Keep Inlay Lake greenand pleasant

Standing at an altitude of more than 2900feet, Inlay, a large lake in Nyaungshwe Township,Shan State (South), is a natural habitat for wildlife. The freshwater lake is a national heritage ofMyanmar, adding to the natural beauty of thesurrounding areas and attracting attention fromtourists around the world.

Among the creeks that empty into InlayLake, Namlat, Kalaw and Balu creeks contributelargely towards the natural ecology of the lake.Deforestation in the watershed areas andunsystematic farming are leading to soil depletionand silting up of the lake.

Now, related departments are takingmeasures for protecting Inlay Lake from siltingup, improvement of the natural ecology, andkeeping the lake green and pleasant. In addition, afforestation is under way in the watershedregions; mud and sand are being removed withdredgers; and the lake is being cleared of waterhyacinth, flotsam and duckweed.

In regenerating the barren areas, it is neededto choose perennial trees that like the climatepatterns of the region and generate cash.Encouragement is to be given to establishment ofprivate-run perennial crops farms. And allpossible types of assistance are to be rendered fortransforming slash and burn farming intohighland farming.

Accelerating the tasks for greening InlayLake and surrounding areas makes contributionto environmental conservation. Preservation ofnatural heritages helps improve the tourismindustry of the nation.

With many floating villages in it, InlayLake is a region where traditional industries andagriculture are successful. Inlay Lake and itssurrounding areas can be kept green and beautifulby choosing humus, organic fertilizers, weed killerand pesticides in agricultural farming, andconserving the watershed areas.

LOS ANGELES, 10 Aug—Dry pet food may be linked to humansalmonella outbreak, according to a new study by US researchers.

In that outbreak, 79 people were infected with the disease. Theinfections, half of which struck children, are the first known humansalmonella cases linked to dry dog and cat food, said the studyconducted by researchers at the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention (CDC).

According to the study, salmonella can jump from pet food tohumans mostly in the following two ways:

— Pets can shed salmonella in their feces for up to 12 weeks afterinfection, even if the dogs themselves don’t appear sick, and

— Children might have also played with the pet food and then puttheir hands or the food itself in their mouths.

The researchers recommend hand-washing after coming in contactwith pets or pet food. Pet food bowls and feeding areas should beregularly disinfected, Behravesh said, and food bowls should bewashed outside, not in sinks used for human hygiene or foodpreparation.—Internet

BARATARIA, 10 Aug —To assess how heavy ablow the BP oil spill hasdealt the Gulf of Mexico, researchers are closely

watching a staple of theseafood industry and pri-mary indicator of the eco-system’s health: the bluecrab. Weeks ago, beforeengineers pumped in mudand cement to plug thegusher, scientists beganfinding specks of oil incrab larvae plucked fromwaters across the Gulfcoast.

The government saidlast week that three-quar-ters of the spilled oil hasbeen removed or naturallydissipated from the water. But the crab larvae discov-

ery was an ominous signthat crude had already in-filtrated the Gulf’s vastfood web — and could af-fect it for years to come.

“It would suggest theoil has reached a positionwhere it can start movingup the food chain insteadof just hanging in the wa-ter,” said Bob Thomas, abiologist at Loyola Uni-versity in New Orleans.“Something likely will eatthose oiled larvae ... andthen that animal will beeaten by something biggerand so on.”—Internet
