Principal’s Address Dr Deborah Priest
Summary Feedback from the 2016 Parent and Student Surveys
This week we received the raw data from the 2016 AISM Student Survey and in many ways the student ‘voice’
has echoed that of their parents. Please find attached, detailed summary analysis of the Parent Survey data
and preliminary feedback from the Student Survey data. More detailed feedback on the Student Survey data
will be shared in Term 3 when the analysis is completed.
We are pleased to receive affirmation from parents and students about the strategic direction in which we are
heading. The teachers and support staff have been working very hard to meet, and then exceed, your
expectations of providing our students with every opportunity to fulfill their individual potentials. From our
very youngest children to our soontograduate Seniors, our goal is consistent and ongoing. Improvements in
academic outcomes as well as enhanced opportunities to develop lifelong skills in cultural, sporting, service
and extracurricular pursuits are the cornerstones of our strategic planning.

Best wishes to departing members of the AISM community
It is customary in an international school to farewell members of our community at the end of each term.
This term we farewell four teachers and have the opportunity to engage some new teachers who bring
additional skills to our talented academic faculty. As a result of Middle School students moving through
semesterlong elective subjects and as a result of these new teaching appointments, students in the Middle

END OF SEMESTER
One of the wonderful aspects of life in an international school is that we regularly have the pleasure of new
learners and their families joining our community. Next term there will be 28 (and possibly more) new
students joining the Junior School and I am sure we will all make them welcome. Unfortunately however,
there are also just over a dozen students leaving the Junior School, with the vast majority returning to their
home country. To these students we wish you all the very best of luck in your new school and we trust that
you will remember your time at AISM fondly.
I wish all Junior School families a safe and relaxing holiday and look forward to seeing you all for the start of
Term 3 on Wednesday 20 July. Remember to keep your children reading and practising number facts over the
holidays. A little number work and reading each day will make a big difference to the children when they
return. To our Muslim families, Selamat Hari Raya, and to our other families, I wish you all a safe and happy
holidays.
STAGE 1 SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Thank you to all those parents who assisted last Friday with the Stage
1 Swimming Carnival. It was wonderful to see so many of our children
in the water, and this would not have been possible without so many
parents swimming laps to support our students. Thank you also to Mr
Roberts and the Stage 1 teachers for all their work on the day and
congratulations to Freeman for being crowned the winning house on
the day.

comprehensive handover with Ms Holmes, and is very much looking forward to
starting work with the EAL students and working with Mrs Larkworthy, Ms Freeman and Year 5.
YEAR 3 DAY OF HEALTH Mitchell O'Brien, Year 3 Home Room Teacher
Last Wednesday, Year 3 participated in a 'Day of
Health'. Professional members of our community
came in and shared their knowledge with our
learners. Thank you to Lavaniya Panicker, Kylie
Neighbour, Liz Gilbert and Sally Renfrey for giving of
their time to speak to Year 3 about hygiene,
physiotherapy, podiatry and keeping fit.
Ms Bradley’s 10G kept the children on their toes by
putting them through an exercise course and a
dance routine.
Mrs MacFarlane and Nurse Alice treated the
students to an entertaining lesson about healthy
lunch boxes.
The day concluded with Year 3 students visiting the MSS to learn from their older peers at the STEM
Showcase.
Thank you to all of the students for actively engaging in the day and parents and teachers for ensuring the
day’s success.
Bahasa Malaysia and Malaysian Cultural Studies
Consumerism Scrapbook and Poster Competition
During Term 2, the Years 4 and 5 students participated in a
competition organized by FOMCA in collaboration with the
Ministry of Education, Malaysia. FOMCA is a
nongovernment organisation that is voluntary, nonprofit,
nonpolitical and civicoriented. It is the umbrella body of
registered consumer associations in Malaysia. This annual
competition that the children from Year 4 and Year 5 will be
participating in the Consumerism Scrapbook and Poster
Competition. The topic for this annual competition was
‘Environmental Pollution’ or ‘Pencemaran Alam Sekitar’.
Spell it right!
The focus in Year 2 Bahasa this semester was developing
vocabulary and using correct spelling. Students participated
in different spelling activities including our own spelling
games, like ‘The Witch Chair’, where learners were given
clues by the spelling witch on the chair. This is just one of
the many activities used to increase the learners’ vocabulary
and spelling accuracy.
