MESSAGE

This year, PCSO celebrates a significant edition of the PCSO Presidential Gold Cup – not only is this the 42nd running of this race, it also occurs during the agency’s milestone 80th anniversary.

As the longest continuously-held sporting event in the country, the PCSO Gold Cup holds an iconic position in the world of horseracing and sports in general. Given the many economic and other challenges that society faces today, the fact that we still enjoy it today speaks of PCSO’s commitment to uphold its mandate to support racing.

PCSO brings the same dedication to all its endeavors, particularly those in line with its core service – providing medical – and healthcare-related assistance – and core activity – raising funds for charity.

On this, its 80th anniversary year, PCSO renews its vow of service to the Filipino people, who can be assured of the hope and help that agency offers.

And on this occasion, the 2014 PCSO Presidential Gold Cup in honor of President Benigno S. Aquino III, I wish the best of luck and safe journey to all the participants, and may racing fans enjoy another exciting event.

In behalf of the PCSO Board of Directors and the PCSO family, welcome to another chapter of this flagship race, and to all, a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

PUGAd LAwIN scores upset in 20

PCSO Gold Cup

d AYS after it was run, racing fans were still talking about the 41st PCSO Presidential Gold

Cup, where the outstanding favorite Hagdang Bato was defeated by nemesis Pugad Lawin.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> By Jenny OrtuOSte <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

The PCSO’s flagship racing event, held over 2,000 meters on 1 Dec. 2013 at the Manila Jockey Club’s San Lazaro Leisure Park, attracted ten runners with its first prize of P4 million – P3 million from PCSO plus P1 million from the Philippine Racing Commission.

Hagdang Bato, winner of the PCSO 2012 Gold Cup, was gunning for a back-to-back win. The talented 4YO colt of Mandaluyong Mayor Benhur C. Abalos had also won the PCSO Freedom Cup in Feb. 2013, the PCSO Silver Cup in July 2013, and the MARHO Classic in Nov. 20, among other victories.

In the 2013 PCSO Gold Cup, Hagdang Bato was sent off with over P600,000 in the Daily Double pool that totaled P674,000, with Spring Collection the remote second favorite, followed by My Champ and Pugad Lawin, who sold only P6,974 in the dd.

When the gates flew back, fans were dismayed to see Hagdang Bato’s front legs buckle under him at the jump-out, his belly almost grazing the sand. He recovered, but too late. Arriba Amor had

the lead, with the Jonathan Hernandez-guided Hagdang Bato trying to find a good path from sixth position.

At the back stretch, pack runner Pugad Lawin

with Patricio Dilema aboard gained the lead, followed by My Champ, Boss

Jaden, Hagdang Bato, and Divine eagle in that

order, followed by the five other runners.

Down the stretch, Pugad Lawin made good ground on the inside as My Champ staged a determined rally, slowly closing the gap between them, only to lose by

Jockey Dilema pumped a fist and grinned when he received his glass trophy, while trainer Ruben S. Tupas (who also conditions Hagdang Bato) wore his usual benevolent smile.

Dilema punched a fist in the air as he crossed the wire first, winning the Gold Cup again for only the second time since 2001 when he booted the legendary Wind Blown.

Hide Away Farm’s My Champ was a close second to win P1 million, followed by lawyer Sixto S. esquivias IV’s Boss Jaden in third for P500,000.

Hagdang Bato did not go home empty-handed, scoring P300,000 for his fourth-place finish.

The total time for the hotly-contested race was 2:11 (24-24’-27-28-27’).

The proud co-owners of 4YO colt Pugad Lawin, Antonio V. tan Jr. and Victor V. Ferrer Jr., wore red shirts for luck and sported ear-to-ear grins as they received their replica Gold Cup from PCSO Vice-Chairman and General Manager Jose Ferdinand M. Rojas II.

Mayor Abalos was in Rome when the race was held, but his connections who were

A spent-looking Hagdang Bato placed second, followed by Tensile Strength, Spinning Ridge, Steel Creation, Captain Ball, and Sulong Pinoy last.

The total time for the race was a leisurely 2:07.4 (25’-24’-25’-24’-27’).

