpensive reference source’.Military Machines International

Peter Stevens was a German-Jewish refugee whoescaped Nazi persecution as a teenager in 1933.He joined the RAF in 1939 and after eighteenmonths of pilot training he started flying bombingmissions against his own country. He completedtwenty-two missions before being shot down andtaken prisoner by the Nazis in September 1941. Toescape became his raison d'être and his greatadvantage was that he was in his native country. He was recaptured after each of his severalescapes, but the Nazis never realised his trueidentity. This is the story of a heavily conflictedyoung man, alone in a world that is in the midst ofdestruction. It is at once a sad yet uplifting tale ofthankless and unheralded heroism.

By the beginning of 1941 there was a fully fledgedPolish Air Force operating alongside the RAF.With 14 Squadrons it was larger than any other ofthe Air Forces from Nazi-occupied Europe. Over17,000 men and women passed through the ranksof the Polish Air Force while it was stationed inthe UK. They shot down 745 enemy aircraft, witha further 175 unconfirmed. They droppedthousands of bombs and laid hundreds of mines, flying 102,486 sorties and notching up a total of290, 895 operational flying hours. They achievedthis at a cost of 1,973 killed and 1,388 wounded. They won 342 British gallantry awards.

MacDonell's service career began in the 1930s.Shortly before the war he became a SquadronLeader and worked at the Air Ministry during thePhoney War. When hostilities commenced hebecame CO of No 64 Squadron. Awarded a DFC,he was given command of a squadron atLeconfield to train urgently required pilots.Eventually he was shot down over the EnglishChannel and rescued by a U-boat, this resulted ina lengthy period as a PoW in camps throughoutenemy occupied Europe and Germany. Duringthis period he was involved with the famous'Wooden Horse' escape and was eventually freedby advancing Russian troops.

Operation DRAGOON, the Allied landings in thesouth of France in August 1944, is often seen as asideshow supporting Operation OVERLORD, thecrucial D-Day landings in Normandy. And oftenthe operation is criticized as an expensivediversion of men and equipment from thestruggle against the German armies in Italy. Yet,as Anthony Tucker-Jones shows in his new in-depth study, Dragoon and the subsequent Alliedadvance across southern France were key stagesin the liberation of Europe, and the operation hadfar-reaching political and military ramifications.

The struggle of British, Commonwealth andAmerican-Chinese troops against the Japanese inBurma was one of the decisive campaigns of theSecond World War. British India was threatenedby the Japanese advance, the fate of the BritishEmpire in the East hung in the balance. Thetropical climate – dense malarial jungle infestedwith vermin and swept by monsoon rains – madethe fighting, for both sides, a remarkable feat ofarms. Yet the war in Burma rarely receives theattention it deserves. Roy C. Nesbit, in this highlyillustrated account, traces the entire course of thecampaign.

The glider-borne operation to capture PegasusBridge has an established place in the annals ofwarfare. It was a superbly daring, brilliantlyexecuted ‘coup de main’ assault. Equally bravewas the seizure of the Orne bridges by airborneforces and the defence against ferocious Germancounter attacks over a prolonged period. The author uses extensive personal accounts tocover events and operations from Ranville in theEast to Benouville in the West and the fiercefighting by 7th, 12th and 13th ParachuteBattalions and the Commandos and theWarwicks. Throughout the Second World War there had beena potentially lethal Trojan horse inside Britain;from Comrie in Northern Scotland, down toDevizes in Wiltshire, in every city, in every racecourse of any note, in every football ground, wereGerman POWs. Nearly a quarter of a million ofthem in fact; fit, virile young men, and a goodlynumber of them fanatical National Socialists. Nowwhat would these young men do if they werearmed and given a plan which transcended merelyescaping? This is the gripping story of theirabortive mass escape plan and the covertoperations that went with it.

On D-Day 6 June, 1944, a team of 55 SAS weredropped by parachute in enemy-occupied Francewith the task of disrupting the movement ofGerman reinforcements north against the Alliedinvasion of Normandy. Using hitherto classifieddocuments the author tells the full story ofOperation BULBASKET. He traced the survivingmain participants and, from their various butoften contradictory accounts and much carefuldetective work, has managed to piece togetherwhat really happened in those dramatic eightweeks. This has to be one of the most remarkableand controversial stories written about the SecondWorld War.

