What is it?The PCCSDP will support research career development of pediatric intensivists who

have recently completed subspecialty training, and who are commencing basic

and/or clinical research relevant to improving outcomes, decreasing morbidity, and

minimizing disability in children who are survivors of pediatric critical care.

The goals of this initiative are to…

What is it? An effort to…• “expand the cadre of

investigators trained to advance research in pediatric critical care and to support educational institutions in their ability to stimulate novel research.”

Page 4: Pediatric Critical Care Scientist Development Program (PCCSDP) DHHS NIH/NICHD/NCMRR

IntentThe intent of the initiative is to stimulate pediatric critical care

research in the basic and clinical sciences that will improve long-term outcomes in children who

sustain critical illness and/or injury.

Page 5: Pediatric Critical Care Scientist Development Program (PCCSDP) DHHS NIH/NICHD/NCMRR

Why?• As the clinical, educational and administrative

agenda increases in critical care, time for fully trained intensivists to devote to research is in ever-shorter supply.

Page 6: Pediatric Critical Care Scientist Development Program (PCCSDP) DHHS NIH/NICHD/NCMRR

Why?-II• Direction of the

attention of pediatric intensivists at the junior faculty level toward rigorous research is vital to progress in pediatric medicine…FOR THE KIDS!!

Page 7: Pediatric Critical Care Scientist Development Program (PCCSDP) DHHS NIH/NICHD/NCMRR

What is the structure?• Candidates

• Commitment

• Process

Page 8: Pediatric Critical Care Scientist Development Program (PCCSDP) DHHS NIH/NICHD/NCMRR

Candidates• Support is for Junior Faculty• Mentors are crucial!• 4 Awards beginning in January (2005 and

each year)• Mentor bank is one of our goals!• 75% time in Phase I• 50-75% time in Phase II

Page 9: Pediatric Critical Care Scientist Development Program (PCCSDP) DHHS NIH/NICHD/NCMRR

We are looking for Stars!• And Dreamers, too!• And Committed

Departments• And Mentors• And institutions that

honor research as vital to the mission for children!

Page 10: Pediatric Critical Care Scientist Development Program (PCCSDP) DHHS NIH/NICHD/NCMRR

Commitment• Four to five years for the Candidate and the

Institution!• Movement toward independent funding• Oversight by a National Advisory

Committee

Page 11: Pediatric Critical Care Scientist Development Program (PCCSDP) DHHS NIH/NICHD/NCMRR

Process-I• Application instructions are on pedsccm.org• Email the Program Director, Mike Dean,

and make a time to discuss mentor choice.• Mike will help you broker the mentor deal!• Get the buy-in of your division

chief/chairman

Page 12: Pediatric Critical Care Scientist Development Program (PCCSDP) DHHS NIH/NICHD/NCMRR

Process-II• Applications are due on October 15th!• Commitment of the Donor Department• Commitment of the Recipient Department• Commitment of the Mentor• START your application Process-II

Page 13: Pediatric Critical Care Scientist Development Program (PCCSDP) DHHS NIH/NICHD/NCMRR

Process-III• You identify yourself as an applicant• You think about mentors with Dr. Dean.• You will spend Phase I, 75% research time where

your mentor is! (two years, sometimes three).• In Phase II, you will return to the institution where

you plan to spend your career.• Your Phase II institution MUST commit to you as

50-75% research time….BEFORE you are accepted!

Page 14: Pediatric Critical Care Scientist Development Program (PCCSDP) DHHS NIH/NICHD/NCMRR

Process-III• The institutions CAN be the same..but not a

prerequisite.• YOU commit to a research career, and turn in

your application by October 15th!• About 10 ( or more, or less) candidates or

departments are invited to our November retreat! Your expenses…help available!

• The National Advisory Committee interviews the candidates and selects the awardees!

Help Our PICU KIDS find the STARS!• Think hard about

research!• Email the NIH

whenever you need to! We love it!

• Remember, there are only a certain number of young pediatric intensivists…