Wau Bulan Making
Wau Bulan or Moon Kite is a famous big kite and one of the traditional
games in Malaysia. This term learners in Year 3 had the opportunity to
make a small model of Wau Bulan. The began by making the skeleton of
Wau Bulan by using bamboo stick and went on to design patterns and
decorations.
Year 3 Excursion Mitchell O'Brien, Year 3 Home Room Teacher
On Thursday 9 June, Year 3 ventured to the National Mosque and were given guided
tours around the grounds. The students were full of inquisitive and thoughtful
questions. The tour guides were very helpful in answering them. We were all
amazed at the beautiful patterns and calligraphy found throughout this amazing
place of Islamic worship.
Year 3 then crossed the road to the Islamic Arts Museum of Malaysia. Here the
students enjoyed making batik prints and experimenting with colour. They also
toured around the museum enjoying and sketching artefacts from yesteryear. The
students were wellbehaved and did AISM proud.
This excursion was to gain a deeper knowledge and appreciation of our Inquiry unit,
'Unity Through Diversity'. It was a fun day celebrating and discussing history, culture
and religion.
Ramadhan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri
Wishing a great and happy Ramadhan and Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri to all AISM staff and students. May
happiness be always with you. Have a great holiday.
Cikgu Adila and Cikgu Fadhly
Middle and Senior School Ivan McLean, Head of Middle and Senior Schools
As we come to the end of a very busy semester, I would like to wish all students and families a welldeserved and relaxing break. The international school setting is always one of a transient nature and regardless it is always difficult to say goodbye to our students, along with the departing staff that Dr Priest mentioned in her article. I would like to wish those families that are leaving our school community the very best in their future endeavours and if you return to KL at any time, we are more than happy to have students visit the School. There will be just as many new staff and students joining us, so be prepared to see many new faces too. This semester has been filled with so many great academic challenges and achievements for our students I hope that they have been able to reach their targets and goals. The demonstration of talent among our student body is inspirational. I have witnessed the success of a vast array of students academically in terms of their individual results and academic competitions; creatively through their exhibitions of photography/artworks, Drama/Music and STEM Showcases; physically through both the individual and team success of so many talented sportspeople (and dancers at the Team Building Day!); and emotionally as students work their way through difficult and trying times as they become young adults. The holidays are times for students to take stock of their wellbeing and enjoy “doing things that children should do”. As one of my friends says at his school, find time for your children to “unplug from the matrix”. Let them get incredibly bored. While it sounds ridiculous, it is the act of unplugging and getting bored that always created the perfect holidays for many of us in our youth. Yes, they will complain. Heavily. However, if we use these opportunities to help our children BE children...creative, constructive, collaborative...their lives will be similarly enriched. Before moving to KL, my family sorted through boxes and boxes of old photos (when we used to go get them printed) and my kids loved the experience. They were fascinated by stories they knew little about and their curiosity was piqued around “old” friends, hair and (most unfortunately) fashion! Enjoy the moments and return to school in Term 3 ready to make more new stories. I look forward to seeing students return (to their Homerooms) on Wednesday 20 July, ready to write a new chapter together.

STEM Showcase Simon Matheson, Head of Department Science and Technology
“The STEM exhibition demonstrated the inventive and creative spirit of the participants. The inventions
were very diverse and I’m sure the students learned valuable scientific principles whilst designing and
constructing their exhibits.”
(Rod McBride, father of Year 9 student Wesley McBride)
“The STEM Showcase was a great way of highlighting how the students are actively engaging with Science
in fun and innovative ways. I was really impressed with the variety of projects and experiments on show,
and just how knowledgeable and enthusiastic the students were in demonstrating their work. I found that
the Eco students were especially passionate about their topic. They should all be very proud!”
