Benelux radio ratings emphasise stabilityHolland: Intomart ratings underline Radio l's sporting strength; Belgium: RadioScan confirms trends

    by Robbert Tilli

AMSTERDAM - Following severalmonths in which the top spot inHolland's official Intomart radio rat-ings has alternated between commer-cial station Sky Radio 100.7 FM andpublic broadcaster Radio 3FM, themarket shares of both stationsdropped slightly during June/July.

Soft AC outlet Sky dropped from14.2 percent in May/June to 13.8 per-cent in June/July, while in the sameperiod public CHR station 3FM's audi-ence share fell from 13.5 percent to13.2 percent.

It appears that -after a period ofvolatility -the Dutch radio markethas stabilised, with the main two com-

petitors constantly scoring around 13-14 in the bi-monthly Intomart figures.

Most stations only show smallchanges in audience share in the latestfigures. The exceptions are thelocal/regional broadcasters which haveincreased their market -leading sharefrom 15.6 percent to 16.2 percent, andpublic news/talk station Radio 1,which is up 1.0 percent to 8.3 percent.

Historically, Radio 1 puts on audienceevery summer thanks to live coverage ofthe hugely popular Tour de France cyclerace, a factor acknowledged by Radio 1station co-ordinator Karel van Hoof: "It'sindeed a yearly recurrent trend. Lastyear, in fact, we benefited not only fromthe Tour but also from the OlympicGames in Atlanta."

BRUSSELS - Latest ratings producedby Belgian radio's new RadioScan sys-tem confirm that the French-speakingsouth is led by two commercial net-works, while the Flemish-speakingnorth is dominated by public broad-caster BRTN.

Oslo's Radio 1 threatens legalaction in frequency disputeby Kai Roger Ottesen

OSLO - Radio Pluss, the Norwegiancommercial CHR station, has won gov-ernment support in its plea to remainon 102.0 FM, the Oslo frequency whichit currently shares with rival commer-cial CHR broadcaster Radio 1 Oslo.

Norway's ministry of culturehas backed the station's appeal tothe local radio authority, prompting legal moves fromRadio 1 Oslo.

Radio l's legal repre-sentatives are currentlyinvestigating the govern-ment's apparent decisionto overrule its own localradio authority on the matter.'e have hired some legal advis-ers to go through the ministry'sprocedures in this case, to see ifwe can find administrativeerrors," says Radio 1 pro-gramme director Lars Eikanger."Then we have to see if we need to file alawsuit against the ministry."

Berit Griebenow, a press spokes-person at the ministry of culture, has nofurther comment to make about the con-flict. "We have listened to the view-points of both stations, and have decid-ed that Radio Pluss should stay on 102FM," she says.

Last year, a coalition of 31 stations inOslo worked together to draw up a planwhereby each frequency, althoughshared by different broadcasting organ-isations, would broadcast a consistent

    FM102

programming format. This plan wasthen officially approved by the country'slocal radio authority, which is nowattempting to put it into practice.

Under the terms of the plan, Radio 1is to be the only station in Oslo with a

frequency all to itself (otherbroadcasters are being askedto share frequencies). Radio 1

currently shares 102FM with RadioPluss, Radio NiteRocket and Radio

OK, although it dom-inates the frequency

with its 05:00-20:00 weekdaytime -slot as well as some

weekend shows. Under theterms of the plan, it isproposed that RadioPluss should move to101.1 FM to help clear102 FM for the sole useof Radio 1.Radio Pluss was the

only station to file a complaint to thelocal radio authority against theagreed frequency plan, claiming thatthe switch would cause it "a substan-tial loss in advertising revenueand listenership."

Radio 1 programme director LarsEikanger notes: "[Radio Pluss] seesthe benefit of going on air after us andgetting more listeners than theywould get on 101.1 [FM]. As a result ofthis, the entire fragile house of cardsof moving the other stations will prob-ably fall apart."

  • Radio Eins returns to`roots of good radio'

    by Ed Meza

BERLIN-Radio Eins, Berlin's newestpublic FM station, has launched withsome familiar radio personalities andan eclectic format offering a playlistof more than 20,000 titles.