Report on Experience is an incisive and compellingmemoir, written by a quietly heroic author. Thisbrilliantly-written work provides an insight notjust into the mind of the author, but theprevailing attitudes of wartime Britain andEurope. In simple but effective prose, Mulgantraces the Allies’ path to World War II and thewidespread reluctance of the population to acceptthe reality of hostilities. Throughout, this is notjust a factual account but a story told poeticallywith spirit and insight. This new edition of thework has an introduction by the acclaimed SOEhistorian Professor M R D Foot, together with aforeword by John Mulgan’s son Richard.

Written by America’s leading authority, this is anobjective but sympathetic view of the difficulteconomic and political environment in whichBritish designers had to work, and benefits fromthe author’s ability to compare and contrast theUS Navy’s experience. Norman Friedman isrenowned for his ability to explain the policy andstrategy changes that drive design decisions, andhis latest book uses previously unpublishedmaterial to draw a new and convincing picture ofBritish naval policy over the previous seventyyears and more. Hugely successful withenthusiasts and professionals alike from its firstpublication in 2006, this is the book’s thirdedition.

The landing craft assault, or LCA, was one of theunsung heroes of the Second World War. It tookpart in practically every amphibious operationfrom Norway to Normandy and landed around400,000 men. This is the first book devoted to thishumble but essential craft. It examines its earlydevelopment, and describes its design andconstruction with plans that will be useful tomodellers and wargamers. It includes informationon the role of the crew and the techniques andtactics used in landings. Finally, it describes thepart it played in the many operations in which ittook part.

This is the story of the struggle for the control ofthe narrow seas of the Channel and the southernNorth Sea during the Second World War, told bySir Peter Scott who, as a MTB commander, sawaction against the enemy throughout the courseof the War. This book is much more than amemoir and tells the whole story of the wide-ranging conflict against the Germans, fought inthe congested waters of the Channel. Actionsagainst convoys and E-boats, often under theshadows of French cliffs, the attack on St Nazaire, and the defensive and offensive roles taken on byMTBs during the D-Day landings are just some ofthe events covered in the book.

No airforce in the Second World War would makemore use of captured planes than the Luftwaffe. With this in mind, Jean-Louis Roba has undergonea considerable amount of work in tracking downhundreds of aircraft used by the Luftwaffe andillustrating their uses, careers and eventual fates.More than just an account of the Luftwaffe’s use ofcaptured aircraft, the book debunks myths abouthow prepared the Germans were for war in 1939,and shows how important even such an unreliablesource of supplies as captured planes wouldbecome to the Luftwaffe. Translated into Englishfor the first time, Roba’s investigative work gives arare opportunity to see British and Americanplanes repainted in German colours and symbols.

The end of WWII was a remarkable period inmilitary and aviation history. The eclipse of thepiston-engine, the introduction of electronicdetection equipment, rockets and airborneweapons in previously unknown quantitieschanged the face of the air war and paved theway for post-war developments in aviationtechnology. Many details of this crucial phase ofthe war remained hidden for years in top-secretfiles, but in this fascinating new history ManfredGriehl makes use of recently declassified sources, alongside his own vast collection of photographs,to provide a fresh look at the story of theLuftwaffe.

This book is a riveting account told in ten bigchapters of the young RAF crews who flewLancasters in RAF Bomber Command from 1942to the end of the war in Europe. It is unique inthat the story is told using first person accountsfrom RAF aircrew and German night fightercrews who fought each other during raids onoccupied Europe and Germany from 1942onwards. There is reaction too from Germancivilians who survived amongst the rubble, carnage and fire in the towns and cities of theThirdReich as Bomber Command sought todestroy the enemy’s will to wage war.

Loos is a small mining town innorthern France. But in September1915, it was the centre of one of themost intense and bloody battles ofthe First World War with 60,000casualties. The intendedbreakthrough was not achievedalthough some 8,000 yards of enemytrench were captured. Yet if theinitial gains had been exploited thecourse of the war might have beendifferent. The author has gatheredmany survivors’ accounts anddiaries, including that of Sir JohnFrench, and through their wordsreveals a truly horrific tale lightenedby the heroism of the participants.

