Month of June? It has been always associated as a wed-ding month or perhaps the opening of classes. But what is more important to celebrate on the month of June? By Virtue of Procla-mation No. 184 dated May 3, 1993, every month of June is being celebrated as National Kidney Month. And for this year the theme

was “ A healthy Lifestyle, Makes your Kidney Smile”. In celebration of the kidney month, our PPS-DSMC Presi-dent Dr. Gemma Tiu and Vice-President Dr. Maria Theresa V. Banes, both a pediatric nephrologist, launched the PPS-DSMC Child Advocacy project, Detection of Pro-teinuria among grade 4 students in Selected Public Schools, which was held last June 26, 2014 at San Roque

Elementary School, Inigo St. Obrero, Davao City. Also present on the said launching were PPS-DSMC members namely Dr. Allyne Aguelo, Dr. Delta Aguilar and Dr. Julie Rose C. Arrosas. The Project started with an awareness lecture to the se-

lected Grade 4 students of San Roque Elementary School by Dr.

Banes. The Lecture proceeded with the collection of urine sam-

ples by the students then submitted to the PPS Represen-

tatives for the dipstick screening. Out of 100 Students

screened, Only 2 revealed a positive proteinuria hence

subjected for further investigation. It is the aim of this child

advocacy project to detect early chronic renal disease at an

early stage through detection of proteinuria.

The Philippine Pediatric Society- Davao Southern Mindanao Chapter recently conducted a

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) at the Metro Davao Medical and Research Center

(MDMRC).

The one-day course was held last September 4, 2014 and was participated in by 27 doctors

and 33 nurses coming from Davao City and nearby towns. The faculty line up was composed of Da-

vao’s finest crop of pediatricians headed by the course organizer, Neonatologist Dr. Monina Padon-

Quiambao. Highlighted during the modules were the updates and differences between the old and

current NRP programs. A pre-test was given prior to the lectures to test the participants’ knowledge.

The lessons were then given in succession: Overview (by Dr. Joel Gallardo), Initial Steps of Resusci-

tation (by Dr. Jessica Anne Dumalag), Positive Pressure Ventilation (by Dr. Bianca Maglana), Chest

Compressions (by Dr. Marselle Lozano), Endotracheal Intubation (by Dr. Quiambao), Medications

(by Dr. Melanie Celeste), and Special Considerations and Ethics (by Dr. Janelle Gazmen). A post-

test was then given to correct wrong impressions and strengthen new learnings, concluded by a

“Mega Code” or simulations of ac-

tual situations. Each participant had

to pass both the post-test and the

Mega Code to earn the much-

coveted NRP ID.

The PPS-DSMC supports the anti-measles, rubella and polio mass immunization campaign by the Department of Health

By: Mervin E. Flavier, MD, DPPS

The Department of Health (DOH) has launched another campaign against the resurgence of measles and rubella cases and to maintain our status as a polio-free country. Since the start of the year, the measles, rubella and polio vaccination program has begun. However, the DOH has cited that from January up to July 2014 that there have been 44,666 cases of measles nationwide and that 91 of these cases have resulted to fatal outcomes (source: healthpromo.doh.gov.ph). The cases were attributed to the effects of natural disasters and emergencies that led to massive population movement. This is a follow up of the previous measles immunization campaigns (1998, 2004, 2007 and in 2011) that resulted in significant reduction in measles transmission noted in 2012. It was mentioned in the letter from the DOH Regional Office XI Director Abdul-lah B. Dumama Jr., MD, MPA, CESO IIIhowever that mea-sles cases have begun to spread in 2013 leading to some significant outbreaks that continued this year. Therefore the DOH launched a national Measles, Rubella and Oral Polio Vaccine Mass Immunization drive this month entitled as “Ligtas saTigdas at Polio, Magkaisa, Magpabakuna”. From September 1 to 30, 2014 the goal is to immunize a total of 13 million children under age 5 years nationwide and in Region XI about 600,000 eligible children. Families may avail of these vaccines for free. Regardless of previous immunization status, children be-tween 9 months to less than 5 years oldwill get a dose of Measles/ German Measles (Rubella) vaccine and zero (0) to below 5 years old will get two drops of Oral Polio Vac-cine in any local health unit. The DOH has also initiated house-to-house strategies to achieve the highest number of detecting unimmunized children and also give a second dose or booster for the rest. The objective is to reach 95% immunization to control measles and rubella transmission and maintain our country as polio-free. In line with this, the DOH Regional Office XI has requested the PPS-DSMC to assist by communi-cating this project to the different members so that we could advise our parents to bring their chil-dren to the nearest health center to receive free measles, rubella and polio vaccine or to receive it through the accredited health personnel of the DOH conducting the house-to-house vaccination. The mass immunization campaign was also mentioned in the radio station of ABS CBN DXAB 1296 Radyo Patrol Davao on September 14, 2014. In related news, members from the PPS-DSMC General Santos City District gave their support to the DOH through their assistance in providing the MR/Polio Vaccines to 100 five-year old pupils of the East Elementary School Kids and they also conducted PPD Screening to 42 pupils at the same school last September 12,2014

6..from page 16..I’m sure you’d be wondering about the web’s content. Just like any other web-page, it would include TRIVIA or INFORMATION corner which would tackle about health and medi-cal issues. INTEREST corner includes articles about hobbies, travel, restaurant reviews and other enthusiast’s opinion. Another corner is reserved for the FEATURE, which would be all about social issues. Also there would also be a page for Continuing Pediatric Development (CPD) in which we would be reading items from subspecialty courses in pediatrics. The most awaited part is the GAL-LERY section in which you can post any pictures you want to share with the PPS-DSMC family. With the upgrade we have now, everyone can access the cybernews using laptops, tablets and smart phones with just a click. If you are interested to share something valuable and worth read-ing, feel free to submit your article via our official Facebook account: Philippine Pediatric Society-Davao Southern Mindanao Chapter (Official). There would be no limit (as there is for the newspa-per). You can pour out all your sentiments provided that it is done appropriately and with social re-sponsibility.