(Karen Weir, mother of Year 9 student Eve Weir and Year 7 student Ross Weir)
Congratulations to all students and staff involved in the AISM Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics Showcase that was hosted on Wednesday 15 June. Students from Years 6 to Years 10
presented projects across a vast field of Science and Technology including:
● Experimental investigations into rates of reaction using starch Iodine clock reactions
● Experimental investigations into how heat and sound waves transfer
● Environmental awareness campaigns focused on renewable energies
● Promotions of scientific and technological evidence which contribute to managing the
impact of natural events
● F1 Schools competition, encouraging engineering, management, marketing and innovation
● Robotics and App development through Information and Software Technologies
From 2:20pm to 3:10pm the Junior School visited with students across Years 2 to 5, who made the verandahs
of the A Block abuzz with excitement and education. Many commented on the enthusiasm and quality of
knowledge of the presenting students, which is encouraging for the future of AISM achievements internally
and externally. Special thanks must go to the students who remained behind after school to treat the parents
and visitors to a special showcase of student work which has been developing in the passions of our students
for a long time. When given the opportunity it was evident that AISM is brimming with talented higher order
thinkers and collaborative team members.

World Environment Day Mrs Alison Jafari, Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) and Geographic Teacher
Year 8 celebratedWorld Environment Day by making terrariums
in class! In our small groups we researched the different layers
of the rainforest and determined how we needed to layer the
soil and moss and for the best growth of our plants. Once we
had created our soil mix, we planted two plants and gave the
soil a good water. We then covered the terrarium again, and
have watched the plants grow since we have effectively
created our own mini ecosystem, which is self watering. It has
been interesting to see the amount of condensation that forms
on the sides of the plastic bottles, and we have discussed how
this terrarium is therefore selffeeding and selfsustaining.
The Great Global Letter Race
At the start of the year my classmates and I received a letter from a school in Europe. They were participating
in a competition called the Great Global Letter Race. This is where we write a letter to someone in the world
and write a bit about ourselves. Mrs Naftel decided our class should participate in this amazing race too. So I
choose to write to my old school in New Zealand, Mount Maunganui Primary School, I didn't expect anything
to arrive. After about a month or so me and Yin Jenn received a letter back! My letter was from a girl called
Mairangi Te AhuruQuinn. It was great fun to communicate and learn about other people far away from the
country you are currently in. Also old fashioned letters are a great way to contact others instead of using
email or the Internet. I hope you guys participate in the Great Global Letter Race too. Get writing!!
By Lara GenetParry, Year 6W
The Global Letter Race is a race where Year 6 students around the world get the chance to send letters to
other Year 6 students around the globe. A girl from Switzerland called Maria wrote to our school. I wrote to a
school in Hong Kong called the ‘Australian International School Hong Kong (AISHK)’. I chose Hong Kong
because I wanted to know what it was like living there and how AISHK was like.
About two weeks after I sent the letter, a reply came back. A girl called Ella replied to my letter. At first I was
excited, but at the same time I was a little bit nervous opening my letter, but when I started reading, it
seemed like Ella was a nice girl.
I would definitely recommend all Year 6 students to participate in the GLR (Global Letter Race), it is a fun way
of learning to write letters as well as learning about people from all over the world.

Asia-Pacific Forum for Science Talented - Taiwan: AISM Students to Represent Malaysia Alison Brand, Science Teacher
The Asia-Pacific Forum for Science talented students is being held from 19 to 24 July in Taipei, Taiwan. This forum will be held at the National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei. Students from all over the Asia Pacific have been chosen to participate in this event. The students were nominated by their Science teachers for their ongoing excellent academic results and their potential to contribute to science in the future. The students were then interviewed by a panel of academics representing Malaysian Universities and the National Association for the Gifted Malaysia (NAGCM). It was with great pride that five of the six seats in the Malaysian team were selected from our AISM students. This is a great honour and achievement for the school and is indicative of the confidence and ability of our students to perform both academically and in a global context. The interview panel expressed how incredibly impressed they were with our students throughout the interview process and these students are to be congratulated on being selected to represent AISM and Malaysia in this global event. The students attending are Ashley Boudeville (8W), Alexander Kam (8W), Airyl Shazli (9G), Qi Lin Kong (9M), and Samuel Wong (10M). Mrs Alison Brand will be accompanying them. They will be participating in an exciting range of forums, hands-on projects, presentations and cultural events. We wish these students a safe and memorable experience!
