Strategies for Teaching Behavioral Expectations

• Define in concrete terms• Link the expectation with typical routines• Discuss what it means• Demonstrate what it looks and sounds

like• Practice when, where, and how• Reinforce or Re-teach• Follow up with booster sessions

Page 21: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Who Will Deliver the Lessons?

• Option 1: (best option) – Students rotate into designated areas – A universal team member(s) takes the lead on

providing instruction in a designated area

• Advantage – quality control and consistency in delivery of lesson; students get the opportunity to see a model/practice in the area

• Consideration – developing & coordinating the rotation schedule

Page 22: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Who Will Deliver the Lessons?

• Option 2: – Students rotate into designated areas (or stay in

classroom)– Individual teachers provide instruction

• Advantage: Gets teaching staff directly involved in teaching the expectations; students get the opportunity to see a model/practice in the area

• Consideration: ensuring consistent quality of instruction and message; developing and coordinating the schedule

Page 23: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Who Will Deliver the Lessons?

• Option 3:– Universal team members deliver instruction via the

school’s TV network– Individual teachers facilitate activities or discussion

• Advantage: quality control and consistency in delivery of lesson; gets teachers involved; coordination is a bit easier

• Consideration: students do not get the experience of seeing a model or practicing in the location

Page 24: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Who Will Deliver the Lessons?

• Option 4:– Incorporate upper classman into the delivery of lesson

• Advantage: peer responsive, development of peer leadership and student ownership

• Consideration: need to work with students to sufficiently prepare for their role in supporting the delivery of instruction on social behaviors

Page 25: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Planning Instruction for Transitions & Routines

• A transition occurs when there is a change in routine; one task or activity is ending and another is beginning.

• 2 types of transitions:

1. Changing locations (from regular class to gym, lunch, music etc.)

2. Changing activities (from Math to English, or free time to work time)

Page 26: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Effective Transitions & Routines:

1. Reduces the chances of class disruptions and problem behavior from occurring

2. Increases the number of opportunities and amount of time spent for instruction

3. Helps to maintain optimal learning environments

4. Gives indirect feedback regarding pace at which student is working

Page 27: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Team Time Instructions

• As a team consider the different format variations for conducting the instructional event

• Discuss the pros and cons of the different variations for your school

• Develop a preliminary plan for what your instructional event will look like

Please return to the whole group

in 15 minutes

Page 28: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Suggestions for Signaling Transitions & Routines

• Gain attention prior to start

• Use multiple warning signals (visual and auditory)

• Give reminders of expectations

• Minimize down time

• Ensure transitioning to a structured activity/environment

Page 29: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Ensure ALL Students Participate in the Instructional Event

• Make sure that all classes; including resource and self-contained special education classes, are invited to be a part of the instructional event

• Consider the needs of students with disabilities and possible accommodations that might need to be in place

• Consider the needs of students who need instruction and materials in another language

Page 30: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

• Strategy 1: Contact special education teachers and provide them with the materials as early as possible so they can determine the necessary accommodations

• Strategy 2: Embed highly utilized accommodations / modifications as part of the process (e.g., handout of the location expectations) to make the instruction accessible to all students

Page 32: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities

• Use picture icons for the expectations

• Develop social stories to teach a routine

• Incorporate use of the tickets into individual behavior plans

• Pair up with peer buddy(ies)

• Build expectations into daily plans, behavior charts, etc.

Page 33: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Team Time Instructions

• As a team consider the needs of students with disabilities at your schools

• Discuss a plan for how you will ensure students with disabilities who have accommodation/modification needs will be supported to be a part of AND successful during the instructional event

Please return to the whole group in 15 minutes

Page 34: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Using Video With Your Instructional Event

• Schools develop three types of videos in conjunction with their instructional events:

– Videos to use as part of the instructional process & to orient new students

– Short commercials that reinforce a targeted idea

– Videos to document their event

Page 35: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Using Video With Your Instructional Event

• Instructional Videos– Role plays by location that have students act

out/talk through the expectations for that area– Can use action and still pictures– The main message should focus on what you

want student to do

Page 36: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Using Video With Your Instructional Event

• Short Commercials– 1-3 minute videos that reinforce a specific

targeted idea e.g., “Remember to wear your ID;” “Be on time”

– Can use action and still pictures– The main message should focus on what you

want student to do– Typically shown in homeroom or during

announcements

Page 37: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Using Video With Your Instructional Event

• Documenting Your Event– A montage of images that provide an

overview of your instructional event– Share with parents, superintendent, BOE, and

community members– Some schools post a link on their website;

show on the district cable station– Can be a helpful tool to solicit donations

Page 38: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Suggestions for Developing Quality Videos: Planning for Your Video

• Role Play Videos:– Recruit a student committee to develop and act in the

videos– Work with the students to develop scripts for the role

plays that have a clear message– Ensure the role play has a clear instructional

message– Have students narrate and introduce video scenarios

• Video to Document the Event– Develop a recording plan of what footage is a priority– Know when and where priority activities are

happening– Work with the key people participating in the activity

to be videoed

Page 39: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Suggestions for Developing Quality Videos: Getting the Footage

• Have videographers work in teams

• Better to get more footage and edit – then not get enough

• Use an mounted microphone – don’t rely on the in-camera mic

• When possible use a tripod or stabilizer – try to keep the camera steady

Page 40: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Suggestions for Developing Quality Videos: Editing and Producing Video

• Role Play Videos– If using contrasting role plays sequence the “what not

to do” first followed by the “right way”– Include text at the bottom of the screen that reinforces

the right way: “walk in the halls”

• Videos to Document the Event– Use intro headers so the viewer knows what they are

watching– Edit footage into a series of short scenarios that

illustrate key ideas/messages from the day

Page 41: PBSIS: Day 4 Training. Overview of Day Updates on: –Posters –Student Recognition Systems –Fundraising Planning the Instructional Event Developing your

Developing Quality VideosExamples

• Videos of student role play– West Deptford Middle School– Thomas Jefferson Middle School – Lodi