The station-which debuted onAugust 27-is the latest joint venturebetween public broadcasters Ostdeut-scher Rundfunk Brandenburg (ORB)and Sender Freies Berlin (SFB),whose partnership has already bornefruit in the shape of CHR station ORBFritz and the all -news Info Radio.

Radio Eins is to be followed inOctober by the launch of another jointproject, Radio Kultur (which will offera mix of classical, jazz and worldmusic) and an all -classical music sta-tion, Radio 3, which is being set up inconjunction with a third public broad-caster, Norddeutscher Rundfunk(NDR). Although the increasing num-ber of joint projects between ORB andSFB since German unification has ledto rumours of a merger of the twobroadcasters, officials at SFB say thereare "no current plans" in this respect.

With weekly programmes from thelikes of legendary alternative musicDJ John Peel-who is producing ashow in England exclusively for RadioEins-and Alan Bangs-who is host-ing the Rolling Stone Radio Show-Radio Eins is hoping to attract amature audience aged 25 -plus whichhas varied interests. In addition to itsunusually wide music policy of "40years of rock and pop," there also is anight-time talk show, and comprehen-sive news and sports coverage.

Although Radio Eins is playingmusic from the last four decades,Peter Radzuhn, the station's musicdirector, says its playlists are like"inverted pyramids," with more '90smusic at the top and a small mix of

'50s tracks at the bottom. "Our formatdefinitely reflects the current musicscene, but still offers great stuff fromthe past," he says. "We're not afraid toplay a song from Paul McCartney'snew album alongside something bySneaker Pimps, or Great Balls of Firefollowed by S.O.S. by Abba."

Some critics, however, are alreadyquestioning the wisdom of such awide-ranging output. Frank Jung-haenel, a media journalist for thedaily newspaper Berliner Zeitung, has been none too impressed withRadio Eins so far, describing it as "anill-defined compromise lackingcharm, character and, most impor-tantly, a solid format. Instead of thetechno-pop heard on many Berlin sta-tions, all Radio Eins is offering isirrelevant rockers like Elvis Costelloand Steve Winwood with some cur-rent Brit Pop for younger listeners."

    Radio Eins managing director

    Helmut

    Lehnert

Helmut Lehnert, who previouslyheaded SFB's Radio 4 U in the formerWest Berlin, and more recently ORBFritz, says Radio Eins is "simplygoing back to the roots of good radio,"and for him, that means variety.Lehnert is proud of his presenter line-up and says of Peel and Bangs:"These are people who made a namefor themselves when it was still possi-ble to be experimental on radio.Under pressure from commercialradio, stations have turned awayfrom these kinds of programmes. Nowit's time to bring them back."

Lehnert is hoping the full -serviceformat will win over listeners fromcompeting commercial radio stationssuch as Berliner Rundfunk, R.S.2 andRTL 104.6, which enjoy respectiveaudiences of 118,000, 154,000 and162,000. The first official ratings forRadio Eins will be available in sixmonths' time.

Green light for Spain's Radio Planby Howell Llewellyn

MADRID - Spain's Council of Ministershas finally given the go-ahead for 350new commercial radio licences on theFM band-the largest expansion ofradio in the country since 1989.

All the major networks are expect-ed to compete for as many of the newfrequencies as possible. The newlicences were formally offered for ten-der in the week beginning September8, after the Royal Decree authorisingthe Technical Radio Plan was pub-lished in an official state bulletin.

The government's approval of theplan had originally been expectedbefore the summer, but the delay has

given the big radio networks-CadenaSER (under its management title ofUnion Radio), Cadena COPE, OndaCero Radio, Cadena Iberica, andRadio Voz-extra time to prepare bidsfor a maximum number of licences.

A government statement said thatthe number of FM licences had dou-bled over the past eight years, "pro-ducing the phenomenon of networkconcentration that may have causedan imbalance in the coverage by thebig national networks...The new planintends to remedy this situation."

