Minutes Of the 141st AGM held 7th
December 2010
Moved that the minutes of the 141stth AGM be adopted Moved Scott Fuller/George Gallagher-carried
Matters Arising out of those minutes
Subject to the following amendment under General Business page 7 which should read “that the
Foundation has agreed to take over ownership, management, stewardship and cataloguing of the Club’s
Memorabilia etc”.
Chairman’s Address
Jason précised his comments in the report noting the Club had a reasonable season on the playing side,
regrettably, although our senior 2nd side again won the HD Morgan Trophy. Losses in the earlier round
meant we again failed to gain promotion. Special mention to the under 21’s who made it through to the
semi finals.
Special thanks to all committee members and those involved in the administration, coaching, etc, in both
our senior and junior club. Special comment and thanks to the bar staff. Jason noted the Secretary has
indicated, due to changing circumstances, he will not be standing for re-election after nine years on the
committee. Treasurer Ian Cragg has also advised due to business commitments he is unable to fulfill the
treasurer’s role next year but will be available to assist.
Accounts
Treasurer Ian Cragg presented the accounts and spoke to the meeting re same.
Main Points -
• Income not being matched by expenditure
• Repairs and maintenance continue to be a big drain on Funds. This coupled with a sharp decline in bar
takings has not assisted our bottom line.
• Insurance increases continue to be a major concern
• Club is basically insolvent, urgent need for a major injection of funds.
• From a financial sense the actual ongoing viability and future of the Club is at stake. If things continue as
is the Club will not be in a position to continue from a financial perspective.
General discussion resulted -
• Barry Nichols queried the amount noted of $19304 for outside coaching. Treasurer explained this was
for Clubs attendance at IRANZs, amount covered by a grant.
• Query from the John Conway re Club Insurance as it relates to the Memorabilia. Advised by the
Treasurer that items covered under general insurance, and also noted that due to our grave finances the
committee had elected to forego earthquake cover.
• General discussion followed re value of some of unique items held.
• Nigel Hughes commented that the Foundation will have to now look at arranging safer storage in the
future.
Moved that the 142nd Financial Statement be adopted. Nigel Hughes/ Ross Graham-carried
Passed by general acclamation. Roy Cowley asked that a vote of thanks be recorded for Treasurer Ian Cragg

Club future and current financial situation
Murray Mexted gave a passionate address re his view on our current situation.
Main Points -
• Recommended a recruitment drive be undertaken with a mail drop in our catchments area.
• Lower fees to be set for new members.
• Greater integration between the Senior and Junior Club
• Group coming through from the under 21’s will now be in their third year and important they take on a
greater role.
• Club need to reintroduce a Women’s side.
• Culture needs to be changed to encourage all members to utilise the club’s facilities, bar, etc.
• Vigorous discussion resulted re the future of the club, and shortfall of funds ($20k urgently required).
• Scott Fuller indicated the Committee was currently in the process of approaching our sponsors with a
scheme to produce some sponsorship money immediately, to cover our shortfall with a full back
position of raising debentures.
• Francie noted the committee had already formed a smaller group to look at ways of making better
utilization of our facilities this included among other things pursuing the Sportsville Model.
• President Ross Graham felt that we had another 12 months to right the ship and the future of the Club
revolved around Murray’s under 21 group coming through.
• Chairman Jason Judd thanked Murray and indicated the committee will take onboard his thoughts and
other suggestions from the floor.
• Now is not the time to throw in the towel.
Meeting closed 7.30pm
PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Ross Graham
Greetings to all members and supporters
I would like to express my thanks to the Club for the confidence it had in re-appointing me President for
2012. I am very conscious of our history and tradition and of the need to uphold the high standards set by
my predecessors.
2012 shaped up as a crucial year for the Club. We needed to win promotion to Senior First division to
ensure a pipeline for our emerging players and we needed to develop a pool of talented young players,
building the Club from the bottom up. We have been successful on both counts. In addition, our finances
are in better shape and the bar and kitchen facilities have improved. There is a real buzz around the club
rooms. Our rise has been noted and applauded by the media and the broader rugby community.
I would like to acknowledge Murray Mexted for his outstanding leadership, his skills as a coach and mentor
and his passion for the WFC.
It was a stellar year for our senior team. After comfortably winning the Senior Second division and the H.D.
Morgan Memorial Trophy, promotion to Senior First represented a step up in terms of skill and intensity.
Our boys were more than up for the challenge and emerged as worthy winners of the Ed Chaney Cup, after
a hard fought win over Paremata-Plimmerton. The team dedicated their win to inspirational Axeman Dean
Gifford, who had lost his battle with cancer a couple of days earlier. The team's fitness, determination and
passion shone through week after week. Congratulations to the coaching and management team of the
seniors - Hohepa Tawhara (JT), Evan Hopkin, Richard Deck, Mo Mackey and Duncan Domett - they and the
players have done us proud.
The Colts also enjoyed a wonderful season, securing the Tank Paris Trophy in winning the first round of this
very prestigious grade and narrowly losing the championship final to a very talented OBU team.
Congratulations to Chris Kennedy, Ross Curd and Steve Mann for guiding and inspiring these young men.
The Reserves and Pressies also had successful seasons, playing attractive and positive rugby - these guys
certainly know how to enjoy themselves.
I want to acknowledge Scott and Tom Fuller for their creativity and energy in producing the weekly match
reports and regular editions of The Axe. Also Bruce Moore, Chris Kennedy, Jason Judd and others for the
detailed match reports.