Present at the awarding ceremony were, from PCSO, Vice-Chairman and General Manager Jose Ferdinand M. Rojas II, Committee on Races Chairman Jose T. Malang, and other committee members.

The host track, Santa Ana Park, was represented by Philippine Racing Club Chairman Santiago Cua Jr., executive Vice-President Allan Abesamis, and Assistant Racing Manager Eric Salido.

On hand to receive the heavy PCSO Silver Cup were the co-owners of Pugad

This year’s PCSO Silver Cup saw the two arch-rivals Hagdang Bato and Pugad Lawin meet again at Santa Ana Park last 1 June 2014 to battle for glory in one of the sport’s major stakes races and for the fat purse of P2.5 million.

Hagdang Bato, the defending champion of the event, was considered a shoo-in and emerged the outstanding favorite in the sales despite enduring a heartbreaking loss to Pugad

Pugad Lawin shocks in the 19th PCSO Silver Cup

It was like the 2013 PCSO Presidential Gold Cup all over again – a shocking encounter

between elite thoroughbreds with an unexpected outcome.

Pugad Lawin, on the strength of his being a “giant killer”, was the far – it would be more accurate to say “remote” - second choice in the Silver Cup, which attracted five other entries.

When the gates flew back for the 2,000 meter race,

Hagdang Bato, guided by Jonathan Hernandez, grabbed the early lead, while Pugad Lawin clung to his flank, the others running lengths behind.

Hari ng Yambo rules PCSO Freedom Cup

At six, he was the oldest in a field of ten horses.

But age didn’t stop veteran stakes winner Hari ng Yambo from trouncing the outstanding favorite to clinch this year’s PCSO Freedom Cup.

But it seems there was a karmic price to pay for that victory.

Pugad Lawin was the top choice, carrying over P361,000 in the Daily Double pool, with emmanuel Santos’s Hari ng Yambo the far second favorite selling at only around P6,000.

The speedy Golden empire carried the lead for most of the race, with Hot and Spicy,

Yambo started moving up to position himself as frontrunner by the far turn.

He came strongly down the center of the lane in the homestretch to win by nearly two lengths.

Manuel Alvarez’s Basic Instinct came in second, Lamberto Almeda Jr.’s Golden empire third, and Pugad Lawin fourth.

The win was worth P800,000 for Santos, trainer Renato C. Hipolito, and jockey John Paul A. Guce. Prizes were also given up to fourth place.

The runners set blistering quarters of 24-22’-22’-26’ on Malvar’s typically fast track for a total time of 1:35.4.

This time is more than two seconds better than the 1:37.8 of Hagdang Bato set at Santa Ana Park during the PCSO Grand derby in 202, listed in Philracom’s official track record as the record for the mile, that, however, still officially stands.

The Abalos-owned Hagdang Bato, who was initially declared for this race, was withdrawn after suffering a quarter crack that bled twice prior to the event. Racing fans were disappointed; they’d been expecting a grudge match between Hagdang Bato and his nemesis Pugad Lawin.

ANtONIO V. Tan’s veteran

campaigner Pugad Lawin easily won the PCSO 80th Anniversary Race on 2 Oct. 2014 at the Metro Turf racecourse, Malvar, Batangas.

The defending champion of the PCSO Presidential Gold Cup race won by ten lengths over Honorato Neri’s Sky Dragon, who came in second. Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Abalos’s el Libertador placed third and Tan’s Furniture King fourth and last.

Pugad Lawin (Refuse to Bend x Unstoppable Lady)

was ridden by Patricio Dilema instead of Jesse Guce who had fallen in a previous race. The clock stopped at 1:34 (24.2-21.8-22.6-25.4) for the mile race.

Fire Bull, with Jonathan Hernandez aboard, jumped well out off the gate, and ran off the pace to Hello Kaetee, burning up the track at the far turn to win easily by many lengths.

Hello kaetee placed second. The other two entries, Thunder Kat and Kadayawan, came in third and fourth respectively, but were hardly in contention at all.

The clock stopped at 1:44.8 (26’-25’-25’-27).

In one of those surprise outcomes that make horseracing so interesting, a fourth-choice longshot clobbered six other elite juveniles in this race.