Every other year, the PPS-DSMC conducts an interesting case presentation among the differ-

ent training hospitals of the chapter.

Last October 25, 2014 at DMS building Brokenshire Compound, Da-

vao City, 6 training hospitals of Davao Southern Mindanao Chapter com-

peted for the interesting case presentation. The Brokenshire Hospital

(BHIMI) presented a case of a Congenital Complete Heart Block and Perma-

nent pacemaker Implantation in a 35 week old neonate. Davao Medical

School Foundation presented a case entitled “The Fault on His

Stars” (Burkitt’s Lymphoma). On the Other Hand Davao Doctors Hospital

presented a case entiled Something Borrowed (Thanatophoric Dysplasia).

Disseminated Neuroblastoma was presented by Davao Regional Hospital in

Tagum City. San Pedro Hospital presented an interesting case of a Gastric

Duplication Cyst and lastly Southern Philippine Medical Center presented

“The Little Rascals” an Overt GI Bleeding secondary to heavy hookworm

infestation.

As in every contest there will only be one winner and we were fortu-

nate to have 3 distinguished judges from different fields of medicine other

than pediatrics to help us choose the best interesting case. We were grate-

ful to have Marie Janice S. Alcantara-Boquiren, MD,Jill R. Itable, MDand

Eugene Lee L. Barinaga, MD as Chairman of the Board of Judges.

All residents presented their cases well but only one stands out as

the best case. Kristina Mae Montebon, MD of SPMC was chosen as the best

presentor and she will represent the chapter in the PPS Annual Convention

this April 2015. The first runner up was awarded to Davao Doctors Hospital.

This year marks the Golden Founding Anniversary of the Department of Pediatrics of Southern Philip-

pines Medical Center (SPMC). One of its major activities for this year long celebration was Dangerous Ex-

tremes, a one half day seminar/workshop, held last August 9-10, 2014 at the Grand Ballroom of The Royal

Mandaya Hotel.Spearheaded by the overall chair, Dr Eleonor Du, the organizing committee came up with a

series of topics commonly encountered and pertinent to pediatric care. The speakers composed of their very

own subspecialists and other esteemed specialists from Manila.

In attendance were over 200 participants composed of general practitioners, family medicine specialists, pe-

diatricians, residents, nurses and allied health care professionals from Davao and from neighboring provinces

as far as General Santos City. They were welcomed by Dr. Michael Manalaysay, Chair of the SPMC Depart-

ment of Pediatrics, during the Opening Ceremonies. The keynote speaker was no other than the Medical

Center Chief of SPMC, Dr Leopoldo Vega, who gave a very pro-

found and inspiring talk on the journey of the then Davao Medical

Center, how it has grown infrastructurally, its developments and

how it became what it is now, Southern Philippines Medical Cen-

ter, dynamically changing and improving to be able to cater to the

needs of its patients. The highlight of this opening ceremony

was an AVP showing the SPMC Department of Pediatrics

through the years.

People inside the ballroom had mixed emotions as throwback

photographs come alive. Some who have been and who still are

part of the department felt nostalgic, some even teary eyed while

the younger ones were awe as 50 years of history unfold before

their very eyes.

The main focus of the 1st day of seminar/workshop were

newborns as Dr Joel Gallardo opened the afternoon session with

a talk about big and small babies (My Little Big Love) followed by

Dr Perlina Quitain's lecture on Kangaroo Mother Care (In the

arms of an Angel). Newborn screening (In Focus) lecture was

next wherein Dr Conchita Abarquez presented actual cases of

patients especially those diagnosed with Maple Syrup Urine Dis-

ease. During the merienda break, Dr Cerelyn Dacula, Pediatri-

cian and Microbiologist, talked about pediatric skin infections.

The afternoon session ended with a talk about hyper- and hypo-

glycemia (Too much or too little of a good thing) by Dr Eleonor

Du.

The second day kicked off with a case based and inter-

active workshop by guest nephrologist, Dr. Francisco Anacleto

Jr. on Dyskalemia. The morning session became even more

fruitful as Dr. Manalaysay gave a lecture on Over- and Under-

hydration.

The luncheon symposium was a back to back lecture on

Respiratory and Urinary Tract Infections by Drs Janet Bernardo

and Michael Manalaysay respectively.

The afternoon session on the second day was allotted for general topics such as Behavioral Ex-

tremes byDrs. Mervin Flavier&Christina R. Caguioa, Infectious and Non infectious Causes of Pneumonia by

Drs.Yadnee V. Estrera&Vivian A. Ancheta and GI problems, diarrhea and constipation by Dr. Ameleen B.

Bangayan.

As the seminar/workshop came to a close, the participants gained more knowledge in managing ex-

treme pediatric cases. Not only that, exciting raffle prizes were given out to those who stayed until the very

end. Dr Eleonor Du, in her closing remarks, expressed her gratitude to those who supported and attended

this event especially those coming from neighboring areas as well as to the organizing committee and the

sponsors for making this a meaningful and fruitful celebration of the department's 50th founding anniversary.

Kudos to the SPMC Department of Pediatrics and more power as you move forward to another 50 or more

years of quality pediatric care.