The first reaction to Leonard Sellersfascinating account of the spies whowere executed in the Tower ofLondon during the First World Waris likely to be one of amazement attheir ineptitude. Not one of themseems to have had any propertraining or any idea of how to setabout the job. This, of course raisesthe intriguing question: how manyothers were there who did knowwhat they were up to and managedto escape detection? Whether theydeserved their fate, or indeed theniche in history which this bookgives them, is for the reader todecide. What cannot be denied isthat their collected histories makeremarkable reading.

Illustrated with almost 200 official admiraltyphotographs, many previously unpublished, thisbook traces the development of Royal Naval shipdesign through a period of immense change. These years saw the gradual transition from sailsto steam and screw propulsion; from wood to steelconstruction; from fixed broadside armaments ofbronze muzzle-loaders to turret-mounted steelbreech-loaders and torpedoes. The period closeswith the launch of HMS Dreadnought, whichovernight rendered all existing ships obsolete.

The World Naval Review is designed to fill the needfor an authoritative but affordable summary of allthat has happened in the naval world in theprevious twelve months. It combines the standingfeatures of regional surveys with one-off majorarticles on noteworthy new ships and otherimportant developments. Intended to makeinteresting reading as well as providingauthoritative reference, there is a strong visualemphasis, including specially commissioneddrawings and the most recently releasedphotographs and artists’ impressions. For anyonewith an interest in contemporary naval affairs, whether an enthusiast or a defence professional, this annual is set to become required reading.

The seventeenth century saw the transformationof Britain from a minor state on the fringes ofEurope into a global economic power, whoseinterests were protected and promoted by thelargest navy in the world. The character of thisnavy was forged by a bloody civil war, threefiercely disputed conflicts with the Dutch, and thefirst of many wars with the French. With itsunique depth of information, this is a work of theutmost importance to every naval historian andgeneral reader interested in the navy of thesailing era.

Between 1939 and 1945 the Royal Navy’s Fleet AirArm grew from a small force into a powerfulstrategic weapon, and David Brown heredescribes their activities in the Home,Mediterranean, Eastern and British Pacific Fleets, together with Forces created for specificoperations; he then describes carrier operations inthe Pacific between 1941 and 1945, the greatestmaritime war in history. This new work containsmaterial from two published volumes, and from athird which remained unpublished at his death; itnow provides the most detailed single-volumeaccount currently available of British, Americanand Japanese carrier operations in World War II.

Set up in August 1905, the Royal Fleet Auxiliarywas originally a logistic support organization, part of the Navy proper but run on civilian lines, comprising a miscellaneous and veryunglamorous collection of colliers, store ships andharbour craft. Just over a century later it hasevolved beyond recognition: its ships compare insize, cost and sophistication with all but thelargest warships, and the RFA itself hasdeveloped into an essential arm of all threeServices. This book charts the veritable revolutionthat has overtaken the RFA since the end of theSecond World War. New technology andtechniques reflect the rapid growth in theimportance of logistics in modern warfare, whilethe broadening role of the RFA is to be seen in thehistory of its operations, many of them littleknown to the public.

The impact of the land girls cannot be ignored. Itwas not just that women were working and farmshad more women than men, women who were notpart of the family or, for some of them, had evenlived in the countryside before – but women werewearing trousers and filling in for men, some ofwhom would never return from war. For thewomen, their time as land girls changed their livesand how they viewed their own role in societyand the family. Using original interviews andphotographs from some of these land girls, historian Ann Kramer delves deeper than anyprevious study to understand the role of the landgirls both during and after the Second World War.

Of the many WW2 special forces units such asSAS, SBS, Phantom and Commandos, 30 AssaultUnit remains the most secretive and exclusive.Formed by Ian Fleming, 30 AU’s mission was topenetrate and operate behind enemy lines, capture by whatever means necessary vitalintelligence and feed it back to London where itcould be assimilated and acted upon. 30 AUincluded mavericks such as Patrick Dalzel-Job(the model for Fleming’s James Bond). The authorhas trawled archives and interviewed veterans topiece together the history of this elusive specialforces unit which achieved resultsdisproportionate to their size.