The quickstepping Buzzer Beater was first out of the gate, with Hook Shot, the favorite and trial race winner, grabbing the lead before the bend. Super Spicy wrested the front by the far turn, but faded down the stretch, overtaken by Hook Shot and the John Alvin Guce-steered

Princess ella, the mere fourth choice in the sales, who staged a precocious rally to win by 1.5 lengths.

Princess ella, owned by SC Stockfarm and trained by Chito Santos, clocked 1:31 (13-24’-25-28’). Hook Shot was second, Jazz Asia third, and Polka Dot Bikini fourth.

tHE mad scramble to the finish line, the stiff jockeying for the

front post, and the ensuing unpredictability from the gate to the finish line makes the PCSO Presidential Gold Cup race the top horseracing spectacle of the year.

And why not? The Presidential Gold

Cup is the premier race run in the country. Only the best and the brightest among the locally-bred racehorses compete in this celebrated annual event. It is the culmination of all competition that takes place in the local racetracks.

But more than anything else, the PCSO Presidential

Gold Cup is a celebration. It is a celebration of everything and

anything that is beautiful and meaningful in horseracing. It is a celebration of life, so to speak, because an intense, galloping racehorse symbolizes life and all its ups and downs.

It is a celebration participated by all racing aficionados – from the jeepney barker and tricycle driver who go to the nearest off track betting station to wager a few pesos on their favorite racehorses, to the

big horseowners whose love for horseracing pushes them to take

good care of the racehorses and treat them not as

investments but as friends and partners.

Horseracing is fun. But its entertainment

Both Showtime and Sky Hook started moving up at the far turn and ran head to head down the stretch, an exciting move that had racing fans shouting themselves hoarse.

It was pretty close at the wire, but the judges declared it Sky Hook (a Hook and Ladder colt), by a neck. Showtime was second, followed by Valley Ridge. The time was 1:13.8 (24-23-26’).

in yet another exciting outcome for PCSO’s racing year.

With the field reduced to five entries after the scratching of Red Lakota, Takeitorleaveit, which won the trial race, was sent off as the favorite.

Mayweather took the lead, followed a length away by Pamulinawen. Driven and Takeitorleaveit followed behind, with Lady of Diamonds running last. It looked like a wire-to-wire shoo-in for the leader, but to everyone’s surprise, Driven (Hook and Ladder x My Gal’s Gold), only the fourth favorite, was steered by jockey Kelvin Abobo on a rally down the stretch to win by a length.

The time for the race was 1:23.2 (7-23’-24’-28’). Mayweather took second, followed by Takeitorleaveit, Lady of Diamonds, and Pamulinawen last.

ON 7 Oct. 1973, the PCSO Presidential Gold Cup was first run through the efforts of the late Capt. Nereo C.

Andolong [then-PCSO chairman] at the old San Lazaro Hippodrome in Tayuman.

It was witnessed by a jampacked crowd and the much-talked-about race involved side-bets in the race track. It was the face-off of perennial crowd favoritesIlocos King and Sun God.

The racing fans witnessed the expert handling by jockey Elias Ordiales of Sun God, crossing the wire on a muddy track and going on to defeat Ilocos King with jockey Cresencio Leona aboard. Sun God proved that a previous win of his over Ilocos King was not a fluke.

Ilocos King, owned by Constante Rubio, tasted his second consecutive defeat at the Philippine Racing Club, Inc.(PRCI) Horse of the Year race at Santa Ana Park. Sun God, owned by Don Pedro Cojuangco, clocked 2:19 for the distance of 2,000 meters at the old San Lazaro Hippodrome.

It’s possible that if the Presidential Gold Cup at the time was not limited to horses that had never won the

race before, Sun God would have been the first horse to achieve the first ever back-to-back victories.

On 5 Oct. 1974, Ilocos King with jockey Cresencio became the second horse to win the Presidential Gold Cup. He set the fastest winning time of 2:17 and broke the record of Sun God. The crowd at San Lazaro Hippodrome went wild when the official time was announced in the public address system. Racing fans were clamoring for a one-on-one or match race but it didn’t push through.

On 2 Nov. 1975, Henna’s Gold, owned by Ric Poblete and ridden by Andres Camba, became the third horse to win the Presidential Gold Cup and equalled the track record of Ilocos King.

