STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

Moreau Catholic High School enters into a partnership with the family and provides opportunities and means by which students are guided to higher levels of spiritual, social and academic development. We believe this partnership is given meaning through the legacy and values established by Blessed Basil Moreau, founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross. This partnership is enhanced by the spirit, vision, and collaboration shared among the entire school community and the Diocese of Oakland.

As a community of faith, we believe a Holy Cross education is centered in Christian values and adheres to high standards and expectations for individual achievement and social responsibility. We are guided by Jesus Christ to give witness to our faith through lived experiences—prayer, liturgical celebrations, retreats, and community service. These experiences nurture dignity and respect for religious and cultural diversity.

A Moreau Catholic High School education facilitates the formation of qualities such as integrity, justice, stewardship, love, compassion, and hope. We educate students to become people of values as well as scholars. By cultivating heart and mind, our students become responsible citizens and a positive force in the transformation of our global community.

Through our college-preparatory curriculum, our students become life-long learners and effective communicators. Our commitment to outstanding achievement ensures that our students become knowledgeable and skillful in areas of moral and ethical decision-making, critical thinking, accountability, technology and adaptability. Our cocurricular programs enhance the academic and spiritual dimensions of our school by providing formative activities that foster community, leadership, creativity, and sportsmanship. These learning experiences are achieved in a safe, caring educational environment facilitated by a professional and dedicated faculty and staff.

The fulfillment of our mission as Holy Cross educators is facilitated through the partnership between the family and school community. The knowledge, skills, and values taught to and embraced by our students help them shape their future and the world.

A UNIQUE RELATIONSHIP

The mission of our school does

not exist independently of the

educational mission of the

Diocese of Oakland.

The Most Reverend Salvatore Joseph Cordileone, Bishop of Oakland, with President Terry Lee and Principal Lauren Lek ‘97 at the 2009 Parish Leadership Recognition Dinner.

CATHOLIC IDENTITY

AND HOLY CROSS MISSION

The mission of our school does not exist independent of the educational mission of the Diocese of Oakland. Blessed Basil Moreau taught that ministries of Holy Cross should be carried out based on the needs of Bishops and only then the needs of the Congregation. Our identity is rooted in Gospel values and the charisms of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Our school’s bylaws reflect the unique relationship between the school and the Diocese.

A strong and vibrant Catholic Identity and Holy Cross Mission is integral to the life of the school, and the formation and transformation of the whole student.

• The school will complete our Catholic Identity and Holy Cross Mission Assessment, and implement the recommendations.

• The school will implement the new standards of the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA) into the WASC/ co-accreditation process.

In February 2010, the Holy Cross Mission Assessment Team interviewed students, faculty and administration and offered recommendations. From the top left are: Br. Donald Blauvelt, CSC; Angel Cedillo; Terry McGaha. Br. Michael Winslow, CSC; Susan Marquess; Theresa BillingsDinner

KEY AREAS

The school is committed to teaching the basic beliefs of Catholicism and engages the Spirit through prayer, liturgical celebrations and opportunities for reflection during retreats.

Moreau Catholic High School will allocate the necessary resources to support all curricular and cocurricular programs.

They credited their success to a Moreau Catholic education and the generosity of donors.2009 Parish Leadership Recognition Dinner

ACADEMICSWe affirm the values of a college preparatory education through a curriculum which affords maximum opportunities and preparation for living in a global community, possession of life-long learning skills, and success in the pursuit of a higher education. To this extent, no one teacher or department provides resources and opportunities for student learning and achievement in isolation from other colleagues, departments, or programs. We contend that careful planning and creative curriculum design are without meaning unless coordinated and implemented with consistency across the curriculum.

The school’s academic program supports students’ development in faith, character and community service.

• The school’s curriculum will address the ethical use of information and tools.

• The school’s curriculum will include prayer and spiritual learning opportunities across all subject areas.

• The school will incorporate service learning and the inclusion of the Catholic Social Teaching themes throughout the curriculum.

Moreau Catholic prepares its students for future careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) by offering interdisciplinary courses that allow students opportunities to apply their knowledge by solving problems and creating solutions.

TECHNOLOGYWe affirm the belief that technology is an integral part of our students’ lives and futures. Our responsibility to our students includes preparing them for a world in which technology is powerful, embedded and ubiquitous. That responsibility requires the access to training for students, teachers and staff, a curriculum infused with ethical and innovative use of technology, and access to professional technology tools.

Technology is a ubiquitous part of the learning environment. • The school will develop and begin implementing the five year

technology plan. • The school will identify and/or develop tools to measure the
