The unique ball, organised by retained fire- fighter Paul Hope (51), of Crowle, in memory of his wife Diane, raised £3,550 for an electronic bed for Ward 19 at Scunthorpe General Hos- pital. Paul said: “I’ve had so many phone calls and messages saying how absolutely fantastic it was and people asking to have their names put down for next year. “It was hard work but it was all worth it, so I’ve decided to make it an annual event.” The pink paradise saw Hirst Priory, on the Isle of Axholme, kitted out with pink and white balloons and all the 220 guests donned some form of pink clothing to celebrate. Paul said: “It was absolutely outstanding and later on people released balloons in memory of someone. There were a lot of people there who had been affected by cancer and it was an emotional evening at some points. “I got a bit of a shock because my daughter, Charlie, had said there would be someone playing the acoustic guitar and then it turned out she was singing – there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.” Diane died in November last year after a 10-year battle with breast cancer. At the ball a giant raffle saw many items, including Diane’s mountain bike and a signed Scunthorpe United shirt, sold off. The bike went for £210 and the shirt for £100. Paul said: “People just kept winning the prizes and then giving them back to be won again. “Diane would have loved it. She would have been in her element.” And he said he had a waiting list of 80 people who wanted to get tickets, but no more people could have been accommodated. He praised the caterers and organisers at the hall who all dressed up in pink tops and wore pink ties. And of the guests, Paul said: “I spoke to some men who had been all over Scunthorpe and Doncaster trying to get dickie bows and every- where had sold out.” At her funeral, Diane wanted all donations to be sent to Ward 19 at Scunthorpe General Hospital and Paul hosted the ball to raise more funds to help make other patients’ stays easier. Paul added: “We are looking at July again for the event for next year.” For further information on breast cancer, visit www.breastcancercare.org.uk By Christina Lloyd Chief reporter [email protected] ON SHOW: Above, from left: Liam Mcananey, Jodie Mcananey, Natalie Birkenshaw, Rachel Thompson, Sarah Harrison, Saoirse Read, Rachel Williams and Mary-Jane Hoyle.