The following year, Fiorella, owned by Gretchen Cojuangco and ridden by Jesus Guce, erased the old track record of Ilocos King and Henna’s Gold.

Gypsy Grey, owned by Canlubang Sugar Estate, attempted three times before becoming a winner in the Presidential Gold Cup. He posted a second place finish against Fiorella in 1976 and another second place to

side is most appreciated when racing fans see the best and the brightest among the current crop of locally bred racehorses competing in a race which offers the biggest pot of prize money ever.

Notwithstanding the prize money, the exercise of bragging rights by a gentleman-owner and his connections, which include the jockey, trainer, and grooms, is the paramount consideration and importance

especially when their horse wins the prestigious race.

PCSO has seen the wisdom of holding this most special race for outstanding Thoroughbreds, a prestigious race that honors the President of the country.

In 97, or 42 years ago, PCSO sponsored the first Presidential Gold Cup. Throngs of racing fans visited the racetrack to see the celebrated Sun God of the late Don Pedro Cojuangco

wallop its opponents. The late premier jockey elias Ordiales, the acknowledged master of the pace, guided Sun God, which later became the sire of a number of equally excellent racehorses.

The initial success encouraged PCSO to make the Presidential Gold Cup an annual event, the culmination

stablemate Little Morning in 1977.

The grey galloper finally won the Presidential Gold Cup in 1978, with Eduardo [Domingo] Jr. in the irons. He attempted for a back-to-back win but finished second to Peping Cojuangco’s Honor Roll in 1979.

On 12 Dec. 1982, the legendary Fair And Square (by Belgrave Square out of Fair Sea), ridden by Jesus Guce, became the first horse to win the elusive back-to-

back victory in the history of the Presidential Gold Cup. The chestnut colt was owned by Cesar and Herminia Mamon of C &H Enterprises.

of all competition in a year. This is the reason it is held every december.

But the succeeding Presidential Gold Cup events evolved to become celebrations of sort for all the good graces the racing community gets from horseracing.

It is simply not just another

stakes race. On the contrary, the racing community celebrates the gains and joys the racing fans collectively get from horseracing.

Horseracing gives fans the respite from the boredom of the dreary grind of daily life. It provides a shield from the gloom and doom of every disaster or calamity that strikes the country with impunity. It enables fans to cope with all the anxieties and doubts that haunt daily existence.

With the President giving us the cue to go on living and making the most out of it, we give our collective attention to make every Presidential Gold Cup race a success.

The national prominence every Presidential Gold Cup race enjoys would not be complete without the commitment and support of the racing fans, who believe that horseracing is fun, and that life is worth living with horseracing.

Sun Dancer, a progeny of Fair and Square, duplicated the same feat in 1989 and 1990.

On 6 Dec. 2009, Don Enrico dominated the 37th Presidential Gold Cup. He came away not only with the biggest purse of his entire career but also denied Ibarra the chance for a back-to-back victory in the Presidential Gold Cup at the San Lazaro Leisure Park in Carmona, Cavite.

The following year, Ibarra competed in the Presidential Gold Cup but Yes Pogi won the race. Ibarra finished fourth behind Righthererightnow and Go Army. It was one of Ibarra’s unplaced finishes in his racing career.

On 1 Dec. 2013 at SLLP, Hagdang Bato, the half-brother of Ibarra, sought to become the sixth horse gunning for a back-to-back victory in the Presidential Gold Cup (which Ibarra failed to accomplish) but lost to Pugad Lawin. Hagdang Bato finished fourth behind My Champ and Boss Jaden. It was also one of Hagdang Bato’s unplaced finishes. –NIHAWMA

wItH Mandaluyong Mayor Benhur C. Abalos’s Hagdang Bato recently routing the field in the 2014 Philracom Amb. eduardo Cojuangco Jr. (eCJ) Cup last Nov. 30 during the Metropolitan Association of Race Horse Owners (MARHO) Ruby Racing Festival, racing fans expect no less than a sterling performance from this progeny of Quaker Ridge out of Fire Down Under.

