The first broadcast was from KKEA in Pittsburgh, PA. Radio in the early days painted a picture in your mind. They weren’t trained in the beginning on how to do this and sometimes they were very difficult to understand when caught up in the moment, especially when describing a catastrophic event. He played us a news report of the Hindenburg crashing. The first soap operas were on the radio such as the Romance of Helen Trent. Some of the most popular shows were Amos & Andy, Jack Benny Show, The Lone Ranger, and The Shadow to name a few. World events were broadcast over the radio. The Battle of Britian by Winston Churchill, Pearl Harbor by Franklin D Roosevelt, Hitler. Walter Cronkite was one of Gaylon’s hero’s of radio and was so thrilled when he got to meet him when he won a radio award. “The Eagle has landed” and “one small step etc” are events broadcasted around the world on radio and TV by then. When radio first started they needed to find ways to make money from it. That started the radio commercials. We had the treat of hearing short excerpts from many great event, shows and funny commercials.
