This is because, on the one hand, transforming recycled fibre takes less energy than wood and, on the other, we have a group of specialists among our ranks who have spent the past 20 years working on reducing the energy consumption of our plants. These strategic decisions are reflected in real savings: at the end of 2015, the average consumption of Cascades plants was 9.9 gigajoules 1 per metric tonne of saleable products, while the Canadian industry average is 25.76 GJ/mt 2 . 1 Ratio of energy used (includes the gigajoules that are generated internally from black liquor at one of our plants). Differs slightly from the ratio of energy purchased (9.67 GJ/mt). 2 Forest Products Association of Canada, 2013 GREENHOUSE GAS In recent years, Cascades has converted its steam boilers from heavy oil to natural gas systems. In addition to improved energy efficiency, these changes have also reduced emissions of particulates, sulphur compounds and greenhouse gases. Combined with business decisions, these initiatives have enabled us to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 51% between 1990 and 2015. WATER In the paper industry, water is essential for processing and transforming fibres and other raw materials. It is also used in a slew of related activities such as washing, cooling and the production of steam energy. Once again, the nature of Cascades’ activities constitutes an indisputable competitive advantage, as producing paper from recycled fibre requires much less water than processes involving the transformation of wood into wood fibre. At the end of 2015, Cascades plants’ average water consumption was 9.9 cubic metres per metric tonne of saleable products, while the Canadian industry average is 65 m 3 /mt 1 . 1 Forest Products Association of Canada, 2013 PARTNERS PROSPERITY PLANET 2015 SCORE 2010 SCORE 11.12 2015 SCORE 2010 SCORE 1990 SCORE 208 425 207 192 2015 SCORE 2010 SCORE 12.6 2010 SCORE - 2010 SCORE 3.8% 2012 SCORE 55% 2010 SCORE 4.9 10,000 hours 2015-2020 IMPROVEMENT 2020 64% 2020 TARGET -7% +5% 2015-2020 REDUCTION 9.67 9.00 2015-2020 REDUCTION 9.9 76% 2015-2020 IMPROVEMENT TARGET 2020 TARGET 2020 +40% 2015 SCORE 43% 2015-2020 IMPROVEMENT +57% 2015 SCORE 12.7% 2010 SCORE - TARGET 2020 2015-2020 IMPROVEMENT +43% 2015 SCORE 5.6% TARGET 2018 2015-2018 IMPROVEMENT +16% 2015 SCORE 56% TARGET 2020 * 2015-2020 REDUCTION -38% 2015 SCORE 2.6 2015 SCORE 2010 SCORE 80% 8.9 60% 20% 8% 1.6 65% Reduce the amount of energy we buy to make our products Gigajoules of energy purchased / Metric tonne of saleable products GOAL INDICATOR ENERGY Increase the beneficial use of residuals Kilograms of residuals recovered / Kilograms of residuals generated INDICATOR RESIDUAL MATERIALS Obtain supplies from responsible suppliers Purchases from suppliers whose practices were evaluated and considered responsible by a third party / Total purchases * * purchases negotiated by Cascades' Corporate Procurement Department GOAL INDICATOR SUSTAINABLE PROCUREMENT Optimize the return on capital employed Return on capital employed (ROCE) * * after-tax amount of the last twelve months (LTM) operating income excluding specific items / average LTM capital employed GOAL INDICATOR FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE Increase the level of employee commitment Engagement rate from the Aon Hewitt employee opinion survey * * survey conducted every three years; the next one will be in 2018 GOAL INDICATOR EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT TARGET 2015-2020 REDUCTION 2020 TARGET GOAL TARGET -7% -10% 2020 2020 TARGET Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by favouring the use of renewable energy over fossil fuels Kilograms of CO 2 equivalent / Metric tonne of saleable products GOAL INDICATOR GREENHOUSE GAS Reduce the amount of waste water Cubic metres of waste water / Metric tonne of saleable products INDICATOR WATER GOAL Develop and market new products that are innovative and eco-responsible Sales from new products * / Total sales * A product is considered new for a five-year period.