Why not? Still fresh in the minds of aficionados is that in the eCJ Cup, Crucis tried to pull a fast one and jumped out of the gate quickly,

stamina, it registered a time of 2:04.6 for the grueling 2,000 meters at the Manila Jockey Club’s San Lazaro Leisure Park, just a fraction off the record for the distance (2:04.4, held by Wild Orchid, Stowaway Lass, and Yes, Pogi).

The quarter clockings (15-23-25’-25’-25’) of Hagdang Bato for the eCJ Cup, however, reveal that its establishment of a new record is not far off. The strong finish of 25’ showed that Hagdang Bato had plenty to spare and this is a cause

banking perhaps on Hagdang Bato’s reputation of being a hesitant pacer and loving to run on its own pace.

But Jonathan B. Hernandez, Hagdang Bato’s able rider, would have none of it and ran after Crucis immediately and wrested the lead with ease. In the process, Hagdang Bato not only proved versatility and

for serious concern for the connections of the other participants in the Gold Cup.

Antonio “Tony” V. Tan and Quezon City Councilor Victor “Jun” V. Ferrer Jr., co-owners of Pugad Lawin (Refuse to Bend x Unstoppable Lady), while probably anxious, will of course entertain hopes of a victory by their horse. even if we go by the names alone of its progenitors, we know that Pugad Lawin will be a tough nut to crack as he will refuse to bend to pressure and try to be unstoppable.

Pugad Lawin is only one of two runners who have the distinction of beating the “People’s Champ” (as race presenter Macky Maceda calls Hagdang Bato) to the finish line and the sole campaigner to do this twice.

The first time was in the 2013 edition of the PCSO Gold Cup held at SLLP, which win many were quick to brand as a fluke owing to the fact that

Hagdang Bato nearly stumbled whilst bolting out of the gate in that race.

The second time was at the Philippine Racing Club’s Santa Ana Park six months later, with which win Pugad Lawin made the critics swallow their tongues.

The absence of jockey Jesse B. Guce, the former jockey of Pugad Lawin who is now sidelined due to injury, should not dishearten Pugad Lawin’s backers since it was Patricio Dilema who steered Pugad Lawin to victory in last year’s Gold Cup, and needless to state, rider and runner are familiar with each other.

While the others may be concerned because the recent performances of Hagdang Bato outshine those of

Pugad Lawin, one

headstrong fan concludes that “You can throw away the record books because once Hagdang Bato sees Pugad Lawin, Hagdang Bato will lose his confidence. He will remember that Pugad

Lawin is his master.” How does one contest this line of reasoning? Who knows what goes on in the minds of the horses or how they think?

Whatever it is, is the PCSO Gold Cup in the bag for Pugad Lawin?

Not if the connections of Kaiserslautern (Showing Up x Freudenfest) of Mayor Leonardo “Sandy” M. Javier, Jr.’s, My Champ (Baseball Champion x Romantic Thriller) of Hideaway Farm Corp., Mr. Bond (Alim x Flavorofthemonth) of Herminio S. esguerra, and el Libertador of the Abalos stable (Perfect Cut x Savannah Wind) have something to say about it.

My Champ and Mr. Bond will likely lie in wait for the outcome of an extended speed duel between Hagdang Bato and Pugad Lawin and try to snatch a win by charging in the last 300 meters or so.

On the other hand, we can expect el Libertador and kaiserslautern to content themselves with the third or fourth spot,

keeping as little distance as possible between them

and whoever is in the lead and attacking at the start of the early third canto when the opportunity presents itself.

In the end, as they say, there can be only one – champion, that is, of the 2014 PCSO Gold

Cup. Still, at this point, the

contestants deserve our congratulations for having reached this far.

LASt 8 Sept. 2014 was a memorable day for PCSO, when the

agency broke ground for its permanent headquarters at its property at San Marcelino Street, Ermita, Manila.

The event coincides with the 80th anniversary year of the agency, which was founded in 1934.

Present at the ceremony were the members of the PCSO Board of Directors: Acting

A Holy Mass was held, followed by speeches from GM Rojas, Guild of executives and Managers of Sweepstakes (GeMS) President Conrado C. Zabella, and Sweepstakes employees Union (SeU) President Joel Pastores. The ceremonial groundbreaking and laying of a time capsule followed after.

