    Celebrating Pentecost Sunday

    SAINT MICHAELS MISSION STATEMENT

Saint Michaels Catholic Community is a group of Catholic Christians associated with the Ar

Forces under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Archdioceses for the Military Serv

served by the pastoral leadership of our priest(s), deacon(s), and parish staff. The communi

dedicated to exemplifying Christian community by proclaiming the Good News of Jesus C

through worship, service, and witness to the people of Fort Gordon and surrounding communi

The season of Easter concludes with today's celebration, the feast of Pentecost. On Pentecost we celebrate thedescent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem; this event marks the begin-ning of the Church. The story of Pentecost is found in the Acts of the Apostles, today's first reading. The accountn today's Gospel, taken from the Gospel of John, also recounts how Jesus gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to his

disciples. There is no need to try to reconcile these two accounts to each other. It is enough to know that, after hisdeath, Jesus fulfilled his promise to send to his disciples a helper, an advocate, who would enable them to be hiswitnesses throughout the world.

We previously heard today's Gospel on the second Sunday of Easter. At that time, we also heard the passagehat follows, which describes Jesus' appearance to Thomas. In that context, we were led to reflect on belief and

unbelief. In the context of the feast of Pentecost, this reading reminds us about the integral connection between the gifts

of peace and forgiveness and the action of the Holy Spirit. Jesus greets his disciples with the gift of peace. Jesusthen commissions his disciples to continue the work that he has begun, As the Father has sent me, so I send you.As he breathes the Holy Spirit upon them, Jesus sends his disciples to continue his work of reconciliation throughhe forgiveness of sins.

This Gospel reminds us that the Church is called to be a reconciling presence in the world. This reconcilingpresence of Christ is celebrated in the Church's sacramental life. In the Sacrament of Baptism, we are washedclean from sin and become a new creation in Christ. In the Sacrament of Penance, the Church celebrates themercy of God in forgiving sins. This reconciling presence is also to be a way of life for Christians. In situations ofconflict, we are to be agents of peace and harmony among people.

Pastoral Visitationshere is simply no place more appropriate than the home for pastors to interactith their parishioners in a personal manner. And this holds true whether suchteraction is for the purpose of leading a person to Christ, reclaiming a lost

oul, or offering support and guidance. For this reason, our Pastor, Father Josephould like to start Pastoral Visitations to give parishioners the opportunity of

meeting and knowing him. He would like to visit parishioners homes twice a

eek, so if you are interested in receiving the special visit of our Pastor, pleaseontact the PLC Lola Rivera to schedule a Pastoral visitation @ (706) 791-4829,r [email protected]. Father Joseph is looking forward to visitour home, talk and pray with you and your family in earnestness and humility.

Writing Checks: When writing checks for our weekend collections, make sure you write the check to CTOF (Chapel Tithes and Of

Fund) Also remember , if you write a check $250 or above, you mafor a receipt from the chaplain assistant.