During this period the Regiment and its successorundertook overseas and operational tours inCyprus, Germany, Hong Kong, Borneo, Aden,Malta and Libya, Bahrain and Northern Ireland. This lavish and comprehensive book describes allthe Regular and Territorial Army battalions’activities and those of the LeicestershireCompanies in the Volunteer Battalions. It alsolists Honours and Gallantry Awards, Colonelsand Commanding Officers, and other invaluableRegimental information.

During the spring of 1941, on an isolated, indefensible airfield 55 miles from Baghdad agroup of poorly armed and outnumbered RAFairman equipped with obsolete aircraft, togetherwith a few soldiers, outfought the much largerand better equipped Iraqi forces who were aidedby the Germans and Italians. The engagementwould prove to be the first real defeat of theGermans in World War Two. This book is basedon the research into a wide range of official, academic and public sources. It uses reportedAmerican, British, German, Italian and Iraqidialogue to produce this remarkable account of athirty day war in Iraq in 1941, how it played outand how it set the scene for Iraq’s turbulentfuture which has come to haunt the West.

Campbell Muirhead kept a meticulous diary ofhis wartime RAF service from the day that he setforth to train as a pilot in Canada and the USA in1942 to the end of his wartime service with 12Squadron Bomber Command. The book isparticularly emotive as he wrote in the commonparlance of those wartime days and truly reflectsthe emotions, fears and feelings of those caughtup in that mighty conflict. His diligentobservations of life in the RAF from joining-up,crossing the Atlantic and training in the NewWorld bring back wartime life as it really was. Hisdescriptions of the perils of flying on bombingraids deep into the heart of Germany truly reflectthe many different aspects of life in a front-linesquadron in a way that can only be told by onewho was there.

Seventy-nine heavy bombers failed to return fromthe catastrophic raid on the industrial city ofLeipzig on the night of 19/29 February 1944.Some 420 aircrew were killed and a further 131became prisoners of war. It was at that time by farthe RAF’s most costly raid of World War II. Thisbook analyses what went wrong. From the outsetpoor navigational and meteorological briefingshad hindered the bombers attempts to locate thetarget and confusion reigned.

Until recently, there was little practical knowledgeof the ships of the distant past. We could onlysurmise as to the manner in which a Viking shipsailed or how fast a Greek trireme could be rowed. The building of accurate replicas over the pastgeneration has changed all that, and what hasbeen learnt about the ships and boats of ourancestors has radically changed our perceptions ofsailing and voyaging. This beautifully-illustratednew book charts those discoveries. A fascinatingwork which offers the most accessible view yet asto how the ships of our seafaring forebearsaffected the manner in which they traded, foughtand explored.

New techniques in injection moulding and resincasting have transformed the humble kit whichand resulted in a new form of the hobby, mid-waybetween traditional build-from-the-box and thetime-consuming demands of fabricatingeverything from scratch. The innovativetechniques now required are comprehensivelydemonstrated in this new manual which iswritten for those wishing to achieve the bestresults in the 1:700 to 1:350 range of scales, and itsstep-by-step approach takes the reader throughthe complete building of two models, one plasticand one resin.Written by an award-winning shipmodeller, it is a showcase for the modernapproach to the hobby.

Born the son of Admiral George Byng, John Byngseemed destined for a shining career in the Navy.He saw his first fleet action as a Captain'sServant, aged just 14, was Post Captain at 23 andby the outbreak of the Seven Years' War had risento Admiral of the Blue. But then his failure at theBattle of Minorca (20 May 1756) earned himaccusations of cowardice. His trial and executionwere the hottest topic of the day and hisreputation has never recovered. Chris Warereassesses Byng's whole career, untangling thepolitics surrounding his trial to see if his poorreputation is justified.