According to the statement, anoth-er aim of the plan is to create a "terri-torial balance" to correct the situationwhere some Spanish regions have a

higher density of stations than others. The new licences will be awarded by

Spain's 17 regional governments to thecommercial sector, as part of the cen-tre -right national government's aim toredress what it sees as the presentimbalance in favour of public radio.

    The 350 licences will be distrib-uted among the regions as follows:Andalucia 26; Aragon 32; Asturias 11;Balearic Islands 9; Canary Islands46; Cantabria 10; Castilla -La Mancha17; Castilla y Leon 52; Catalunya 22;Ceuta 1; Extremadura 9; Galicia 46;Madrid 25; Melilla 1; Murcia 12;Navarre 8; Rioja 8; and Valencia 15.The Basque Country did not requestany new licences.

Europe's 'youth'stations aim tobuild bridgesby Emmanuel Legrand

PARIS - Youth -oriented Europeanradio stations are set to explore ways ofsharing programming and resources ata meeting in Paris later this month.

The two day meeting, on September25-26, is at the invitation of Frenchpublic broadcaster Radio France andSpain's largest commercial broadcasterSER. The event is being held under theaegis of the European BroadcastingUnion (EBU).

Executives from the followingyouth -orientated stations are expect-ed to attend the meeting: YLE RadioMaffia (Finland); SER Los 40Principales (Spain); RDP Antenne 3(Portugal); Polskie Radio (Poland);BBC Radio 1 (U.K.); Le Mouv'(France); RTBF Radio 21 (Belgium);RSR Couleur 3 (Switzerland); WDREins Live (Germany), SWF3(Germany) and RTE 2FM (Ireland). All but Los 40 Principales are pub-licly -owned stations.

Marc Garcia, director of music forRadio France's France Inter and LeMouv', says the EBU has a "dustyimage for most of these stations,"and that the facilities provided bythe EBU "have not been fully exploit-ed," mostly because stations don'tknow how to use them.

Adds Garcia: "We started to haveregular meetings under the Eurorockbanner within the EBU, and we dis-covered that we had much in com-mon. We realised that we had at thetips of our fingers a network of sta-tions with an incredible potential, but that has not been activated."

Garcia says the plans are to inten-sify exchanges between the stations."We could share concerts, set up jointprojects, create events allowing, forexample, stations to broadcast livefrom raves from Liverpool, Berlinand Ibiza simultaneously. The poten-tial is enormous."

  • M PAD' FEAMGolden oldies lose their glitter as radiostations widen the generation gapby Paul Sexton

Commercial radio in the U.K. has endured years of crit-icism from record companies that its conservative, research -bound music programming gives guaranteedairplay to the "old faithfuls" of rock and pop-actssuch as Genesis, Phil Collins, Elton John-at theexpense of newer artists who could be broken morereadily with the support of radio. However, there aresigns that this is changing in the U.K. Is the "oldguard" having a rougher time on radio in the U.K., andis the change reflected across Europe?

Teenage R&B starlet Aaliyahopined on record a couple ofyears ago that Age Ain'tNothin' But A Number. Easyfor you to say, some U.K. radio

pluggers might retort, as they try toconvince heads of music that theirmore mature acts still merit airplay.

The great shift away from "Gold"formatted commercial radio stations inthe U.K. over the past few years mayhave heralded a broader cultural shiftin musical tastes. Not only are the"golden oldies" tracks from the '60sand '70s less evident on the airwaves, but the still -active maturer acts-suchas Elton John, Phil Collins, PaulMcCartney-who were "core artists"for much of mainstream commercialradio throughout the country, arereportedly having a leaner time atradio with their new releases.

The British music scene is widelyheld to be among the most fashion -ledin the world. In such an environment, veteran artists are having an increas-ingly tough time commanding the air-space that once seemed theirs byright. So fast has the turnover of newacts become that "veteran" can some-times mean any artist on their secondalbum-so for artists with 30 years or

more of recording under their belt, the climate can be cool, if not down-right frosty.

Tony Barker, London -based direc-tor of promotions at Virgin Records, gives a direct answer to the questionof whether ageism exists among pro-grammers. "Without a doubt," hesays, "and it's a real worry. It's fair tosay that with the more mature acts,it's difficult to find a slot, or even asingle radio station, that caters forthem. They're judged not necessarilyon the quality of their music, but onthe perception of the act."

