We have all learned and grown so much. Hats off to each and everyone of you; students, faculty, staff, families, community members and partners. We celebrate and thank each of you for your hard work and dedication this school year! We do realize that it takes teamwork and each of us doing our part for the success of each of our students. As the year comes to a close, I would like to say ALOHA to our students and families leaving PHES this summer. To our Military students who will be moving and our 6th graders moving on to Middle School, may each of you find success as you continue your journey and we wish you the best in all you endeavor to do. We have been blessed to have each of you and will continue to consider you all ‘ohana’ of PHES. For those returning, enjoy your summer, be safe, relax, spend lots of time with families and loved ones, and we will see you back in school on Monday, August 7, 2017. Starting next week, we will be showing our appreciation for our teachers. They have worked tirelessly and continue to do all they can to ensure the success of our students. We would like to send a big MAHALO to all of our teachers! Last week we were able to celebrate the efforts of our front office staff. They are truly the face of PHES, and we appreciate their commitment and smiles! Mahalo to Ms. Joni, Ms. Iris, Ms. Courtney, and Ms. Andrea for all their support for our students and families. As we move forward, I would like to extend an invitation to all of you who would like to get involved here at PHES. There is no greater way to ensure your child’s success than by getting involved and helping in your child’s journey. Please contact Mrs. Shrum (PCNC) and Mrs. Carter (Transition Coordinator) for information on how your can be more involved and contribute to the achievement of our PHES students. We appreciate anything you are able to do for our school. Mahalo again for all you do! Be safe, keep smiling, and enjoy your summer! Kaipo Simpson Principal PHOTO CREDIT: Ms. McCord

Vice Principal’s Message Aloha Pearl Harbor Ohana,

As summer nears it’s a great opportunity to reflect on the great things your child has accomplished during the school year. Please spend some time discussing with your child the highlights of the school year along with talking about the areas they would like to improve upon for next school year. It’s important to have a balance of both fun and work, so please consider your options when planning out your child’s summer break. One such option is reading as reading is something we should all do on a daily basis.

We only have a few weeks left in the school year and it’s vital to finish the school year strong! Please remind your child to continue to work hard until the

very end of the school year. During this time we usually experience a spike in the amount of behavioral referrals to our counselors as students often forget to follow the school rules. Please remind your child about the importance of following the rules and why rules are needed both in and out of school.

Congratulations to all of our 6 th graders! We are very proud of your accomplishments here at PHES and wish you the best in all of your future endeavors. Please remember to always work hard and to never give up. I would also like to wish a fond aloha to those students and families who will be leaving PHES at the end of the school year.

I would like to thank our PHES teachers and staff for all of their hard work this school year in teaching our students.

The time and effort you put forth on a daily basis tremendously impacts our children and prepares them for the challenges ahead. Mahalo for all that you do!

Lastly, I would like to thank all of you for your continued efforts in working with your child and the school. The partnership between the home and the school can and does make a world of difference in the development of all children. I’ve enjoyed meeting with many of you during the school year and discussing your child’s progress both academically and socially. I hope all of you have a great May and an even better summer!!

Mahalo,

Mr. Kimo Ogino

PHES Teacher of the Year Mrs. Mizufuka-Oda Congratulations to Mrs. Mizufuka-Oda! She was nominated and voted as the Pearl Harbor Elementary School Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Mizufuka-Oda was a third grade teacher at our school before becoming one of our school’s curriculum coordinators. She works closely with our Kindergarten-Grade 3 teachers, helps coordinate teacher training, and is busy with many different groups including our GT program, Radford Complex curriculum coordinators, and much more. On top of her duties at our school, she is also very busy getting ready for baby Mizufuka-Oda. We appreciate everything she does for our school, and for always keeping our students and student achievement at the forefront.

Green Sharks News This year, the Green Sharks implemented a food waste management program (sorting food for

composting and worm composting). We also harvested many plants from our garden, including taro, kale, spinach, tomatoes, bananas, and sweet

potatoes. We had visits from the B.E.A.C.H. organization; they taught us about the plight of sea turtles due to plastic in the ocean. Honolulu Honey Company and some of their bees visited us, and from them we learned how important bees are and what kinds of plants attract them; we also sampled some ono honey! For the 3rd year in a row, we entered a bottle cap mural in the Kokua Hawai’i Foundations “Plastic Free” contest. To end the year, we celebrated Earth month (April), with a garden party; thank you to the families who came out to help us in the garden! Please remember to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle! Aloha until next year! The Green Sharks
