2020 Annual Report Dear Friend, We all deserve peace at the end of life: with time and space for comfort, support and dignity — and to concentrate on quality of life and meeting emotional and spiritual needs of the person who is dying and their loved ones. Peace at the end of life is the faithful focus of Caring House. The generous sup- port of our donors and volunteers makes it possible to maintain that focus. 2020, our fourth full year of operations, brought a major challenge – the COV- ID-19 pandemic. While COVID-19 caused us to be empty for a couple of months, we reopened on June 1 and maintained our focus on peace at the end of life, while protecting the safety of our residents, visitors and staff. We weren’t able to welcome as many residents as in 2019, and also found that our residents and families were less able to help cover their costs of care. So we depended on do- nated dollars more than ever. Your support honors the work of Caring House. On behalf of the many residents and families whose lives have been and will be touched by your support, thank you! Sincerely, Edward W. Long, JD President and volunteer Volunteers Make Us Strong The safety precautions during the COVID-19 pandemic have meant that we could not have volunteers inside Caring House. Even so, our dedicated and caring volun- teers adjusted their efforts and teamed to give 5,149 hours of their time and energy. That’s more than 14 hours per day, seven days a week. That’s a gift in support of our residents and their families valued at more than $140,000 (based on Inde- pendent Sector’s 2020 value of volunteer hours). We’re looking for additional capable and caring volunteers. See: yourcaringhouse.org/volunteer Leader for the Future We’re pleased to announce that we have hired Jon Mesko as our first paid Execu- tive Director. Jon joined our team in January 2021 and is our leader for the future. He is well known in the South Bay for his leadership and organizational develop- ment skills. He has built several businesses, ranging in size from one staff mem- ber up to a team of 700, and strongly believes that more human connection and empathy is key to greater fulfilment for all. He brings to Caring House a high level of energy and a passion to serve the community. Volunteers Ed and Patty Long, who have served as the senior staff since the beginning of Caring House, plan to stay involved to support Jon and the team. Kind words . . .

I want to thank each of the wonder-ful people who so lovingly took care of my beloved George Mayol. You made a heartbreaking dreadful time survivable. We always knew George was in competent and caring hands. You went out of your way to accom-modate our family, and we appreci-ate that so much. We felt comforted, in as much as that is possible. You are truly saints. I can’t even imagine dealing with people dying or in grief day after day. Thank you again. — Carlene Ringer, partner of

George Mayol

To all the great staff thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you did for my mom Elena. You will always be in my heart and never for-gotten.— Priscilla McDonald, daughter

of Elena Opazo

My mom passed at Caring House on Sunday morning. She was treated by staff with the utmost respect and she passed with dignity. I wanted to give Tracy recognition for her compassion-ate bedside manner. She was with my mom when she passed and it gave me great solace to know that she was not alone. Thank you Caring House for taking such good care of my mom. — Sheba Mahmoodian, daugh-

ter of Homa Mahmoodian

My dear friend, Julie Pinckert, was cared for at Caring House in your loving, gentle environment. It was a great comfort to me to spend time with her there in her fi nal days. Her peaceful end was in large measure due to your tender loving care. — Maureen Molloy, friend of

Julie Pinckert

I shall be forever thankful for all the love and care you provided.— Carol Paeper, sister of Diane

Selfridge

Caring House and HospiceResidents and families select a hospice service before the resident comes to Caring House. Seventeen distinct hos-pice services have now served our resi-dents. Hospice teams offer medical care and pain and symptom management, as well as spiritual support, counseling and education. Hospice team members visit our residents and provide vital sup-port to them and their loved ones, in col-laboration with our staff.

Our family will always be grate-ful to Caring House and the op-portunity you gave our family to say goodbye to my Dad. We were able to talk to him, to hold him, to tell him we loved him. We let him know that we will miss him greatly but we will take care of each other as he had always done for his fam-ily and that when he was ready to go, it was ok.

The love and care you showed for both my father and my family was amazing. I hope that many more families will fi nd you so they will experience the same love you showed us. Thank you again and God Bless the Caring House. — Nancy Ralsten, daughter of

Jack Hoffman

Thank you for the loving care you gave my mother and the kindness you showed to our family at a very diffi cult time.— Antoinette Salo Tahir,

daughter of Alice Salo

I love the work that you do. I just wish there could be more places like Caring House. My family and I are forever grateful to you all.— Wendy Montgomery,

daughter of Walter Montgomery

So she could continue to perform for our residents, visitors, and staff, volunteer musician Anne Destabelle (briefl y unmasked) moved her keyboard to the backyard.