Knock -on effect at the tillsData in the recently -published fifthU.K. Record Industry Annual Surveysuggests that radio's less favourableattitude to mature acts is being felt atretail. The report revealed that onlyone quarter of the Top 50 best-sellingalbums in the U.K. last year were byartists whose initial success camemore than five years ago; in 1993,older acts accounted for two thirds ofthat year's Top 50.

One of Virgin's current prioritiesis Calling All Stations, the newalbum by Genesis, a group only a fewmonths away from their 30th

anniversary as a record-ing entity. The Britishradio environment of 1997is a world away from theone that prevailed at thetime of the group's laststudio release, 1991's WeCan't Dance.

While ILR (indepen-dent local radio) playlistshave become ever morefinely -tuned and carefullyresearched, the nation'smost widely -heard non-commercial rock and popalternative, BBC Radio 1,has openly targetedyounger audiences and amore cutting -edge sound.Approaching Radio 1 forairplay on the newGenesis single Congo,Virgin found, to no -one'sgreat surprise, that thelocks have all beenchanged, and the band's

older -demographic rock sound is nolonger welcome.

A recent "dipstick" survey of cur-rent favourites on London's pop, rockand AC stations showed broadcastersadhering strongly to their on -airimage, with few openings for newmaterial by long -running acts. At thesame moment at lunchtime onSeptember 8, Radio 1 was playingFun Lovin' Criminals, BBC Radio 2 aDon McLean oldie, BBC GLR airedScandinavian singer Stina Norden-stam, Capital FM favoured the new MPeople, Kiss 100 had a Mary J. Bligeoldie, Xfm was playing U.S. band TheCreation, Virgin featured SimpleMinds, and Melody and Heart wentfor AC hits by Simply Red and BillWithers respectively.

Fresh hope for old facesBut for the promotions chiefs in theU.K., faced with often unspoken indif-ference to their million -sellers of yes-teryear, there are a few chinks oflight. As Barker points out, thenational commercial rock outletVirgin Radio now stands as "the clos-est to any station that will play theseacts," while BBC Radio 2 has, in thepast two years, made remarkablestrides to embrace music and artiststhat were once the domain of its"younger brother," Radio 1.

"A lot of the audience which hascome to us are well aware of theseartists," says Radio 2 senior producerColin Martin. "They're quite happy tomaintain their loyalties to them andwe're quite happy to do that when [thoseartists] create music we can play."

Thus, Genesis now find them-selves on the Radio 2 playlist-butnot with [latest single] Congo. Rather

the station has playlistedShipwrecked, a softer, ballad trackfrom Calling All Stations. "Congowasn't really something we felt ourlisteners would be particularly atease with," says Martin. "ButShipwrecked is a really good, accessi-ble record, it has that Mike & theMechanics, soft rock -type feel, and Ithink the broad base of our audiencewill be much more happy with it."

Barker says that the rare opportu-nity to have a station playlist analbum track is not to be sneezed at."Usually it's single or bust, so that'sgood," he observes. Indeed, thenational airplay for Shipwrecked canonly have made the Radio 2 audiencemore aware of the release of theGenesis album, which had arespectably strong first week at retailin the U.K.

Big in SpainFurther south, the situation in Spainhas points of comparison and contrastwith the U.K. Maturer British actsappear to be selling as well as ever, and the native Spanish acts of thesame older generation, consistinglargely of singer/songwriters, are alsostill doing well. One of them, AnaBelen, recently spent a couple ofweeks at number 1 with Mtrame(Look At Me), and by the beginning ofSeptember had gone double platinum(200,000 -plus) after 18 weeks in theTop 10. The lack of a Spanish "gener-ational renewal" on the scale of theU.K.'s Britpop phenomenon alsoappears to have maintained focus onolder acts.

