Background•European and Scandinavian countries have led the way in utilization of wood pellets for residential and commercial heating applications and is expanding the use of wood pellets for power generation.
•The result, EU is experiencing 20% annual growth in wood pellet demand. EU pellet consumption expected to hit 40 million tonnes annually by 2020.

Background•This did not happen overnight, but rather a result of years of work developing and refining the pellet manufacturing, pellet combustion equipment and pellet distribution and pellet certification systems.
•This led to wide spread acceptance of wood pellets as one of the best renewable, carbon neutral heating solutions in the EU.

Background•In North America, production and sales of wood pellets also began to appear but until recently the domestic pellet market was essentially for the residential supplementary space heating market.
•As a consequence, well over 90% of the 3 million tons of Canadian produced pellets are exported.

Recent Developments•In the last four years, significant progress has been made in Canada in the development of biomass heating projects.
•According to a 2012 CanBio report, 16 projects were completed between 2010-2011 while another 12 were under construction. 26 more were at various stages of planning.

-Four Viessmann Pyrotec KPT-1250 pellet-fired boilers (each rated at 1,250 kW) connected in cascade provides maximum boiler plant efficiency. -Viessmann boiler control system integrates seamlessly with Smart Heat Network controls which monitors the energy consumption data to optimize efficiency throughout the district heating system.

-Baldy Hughes Therapeutic Community began operations on their remote rural site in 2007.-It soon became apparent that meeting their heating requirements with their existing heating system in place would be costly.-In 2009 Del-Tech Energy installed a pellet fired boiler and district heating system on the site

Originally, it was estimated that the system would reduce the community's heating costs by approximately seventy percent annually, however, the system has exceeded these expectations by reducing heating costs by seventy five percent which equates to over $300,000 in annual savings over a five year period that can be used to support the operation of the Society.

-Over 100 year old historic structure, former two room school house now used as a community recreational and seniors centre-Previously heated with hot air oil fired furnace. Replaced with electric baseboard and unit heaters after flood in December 2010 destroyed the oil furnace. -New 56 kW pellet fired system with 3 ton bulk pellet storage bin installed March 2012-Approximately 6000 sq ft. heating area

-During the first year of operation, 9.62 tons of pellets were burned at a cost of $2287-Savings of $2200/year over heating with electric-Savings of $1923/year over oil per year-Low maintenance, emptied ash bin 3 times-Low particulate emissions, < 25mg per m3- Users warm and comfortable
