Approved Professional

Registration• Right experience and competence now have the

opportunity to become chartered individuals.

• On 23 October 2014, ICES received news that the

Engineering Council had approved plans to allow

members to apply for professional registration. From

autumn 2015, members will be able to apply for the

grades of chartered engineer (CEng), incorporated

engineer (IEng) and engineering technician (EngTech)

through the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), acting as

the licensing body for ICES members.

What is professional

registration?• offered by the Engineering Council of the United

Kingdom

• covers 35 professional engineering institutions

(PEI)

• total membership of almost 750,000

• 19 institutions termed professional affiliates (like

ICES), able to link to PEIs (as we have done

with the Institution of Civil Engineers) to offer

professional registration


CEng IEng EngTech –

What are they?

• The Engineering Council is an umbrella organisation

covering many different engineering disciplines as

diverse as refrigeration engineers and railway signaling

engineers, but closer to construction are environmental

engineers, civil engineers and highway engineers.


Chartered Engineer (CEng)

• Chartered engineers develop solutions to

engineering problems using new or

existing technologies, through innovation,

creativity and change


Incorporated Engineer (IEng)

• Incorporated engineers maintain and

manage applications of current and

developing technology, and may

undertake engineering design,

development, manufacture, construction

and operation


Engineering Technician

(EngTech)

• Engineering technicians apply proven

techniques and procedures to the solution

of practical engineering problems

Surveyor offered by RICS?

• The title chartered surveyor is the gift of the Royal

Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and it is for it

to determine the standards that this designation

represents

• The Engineering Council has a common engineering

standard across all its disciplines, the UK Standard for

Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC), so

this common standard is understood across all the

engineering professions.

• The Institution works with many employers (clients, consultants,

contractors, and subcontractors) to develop and implement training

programmes for their junior staff to structure and optimise the

acquisition of knowledge and experience during the early years

following graduation or entry into the industry.


What is ADS?

•an agreement between a company and the ICES that

defines the training, development and experience that will

be made available to a new entrant or established civil

engineering surveyor who wishes to gain a professional

qualification.

programme of development

•produced a complete set of competencies to describe the

knowledge, understanding and skills

BIM – the developing role of the surveyor

• BIM will be applied to structures, roads, airports, railways, ports and,

in fact anything constructed and part of the built environment

• Total environment of information management that will live beyond

construction and throughout the rest of the life of the asset.

• BIM protocols and procedures for data exchange by which

information required to develop, operate and manage an asset will

be available to everyone at the appropriate stages in the lifecycle of

the asset.

BIM – the developing role of the surveyor

• The surveyor has the only role that will contribute to the BIM throughout the

lifecycle of the asset

• Surveying is now a highly automated data collection process that allows

comprehensive and highly accurate datasets to be collected at a much

earlier stage in the project, GNSS, digital aerial imagery and LiDAR,

automated robotic total stations and 3D scanning have all made data

collection cheaper, more accurate and more comprehensive than ever

before.

• The cost of producing high accuracy survey datasets from this data has

shifted from the field data collection into the office with processing, data

abstraction and CAD modelling.

• The 3D point cloud, the product of the LiDAR and scanners when registered

to grid and datum, will likely become the source dataset underpinning the

future BIM.

“Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), complementary to conventional aerial survey?”

Mr David HUGHES

• Mr. David Hughes, MCInstCES, who is an internationally educated and highly experienced project manager, land and engineering surveyor and photogrammetrist with over 50 years of practical work experience largely in challenging countries of Africa, the Middle East and SE Asia as well as Europe and the Pacific area. He was an early adopter and promoter of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology to gather spatial and topographic data of small surface areas for planning purposes.

• Mr. Andy Chan, founding member of MHKIBIM, who is the first Autodesk certified BIM specialist: road and highway in Hong Kong and is now serving as project manager of Spatial Technology Limited, responsible for BIM project development and implementation for the civil infrastructure projects in HK. Through-out the last 10-years, Andy has successfully implemented BIM in various civil infrastructure projects, as well as assisting the Government departments and design consultants to re-engineer their workflows through pilot projects.