Rafael Revert, director of CadenaCOPE's rock-CHR Cadena 100 radiostation says: "If only we did have the

    MUSIC & MEDIA 0 SEPTEMBER 20, 1997AmericanRadioHistory.Com

  • RADIO FEATUREsame tendency in Spain as in theU.K.! The likes of Julio Iglesias,Frank Sinatra or Phil Collins are stillbig here in sales and airplay, one rea-son being that radio in general doesn'tdo enough to encourage new artists.

"Also, the U.K. is lucky to have astrong singles market, which Spaindoes not have, so that young artistsare continually replenishing thecharts. My audience is mainly above20 years old, so it is not such a press-ing problem for me."

Luis Merino, director of music for-mulas at Cadena SER's five music net-works, which include four of the fivemost popular in Spain, says many ofSpain's big artists of the early '70s notonly retain a stable public, but have astrong following among teenagers.

"Pop -rock groups as such did notreally happen [in Spain] until the'80s, and now it is they who have fall-en by the wayside while thesinger/songwriters remain eternal,"he says. "In the last 10 years, labelshave not been interested in creatingnew pop -rock bands, just in market-ing and promotion. The U.K veteransalso do well-Spain was the onlyother country apart from the UKwhere McCartney's Flaming Piereached number two."

Simone Bose, PolyGram Spain'sinternational product manager, addsthat as long as there is nothing newon the Spanish pop -rock horizon, bothSpanish and UK veterans will contin-ue to sell well. "We're still waiting,"says Bose, "for Spain's own version ofthe Britpop renovation."

Claudio Conde, president of SonyMusic Entertainment Spain, arguesthat pop has never really existed inSpain, which is why the veteransremain strong. "Anyway, the Britishold-timers are geniuses-you're talk-ing about people who have helped todefine pop music. Of course they'regoing to sell if nothing new comesalong in Spain."

Although the same air of reverencefor British old-timers may not be soevident in U.K. radio, Chris Straw, head of music at CHR station Hallam

FM/Sheffield, says that an openlyageist programming policy is "not myexperience" at the EMAP-owned sta-tion. "We don't look at things so muchin terms of age," notes Straw. "Weleapt on the new Genesis single veryearly. With someone like Phil Collins, perhaps radio stations have moved onand his style of music is not quitecompatible any more."

In terms of longevity, VirginRecords is also working new materialby the grandaddies of them all-thegroup which, several musical genera-tions ago, sang Time Is On My Side.

The Rolling Stones' newsingle Anybody Seen MyBaby?, released onSeptember 22, went toradio in the U.K. onSeptember 4.

Shortly ahead of hear-ing it, Hallam's Strawstressed the station'sopen-mindedness to agroup which has beenrecording for 35 years.

    The Rolling Stones

"We're prepared to look at a newStones record as if it was a new Oasisrecord," he says.

There was also qualified good newsfor the Stones from Radio 1 where, although the single was not playlist-ed, it is receiving airplay. Additions tothat playlist consist primarily of cut-ting -edge indie and dance acts as wellas current pop heavyweights, but thelist makes up only about 60 percent ofthe Radio 1 output.

Cliff crazy DenmarkLooking north to Scandinavia, thefate of older artists on radio inDenmark seems to be a case of pick -and -choose according to popularmusical tastes: some acts get auto-matic airplay while others don't.

Sony has had some problems withBilly Joel's cover of Bob Dylan's ToMake You Feel My Love, a single fromJoel's recent greatest hits album. "It'sdecidedly a Dylan song and radio sta-tions don't really want to accept it. Wehaven't had much response," says

"We don't actually lookat age. If they make theright record, we'll play it,simple as that. We don'thave to maintain animage for our listeners."

    - Cohn Martin, senior producer BBC Radio 2

Sara Madsen from Sony radio promo-tion. "Dylan is an older artist, andthere is a predominance of hit radiostations which want up -tempo tracks,as new as possible."

While Joel may have problems, other veterans get airplay. "EspeciallyJoe Cocker, Tina Turner, CliffRichard, well established artists,"says Danny Fobian, head of music atThe Wave in Elsinore, north ofCopenhagen. "We're very aware of thenewer music for the 25 -plus audienceof our AOR format. And in the pastfive years radio has changed inDenmark. There's more powerfulwattage to broadcast and more moneyin it, so stations are more focused onthe target groups.