This new book documents the German invasionof Norway, focussing on the events at sea. Morethan most other campaigns of WWII, OperationWeserübung has been shrouded in mystery, legend and flawed knowledge. Strategic, politicaland legal issues were at best unclear, whilemilitary issues were dominated by risk; theGerman success was the result of improvisationand the application of available forces far beyondthe comprehension of British and Norwegianmilitary and civilian authorities

On the eve of Germany's surrender in May 1945,Grossadmiral Karl Dönitz commanded thousandsof loyal and active men of the U-boat service. Stillfully armed and unbroken in morale, enclaves ofthese men occupied bases stretching fromNorway to France, where cadres of U-boat menfought on in ports that defied besieging Alliedtroops to the last. At sea U-boats still operated ona war footing around Britain, the coasts of theUnited States and as far as Malaya. One of thelast but most dramatic acts of the naval war, thestory of how the surrender was handled hasnever been treated at length before. This bookuncovers much new material about the processitself and the ruthless aftermath for both thecrews and their boats.

Throughout World War II, German snipers wereobliged to carry a ’Scharfshützen Buch’ whichrecorded every kill. Each success noted had to beverified by a witness and signed by a superiorofficer. The journal of Sutkus is one of the onlysuch books to have survived the war. It recordsmore than 200 kills, placing him as one of thewar’s most successful snipers. A large part of hisjournal is reproduced for the first time here, providing a unique, up close and personal accountof sniping on the Eastern Front.

Jack Hinson never planned to become a deadlysniper. A prosperous and influential Kentuckyplantation owner in the 1850s, Hinson wasdevoted to raising his growing family andworking his land. Yet by 1865, Hinson had likelykilled more than one hundred men and hadsingle-handedly taken down an armed Uniontransport in his one-man war against Grant'sarmy and navy. By the end of the American CivilWar, the Union had committed infantry andcavalry from nine regiments and a speciallyequipped amphibious task force of marines tocapture Hinson. They never caught him. This is aunique sniper story previously untold.

The Anglo-American battle for the Geilenkirchensalient in November 1944 was infantry warfare atits worst, and it is described in vivid detail in thisnew edition of Ken Ford’s classic study. The onsetof winter saw the Allied advance from theNormandy beaches forced to a halt on Germany’sdoorstep. The clock had been put back to thedays of the Great War – the Allies had arrived atthe Siegfried Line and were forced to attack thefortifications from the hell of the trenches.

This record of varied and almostincessant action ranks among themost thrilling personal accounts ofthe war at sea. In Norway in 1940, assecond-in-command of a Black Swanclass sloop, the author experiencedthe nervous strain of operating in anarrow fjord under heavy air attack. His next task – in command first of acorvette and then a destroyer – wasescorting East Coast convoys againstthe menaces of E-boats, enemyaircraft and mines; he later took partin the landings at Anzio and theNormandy landings in 1944. Anunputdownable memoir.

This is the fascinating story of theAdmiralty’s Department ofMiscellaneous WeaponDevelopment, the so-called‘Wheezers and Dodgers’, and theingenious weapons and devices itinvented or perfected. Thedevelopment of these inventions, thetriumphs and disasters, is told withpanache and humour, whileimaginative and eccentric figuresemerge from every page.

One of only two survivors of thefamous Cockleshell Hero raid, BillSparks' war and post-war career hasnever before been told in full. In thisgripping book, he describes not onlyhis part in Operation FRANKTON,the daring Gironde raid, and hisescape back to Britain, but how hefought with the Greek SacredSquadron thereafter. Operating insmall groups they raided andliberated islands in the Aegean Sea.Always something of a militarymaverick, Bill's memoir is trulyaction-packed.

During the Second World War largenumbers of small fighting boatsfought in coastal waters all over theworld, be they German Schnellboote,Royal Naval MTBs and MGBs orAmerican PT boats. These 'little ships'developed a special kind of navalwarfare and acquired thebuccaneering spirit of an earlier agewith the close hand-to-hand battles.Bryan Cooper's book traces thehistory and development of thesecraft from their first limited use in theFirst World War and, in so doing, hecaptures the drama of this highlyindividual form of combat.

‘A thrilling account of the incredible assassinationconspiracy'Military Illustrated

On 20 July 1944, Claus von Stauffenberg flew tomeet Hitler at a military conference, held at theWolf’s Lair headquarters in East Prussia. Hecarried with him a briefcase containing twobombs. If he had been able to detonate bothbombs the Führer would have died and the warwould have ended. The complete story of thisplot, and other attempts on Hitler, are detailed indepth by the award-winning writer and journalistNigel Jones. His ground-breaking account takes innew material from conspirators’ relatives and thebook includes an Afterword by BertholdStauffenberg – the son of the would-be assassin.

