Data As A Service is a Managed Service offering fromBloomberg PolarLake to enable the on-boarding of VendorData Feeds, to the integration of those feeds to consumingapplications and manage changes to Vendor Feed interfaces ina controlled fashion. Bloomberg PolarLake’s Data Operationsteam monitors all customers’ configurations ensuring timelydelivery of their customized outputs.

DAAS is a Managed Service alternative to in-house bespokefeed adaptor maintenance and ongoing efforts to processVendor Data. It can also be used to assist with the integrationof Vendor Data to proprietary or third party applications –especially in cases where standard third party adaptors are notcompatible with all the Vendor Data Feeds/Products requiredand when embellished with the users’ own proprietary data.

Vendor Data On-boarding and Integration ChallengesTypical challenges faced by firms consuming vendor data,such as Bloomberg Reference Data, include:

• The scheduling and downloading of large files throughout the day and managing requests as they happen

• Extraction of relevant Securities of Interest and Delta Management across multiple files

• File integrity and basic data validations such as file valid header/footer formats, record count verification and field type validation

• Transformation of data into multiple application-specific formats

FASTER TIME TO MARKET WHEN CONSUMING BLOOMBERG REFERENCE DATABloomberg Reference Data customers can rely on Bloomberg PolarLake to design, test and implement Bloomberg Reference Dataon-boarding and processing solutions in a Managed Service environment.

Bloomberg Reference Data InterfaceThe Bloomberg PolarLake Implementation Team configures eachcustomer’s DAAS Solution to retrieve data from BloombergReference Data Products per each client’s unique requirements.For Per Security users, this includes the creation of Per Securityrequest files in the required syntax and the request/retrievalprocess for the request and output files (BVAL and BVAL OTCare also supported). For Back Office users, this includes thedownloading of the Back Office files and aggregation of datacontent across different file types (for example, data from bothpricing files and descriptive files). For customers using acombination of Per Security and Back Office Products,Bloomberg PolarLake will manage the acquisition of data acrossthose products, using each product as required.

Cross-Referencing, Mapping, Translation RulesThe Bloomberg PolarLake Implementation Team will createthe business logic required to link data from Per Security files,Back Office files and customer supplied files (these filesinclude information such as security identifiers, securityclassifications, prices, etc). In addition Bloomberg PolarLakemanages business requirements and creates transformationrules for mapping and translating Bloomberg fields and valuesinto the fields and data output required.

TestingThe Bloomberg PolarLake Implementation Team works witheach customer to ensure the DAAS output files are createdcorrectly and on time. During this testing phase, theBloomberg PolarLake Implementation Team will managecustomer feedback and update the DAAS configuration toincorporate changes to the Bloomberg Reference DataInterface or Cross-Referencing, Mapping and TranslationRules.

BenefitsCustomers can rely on Bloomberg PolarLake for businessanalysis (understanding how to acquire data from BloombergReference Data products, developing cross-reference, mapping,translation rules, managing testing) and technical development(the design of the actual reference data interface and rulesengine) when consuming Bloomberg Reference Data. As aresult, DAAS customers benefit from a faster time to marketwhen building Bloomberg Reference Data on-boarding andprocessing solutions.

INCREASE OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY, DATA QUALITY AND SUPPLY CHAINTRANSPARENCY Customers can rely on Bloomberg PolarLake to proactively monitor and troubleshoot daily production operations in the processingof Bloomberg Reference Data through its industry leading Data Operations Managed Service capability.

Supply-Chain Monitoring and Data QualityBloomberg PolarLake monitors each DAAS customer’s dailyoutput process supply chain, ensuring that all input files arereceived in a timely manner (ie Back Office files and customer-supplied files are received as expected), the cross-referencing/mapping/translation rules are applied and the output file iscreated and delivered on time. If any piece of the supply chainbreaks, the DAAS technology allows the Bloomberg PolarLakesupport team to pinpoint where the break occurred and theywill follow-up directly with the appropriate party (BloombergReference Data or the customer). Bloomberg PolarLake DataOperators also monitor common data quality issues acrosssecurities and escalate issues with the Bloomberg ReferenceData Team. Data Quality observations are produced for clientsbased on the source metrics (availability and timeliness) andrecord level metrics (record number checks, file date, filestructure, file syntax). Once the Data Vendor producesreplacement Data for such problems Bloomberg PolarLakewill use this Data to fulfil the DAAS orders. DAAS providesthe client with reporting on source and record data qualityobservations on a daily basis.