"It is interesting to note," addsFobian, "that Cliff Richard continuesto be a star much in demand inDenmark. His records sell and hisshows usually sell out. I just readsome complaints recently that Cliff isnot played enough, and that hisnewest record is not getting enoughairplay in Denmark."

Hanging on to the pastOn the other side of the country KentHansen, head of music at HitradioABC, concurs partly with Fobian."The Danish market generally wantsto hang on to the past, so a lot ofoldies get played," he says. Newrecordings by established artists mayhave a tougher time.

For example, Peter Cetera's newalbum release-remakes of Chicagotracks and some new music-is strug-gling to get airplay. "He can't shakethe past, and Chicago's a closed book,"says Hansen. "I think the longer acareer pause, the more difficult itbecomes [to break back into radio],and things now move so fast it some-times sounds as if they're trying tobreathe life into an act."

But CMC Records has had immensesuccess in Denmark with older artists.Latest and greatest albums by suchartists as Dr. Hook, John Denver, SuzyQuatro, Steppenwolf, Kenny Rogershave achieved excellent sales, althoughairplay has mainly been restricted toAC stations. Radio stations playremakes when they are true to the orig-inals, but it can be more difficult toplaylist re -recordings if they stray toofar from the original.

"AC stations with a broader formatare generally good about playing olderartists," says Flemming Poulsen, CMCradio promotion manager.

Looking to the future in the U.K,Virgin Records' rony Barker takessome comfort from the fact that the 21bids for the second regional FM licencein the north west of England includeseveral from applicants targeting amature audience.

Meanwhile, many U.K promotionsexecutives will no doubt be wishing thatRadio 2's programming policy reflecteda more widespread approach. "We don'tactually look at age," says Colin Martin."If they make the right record, we'llplay it, simple as that. We don't have tomaintain an image for our listeners."Additional reporting by Charles Ferroin Denmark and Howell Llewellyn inSpain

Asia's Danish rockstars target Europeby Sally Stratton

Three years ago the Danish hit sensationmaking European headlines was calledWhigfield. This year it's Aqua.

Outside the headlines, another Danish act,Michael Learns To Rock, has been boostingthe country's export figures for more than fiveyears with worldwide album sales approach-ing six million.

The EMI Medley -signed band first toppedthe Danish charts in 1992 with their self -titled debut album and the single The Actor. Some success followed in the rest ofScandinavia, Switzerland, Italy andGermany, but Michael Learns To Rock havehad only minor impact in Europe, comparedto south east Asia where multi -platinum saleshave made them superstars.

"We have been asked many times why weare big in Asia," says singer and principalsongwriter Jascha Richter, "and I think it'smaybe something to do with the language. Wedon't use complicated words because we don'tknow complicated words in English."

The Arhus -based quartet is also very popu-lar in the Middle East, in India-where theywere the first western band to play inBangalore and Madras-and more recently inSouth Africa. "Everywhere we go we have avery wide range of ages in our audience,"observes Richter. "We feel like we are a bandfor the whole family."

With the release of their fourth studio albumNothing To Lose on September 22, there arenow plans to boost the band's career in Europe.

"EMI is taking us very seriously nowbecause of the huge sales in Asia," saysRichter. "That will help a lot and, besides, Ithink the songs are better, the production isbetter and the mixing is better so we have abetter chance with this album." Incidentally, the man behind the mix is fellow Dane MadsNilsson, who mixed U.K. soul artist MarkMorrison's smash hit Return Of The Mack.

    "We're among the 10 best-selling acts in

Denmark, our previous album sold doubleplatinum so we feel very well accepted athome," says Richter. A European promotionaltour at the end of September-including a fullweek in Germany-is intended to build onexisting support before the band return toAsia in mid -October.

"We've had a pretty weird career," admitsRichter. "We just heard that we have a num-ber one album in South Africa with a GreatestHits compilation, but we actually never had ahit in South Africa before!"

