Informed procurement choices can support sustainable forest management, help protect workers’ health and the rights of those who depend on forests for their livelihoods. Increasingly, those involved in public sector and corporate purchasing are setting ambitious targets which aim to eliminate deforestation from their supply chains. The recently published World Resources Institute and World Business Council for Sustainable Development Sustainable Procurement Guide for Wood and Paper-based Products helps procurement professionals make informed choices and understand the challenges involved in the development and implementation of procurement policies for paper, packaging and solid wood products. It identifies 10 key aspects, including legal, environmental and social issues, that underpin sustainable sourcing and provides resources to help tackle these challenges. Knowing your supply chain increases transparency and reduces risks. CPET Woodfuel Seminar

In May, James Jones & Sons – Scotland’s largest independent sawmiller – and Scottish Woodlands - the UK’s leading independent Forest Management Company – partnered with PEFC UK to host a field trip to the Scottish borders. The visit aimed to demonstrate sustainable forest management in action to more than twenty stakeholders from a broad range of sectors including public sector, forestry, timber trading, construction, retail, paper and packaging. This was the third year that PEFC has run this popular event.

The forest visit was followed by a tour of the James Jones & Sons sawmill in Lockerbie to see the processes involved in transforming a log into a range of sawn timber products.

These visits are designed to showcase Sustainable Forest Management, illustrate what Chain of Custody certification involves and demonstrate the rigorous processes involved in bringing certified wood products to market.

PEFC UK will not be hosting a stakeholder meeting this summer. This is because last month PEFC UK was accorded the honour of hosting the annual PEFC Members’ Meeting in London. We were delighted to welcome members of the ever growing PEFC family from more than twenty countries. This popular meeting enables delegates from PEFC-endorsed schemes around the world to come together to share experiences, celebrate successes, receive crucial training and debate key issues and technical matters which affect the development of PEFC’s global standards.

The meeting also incorporated a press event, attended by journalists from a broad range of industry sectors. PEFC International Chairman, William Street, PEFC’s Secretary General Ben Gunneberg shared a platform with Ana Belén Noriega from PEFC Spain and PEFC UK’s Alun Watkins to debate a range of issues. These included

the central role certified forests play in food production and the continuing growth and role of PEFC as a global not-for-profit organisation particularly in China and the Asia-Pacific region.

The PEFC Stakeholder Meeting will be back in 2016.

Earlier this month, PEFC UK held its 14th Annual General Meeting in London. In his farewell report, PEFC’s outgoing Chairman Hugh Miller, said that PEFC had made substantial progress and that there was much to

celebrate. He remarked that in less than two decades, PEFC has gone from an organisation of 11 national certification systems to 38 member countries and it is still growing. Today, two thirds of all certified forests globally are certified to PEFC and more than half of the world’s

traded sustainable forest products are sourced from forests certfied to PEFC-endorsed standards. Hugh was confident that the organisation was well placed to continue delivering on its mission to promote responsible forest management practices around the world.

The Board and staff of PEFC UK would like to wish Hugh a long, happy and relaxing retirement and thank him for his sage advice, knowledge of forestry and the time he has given so freely to help PEFC UK go from strength to strength.

Ross Bradshaw succeeds Hugh Miller as Chairman of PEFC UK. A profile of Ross will appear in the October issue of PEFC UK News.
