Issue : 188 13 December, 2019

Misuse of water has to be stoppedIt is a common fact that if corrective measures are not taken im-

mediately, there is going to be acute shortage of fresh potable drink-ing water in the near future. There is a need to increase public aware-ness on the importance of conservation, preservation and protectionof water resources and drinking water supply. After air, water is thesecond most essential lifeline for the survival of human beings. Na-ture created adequate resources for their survival, however becauseof meddling by the human beings, the resources have not only beenpolluted, they have also been depleted due to gross mismanagement.Pollution from land-based sources is greatly affecting the aquatic bio-logical resources and biodiversity. Rampant use of pesticides is fur-ther making the fresh water resources unusable.

Though water is one of the replenish able resources, yet due todepleting green cover because of excessive deforestation andconsequent reduction in rainfall, perennial drought like situationhas been created in many parts of our country. It is because of thisreason it has become all the more important to conserve water, besides finding means to replenish the aquifers. While each one ofus can do our bit by conserving water at home and being morecautious while using it, the real solution lies in rainwater harvest-ing, which has to be followed religiously wherever possible.

Rainwater harvesting technique is two pronged. Firstly, by col-lecting rain water from roof tops and open catchment areas andstoring in huge underground sumps and secondly by arresting thesurface run off into the rivers and seas by constructing percolationchambers to recharge the aquifer. The former has a limitation thatit can be adopted only during monsoons. Besides, it requires hugeinvestment by way of construction of water retaining structures. The latter is a long-term solution and shall go a long way in mak-ing this vital resource available for human consumption. Even forplaces like Mumbai/ Navi Mumbai, where sub soil water is notpotable in many areas, collection of surface run off into artificiallycreated lakes after treating them for water retainment, can pro-vide viable solution. This rainwater after treatment can be usedfor all purposes. Further, the sewage treatment plants can be pro-vided in the residential complexes as the recycled water can beused at least for washing vehicles and horticulture purposes. Be-sides, this shall prevent pollution of water bodies into which thissewage would have been otherwise discharged.

It is heartening that many of the schools, colleges and residen-tial complexes are utilizing this technique and are thus contribut-ing immensely in conserving water. The town planning authoritiesshould also implement this in letter and spirit and thus save thehuman civilization from evident disaster in making on account ofdepleting water resources.

CAB-Wrong decisionThe Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) is a

wrong decision to have been made by the govern-ment. People of all religions and communitieshave lived in India since years. Even their ances-tors have lived here. Then why this indifference? Why are our political parties always trying todivide India on the basis of one’s religion? OurConstitution does not discriminate people on re-ligious grounds. Ours is a secular country andone should not bring religion into the picture forgranting citizenship. Civil society should opposethe bill.

Sena settles vengeanceIn the first move to checkmate the Bharatiya

Janata Party (BJP), The Maha Vikas Aghadi gov-ernment cancelled 400 political appointments, in-dependent directors or non-government membersmade by the Fadnavis government to settle thescores with BJP. The CM has given the approvaland it appears rather ridiculous and just vendet-ta politics. Thus Sena wanted to share the spoilswith new allies just to accommodate party sup-porters and sympathisers and has no face valuefor a change. By scrapping 400 BJP Governmentappointments, Sena led government wanted tosettle their vengeance and it looks somewhatfishy. Instead of just concentrating on develop-ment, the CM is trying his hand with unwantedreactions as a new comer to the CM’s chair.

A Right step in theRight direction

The controversial Citizenship (Amendment)Bill is cleared in the Rajya Sabha with 125 vot-ing for it and 105 voting against in a marathonmove. The legislation is now likely to face legalchallenge in the Supreme Court on the ground ofbeing unconstitutional.

After getting cleared in both the houses, thereis no case for going to court but the oppositionheaded by Congress is thinking in terms of pro-viding headache to the government. By throw-ing this law in the laps of the judges, we are notgoing to achieve anything significant than wast-ing time of the judiciary.

Team India tastes T-20 series winWest Indies team led by Kieron Pollard played

into India’s hands by putting Virat Kohli’s side tobat first at the Wankhede Stadium and that was awrong move in Indian conditions. Team India notonly decimated Caribbean attack to shreds andmade a 240 score in 20 overs to make a big differ-ence. Rahul, Rohit and Kohli made first use of thewicket to their advantage to score half centuries inwhirlwind fashion and the Windies side could notstand up to the pressure. Pollard lost ideas and thebowlers were hit of the park and it was an one sideaffair afterwards. Team India applied pressure byclaiming the early wickets and West Indies couldnot recover from the early shock and surrenderthe match without semblance of fight. The touringside lost by 67 runs and thus losing the series by 1-2 after showing some fight in the second match atThiruvananthapuram.

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has lauded theIndian cricket team for putting up a “fearless bat-ting” performance in the just-concluded T20 seriesagainst the West Indies. India won the third andfinal T20I in Mumbai by 67 runs to claim the se-ries 2-1. Team India played to a plan, whereas WestIndies lacked idea and instead of making first useof the wicket they made a mess of the toss, thematch and the series. After scoring over 200 runsin the first match at Hyderabad and lost it withpoor captaincy and pathetic bowling.

Rohit Sharma became the fastest batsman andthe first Indian to hit 400 sixes in internationalcricket. He achieved the landmark in his 354thinternational match across formats during the thirdT20I in Mumbai. He is only the third player over-all to cross the milestone after former Pakistanand West Indies captains Shahid Afridi (476 sixes)and Chris Gayle (534 sixes). The sixer break up is:Tests matches- 52, ODI - 232, T-20- 116.

