  • How to apply the updates to your chartsAll NMs should be recorded against the appropriate chart number in NPl33A.Thereafter al l chartsin current use and those required for any forthcoming passage should be updated immediately; othercharts held on board should then be updated as t ime al lows.

Where more than one copy of a chart is held, ei ther each copy should be recorded separately inNPi33A or a penci l notat ion should be made against the chart number indicat ing how many copiesare held. l t is important that al l copies are maintained consistent ly so as to avoid the possibi l i ty of acopy that has not been updated being usec.

The pr inciples, pract ices and convent ions of chart updat ing are i l lustrated by the examples inChapter 5. Though reference is made to the tracing in the examples given, always refer to theAdmiral ty Not ice to Mariners text which is the pr imary source. By reading the NM whi lst looking atthe chart in quest ion you wi l l avoid the r isk of delet ing information which otherwise could have beenused to complement the new information being inserted.

Violet ink should be used for applying al l updates including those charts pr inted with mult iple coloursincluding. for example, coloured l ight sector bands and l ight f lare symbols. Attempting to repl icatethe colour of the pr inted chart in applying updates is not recommended.

I t should be noted that a tracing is only a guide to i l lustrate the update and to pin-point a posit ion.Special symbols are used on the tracing to indicate insert ions and delet ions; these should NOT becopied fai thful ly onto the chart . The fol lowing examples wi l l point out mistakes which can be madeif the information you are insert ing on the chart is copied from a tracing. l f t racings are used, theseshould be stored by chart number so that in the event of a change of passage plan any charts thatare required but have not been updated can quickly be brought up-to-date. Tracings should alwaysbe f i led by chart number. That way al l the relevant information for any part icular chart is kept togetherand, i f that chart is cancel led or replaced by a New Edit ion or a New Chart, al l the old tracingsrelating to that chart can be destroyed.

There is not an example of an NM Block. These should be al igned accurately and stuck onto theaffected charts. l t is importanl to remember to completely remove the enclosing black l ine around thel imits of the area of a block before st icking i t onto the chart ; there is normal ly at least Smm inside thel ine with no new or deleted information on i t . Care should be taken that new block information doesnot obscure parts of previously inserted updates ( for example, where a sounding has been insertedunder the new block but arrowed-in to a posit ion outside i t )

The fol lowing procedure wi l l help you avoid making mistakes:. Using the information in the NM ( in conjunct ion with the tracing, i f you have i t ) , apply the

uodate to the chart .. Check what you have done.. When you are satisfied that you have correctly followed the instructions of the NM (and

only then) wri te the NM number in the bottom left hand corner of the chart as a recordof the completed update. l t is dangerous to insert the NM number in the bottom left handcorner of the chart before you have updated the chart. The year date for the current yearof NMs should be underl ined so that i t is not confused with an NM number

. When.you have completed al l the steps above, cross through the NM number adjacent tothe chart in your NP133A or simi lar record.

Further advice can be obtained from the DVD "How to Update Admiral ty Standard Naut ical Charts"or by asking your Admiral ty Chart Agent.Any charts held on board that are not, and wi l l not, be maintained up-to-date should clear ly bemarked "NOT TO BE USED FOR NAVIGATION".