The time capsule contains memorabilia such as the project brief, Lotto draw balls, Lotto and Sweepstakes tickets, tokens from each of the directors, and other items that hopefully will prove of interest to posterity.

The opening of the time capsule has been set for 20 years from now, on PCSO’s 100th anniversary.

What’s going to rise at the PCSO’s San Marcelino property?

The PCSO Board of Directors has envisioned a three-building complex to be called the “PCSO Center.” One building will be dedicated to charity services, another to the gaming sector, and the third for executive and administrative offices.

Chua Chiaco of the Professional Regulation Commission; and the PCSO family.

The San Marcelino site, which covers 1.1 hectares, will also have ample space for public and employees’ parking.

All aspects of design and construction will be bid out, with the project to be completed by 2018, if not sooner.

The San Marcelino property was acquired on 8 Oct. 1962 from the Manila Club for P1.8

million pesos. It was PCSO’s first real property under its name.

The agency was housed in one building there until 1995, when the head office transferred to the Quezon Institute building on e. Rodriguez Ave., Quezon City. The Security Printing and several other departments remained at San Marcelino.

In 2010, upon the Department of Public Works and Highways’s advice of earthquake risk, the PCSO head office was transferred to the PICC Complex in Pasay City.

Because the Asia Pacific economic Conference Summit will be held at PICC in 2015 and renovations need to be made to the facilities there, PCSO moved to a building in Mandaluyong City, where it is temporarily staying until the PCSO Center is constructed.

But wherever PCSO’s offices are located, and at all times, PCSO employees have served the people without fail, delivering medical- and health-care related assistance to those who need it, when they need it.

The government’s charity agency now comes home to Manila, where the public may easily and conveniently submit their requests for medical- and healthcare-related assistance and avail of other services and products.

As it celebrates eighty years of service, PCSO as an agency remains dedicated, now and always, to its mission of charity.

“And now there remain faith, hope, and charity, these three: but the greatest of these is charity.” – 1st Corinthians 13:13.

PCSO, Philracom, MJC sign Gold Cup MOA. PCSO entered once more into a memorandum of agreement to stage the PCSO Presidential Gold Cup with the Philippine Racing Commission (Philracom) and host track Manila Jockey Club.

As in the past several years, Philracom will augment, with an additional P1 million prize, PCSO’s purse of P3 million for the winner.

The signatories and witnesses to the agreement were (in photo, L-R, front row) PCSO Gaming Sector Assistant General Manager Conrado C. Zabella, Philracom Chairman Angel L. Castaño Jr., PCSO Acting Chairman and General Manager Jose Ferdinand M. Rojas II, Manila Jockey Club (MJC) President and COO Alfonso G. Reyno III, MJC Chairman and CEO Alfonso R. Reyno Jr., and Philracom Comm. Jesus B. Cantos.

On hand to witness the event were members of the PCSO Racing Committee and Philracom and personnel from MJC. (JLO)

THE PCSO lot in San Marcelino, Manila was the first

property acquired by the agency. It consists of three parcels of land with a total area of11,963.06 sq.m. Formerly owned by the Manila Club - a general partnership of Ross, Selph & Carrascoso, and Sycip, Gorres, Velayo & Co. -it was offered by Manila Club’s Board of Trustees to the PCSO’s Board of Directors for sale.

After a series of negotiations, on October 9, 1962, the PCSO Board, headed by Chairman Vicente G. Martinez, with endorsement from the Office of the President thru Executive

Secretary Salvador L. Marino, under Board Resolution No. 404 approved the full payment of Php 1,800,000 representing acceptance of Manila Club’s offer.

The Deed of Sale was executed on October 10, 1962 in Manila in favour of Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. It was signed by Atty. Antonio T. Carrascoso Jr., in behalf of Ross, Selph & Carrascoso; Mr. Ramon Gorres, in behalf of Sycip, Gorres, Velayo & Co.; Mr. Vicente G. Martinez, PCSO Chairman; Atty. Ignacio Santos-Diaz, Vice-Chairman and General Manager; and Atty. Conrado V. Matutina, PCSO Secretary.