Rohit has been a stalwart for India at the top ofthe order in limited-overs cricket. While his Testcareer did not hit the same heights for a long time, the Indian team’s decision to let him open the bat-ting seems to have done the trick. In his first se-ries as India’s Test opener against South Africa inOctober, Rohit broke the record for most sixes hitduring a Test series by hitting 19 maximums. Hescored a whopping 529 runs in four innings which

included a maiden Test double ton. In all, it wasan emphatic series win for Team India.

Schools should provide Ca-reer Counselling after Board

examinationsThrough your esteemed newspaper, I would

like to highlight a few issues that the childrenof Standard 10th and 12th face after their Boardexaminations. The major issue with the kidsstudying in 10th and 12th standard is what todo next? What are the career options available?Who could guide me with the different streamsand sections of the curriculum? Such questionsare very common amongst the kids, especiallyonce they have finished their schooling and arelooking forward to choose the subject or thestream they want to make a career in.

Today my question to all these schools andcolleges on why can’t they help kids with theircareer and provide proper career guidance? Ihave witnessed the same issue during my ca-reer guidance, none of the teachers in the schoolsprovide kids with proper career counselling. Itshould be made mandatory in all schools andJunior Colleges to provide kids with proper ca-reer counselling sessions through which theyare able to get know the various career optionsavailable.

Also, the schools must conduct differenttypes of aptitude test so that the children un-derstand where they stand and what should bedone to attain their preferable career option.Every year kids face these issues during theircollege admissions and sometimes they even endup opting for streams they don’t have interestdue to the lack of information about career op-tions. It is very important for the schools andfor that matter even Junior Colleges to providechildren with career options. Also, the admis-sion process is one big issue for the children es-pecially after 10th standard, they are totallyunaware of the online process. Schools shouldinclude sessions on how to apply online for col-leges which would be helpful for the kids to optfor correct options. It would hardly take an hourand guiding kids through this should be consid-ered mandatory in all Schools.

An easy way to multiply thenumber 99 with any other number.

First take the number by which99 has to be multiplied then minusit by 100. This way you get the lasttwo numbers of the answer.

If it is single unit number put a0 before the answer.

Now minus 1 from the numberwith which 99 was being multiplied. This number will make the firsthalf of the answer.

For example if you want to findthe answer for 68X99.

You minus 68 from 100 (ie) 100-68=32. The last two numbers areready now.

Now minus 1 from 68 (ie) 68-1=67.

This is your first half of the an-swer.

So the answer 673291X99 = Last two numbers 100-

91=09and again 91-1=90 Answer 9009Likewise 74x99=732688x99=871299x99=980142x99=4158

The twelve days of Christmas

By Jubel D’Cruz

The birth of JesusChrist in Bethlehemushered in an era ofsalvation. Only whenevery individual expe-riences this salvation,Christmas becomes ameaningful celebra-tion. The love of Godmanifested in the com-ing of the Messiah is tomake sure that no oneis abandoned to thecurse of death. The twoimportant figures inthe manger, Mary andJoseph, reveal to us

the true meaning ofChristmas.

Christmas will be acelebration for us onlywhen we are able tolook back into our pastand take count of ev-ery bit of pain that weendure as an invest-ment for the sake ofJesus Christ. It is insuch moments of hard-ship that our commit-ment to Christ mani-fests the power of love.As Mother Maryspread the pieces ofcloth she managed tosave up in order towrap her baby in com-fort, so shall we weavetogether our experienc-es of brokenness andoffer it for Christ Jesus

to be born into ourlives. As we celebratethe birth of Jesus thismonth, let us not for-get to show mercy tothe poor and the aban-doned, the helpless andthe orphans. Let uscelebrate Christmasfully within our finan-cial limits, and at thesame time, we must re-member to give thanksto God for the goodnessand mercy He hasshown in our lives. Andat the end of the year,we must spend sometime in prayer for theNew Year’s blessingsand for God’s guidance. The New Year willthen be a blessing forus.

December 25 is notthe actual birth date ofJesus Christ. The datewas selected as the dayof Christmas becauseit was around the timeof various Pagan festi-vals, such as the Ro-man Saturnalia.

Most people knowthat Christians cele-brate Christmas as thebirthday of JesusChrist, but it alsomeans much more. Itmeans having funwith your family andfriends, spending timewith them, seeing allthe decorative Christ-mas items, decoratingthe Christmas tree, singing carols, spend-ing time in prayer and

eating all the deliciousfood and homemadesweets.

Among the variouscelebrations connectedwith Christmas, thesending of Christmascards to friendsand relatives has be-come a ritual.

Another feature ofthe festival isthe installing ofChristmas trees. Littlefir trees or replicas ofthem are decoratedand gifts are placed onthem. Little childrenbelieve that thegifts placed on theChristmas trees havebeen placed by Santa.

Christmas is a cel-ebration of love, peace

and joy. But however, this season of spiritu-al happiness has overthe years been overtak-en by superficial cele-bration, be it with fan-cy greeting cards, dec-orations, gifts, deckingup, feasting, in aphrase an occasion forthe rich and fashion-able.

Christmas is cele-brated for twelve days— from December25 th till January6th and there is a songbased on the twelvedays of Christmaswhich is sung duringthe Christmas seasonby both children andadults.
