El Rodeo Mexican Restaurant, Hwy. 97, Chiloquin NEW HOURS! We are now open 7 days a week beginning Monday, april 8th, 2013. Welcoming spring and summer, we will once again be open on Mondays!!! Thank you for your continued support and we hope to see you soon! Rigoberto & Marina Hernandez

Volunteers Needed. Chiloquin Visions In Progress (CVIPS) has organized an Auxiliary to advance projects and community development events. Please join us in this wonderful opportunity to meet the friendly people of your community having fun and giving back. There are all kinds of ways you may volunteer from light office/receptionist duties to baking brownies, to helping with the bingo nights, etc. All help is welcome big or small, frequent or infrequent. For more information please call Peg at 541-783-3338 or the Community Center Manager (Wolf) at 541-783-7780. We hope to hear from you, thank you.

There is a change in the format of Friday's exercise class. Jean will no longer be leading the fitness class due to illness (hopefully sometime in the future she will be able to add back the extra day). Join the group at the community center for a brisk walk beginning at 9:30 (weather permitting). Tuesday’s class will remain the same.

To all citizens, Sheriff Frank Skrah is asking for our attendance at 1:00 PM at the County Building, 2nd floor, 305 Main St., Klamath Falls, on April 9th. It is very important for as many of us as possible to be there in support of our sheriff. Many are saying we need law enforcement in our area. This meeting is of course, about funding!!! If you have the time and are interested in what you can do to help, just showing up will say a lot to the commissioners. Thank you for your support Mayor Patricia Twamley

The Chiloquin Ranger District of the Fremont-Winema National Forest is holding an informational public meeting on Thursday, April 11 to discuss the upcoming prescribed burn activities scheduled for the Ninemile Fuels Reduction Project area. The majority of the project area is located within a few miles to the north and south of mileposts five and twelve on the Sprague River Road. The Environmental Analysis for the Ninemile Fuels Reduction Project was signed in August 2004. The Sprague River Valley community, adjacent to the project area, is identified as a community at risk for a stand replacement wildfire in accordance with the Healthy Forests Restoration Act (HFRA) and the National Fire Plan (NFP). The prescribed fire treatments in the project area will reduce hazardous fuels through underburning. It will also reduce the risk of insect and disease outbreak, recycle nutrients that increase soil productivity and improve wildlife habitat. At this informational meeting, Forest Service staff will explain why prescribed fire is one of the tools being used to treat the Ninemile Fuels Reduction Project area and where prescribed fire is going to be introduced. Maps will be available and fire staff will be in attendance to answer questions. WHERE: Chiloquin Community Center, 140 South 1st Ave., Chiloquin, OR WHEN: Thursday, April 11 at 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Two Rivers Gallery began this year with good news. In addition to rewarding us handsomely for volunteering at the event in Ft. Klamath last fall, Cycle Oregon also awarded us a grant to update our technology. That will mean a new computer and printer, a new surveillance system, a website redo to make it mobile friendly, and a new system for accepting credit cards, that will save us some of the myriad of bank fees that goes along with accepting credit cards. In case you hadn’t heard about it, TRVA provided the beer garden monitors, a list of entertainers, and took over as community manager for the Cycle Oregon stop in Ft. Klamath when the original manager had to leave the area. It was fun. Two thousand cyclists and the huge support system that goes along with them, is not something that we see very often in this quiet place. Even without Cycle Oregon though, we did end last year in the black! (just). That doesn’t really reflect great sales so much as a realistic budget to start off with and a considerable tightening of the collective belt. Much as we would like to lower it, we have had to keep the commission rate at 35% again this year, and the membership fee at $35. Membership fees are due by May 1st, and we are happy to take checks any time now. There is a renewal form attached to the end of this newsletter. Remember though that you can reduce your commission by volunteering. Even ½ day a month will get you a little reward. It was very difficult to find volunteers during this cold, icy winter that we have just been through and because of that the Board of Directors had to put some new policies in place that allow an individual more than 4 days/month of volunteering if no one else answers a plea for help. Still, none of us really want to work more than 4 days/month, so a bigger volunteer pool would be wonderful. With summer hours starting next month and the need to be open 7 days/week, it’s even more crucial that we increase our volunteer pool.