HSC 2017- Parents of Current Year 11 students Alex Stavenuiter, Learning Enrichment Teacher
The Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) has a program to help students with practical support in their Higher School Certificate (HSC) examinations. This practical support, known as provisions, assists students to read examination questions and to write their answers. Provisions may include rest rest breaks, extended writing or reading time or small or individual supervised rooms. The use of any provision is not written on the student’s results. Students may need provisions for: ● a permanent condition, such as diabetes or reading difficulty ● a temporary condition, such as a broken arm, or ● an intermittent condition, such as back pain when sitting for long periods To apply for provisions, the school submits an online application to BOSTES. This application tells BOSTES which provisions the student is requesting and includes recent evidence. Evidence may include medical reports, reading results, spelling results, writing samples and teacher comments.
If you think that you or your child may require support in completing the HSC examinations for 2017, please discuss the matter with Ms Alex. Please contact her through email [email protected] by Friday 29 July so we can begin collating the required documents.

Netball
On Sunday 12 June, the Under 11s Netball Girls travelled to Alice Smith to take part in a Netball Tournament.
It was an early start and lots of the girls had competed in an invitational swimming carnival the day before.
The girls played really well as a team and were extremely competitive. AISM came sixth overall. A special
thank you must go to teacher Louise Tupai and parent Michelle Duncan for their coaching skills and
dedication to the team.
Player of the day: Manami For fitness and reliability for all 5 games.
Most Improved: Eelea Finding space and coming forward for the ball.
Swimming Carnival
Last Friday, 17 June, Foundation to Year 2 held their
annual Swimming Carnival at the AISM Pool. The morning
was full of excitement and not even the drizzly morning
rain could deter students from giving it their all.
Four bellowing house cheers opened up the carnival and
moments later the students were in the water swimming
in their first event. Each student swam freestyle,
backstroke and breaststroke and at the end of the morning
it was Freeman who took out first place with 60 points.
Thorpe came in second place with 33 points, while third
place was closely contested by Rafter and Sauvage, Rafter
just edging out Sauvage in the end with 27 points to 24 points.
It was a joyous occasion for the AISM community and a great way to end a busy term of swimming. A special
thank you must go out to all of the teaching staff, parent helpers, library ladies and the Parents’ Association
for ensuring that the morning was a swimming success.
I would also like to thank all of the parents who have assisted me with the delivery of the Foundation to Year
2 Swimming Program this term. I could not have done it without your support. Have a wonderful break and I
look forward to another action packed term of Junior School Sport in three weeks’ time.
Netball Coach Alison Jafari
We had two very excited teams playing netball on
Thursday last week! The girls received their personalised
netball dresses during the week, and this was the first
opportunity for them to wear the green and gold of
AISM! Even during warmup, many people commented
on how great the girls looked in their new uniforms.
We had two full games against Epsom College, who
travelled to AISM to play us.
The Under 13 team had an outstanding first quarter and
lead 41 going into the first break. Epsom gained some
momentum, and by the end of the third quarter the score was all tied up 55. The final quarter was very
tense and momentum swayed back and forth throughout the 7 minute quarter. AISM ended up winning the
game 75, making two crucial scores in the dying minute. The whole team played really well together, and it
is evident that our training sessions are making them a good little unit.
The Under 16 team started strongly against an experienced Epsom team. The first quarter saw our girls race
out to an early lead of 52. They built on that lead over each quarter and came home comprehensive
winners, with the final score being 136. There was some outstanding play from the whole team, with the
defensive combination of Regina Kewo (playing out of position) and Sophia Koumouris (recent switch to
defending) gaining a significant number of tips and intercepts. The centre court was covered expertly by Ellis
Idris, Irish Breen, Ashley Boudeville and Erja MohdSuhaimy and they combined well to provide an excellent
link between the defensive end and the attacking end. Our shooters for the game were Sara Stalebring and
Sandhaya Sritharan who combined well for the first time, and made some great shots.
AISM U18 Boys Soccer Friendly Match
AISM U18 Soccer Boys had a match with Tanarata International School onWednesday 15 June 2016 at their
school in Kajang. Players who played were Ade Wirasubrata, Daniel Bogers, Edly Elias, Keith Leong, Praveen
Revi Chandran, Adin Hogarth, Nick How, Dylan McKibbin, Samuel Wong, Kaveen Parthiban, Alex Khoo,
Muhammad Mukhtar and Aiman Sazali. Both teams showed ability to attack with speed and skills. An
enthralling match resulted to a 43 victory to Tanarata. AISM goals were scored by Ade and 2 goals from
Dylan. Despite losing the match AISM showed very good sportsmanship during the game and some excellent
performance from Edly, Nick and Kaveen. Congratulations to all players and thanks to supporters who come
and watched a game.
