Problem:

The area behind Wharf 46 had concrete removed and needs to be excavated.

Due to the high water table, the contractor can remove the dirt, but can’t get it dry enough to work on it.

Soil must be able to support an HS20 truck

Solution:

Replace the concrete and drainage noting that this is a working terminal

Half will be taken out at a time Operations will use concrete A geotextile or geogrid that can support soil and loading

of this nature.

Option 1:A combination of Geotextile and GeogridRecommended Geotextile:

TenCate Mirafi® RSi Series

TenCate Mirafi® RSi Series Woven Geosynthetics are used for varying application needs including: base course reinforcement and subgrade stabilization for road, runway and railway construction; embankment stabilization on soft foundations; reinforcement for mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) structures; liner support, voids bridging, reinforcement over soft hazardous pond closures and other environmental market applications.

TenCate Mirafi® RSi-Series Woven Geosynthetics function for:•Separation•Filtration•Soil Reinforcement•Confinement•Drainage

Properties:

•Reinforcement Strength. Higher tensile modulus properties than any comparable stabilization product.

•Separation and Filtration. Unique double layer construction provides an excellent separation factor with superior filtration and drainage. Uniform openings provide consistent filtration and flow characteristics of a fine to coarse sand layer.

•Soil and Base Course Interaction. Superior soil and base course confinement resulting in greater load distribution.

•Durability. Robust damage resistance for moderate to severe stress installations.

•Seams. Panels can be seamed in the factory or field, providing cross-roll direction strength to facilitate efficient installation.

Recommended Geogrid:

TenCate Mirafi® BXG

TenCate Mirafi® BXG biaxial geogrids function for:

Confinement Soil Reinforcement

Properties

Excellent durability and long term performance Maximum bearing capacity and shear resistance Superior soil confinement Cross-roll direction strength when panels sewn together Quick installation

System Solutions:

Construction haul roads Foundation reinforcement Working platforms on weak sub-grades Secondary reinforcement for soil retaining structures

Option 1 Recommendation:

Utilize both Geogrid and Geotextile specified above.

Together they will provide both drainage and reinforcement.

*If only one is desired out of the two, then the Geotextile will be able to provide adequate results as well.

Option 2: Tensar Meeting Recommendation

A meeting was conducted with the region area Tensar Manager over this issue, and we studied various options in Tensar products to apply to this situation. The conclusion was the following:

Tensar Product TX5 Geogrid will be sufficient to address the loading.