The Swedish Red Cross expedition to the Germanconcentration camps in March–April 1945 was thelargest rescue effort inside Germany duringWWII. Sponsored by the Swedish Governmentand led by Count Bernadotte of Wisborg, themission became known for its distinctive buses. Each bus was purposefully painted entirely whiteexcept for the Red Cross emblem on the side sothat they would not be mistaken for militarytargets. This is the first book to tell the full storyof this remarkable and hazardous operation. Thefirst English edition of a Swedish-language work, this book includes new material from the PROand photographs of the bus journeys which havenever been published anywhere before.

In November 1939, the Nazis used the so-calledVenlo Incident as a pretext for invading theNetherlands. Following orders from Himmler, two British intelligence officers, Sigismund PayneBest and Richard Stevens, were captured from theCafé Backus in the town of Venlo. Best had beentrying to contact German officers plotting againstHitler. When Best met the three agents –including Walter Schellenberg – he was carryingwith him a list of British agents who wereworking in Europe. When he arrived at the café,which was just over the Dutch border, he realisedhe had walked into a trap. Hitler used theincident – together with the Elser bomb plot – asan excuse for war with the Netherlands. As NigelJones explains, the incident was crucial in makingthe British suspicious of dealings with anti-Hitlerresistance.

The German 88 mm guns became the mostfamous and feared artillery pieces of the SecondWorld War. They appeared in a whole series offorms ranging from anti-aircraft to anti-tank andtank-guns, including several self-propelledplatforms. Although primarily anti-aircraft gunsthey gained an awesome reputation as anti-tankweapons, a reputation that remains to this day.Terry Gander, in this in-depth, highly illustratedstudy, tells the story of the 88.

On 8 September 1944, the first V-2 rocket – theforerunner of the ballistic missile – landed inChiswick. Between then and 27 March 1945, morethan a thousand landed on British soil, killingnearly 3000 people and seriously injuringthousands more. Arriving at supersonic speed, without warning, they did enormous damage andhad a serious effect on morale. Usingcontemporary documents and protagonists'accounts Longmate tells the story of thisremarkable weapon, revealing the lengths theLuftwaffe went to in producing them, the damagethey caused and the enduring legacy of the rockettechnology

The Zeppelin threat spurred the Britishgovernment into creating the Royal Flying Corps, and it was this ‘menace’which led WinstonChurchill and the Royal Navy to bombing theseairships on the ground. Thus in 1914, the RoyalNaval Air Service pioneered strategic bombing. Moreover, through its efforts to extend its strikingrange in order to destroy Zeppelins in their homebases, the Royal Navy developed the first trueaircraft carriers. This gripping book, written bythe author of In the Service of the Sultan, is thestory of those largely forgotten early bombingraids.

The Siege of Malta during World War II was oneof the greatest dramas of the conflict. Bereft ofvital defending aircraft, guns and ammunitionthis small island endured a succession of air raidsfrom the Italian and German air forces. Valettawas virtually destroyed, the inhabitants took toliving in the hills and caves as their houses lay inruins. Food was scarce and the islands onlysalvation and survival depended on the arrival ofthe Allied convoys which themselves wereconstantly under attack as they dodged their wayacross hostile Mediterranean seas. This is a pulsating account of the young RAF andAmerican fighter boys who flew Spitfires,Hurricanes, Thunderbolts and Mustangs during1940-45. It is unique in that the story is told usingfirst person accounts from RAF, German andAmerican ‘Eagles’ who fought in the skies overEngland in the Battle of Britain in the summer of1940 and the great air offensives over occupied-Europe from 1942 onwards A host of incrediblefirst-hand accounts by British, Polish, Czech,German and American fighter pilots permeate theaction and describe the aerial battles as only theycan. This unique book also includes manyaccounts and photos that have not previouslybeen seen before.

