A video that highlightedthe Hall of Famer’s 22-yearmajor league career wasshown on the scoreboardbefore the opener of a three-game series against the Col-orado Rockies. The first
20,000 fans to arrive also re-ceived a replica statue of theone that stands outside thewaterfront ballpark in WillieMays Plaza.
Mays told the crowd itwas a “wonderful, wonderfulfeeling” to have so manypeople still cheer for himafter all these years.
help the Vikings build new momentum atthe Capitol, where state lawmakers haveintroduced a bill proposing a three-waycost split between the state, the localpartner and the team on a covered sta-dium estimated to cost up to $900 million.
The proposed state share of $300 mil-lion would be funded with a 10 percentstate sales tax on sports memorabilia, along with a sales tax on luxury seats atthe new stadium and on digital videorecorders, as well as proceeds from sta-dium naming rights and a football-themedstate lottery game.
Under the proposal, the Vikings wouldbe responsible for cost overruns. Daytonand many lawmakers have said they wantto see the team pay more than a third, with the governor suggesting again Fridaythat the team should pay half the totalcost.
Dayton has called the Vikings a stateasset and said building a stadium wouldmean construction jobs for Minnesotans.Team officials have been trying for yearsto get state assistance to build a new sta-dium, saying the Metrodome is no longersufficiently profitable, and team support-ers have suggested failure to providesuch help could ultimately result in thefranchise deserting Minnesota.
If a deal with a local governmentemerges in the next few days, the teamand its Capitol backers would have abouttwo weeks before the May 23 adjourn-ment date for the legislative session. They’ll have to compete for the time andattention of lawmakers who are stillreaching for a deal with Dayton to erase aprojected $5 billion budget deficit. BothHouse Speaker Kurt Zellers and SenateMajority Leader Amy Koch said again Fri-day that the state budget is the first prior-ity.
Dayton said he still thinks it can bedone.
“I’ve seen how deals come togetherand I’ve seen how the time pressure atthe end of the session concentrates deci-sion-making, forces decision-making,“Dayton said.

P&D Leader Board: Nicer Weather Leads To Faster Times As Post-Season Meets Loom
sity of South Dakota won five events, while oneformer area athlete won an individual title forSouth Dakota State.
USD freshman Cody Snyder, a former AndesCentral standout, won the college men’s discuswith a mark of 162-feet-3.
It was the second best mark of the seasonfor Snyder, who said he was gunning for some-thing further.
“Honestly, I was really shooting for 170, be-cause that would get me closer to (NCAA) re-gionals,” he said. “I’m not quite there, but I feellike I could get there at conference.”
Because the Coyotes travel to the GreatWest Conference Outdoor Championshipsearly next week, USD had fewer athletes com-peting in multiple events. Instead, certain ath-letes were either looking to better theirqualifying times or make the conference squad.
“This was more of a fine-tuning meet for us,”Snyder said. “It was still fun to compete in ahuge meet like this.”
The USD men won the 400-meter relay witha school-record clocking of 40.90, nearly a fullsecond ahead of South Dakota State. The timealso bumped USD to No. 1 in the Great WestConference.
The quartet for the Coyotes was MichaelBurrus, Brandon Kovash, Jared Clement andMatt Kerswell.
Kerswill later won the men’s 200-meter dashin a time of 21.83, with teammate JaredClement finished second.
On the women’s side, the Coyotes wonthree events.
Alexa Duling was first in the 200-meter dash(24.43), Carol Miller was first in the 800
(2:18.01) and Jasmine Mosley won the shot putwith a toss of 47 feet, 4.5 inches.
Though, Mosley admitted later that she wasfar from satisfied.
“All I wanted to do was better my own markbefore the conference meet, and this meet wasa good chance to do that,” Mosley said. “I was-n’t satisfied at all, but at least I’m staying in aconsistent pattern.
“I just have to move forward.”Moving forward was a goal for South Dakota
State’s Luke Leischner, a native of Parkston. The two-time defending champion in the
men’s 400-meter dash won for a third-straightyear with a first-place clocking of 47.54 on Fri-day.
“I wanted to get a little faster time for somebigger things coming up,” Leischner said, refer-ring to next week’s Summit League outdoormeet and the NCAA regionals.
“It wasn’t the greatest time, but I’ll take it.”Like USD, the Jackrabbits have their confer-
ence meet soon after the Dakota Relays, unlikeprevious years where there were two weeks be-tween each.
There was a heavy local presence in the fea-ture college women’s 800-meter run, as Augus-tana’s Molly Kokesh (Scotland) and SDSU’sKrista Creager (Yankton) finished 1-2, respec-tively.
One of the biggest stories on Friday wasn’ta record time, but instead an injury.
Near the end of the high school girls’ 100-meter dash, Oldham-Ramona-Rutland standoutsprinter Carly Carper pulled her right ham-string and crumbled to the track.
The crowd at Howard Wood Field wentsilent as Carper was attended to by medicalpersonnel.
It was a similar sight to last year’s statemeet, when former Rapid City Central standoutJasmyne King suffered a leg injury during the400-meter dash.
