APPLICATION
Furnas Class 16 definitepurpose magnetic startersare designed for the controlof air conditioning, heatingand refrigeration equipment. They provide dependable, full voltage control for com-pressors, grain driers, con-veyors and custom pumpmotors. These controls areavailable in 13 sizes from25-650 FLA at 240V, 480Vand 600V.
CONSTRUCTION
Class 16 definite purposemagnetic starters incorpo-rate the following construc-tion features.
Common Mounting- 25A-60A definite purpose startersshare common mountingconfigurations and dimen-sions.
Straight Thru Wiring-Line terminals are located atthe top, load terminals at thebottom. This constructioneliminates looping wiresaround the control andreduces wiring costs.
Magnet- Laminated layersof silicon steel are riveted toform a durable magnet. Thehorizontal type armaturesoperate with a snap actionand a short stroke thatreduce contact bounce andmechanical wear. A shadingcoil insures positive sealingof the armature. An air gapin the central leg of the
magnet prevents residualmagnetism from interferingwith normal contact dropout.
Molded Arc Box (ContactBlock)- Molded fromrugged thermosetting mate-rials, Class 16 arc boxesresist arc tracking and thestresses of heat and severeimpact. Sizes 25-90A use atwo piece enclosed arc box.
Silver Cadmium OxideContacts- Furnasdefinite purpose startersare equipped with silvercadmium oxide contacts, amaterial having high conduc-tivity and superior resistanceto welding and arc erosion. These contacts are the dou-ble break type with largesurface areas to minimizeelectrical resistance andattendant heat.
Dependable ThermalOverload Relays- Furnasoverload relays aredesigned to protect motorsfrom excessive current andresultant damage.Mechanical overloading, sin-gle phasing, stalled rotorand low voltage are some ofthe causes of excessive cur-rent. Proper selection ofheater elements for theoverload relay will prolongmotor life and help preventnuisance trips. Furnas over-load relays and heater ele-ments are de-signed to par-allel the thermal characteris-tics of typical electric motors. They trip out

on sustained overload butnot on the high starting cur-rents of normal operation.
Bimetal overload relays areavailable in temperaturecompensated and noncom-pensated units. A tempera-ture compensated unit andselected heater elementsprevent nuisance trippingcaused by locating the con-troller in an ambient temp-erature different than that ofthe motor. Both temperaturecompensated and noncom-pensated units are equippedwith normally closed controlcircuit contacts and acceptstandard or quick trip heaterelements. A manual-auto-matic selector offers choiceof reset mode.
Overload relays featureadjustable trip currentpoints which can be fieldset within ±15% of the ratedtrip current.
Single unit overload relaysare designed with adjustabletrip especially for use onsingle phase starters.
Tri-element block overloadrelays for 3 phase featurethree overloads in a com-mon housing. The bimetalstrips are independently
calibrated and any one ofthe three strips may senseheat generated by excessivecurrent flow in the power cir-cuit. Bimetal strips deflectwhen an overload occurs, causing a snap action mech-anism to operate and breaka normally closed circuit. This overload may be manu-ally tripped to open the con-tacts.
ACCESSORIES& MODIFICATIONS
Accessories are available, either factory installed or infield kit form, to makeFurnas definite purposestarters suitable for an evengreater variety of applica-tions.
Coils- Furnas supplies25A -60A starters as stan-dard with an enclosed coil. This design improves corro-sion resistance and mini-mizes the possibility of fail-ure by contamination. Theenclosed coil eliminates theneed for molded coils in hightemperatures or humid appli-cations. Coils on 75A - 650Astarters are encapsulated ina moisture proof epoxy.
Dual Voltage/DualFrequency Coils- Dualvoltage tape wound coilsare available in place ofstandard single voltage coilson 75A and 90A starters atan additional cost. Thesecoils operate on either 50or 60 Hz and are rated120/240Vor240/480V.The dual voltage coils maybe converted from lower tohigher or higher to lowervoltage connections bysimply changing the coiljumpers.
Auxiliary ElectricalInterlock- Furnas suppliesone or two interlocks as afactory modification or forfield installation. Availablewith either normally open ornormally closed contacts.
Enclosure- Class 16magnetic starters can besupplied in a NEMAtype 1general purpose enclosure. This enclosure protects per-sonnel from accidental con-tact with electrical appara-tus. It meets the needs ofindoor applications in a nor-mal atmosphere free ofexcessive moisture, dustand explosive materials.
