Third Sunday of Advent

VOL. 3 DECEMBER 10-11, 2011 ISSUE

Welcome to Good Shepherd Chapel

Scripture

he has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the cap-

tives and release to the prisoners, (Isaiah 61:1))

He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty (Luke 1:53,54))

Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks,. (1 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

I baptize with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize, the one who is coming

after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.” (John 1:26,27)

Reflection

Why does Jesus enter the world? How does Jesus change the world through the actions of His followers?

How do you change the world a little bit at a time?

What parish ministry is making a difference in the lives it touches?

What encourages you and sustains you? What makes you happy?

Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, than falling in Love in a quite absolute, final, way. Whatyou are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will effect everything. It will decide what will get you out

of bed in the morning, what you will do with your evenings, how you will spend your weekends, what youread, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stayin love, and it will decide everything. 1

The Beatitudes: “Blessed are the Poor in Spirit” Blessings Come to those who are Broken and Humbled before God

The Beatitudes are a collection of promises recorded in the book of Matthew. They present seven different attitud

the heart that come with a promise of blessing. Jesus spoke these promises in His Sermon on the Mount, to a multof followers who needed more than just physical healing and deliverance. Jesus was giving them an opportunity to an intimate relationship with God through a right heart.

Each beatitude, which simply means supreme blessedness, begins with the phrase 'blessed are.' These words im

that whoever participates in that right heart attitude will benefit from being in a perpetual state of receiving Godvor. It was this continual blessing that Jesus knew was going to fulfill the needs of His followers. The first beatitufor the poor in spirit. Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

When Jesus spoke of the poor in spirit, He did not mean those who lack spirituality, or those who have limited stual resources. Nor was He talking about individuals who have a poor view of their spiritual state, as if they are simworthless and nothing but a throw-away. Rather, Jesus was speaking to those who have a balanced and positive hof humility, recognizing that they themselves have nothing to offer to God and are in great need of the incredible that they know He gives freely to those who ask. Yet they also do recognize that their own abilities are limited,

that they have to rely entirely on the sovereignty of God.This first attitude of the heart is one that lays the foundation for all the others that Jesus addressed. If one can

come to God with a heart of humility, they cannot benefit from God's promise of blessing; their self-pride hinders ability to receive. Only when God's people allow themselves to remain broken and humbled before God can He t

lift them up.Jesus emphasized the inheritance of the kingdom of heaven as a benefit for

those who are humble enough to admit their dependence on God. In truth, thisis the first step to salvation: acknowledging sin and the inability to self-save.

Without this kind of humility, salvation is not available. But those who come toGod poor in spirit will inherit every spiritual thing that God has for them. Writ-
