Annual Report2016 - 17July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017
Evolutions and Transformations As PCS finishes its 54th year, our team has reflected on all we’ve accomplished and the incredible evolution that has taken place in the field of behavioral health during that time. PCS was founded the same year the Community Mental Health Act was signed into law by President John F. Kennedy. Since then, our country has shifted away from institutionalization, developed a robust network of community behavioral health agencies, refined diagnostic criteria, demanded parity for mental health treatment, and developed medications that target the receptors and chemicals in the brain linked with mental illness. Though not without challenges, these changes have transformed the way we provide behavioral health care.
At PCS, we too have undergone significant transformation. From our early days as a handful of pastors and clergy providing counseling and guidance to youth, PCS now employs 71 licensed clinicians and 48 highly trained qualified mental health specialists (QMHS). Accredited by the Ohio Department of Mental Health Services and the Council on Accreditation (COA), we build treatment plans in an EHR, provide comprehensive counseling and psychotherapy that is driven by evidence-based practice, and can prescribe critical medications to help improve clients’ overall mental health. Our school-based therapy program now serves nearly 3,000 students in a total of 77 Northeast Ohio schools.
We closed out 2017 preparing for two of our biggest transformations yet — Behavioral Health Redesign and the retirement of one of PCS’s greatest champions. After 45 years of service, Rev. Byron Arledge announced that he would hand over the reigns as president and CEO to Megan Kleidon in 2018. Change is difficult, but we are excited about the next chapter in the PCS story, and remain steadfast in our commitment to our mission. Thank you for your unwavering support as we rise to meet the needs of those we serve. We are grateful to be on this journey with you.
2016-17 was a year of continued growth for PCS, as we expanded our footprint into new schools and broadened our reach with both youth alcohol and drug prevention and aging support services. It was our first year living in our new consolidated space at 611 W. Market Street in Akron’s Highland Square neighborhood, and we continued to establish new partnerships and referral sources within the community to allow for a broader reach and impact.
Program Highlights:School-Based Therapy and Case Management
• Expanded to a new charter school and added a new school district as a partner.
• Broadened our out-of-school program impact during the summer months, serving nearly 200 students per week in need of mental health services and support.
• Received full re-accreditation from COA (Council on Accreditation) through 2021.
Outpatient Services at the Vassel Center• Opened our new Vassel Center in the summer of
2016, with a warm and inviting reception and waiting area, private therapy offices and dedicated space for psychiatry and other services.
• Certified a team of clinicians as Clinical Trauma Professionals and introduced our first clients to the Vassel sensory room. Designed to help treat trauma, ADHD and PTSD, the sensory room allows clients to use their senses to help process their emotions.
• Added an additional prescriber to our team to meet increased medication management needs.