After several years at sea, Sgt Bill Bailey arrivedin Cairo in 1942 as a new recruit to the RAF,hoping to fulfill his ambition to fly bombers.Within hours of his arrival he is sent on his firstbombing mission as second pilot in a 104Squadron Wellington. The aircraft was hit byenemy gunfire and suffered continual loss ofaltitude as it struggled to return to base. In thickcloud over a vast expanse of barren desert theaircraft hit a rock outcrop and disintegrated. Billcame too lying alone on a precipitous ledge andsoon realized that he was the sole survivor. If hewas to live he had to find help. To walk intemperatures of over 100 degrees provedimpossible, so he trudged over seemingly endlessdunes at dusk and dawn, his energy graduallyfading. This story of one man’s struggle tosurvive is an inspiring story.

Why was James Cook chosen to lead the Endeavourexpedition to the Pacific in 1768? As this new bookshows, by that date he had become supremely anduniquely qualified for the exacting tasks ofexploration. This was a period when who youwere and who you knew counted for more thanability, but Cook, through his own skills andapplication, rose up through the ranks of the Navyto become a remarkable seaman to whom men ofinfluence took notice; Generals such as Wolfe andpoliticians like Lord Egmont took his advice andrecognised his qualities. Highly readable anddisplaying much new research, this is animportant new book for Cook scholars andarmchair explorers alike

On 1 June 1666 a large but outnumbered Englishfleet engaged the Dutch off the mouth of theThames in a colossal battle that was to involvenearly 200 ships and last four days. Falseintelligence had led the English to divide theirfleet to meet a phantom threat from France andalthough the errant squadron rejoined on the finalday of the battle, it was not enough to redress thebalance. Like many a defeat, it sparkedcontroversy at the time, and has been the subjectof speculation and debate ever since. It makes fora thoroughly engrossing story, and one worthy ofthe greatest battle of the age of sail.

This new book, by the distinguished historianJonathan Dull, looks inside the workings of boththe Royal and the French navies of thistumultuous era, and compares the key elementsof the rival fleets. Through this balancedcomparison, Dull argues that Great Britain’s finaltriumph in a series of wars with France wasprimarily the result of superior financial andeconomic power. This accessible and highlyreadable account navigates the intricacies of theBritish and French wars in a way which will bothenlighten the scholar and fascinate the generalreader.

For a hundred and twenty years, the identity ofthe Whitechapel murderer known to us as Jackthe Ripper has both eluded us and spawned averitable industry of speculation. This booknames him. Mad doctors, Russian lunatics, bungling midwives, railway policemen, failedbarristers, weird artists, royal princes and white-eyed men. All of these and more have been put inthe frame for the Whitechapel murders. Whereingenious invention and conspiracy theories havefailed, common sense has floated out of thewindow. M.J. Trow, in this gripping historicalreinvestigation, cuts through the fog ofspeculation, fantasy and obsession that hasconcealed the identity of the most famous serialmurderer of all time.

To face a trial for murder must be a terrifyingprospect, all the more so when you know that youare innocent of the charge. How much morehorrific must it be then, when you know thatshould you be found guilty, the sentence must bethat you will lose your life at the end of a rope? All of the cases reviewed in this book involvedone or more individuals who were put on trial fortaking the life of a fellow human being.

Among the shocking cases of violent deathJonathan Oates reconstructs in this, the thirdvolume in his series on unsolved murders in thecapital, the killing of 5-year-old Eileen Lockhart, the strangulation of a young woman whose bodywas found in a bombed house in 1941, themysterious Cranford Park murder, theassassination of Countess Teresa Lubienska, andthe strangulation of Elizabeth Figgs who waspossibly the first victim of the Nudes Murderer. Also featured is a re-examination of the notoriouscase of Timothy Evans, the Welshman who washung in 1950 for the murder of his infantdaughter.

In this companion volume to his bestsellingUnsolved Murders of Victorian and EdwardianLondon, Jonathan Oates has selected over 20haunting, sometimes shocking cases from theperiod between the two world wars. Included arethe shooting of PC James Kelly in Gunnersbury, violent deaths associated with FenianConspiracies, the stabbing of the French acrobatMartial Lechevalier in Piccadilly, and, perhapsmost gruesome of all, the case of the unidentifiedbody parts found at Waterloo Station.
