Local jazz stars, saxophonist Bobby Watson and vocalist Kevin Mahogany, will join the Kansas City Symphony for the Bank of America Celebration at the Station on Sunday, May 29 at 8 p.m.

This year’s theme, “Coming Home to Kansas City,” features a special program honoring Kansas City and its veterans. Associate Con-ductor Aram Demirjian will lead the Kansas City Symphony and special guests in a two-hour concert. “The concert will include many of our annual favorites, ‘Armed Forces Salute,’ ‘Stars and Stripes Forever’ and ‘1812 Overture,’ as well as some very Kansas City-centric songs played by two of our finest jazz musicians,” Demirjian said.

The symphony also welcomes back special guest narrator CNBC’s Jim Birdsall and the U.S. Air Force Band of Mid-America Brass Ensemble for this year’s event. The concert culminates when all eyes turn skyward for KC’s largest display of choreographed fireworks, presented to the beat of patriotic music above the National WWI Museum at Liberty Memorial.

“Music has long been intimately associated with times of national remembrance, mourning and celebration, and there is no better way to bring the community together for this wonderful free concert,” said Frank Byrne, executive director of the Kansas City Symphony.

Tune into KCPT at 7:45 p.m. for a pre-show broadcast with special veterans features and interviews with the stars from the evening’s performance. If you’re unable to attend the event, KCPT will be doing a live broadcast and will re-air the event on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30.

The Bank of America Celebration at the Station is the largest free Memorial Day weekend event in the Midwest and keeps the whole family in mind. The site opens at 1 p.m. with pre-concert entertainment, food trucks and the Lee Jeans Celebration Family Zone. All pre-concert events close at 7:30 p.m. Join Gary Sinise and Joe Mantegna as they co-host the 27th broadcast of the National Memorial Day Concert live from the West Lawn at the U.S. Capitol. Be there to remember and honor the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, their families at home, and all those who have given their lives for our country.

Since the draft ended in 1973, the number of Americans who serve in the armed forces has decreased dramatically, leading to what some fear is a lack of understanding between our military and civilian populations. This spring KCPT is partnering with Veterans Coming Home, a national public media initiative, to bridge America’s military-civilian divide by telling stories, challenging stereotypes and exploring how the values of service and citizenship are powerful connectors for all Americans. From donning the red and white uniform in April to his final appearance in August of that year, Robinson became a vital member of the team along with the legendary Satchel Paige. Robinson played shortstop while Paige was a for-hire pitcher. The Monarchs, unfortunately, didn’t see the playoffs during the ’45 season with its .510 record.For a record of Robinson’s single season with the Monarchs, including some of the team’s—and history’s—most pivotal moments go to flatlandkc.org. The Kansas City Monarchs played 101 games against 18 teams across the East Coast and Midwest. By the end of the season, Robinson had the best average on the team at .375. During this time Robinson was also participating in tryouts for the Major Leagues at the recommendation of noted African-American sportswriter Wendell Smith. Smith played a large role in Robinson signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers and becoming the first African-American player in the Major Leagues.

And while Jackie Robinson will always be best known as a Brooklyn Dodger, for a brief moment he was one of Kansas City’s own.

Get ready to raise a glass, Kansas City. New juices, beers, wine and smoothies have all arrived. You can visit the recently opened KC Wineworks in the Crossroads to sample wine and cider made from Missouri grapes and apples or grab a juice or smoothie from Enjoy Pure Food + Drink in Mission Farms.

We’ve delved into Betty Rae’s, a new ice cream shop making it’s own waffle cones in Waldo, and taught you how to eat like you’re at Kauffman Stadium all the time (hint: it involves hot dogs). We’ve pitted carrot beer (yes, you read that right) and carrot juice against one another in a head-to-head new series that we’re calling Food Fight. We’re searching for the best seat in the house and pairing craft beer with roller food.

We’re taking a look at sandwiches layer-by-layer [see above] and we’ll keep seeking out combinations and flavors as unique and interesting as, well, carrot beer.