The first European single from the albumis the ballad Paint My Love, which went tonumber one in several Asian countries on itsrelease last autumn-thanks in part to a con-troversial video featuring a body -paintedwoman. EMI Medley director, international,Thomas Hoehne notes that Paint My Love

was played extensively on the region'sChannel V which "power -rotated the videofrom the very beginning and was crucial totheir success over there." The song gave itsname to the aforementioned Greatest Hitsalbum which was released only in south eastAsia, Japan, India and South Africa but hasalready sold more than 2.5 million units.

Hoehne readily confirms that MichaelLearns To Rock are a very lucrative act becausethe Asian market is so much bigger thanEurope. "These are huge territories," heexplains. "The only disadvantage is that manypeople in the Asian territories buy cassetteswhich have a lower dealer price than CDs.However, in Taiwan, Korea and Hong KongCDs account for 90 percent of [our] sales so theyare really attractive markets. Also the [CD]prices are relatively high, compared to Europe."

The band's appreciation of fan loyalty hasalso played a major part in their rise to star-dom, according to Hoehne. "The huge statusthey have in south east Asia has not happenedaccidentally," he says. "They've done morethan 30 promo trips to Asian territories in thecourse of the last three albums. They'veworked hard for their success."

EMI Records U.K. andIreland has announcedplans to target theblack music and dancemarkets at the thirdannual EMI U.K.Artists & Music conference held in Londonfrom September 3-5.

Parlophone-the home of Supergrass andMansun-is ready to tap into new marketswith soon -to -be -launched imprint ParlophoneRhythm Series and a host of new signings.Parlophone managing director TonyWadsworth told the conference: "We areknown for alternative rock. Now we willbroaden Parlophone's roster in two areas, namely alternative dance and R&B."

The label aims to service the U.K. R&Bmarket with its brand new ParlophoneRhythm Series, an outlet dedicated to U.K.and European talent. In the alternative dancesector, Parlophone is banking on maverickDJs Rich March and Mike Stokes, a.k.a.Bentley Rhythm Ace, who join the Parlophonestable from independent Skint.

Parlophone A&R director Keith Wozencroftrevealed the first five signings of the RhythmSeries: Beverley Knight, Bizzi, RichardAnthony Davis, Charlotte Kelly and Swedishartist Steven Simmonds. Wozencroft said: "We

built the label over the past 18months and aim to have thefirst releases out by February1998." He identified Knight asthe label's top priority act andsays it hopes "to establishBeverley as the U.K.'s primeR&B artist."

Chrysalis A&R directorGordon Biggins announced thelaunch of a progressive danceimprint called Autonomy. The

label's first signings are Manchester DJ WaiWan and London -based duo PhiladelphiaBluntz, previously with China Records. TheBluntz' first single for Autonomy, a trackcalled Sister, Sister, is pencilled in for aNovember release. Biggins emphasised Auto-nomy's aim "is to develop album artists" andadded that the debut albums of Wai Wan andPhiladelphia Bluntz for the label are sched-uled for release in January 1998.

Biggins also has high hopes for new Chryslissigning Radiator. The east London trio com-bines heavy guitar riffs with dance beats butleans more towards rock than comparable actslike the Chemical Brothers or The Prodigy.

EMI U.K.'s new commitment to dance andblack music was underscored with live perfor-mances by Bentley Rhythm Ace, Radiator,Beverley Knight and Bizzi on the stage of theShepherd's Bush Empire during the confer-ence. The new generation of artists joined aline-up of already established EMI recordingstars like Paul McCartney, Robbie Williamsand Neil Finn of Crowded House.

Sylvia Powell writes her own futureby Christian Lorenz

A powerful singer and a refreshingly originalsongwriter, Nigerian born and British raisedSylvia Powell has London's music dons prick-ing up their ears for her debut album Revue ondeConstruction, which is due on October 13.

In Powell's music you can hear a bit ofR&B, a bit of reggae and a dash of jazz. Whereother talented singers deliver pale, coffee-table music due to the weakness of their mate-rial, Powell comes out a winner thanks to hersongwriting skills. And her independencefrom established`helpers' makes these Sylvia Powellsongs sound differentfrom anythingaround at present.