Necessary preparations for the transfer of the property were immediately made and several improvements followed thereafter. A few decades later, the number of its employees grew so that the agency needed to move to a more spacious place. It was moved to Quezon City in 1997, then to Pasay City in 2010, and to Mandaluyong City in 2014. Still, some departments remained in the old San Marcelino Office.

After 17 years of being away, the PCSO will be coming back home, and proof of this was the ground breaking ceremony held on September 8, 2014.

PCSO grants hearing enhancer

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> By lOWela luPiSan <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

BONIFACIO dela Cruz Jr. is a 67-year-old retired OFW. He worked as a truck driver in Saudi Arabia. For sixteen

years Mang Bonifacio endured being away from his wife and eight children to provide for the increasing financial needs of his family. Since his retirement in 1998, his family has been noticing signs of his weakening hearing ability.

He would watch television with high volume and would become unreasonably sensitive, leading to fights with his wife and grandchildren because of misunderstandings. Aling Rosita and their children incessantly encouraged him to seek medical help but to no avail.

After more than a decade of convincing, Mang Bonifacio finally agreed to consult a specialist and wass recently diagnosed to have a bilateral moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss, sloping to profound hearing loss at high frequency.

Sensorineural losses can sometimes be helped by drugs, but in most cases, a hearing aid is the most effective way to improve hearing.

A hearing aid is an electroacoustic medical device designed to amplify sound for the wearer, with the aim of making speech more intelligible and to correct impaired hearing. each unit costs P18,000.00 to P19,000.00.

A specialist from the ear Unit of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) recommended the use ofa behind-the-ear digital convention hearing aid for Mang Bonifacio as treatment. The use of hearing aids may not bring back Mang Bonifacio’s normal hearing ability, but it can make his communication, social interaction, work, and daily activities easier and more enjoyable.

However, the prohibitive cost of the device and their financial constraint made the family desperate for help. Since his retirement, the

Rosita and Bonifacio de la Cruz sought assistance from PCSO to provide the latter with a hearing enhancer.

couple has been financially dependent on the support of their children.

Aware of the financial difficulties of Mang Bonifacio, the consultant from PGH endorsed his case to PCSO. The agency is been recognized for itscharitable assistance to the underprivileged sectors of society who are in need of financial and medical aidthrough its Individual Medical Assistance Program (IMAP).

PCSO IMAP’s main objective is to assist disadvantaged individuals with medical and health problems achieve physical recovery and restore them to normal social functioning by providing medical assistance.

On July 22, Mang Bonifacio, together with his wife Aling Rosita, unmindful of the continuous rains and with the hope that he would be granted financial assistance for the purchase of the hearing aid devices he needs, submitted the required documents to a social service worker of PCSO.

After going through the process of evaluation and verification of documents and interview, Mang Bonifacio in the next four days, will hopefully have improved hearing and will be productive again as PCSO grants his request for a hearing enhancer.

HAVE you ever wondered about the origin of the PCSO logo?

In 1968, under the stewardship of Chairman Manuel Barretto, Atty. Romy Pefianco decided that PCSO needed a corporate logo that was attractive and symbolic while capturing the agency’s mission, vision, and mandate.

The History of the PCSO Logo

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> By JuStine B. SantOS <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Presidential Gold Cup. Artist Manuel “Manny” Baldemor,

an assistant of Malang, contributed to the design of the prestigious trophy.

The first sketches of the logo reflected a black and white design.

The final version of the logo used the colors of the Philippine flag, signifying PCSO’s presence nationwide. The original eight provincial district offices are Pangasinan, Legaspi, Iloilo, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, davao, tacloban, and Zamboanga.

Since then, PCSO has been using the same powerful and distinctive logo, recognizable to people all over the country as the sign for hope and help during times of need.

Mauro ‘Malang’ Santos

Manuel ‘Manny’ Baldemor

The logo’s design and concept were fashioned by well-known artist Mauro “Malang” Santos, who also designed the PCSO

The early PCSO logo design was also used on the Sweepstakes tickets.

The yellow “S” in the middle represents the Sweepstakes which was originally larger than the surrounding ones. The surrounding white “S” designed like a pinwheel represents the eight (8) original provincial offices of PCSO. The original round shape bounding the S- type pinwheel was originally not present. Minor improvements were made later on.
