Pella Iowa Council #12334
October 2008
Grand Knights Message
Brother Knights,
Wow, our council sure had a busy September! Thanks for everyone who shared their time and talent to support our Church, youth, and community.
Last month we conducted our annual Knight of Columbus Soccer Kick Challenge. Over 150 youth participated again this year in our district level competition.
We also started our annual P.I.D. (People with intellectual disabilities) fund raising drive. The P.I.D. Drive supports the Christan Opportunity Center and special education programs here in Pella.
Most recently we served up our popular Steak Dinner which raises funds for several council projects.
Vivat Jesus!!!

September Meeting
During our business meeting we reviewed progress and finalized plans for our PID drive, Soccer Kick Challenge and Steak Dinner.
We also started making plans for upcoming projects, including AdoptAHighway and Pancake Breakfast for NCYC.
We read aloud a thank you card from Carol Laughlin and the 9th grade students. They appreciated receiving the Youth Bibles we purchased for them.
After the meeting we had some social time and played card games.

Steak Dinner
Thanks to everyone who came out recently to support our Steak Dinner fund raising event. It was a big success! We sold 115 dinners and raised hundreds of dollars to support upcoming projects.
Special thanks go out to Fermin Falcon and Mike Linde for organizing. Also, to Frank Walcyk for taking care of the groceries and to John Amelse for excellent publicity!
P.I.D. Tootsie Roll Drive
Our annual People with Intellectual Disabilities Fund Raiser was completed early this month.
We raised over $4,000 this year for local charities that support people with intellectual disabilities.
Thanks again to John Amelse for leading this project and to all the Knights and their families who supported this effort.
Soccer Kick Challenge
We recently sponsored the local and regional Soccer Kick Challenge at the Pella Soccer Complex.
Thanks to everyone who helped with the setup, judging and scoring.

Coming Events
Pancake Breakfast
We have scheduled dates for five pancake breakfasts.
We are planning on one per month, starting the last weekend in October.
Pancake breakfasts support sending youth from our parish to the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC).
Project Leader: Tom Duenwald
AdoptAHighway
We are planning to clean up our stretch of highway again this Fall. If anyone would like to help organize this project please contact Mike Linde. We need to firm up a date and recruit several volunteers.
Memorial Mass
Our annual memorial mass is scheduled for November 22nd this year.
We would like to see several Knights and Squires signup to help serve. Please contact Scott Eberts if you can help serve or if you have names of deceased to be recognized.
10 Year Anniversary
Our council will be 10 years old on November 30th this year. We are making plans to celebrate in a big way! If you have any suggestions, please pass them along to Sean Clark or Mike Linde.
Do you have a son between ages 10 – 18?
Squires meet the first Monday of each month. They run their own meetings and plan their own activities. This is a great opportunity for them to practice charity and learn leadership skills. They also know how to have fun!
The Squires are planning a fund raiser and some fun events this fall.
For more information please contact Greg Cairney @ 6201271.

Members of St Mary’s Catholic Church of Pella are meeting on the square in Pella on Saturday, October 18th at 9:00AM to participate in the Worldwide Rosary for Unborn Babies. The members will be praying a scriptural Rosary for an end to the surgical and non surgical killing of unborn babies. The public is invited to participate in this time of prayer. Opportunity will be given for Pastors and other Religious to pray their own congregational or faith tradition prayer. This event is being celebrated worldwide on this day, hoping the earth will be circled with multiple Rosaries and prayers within a 24 hr time period.
The public is invited to participate in this ministry of prayer.
Consider attending with your families, and anyone interested in being a part of the Scriptural Rosary (including children old enough) can see Nancy prior to the event @ 8:45 as it must start promptly at 9:00AM.
Also, encourage your friends and coworkers outside of our Parish to attend with you.

District Deputy Report
Gentlemen, it has been a very busy summer for all. Looking at all the activities you have been doing I want to say THANK YOU for all that you do for your council, church and communities. I see that our PID program has taken in more money this year than in the past, I am sure that our charities that we give to will appreciate all of your hard work. I am trying to get to each council as soon as I can for I have some awards to present to all of the councils in District 42. The election is coming soon . We need to get people out to vote. Remember, an assembly or council must never endorse a political candidate or party. But we can help by supporting the issues that the Knights of Columbus believe in. If there is anything I can do to help please let me know. Thanks Denny
