Rembrandt Self-portrait
1630
Which design principle
seems to be the most
important in this self-portrait?
Some famous Surrealist artists are:Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Kay Sage, Frieda Kahlo, de Chirco and many others. Dali is the
most famous of the surreal artists.
Surrealism: a style in which fantastical visual imagery from the subconscious
mind, dreams and the imagination is used with no intention of making the work
logically comprehensible.
Balance of Love by Vitogoni
Surrealism means “beyond realism” so the
drawings represent reality as we visually experience
it.
•Surrealistic Techniques include
• Juxtapositioning of incongruent objects•Strong use of figure/ground relationships•Double imaging(this is where an image can be two things)•Distortion•Morphing of forms•Size placement/proportion•Themes and ideas do not have to be “creepy” or gory. Themes can be thought- provoking, communicating a message or idea.
This is an example of morphing- the hands and the spine turn into something else. This work also shows strong influence by Salvador Dali with the melting hands.
This work shows the use of stippling
to create value. Stippling provides
the greatest degree of control and
range of values pen working with pen
and ink.
Use of strong contrasts works well with pen
and ink drawings.
Once you complete your pen and ink drawing you may
choose to go back into the drawing and add
some graphite shading to model forms and create a 3-D effect.