"Music is like asecond language tome," she says. "I havebeen writing poetryfor a long time, then Idiscovered singingand finally I got intowriting songs." Whenshe was 15 sheentered a studio forthe first time torecord one of hersongs. "I didn't havethe nerve to mail it to a recordcompany," admits Powell. "I justplayed it to some friends."

After finishing a politicsdegree, Powell worked during the week in adesigner clothes shop, and would "blow the

money on studio time over the weekend torecord demos of my songs." Some of thesedemos won her a publishing deal at BMGMusic Publishing two years ago. "MikeSefton-who signed me for BMG-alerteddeConstruction managing director KeithBlackhurst and I had a recording deal somesix months later," recalls Powell. These 1995demos-only slightly polished-now form thebasis for Revue.

Powell has not stopped writing since. "Atthe moment I've got enough songs for threealbums," she says. "I write a lot, but I'm not

the type who gets up in themorning with the plan towrite a certain number ofsongs. If I get into the moodI can write anywhere."

Has she ever consideredwriting for other artists? "Ihave got surplus songsthat I'm not going to use,"says Powell. "And I intendto sit down with my pub-lishers to think about wayshow to make the best use ofthis material."

As a next step, Powellaims to improve her perfor-mance skills. "It's an art initself to perform on stage,"

she sighs. "Maybe in 18months or so I can take myact on the road," she says.

Check out Powell's debutsingle Butterfly-to be released on September29-for a first glimpse of an unusual talent.

BENJAMIN HERMANCAFE ALTOProducer: Benjamin HermanThe New York trained Dutch sax player may be involved innumerous jazz/funk crossover projects including New CoolCollective and Candy Dulfer, but this solo album offers clas-sic jazz. Herman seems to be part of that young generationof jazzmen like Nicholas Payton and James Carter who arereaching back for the days in which the genre was shaped. IfPayton and Carter are inspired by the New Orleans era, then Herman departs from the post-war heyday of bebop. His playful album features work by Monk, Mengelberg, hisown composition One O'Clock Dump and the Jungle Booktrack I Wanna Be Like You.

AD COLEN QUARTETNAKEDProducer: Ad ColenThe quartet features pianist Michiel Borstlap who hasdeveloped into one of Holland's most notable jazz exports. The other members are Erik Robaard on double bass andChris Strik on drums. However, this coherent album is verymuch under the control of tenor and soprano saxophonistColen himself. He has a highly sensitive feeling for moodsand atmospheres. The nine self -composed tracks sway fromlaid-back to agitated tempo changes without ever losing thattypical Colen touch, which has its roots in mellow WestCoast cool jazz.

MIJKE LOEVEN BANDTwoProducers: Mijke Loeven Band, Tjeerd van ZanenThe jazz scene is never short of female vocalists, but Loeven has established herself as a distinctivesinger/songwriter in the genre. Her earthy vocalsand phrasing are slightly reminiscent of JoniMitchell and Carly Simon. Her band adds thejazzy touch to Loeven's tunes. The combination works verywell and Loeven dispenses with the cocktail dress clichés ofthe girl singer in the jazz club circuit and takes a moreassertive stand. All released on VIA Jazz (Holland) and available forlicensing and distribution outside the Benelux andGermany. DOUG CAMERONPASSPORTProducer: Doug CameronViolinist Cameron works part-time as a cruise -ship enter-tainer and decided to write down his impressions of some ofhis worldwide trips. Passport features guests such as JoeSample on piano and Yellowjackets' Russell Ferrante on key-boards. Cameron's pleasant instrumentals are brightenedup by the ethnic couleur locale provided on Masai Mara andOld San Juan.

TIM TIMMERMANSSEVEN BRIDGESProducers: Mait Marshall, Dan SeleneProducer, composer and multi -instrumentalistTimmermans is the co-founder of smooth jazz groupWindows. He is expanding his horizons further on SevenBridges, his third solo album. Based on mellow jazzgrooves, his instrumental compositions take on differentdimensions as they are flavoured with Celtic melodiesand New Age spirituality. All released on Higher Octave Jazz (USA).