BenefitsDAAS customers will no longer need to develop their ownsystem of alert notifications that indicate problems in theirBloomberg Reference Data download and transformationprocess. In addition, customers will not have to spend time andresources troubleshooting Bloomberg Reference Data downloador transformation failures. Also Bloomberg PolarLake’s DataQuality observations and alerting provides an understanding ofcommon source level and record level data quality metricsand the advice of domain experts as how to remediate themfor critical large scale exceptions.

Back Office SubscriptionBack Office subscriptions provide customers with the timelydelivery of different types of reference data (descriptive, pricing,corporate actions). To accomplish timely delivery, the data issegmented into many different files: by data type (descriptive,pricing, corporate action) and by region (Asia, Europe, NorthAmerica, Latin America). As an example, the most popularBloomberg Reference Data subscription, Global Equities,delivers 30 unique files per day at various times.

Bloomberg PolarLake manages the timely download of BackOffice files for DAAS customers within the Bloomberg PolarLakedata center (customers maintain their Back Office licensingagreements directly with Bloomberg). Content required for acustomer’s Daas output file is sourced from the appropriateBack Office files – across geographies and/or file type(ie descriptive, pricing).

REDUCED BLOOMBERG DATA BACK OFFICE FILE PROCESSING ANDSTORAGE COSTSIn many cases Bloomberg Reference Data Back Office users spend a lot of processing effort and storage capacity when loadinglarge files and extracting the required securities of interest from multiple files.

BenefitsDAAS customers will be able to take advantage of all theBack Office features, such as timely delivery, broad coverageand comprehensive content without incurring the cost andmaintenance of managing their own database storagesolution.

Supply Chain TechnologyDAAS uses Bloomberg PolarLake’s core technology thatenables the flexible definition and execution of powerful datasupply chains from source to target. This technology is thebasis for high performance and flexibility in DAAS solutions.

BenefitsBloomberg Back Office files, in some cases, containing over amillion records, will be processed quickly and efficiently.In addition, the process of collating all securities from allsources (Reference Data files and customer-supplied files)and applying the data mappings and transformations to thoserecords is performed using Bloomberg PolarLake’s technology.As a result, DAAS customers benefit from faster Bloombergdata acquisition, transformation and distribution allowing themto complete dependent tasks quicker and deliver data to theirconsumers earlier.

Bloomberg Reference Data NotificationsWeekly Reference Data notifications contain informationabout product changes such as:

• Field Logic Changes - for example, changing the “callable flag” for make whole bonds from Y to N

• Field Meta-Data Changes – for example, change the decimalprecision

• Scheduled Bulk Data Updates – for example, populating theexchange symbol field for a certain market

• Back Office field additions – for example, adding fields to a certain Back Office field layout

These product changes can have significant impact tocustomer’s Bloomberg Reference Data interface, their mapping,translation rules and ultimately their downstream applications.

REDUCED INTERNAL BLOOMBERG REFERENCE DATA SUPPORT RESOURCESAll Bloomberg Reference Data product changes, such as field changes, field value logic changes and format changes etc. areproactively managed by Bloomberg PolarLake.

DAAS SupportBloomberg PolarLake Support will monitor these ReferenceData notices and ensure that the DAAS Reference Datainterface supports upcoming changes affecting the loadingand storing of files. In addition, they will assess the impact ofthese changes on each customers DAAS solution and ifnecessary coordinate customer discussions and recommenda plan of action.

BenefitsDAAS customers do not have to spend time and resourcesanalyzing Bloomberg Reference Data notifications. As a result,they can allocate their resources to their mission critical taskswhile being assured that they will be proactively notified aboutthe impact of these changes to their DAAS solution andguided through any changes that may need to be applied.

Change ManagementThe Bloomberg PolarLake Support Team is there to makechanges to customers DAAS solutions as required, such asadding additional DAAS output files (along with their sourcingand transformation rules), adjusting DAAS output schedulesand changes to output formats (different headers/footers, etc).These changes can also be fully tested in a duplicate, yetseparate DAAS testing or UAT environment. The BloombergPolarLake Support Team will manage the entire testingprocess through to production release.

INCREASED EFFICIENCY FOR BLOOMBERG REFERENCE DATA DEVELOPMENTRESOURCESCustomers can rely on Bloomberg PolarLake to add/remove fields, update mapping/translation rules and adjust timing of theirdata deliveries.