Performing Arts
Katherine Kitching, Drama Teacher
Senior Performance Showcase
Senior Drama and Music students at AISM were given the opportunity to showcase their talents to an
audience of peers, parents and teachers in the Theatre last Thursday evening. Performing to a live audience
allows Performing Arts students to complete the cycle of Art Making and is an incredibly important part of the
creative process. It teaches students skills not only in performance, but in preparing and running a live show
as well.
The night was admirably hosted by the Arts Captains,
Whey Qi and Sammy, who entertained and informed the
audience about each performance. The Music students
started the night with a touching rendition of Paramore’s
‘The Only Exception’ by the Year 9 Band, followed by the
Year 9/10 Drama class performing a selfdevised piece
entitled ‘Ai Yi Shu’ based on their studies of Theatres of
Asia. This was followed by Bon Jovi’s ‘It’s My Life’ by Year
9 Music, a powerful Individual Performance called
‘Narcissus’ by HSC Drama student Adam Khalid, and the
Year 10 Band bringing the house down with Muse’s
‘Uprising’.
The Preliminary Drama students then took to the stage with their selfdevised piece ‘Prism’ based on the
sociopolitical dramatic works of Brecht, Boal and Fo. The evening was rounded off by two HSC
‘worksinprogress’; Wei Wen Tan playing Mozart’s ‘Rondo Alla Turca’ on the Grand Piano, and the HSC
Drama ensemble’s hilarious selfdevised comedy ‘The Black Case’.
After the performance, HSC Drama students were given the valuable opportunity to receive feedback on their
piece for their upcoming exams. They would like to sincerely thank all those who gave them constructive
comments about their performances they have a lot of hard work ahead of them!
A huge thank you to all those who worked to get the evening ready, including the brilliant Arts Assistant Mr
Ervin, and the tireless efforts of the Facilities Department. Of course, I would also like to congratulate and
thank the Music teachers Ms Breger and Mr Smith on working to make their students ‘show ready’. Finally, a
big thank you to the students themselves who did the ‘real work’ proving all the blood, sweat and tears
behind the scenes to be more than worth it. You should all be incredibly proud of yourselves.
We are such stuff as dreams are made on.

Teaspoons of Change Susan Skinner, Science Teacher, Year 6 Team Leader
On Friday 10 June, most of our students from Year 1 through
to Year 8 were introduced to the idea of “Teaspoons of
Change” and how the small actions of one person, you or me,
multiplied by lots of people, can equal big change.
We learned how we could become global citizens to help to make the world a better place.
Our guest speaker was Mr d’Arcy Lunn, an Australian
teacher who spends his life travelling the world and
raising awareness of the United Nations Global Goals.
For the past 15 years, he has travelled to 80 countries,
given 500+ presentations to more than 50,000 students
around the world. He rode a bike 1000 miles across
Canada and the United States, for 5 weeks, living on
1.50AUD per day, to raise awareness about poverty.
D’Arcy has also helped developed a range of programs in
schools to help address global issues. Polio Points is an
example: Students plan and do a good deed for the planet, for which they earn points. The school or an
outside donor agrees to donate a certain amount for every point. The money goes towards buying polio
vaccines for young children and the global eradication of polio.
D’Arcy entertained and inspired many students to think about how they look at the world and the teaspoons
of change they can make. We will be offering ‘Teaspoons of Change’ as a CCA in Semester 2, and this will be
an opportunity for students to work on a new AISM project together.
Here are some comments from our students ...
“The whole talk made me think about the world’s problems, it taught me that the world can benefit from
even the smallest good actions. I learned that there are many ways to help the world, such as going to the
Unicef Tap Project to donate to the needy. I believe everybody present had been influenced by the talk”.
Ennis, 7W
It was a really good experience and lesson, teaching us the significance of the ecosystem as well as how
the smallest actions, can make a massive impact. Mr d’Arcy Lunn definitely opened everyone's mind, to
be more are of the environment and to take action to make the world a better, fairer society.