While we did get the Cycle Oregon grant, the grant that we applied for to get a new sign for the gallery did not come through, so Charlie and Joan made one. Charlie made the frame, and Joan did a glass mosaic. There had been nothing to identify the gallery to visitors driving into town – problem solved. The Annual General Meeting will be held on May 15th at 11 AM immediately following the May Board Meeting in the classroom at Two Rivers Gallery. Please join us. We have the 2013 slate of Directors and Officers to elect and a revision of the bylaws to be approved by the membership. The AGM will be followed by a potluck lunch, so bring a dish to share. You are always welcome to attend the monthly Board meetings as well. If fact, we would like to increase the number of Directors that are currently serving. We still have 2 vacant positions

that we’d like to fill. The easiest way to find out what is involved is to sit in on a Board meeting. Thanks to you all for your support of the gallery this past year, TRVA Board of Directors

Everyone Welcome!

As part of a vision to involve the community in conservation, Klamath Lake Land Trust (KLLT) arranges public hikes into lesser known and rarely visited natural areas of the region. These events are usually led by an informed naturalist, giving people opportunity to learn about local ecology and the value of natural land conservation. The events are free and open to both KLLT members and the general public. For more information on the Land Trust or to RSVP for any of its outings, call 541-884-1053 or visit www.klamathlakelandtrust.org/Events.html The 2013 hike series is developed in partnership with the Great Outdoors Alliance in Klamath County, and funded in part through the Charlotte Martin Foundation and the Intermountain West Joint Venture. April 27th: Wildflowers and vernal pools of the Keno area and Klamath Canyon. A series of short hikes at locations around Keno with a local biologist highlighting vernal pools and wildflowers. May 18th: Guided Nature hike with a local biologist to explore wildlfowers of Klamath County's Badlands, near Trout Creek between Klamath Falls and Sprague River. A Moderate to Strenuous hike.

"Faces of the people and all that they cherish" is the main theme of Glenda Lehrman's paintings. She is most widely known for her Native American portraits and character studies in Oil and Pastel. This is reflective of her own heritage, being of Shasta Indian decent. Glenda's love of painting is shown in her ability to create a life like image on canvas or paper. She also loves the challenge of being able to capture a moment in time, all the beauty that she sees in God's creation, in scenery, animals, and especially horses. Glenda grew up on a farm in the Spring Lake area at the foot of Klamath Hills. She and her husband Skip, now enjoy living there. The beauty of the area, the abundance of farm animals, and wildlife provide constant inspiration to express her art. Glenda has developed her own unique style from the many classes and workshops she has taken from fine artists through the years. In recent years Glenda has been attending a Christian Artist's Conference at the Box R ranch and has had the opportunity to take workshops with several well-known, top Christian artists of our day. It has been an exciting new dynamic in her paintings. Commission paintings of loved ones, or creating that "special painting just for you" is also a part of what she enjoys doing.

FCE (Family and Community Education) Meetings are the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 9:30. Meetings are open to all. We have a pot luck each month along with the lessons presented by a member. For the location and directions to the next meeting, please call Sandie Bolyard at 541-892-2336. Locally, FCE raises money for college scholarships for our Chiloquin High School Seniors. Money is raised through fund-raising projects such as a Thanksgiving turkey dinner fixings raffle with tickets being sold at Kirchers Hardware; Christmas Boutique at the Chiloquin Community Center; Kaleidoscope of Learning at Mazama High School in Klamath Falls. We are very active in our community and you will find FCE volunteers at many local events. Oregon FCE is a non-profit organization of volunteers who have worked on such issues as improving sanitary requirements in hospitals, women’s labor laws, requirements for high school teachers, and funding for the state library. Nationally, we began the school hot lunch program and pushed for bookmobile libraries. FCE asked for and got money from the legislature to fund an OSU research study on the dental caries problem in Oregon. We’ve studied our county governments and monitored their activities; worked on county and state fair boards to improve their quality; sponsored programs on rural road safety, farm safety, home safety, bike safety, Defensive Driving courses, campaigns to get the drunk drivers off the road, and child seatbelt laws. Current educational programs focus on the environment, children and television, literacy, and global issues. Current concerns include addressing the growing need for food banks, for shelters for the homeless, and for reducing the violence against women and children. Oregon FCE members donate thousands of volunteer hours and dollars to these causes.

Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Storytime: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help. Story time is at Thursday 3 PM during the school year. 2. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 3. Honor collections: these are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 4. Help with sorting donations. 5. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 783-3315.

Chiloquin Visions in Progress (CVIP) CVIP operates the Chiloquin Community Center, the Chiloquin Learns After School program, the Writer in Residence Program, and is the contact point for the Chiloquin Area Community Resource Committees and their projects. We have a volunteer list in the office where you can sign up to be available for many different “jobs” and projects. Call 783-7780 between 10 AM and 2 PM weekdays for further information. If you would like to get further involved, attend a Board meeting, held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 6PM in the Community Center conference room.
