Austin Police Department District Representative Offers

Cautionary Advise In Re: Car Thefts

APD's representative for Austin's Central West District offered this piece of advice concerning recent car thefts in our neighborhood:

Greetings,There has been an increase in auto thefts in the area,

particularly around West Campus. In a large majority of them, keys were left in the vehicle. The Austin Police Dept asks that you be vigilant in making sure that you lock your vehicle, don't leave your keys in your vehicle, and that you also remove your belongings from your vehicle. If you own a scooter or motorcycle, make sure you take extra care to secure these vehicles. These simple actions can keep you from being a victim.

Thanks,Officer Will HarveyCentral West District [email protected]

What's in a name? A link to generations long past, reminding us that we are surrounded by avenues and boulevards serving as reminders of people who were loved, respected, and honored. They are individuals few if any of us know, but whose names we recognize every time we turn a corner. “Veer right from Wooldridge onto Harris,” we direct our friends, but who was Harris, and why would someone care enough to name a street after him? John Harris will come later. First, we shall reach

back to the 18th century, the Revolutionary War, and a man whose name represented the struggle to create a genuinely free America.

James Pemberton was born in 1723 into the Society of Friends—the Quakers—and into a history of resistance and commitment. His grandparents, Phineas and Phoebe Pemberton, had been invited by William Penn to leave the persecution suffered by Quakers in England and journey to Penn's new colony in America. James' father, Israel Pemberton, grew up to work for the establishment of peaceful relations with Pennsylvanian Indian tribes. Israel's son, James, a successful merchant, would carry on

on the pacifist tradition by joining with Thomas Paine and others to found the first Abolitionist society in America, the society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage. Later renamed the Pennsylvania Abolition Society, or POS, it litigated on behalf of free blacks and encouraged one of its presidents, Benjamin Franklin, to petition the Constitutional Convention and later the U.S. Congress to ban the international slave trade.

James Pemberton succeeded Franklin as president of the POS. He and fellow American Quakers worked together with British Quakers to weaken slavery in Pennsylvania with the goal of ultimately abolishing it. Their lobbying led to the prohibition by the Pennsylvania legislature of the construction of slave ships as well as the separation of slave families by more than 10 miles. The POS also promoted social and educational opportunities for freed slaves.

In addition to his anti-slavery activities, Pemberton co-founded the Pennsylvania Hospital and strenuously advocated for the rights of the poor. His pacifism extended to a refusal to fight against, first, the Delaware Indians and later against the British, resulting in his being exiled to Virginia in 1777.

James' descendant, Samuel Rhoads Fisher, would ultimately

Nighttime Patrols:

Each year, donations are solicited to pay the costs of hiring a security company to patrol our streets five nights a week. Those who feel strongly about maintaining this service should consider the following:• Approx. 100 households are currently donating to the Security

fund. For the patrols to continue, each must be willing to contribute an average of $25/mont or $300/year.

• The more homeowners that participate, the less expensive it is for each.

• If every current contributer asked only one of their neighbors to help support the fund, the cost for each contributer would be reduced to $150/year. That's $12.50/mo.

• Patrolers pass every home in the neighborhood several times each shift. We all benefit.

• Donations to security are kept in a separate fund and used only for patrols. PHNA membership dues are not a source of funding for security patrols.

Extra Benefits to Donors:• Are given the option of requesting immediate notification of

any issue concerning their property noticed during a patrol, such as open garage doors and gates, by providing address and phone number.

• Free Away-from-Home Service: Patroller will exit car and check around the exterior of the home daily to ensure all doors & windows are locked & secure. Homeowner can provide contact phone number if immediate notification is desired of anything of concern.

PAYING THE PRICE FOR NIGHTTIME PEACE OF MIND

leave Pennsylvania for Texas to became one of the signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Yet another descendant would start development on a section of farm land in small-town Austin. When searching for a name to give the area,, the family reached back to an ancestor from the 18th century who played a crucial role alongside America's founding fathers. Philanthropist, pacifist, and campaigner for human dignity-- James Pemberton gave us the best reason of all to be proud of living in Pemberton Heights.

“We had a great turnout at Pease Park last year and we hope to repeat that success this year,” said Andy Gill, the Conservancy’s executive director. “The ‘It’s My Park Day’ event is a great way for the people of Austin to express their appreciation for our wonderful park.”

The Conservancy will provide “It’s My Park Day” t-shirts to registered volunteers and refreshments to all volunteers who participate in this event at Pease Park.
