is classically described in literature. These plaques ofdepigmentation are a result of a permanent localizedabsence of melanocytes and melanosomes or reducednumbers of abnormally large melanocytes. It results frommutations in the KIT proto-oncogene, which encodes thecellular transmembrane tyrosinase kinase for mast/stemcell growth factor. This pattern of depigmentation isprobably due to defective melanocyte proliferation ormigration from the neural crest during development. Itshould be differentiated from vitiligo which is progressiveand Waardenberg syndrome which has heterochromic iris, dystopia canthorum, broad nasal root and congenital
deafness, in addition to white forelock andhypopigmentation. There are occasional reports ofpiebaldism associated with type 1 Neurofibromatosis andRubinstein Taybi syndrome.

Social PediatricsSATYA GUPTA, AP DUBEY
Paras Medical Publishers;Hyderabad, New Delhi1st Edition, 2011Pages: 387; Price: 250/-.
Pediatricians, as an academic andprofessional community, have always
been responsive to their wider roles and it is not merely acoincidence that they stay as some of the most visible andsuitably informed actors in the practice and politics ofPublic Health. In this historical context, one feels a bitsurprised that the domain of Social Pediatrics did notenjoy a fitting growth rate inspite of the exceptional legacyof leaders like Shanti Ghosh. This handy and readablebook comes as a booster while offering some consolidatedand handy text to the practitioners of pediatrics fromvaried settings. Uncomplicated mind maps in most of its33 chapters make the browsing very simple. It is equallycreditable that necessary theoretical and conceptual inputshave not been sacrificed while maintaining a practicaltenor. The flipside is non-uniformity of form and structureamongst chapters, and a few unclear photographs.Academic movements in Social Pediatrics have had aparoxysmal character. A single book is a single vote whichmay not make or break the establishments but one canhope that this attempt reignites a chain reaction for somepositive change.

The 10 Minute ClinicalAssessment - A ReviewKNUT SCHROEDER
UK: Wiley-Blackwell;Pages: 772;Price: Not mentioned.
This ‘Desk Top’ reference Bookconsisting of 154 selected clinical
situations is a treasure to be possessed by every practitionerfacilitating in making quick clinical assessment of thepatient’s illness based on the complaints and arrive at acorrect diagnosis for efficient management.
Though modern gadgets and sophisticatedinvestigative procedures are becoming abundant day byday, the importance of clinical assessment cannot beunderplayed. One of my professors during myundergraduate training five decades ago, rightly said that“diagnosis of respiratory system is by INSPECTION;diagnosis of gastrointestinal and hepatic system diseases isby PALPATION; diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases is byAUSCULTATION and diagnosis of central nervousneurological disorders is by MATHEMATICALCALCULATION”. This book enlightens this maxim in itswell written and well presented 18 chapters. This bookguides the reader to assess the patient’s complaints andsymptoms and signs in 10 minutes and arrive at a correctdiagnosis for accurate management, and refer if needed. This book guides the reader. I strongly recommend thisbook for a practicing doctor’s office.

Jaypee Brothers MedicalPublishers 2011, New Delhi.Pages: 438, Price: Rs 399/-.
This textbook reflects a simplifiedapproach to clinical cases in
Pediatrics. The information is essential for postgraduateclinical training, ward teaching rounds and preparation forclinical examinations. A significant section of the book ispresented in the form of tables, flowcharts, algorithms andtextboxes which makes the presentation of the bookimpressive. The book is written in a simple language and isreader friendly. Section 1 relates to commonly usedpediatric instruments, drugs, neonatal resuscitation, immunization and antibiotic therapy. Section 2 and 3pertain to the long and short cases in pediatrics forsummative evaluation. Section 4 includes invasivepediatric procedures, X-rays, arterial blood gasinterpretation, and national health programs. The topicshave been covered in a concise and informativemanner.Though the book is primarily written forpostgraduate students are useful for undergraduatestudents also. Future editions of the book should containmore images and illustrations demonstrating clinical signsand clinical maneuvers for better understanding. Irecommend this book as a ready reference material mainlyfor postgraduate students in pediatrics in examinationoriented preparation.

Radiology, Dermatology and Ophthalmology are worthmentioning. The last chapter on miscellaneous topicscontains various clinical signs, tests, cells, triads etc. It isan invaluable book especially just prior to clinical andtheory examinations and also viva. The book has beencompletely updated. It contains several charts and tables. There are several mnemonics and tips. The only drawbackis lack of adequate number of figures. The book will bevery useful for undergraduate and PG students andmedical college teachers.

Human mind eternally seeks forsolace in some sort of metaphysicalexperience. This may not be evidentfor the materialist mind, but is the
same for all. Indian philosophy is replete with suggestionsfor the need for such spiritual experience to make lifecomplete or even livable. Happiness is something we canattain by positive effort on our part. Very same principle, ina more metaphysical way, is given by Dr Manish Maladkarin his book. Each one of the 35 articles reflects a particularaspect of life and the importance of being harmonious insocial existence. Oft repeated quotations make us familiarwith thoughts of great people, who continue to inspire usthrough centuries. Maladkar reminds us that it does notmatter what happens to us but what matters it what we doabout what happens. Nobody can make you unhappywithout your consent. This interesting book may be takenas a source book for meditative practice. It needs moreconcentration and some sort of pensive mood. I doubtwhether happiness will be readily forthcoming from suchbooks. Being happy or unhappy is most oftentemperamental. If the book helps some to change theirtemperament, the author would have succeeded. I willconclude this review with another inspiring narration byMaladkar - God trying to solve the problems of a man bygiving him nectar of life in a golden pot, but he sees onlythe gold and not the nectar. Hope this does not happen withthis book.