Special thanks to the Club's Management Committee, under the capable leadership of Chair Jason Judd, for
their work generating funding and sponsorship, streamlining operations in the bar and kitchen and
providing a quality training, playing and social environment. Everyone has contributed but special mention
must be made of Nigel Hughes, Francie Russell, Scott Fuller and Duncan Domett.
The Club continues to face funding challenges but real progress has been made in growing our income and
managing our expenditure. Special thanks to those who continue to support us financially, including our
sponsors and individual benefactors.
The Junior Club, with 200 players, is in great heart. Congratulations to Jonathan Bacon and his committee,
coaches and managers for ensuring our youngsters enjoy all that rugby has to offer.
The WFC Foundation Trust organised the traditional Old Timers Day luncheon in May. An encouraging
number of supporters attended, together with senior representatives of the WRFU, and stayed on to watch
both the Colts and Seniors win their respective matches. The Trust continues to coordinate an audit of the
Club's memorabilia, to ensure the preservation of our heritage.
I would like to acknowledge our Patron, Ian McCarrison, for his long-standing and pro-active interest in the
welfare of the Club.
Congratulations go to Nigel Hughes on being elected a Life Member of the WRFU at its AGM in March. This
honour is richly deserved - Nigel continues to be an outstanding servant of the WRFU, the Centurions RFC
and especially our own club. He joins fellow Axemen Jack Oldershaw and Graham Williams in this
illustrious group.
A big thank you to the WRFU, Wellington City Council and the Wellington Rugby Referees Association for
their on-going support.
Planning has commenced for 2013, with the aim of getting the Senior Firsts promoted to Premier rugby.
Key coaches, managers and administrators have agreed to stay on and others have indicated they would
like to be actively involved. The Axemen Academy will drive player recruitment, team compositions,
summer training, off-season competitions as well as player and coaches scholarships, to ensure all teams
hit the new season fully fit and ready to compete.
I believe that when the history of the Club is updated for the 150th celebrations in 2020, the current
period will be acknowledged as when we began our journey back to the Premier Division and recognition
once again as one of the great New Zealand rugby clubs.
Thank you to all who have contributed to our rise this year. I hope you have an enjoyable and relaxing off-
season and look forward to seeing you at Hataitai Park in 2013.
Give 'em the Axe.
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT – Jason Judd
Well, another season has passed on the field and it would have to rate as one of the most successful for the
Axemen in a number of years. The junior club has again provided a wonderful nursery for future Axemen,
the Pressies keep doing what they do, the Reserves got better and better as the season progressed, the
Colts cleaned up the first round and narrowly missed out on the double by losing the final and the Senior
1st's capped off an exceptional year by winning the Ed Chaney Cup as the best Senior 1st side in Wellington
and gaining promotion to the Senior One grade for 2013. The final was a pulsating affair and came down to
the last kick of the game, which was missed leaving our guys with a well deserved win. Before and after the
game there was special mention of Dean Gifford, who, as mentioned earlier, had sadly passed away a
couple of days before the final - the mantra of "do it for Dean" was mentioned several times and is seemed
appropriate that we were able to recognise this great man in an appropriate manner. The win gives us the
opportunity to push on for Premier honours in 2014 and is something all involved with the club should be
proud of.
Off the field, there are too many people to mention individually and this made the selection of winners at
Prizegiving all the harder. We have had a tremendous amount of time, passion and effort provided to the
club from many people and can I please pass on my thanks and regards to all who have contributed in
whatever capacity. Volunteer based organizations, like us, only survive on the hard work of those prepared
to do it and we have been very fortunate indeed in this regard. In my Prizegiving spiel I stole a line from JFK
and asked those there to commit to "ask not what your club can do for you, but what you can do for your
club" and this is something I think we will promote more in coming years. Our club isn't just about what
some individuals can get out of it, it’s about what we collectively can put in and then share the rewards and
success that this brings!
Finally, I hope all those who have followed the clubs success over the year stay in touch and we look
forward to sharing even greater success and stories next year. Planning is already underway to deliver the
infrastructure and resources we need to make 2013 as successful as we intend it to be.
Give 'em the Axe
CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Murray Gifford / Peter Jack
The winning back of Senior 1st status in our 142nd consecutive season was my top highlight of the season.
The effort of Murray Mexted and his coaches and managers was a step in fulfilling the dying wish of the late
Bill Brien and Murray’s aim of doing so within three years. It also brings back the history of the club in
1930, when the then top side was also relegated down to Senior 2 grade. The Club fielded five All Blacks in
that side the following season, which included Frank Kilby, Lance Johnson, Don Oliver, Hugh Mclean and JR
Page. The team scored 495 points with 17 against, won the playoff games and went up in the 1932 season.
The club fielded only 4 teams this year, possibly the lowest this club has ever had. However the result we
got from these teams showed that quality rather than quantity ruled the day. This was recognized when
we were recently presented at the Annual Tui Awards, the "Sir William Perry Memorial Trophy" for the club
with the highest average of championship points per team.
In terms of winning trophies this was the most successful season for over three decades. For the top side it
included WRFU trophies the Ed Chaney Cup and the National Mutual Cup. The Inter-club Trophies included
the Spud Lindsay Cup (Poneke), Albie Jack Cup (Ories), Air N.Z Trophy (Petone), Mick Kenny Cup
(Johnsonville) and the Mexted Cup (Tawa). The Colts side won the Tank Paris Cup for winning their first
round from the WRFU, named after a top clubman and coach for our Club and Ories. Again our President’s
team won the Rob Goulden Axe against Ories. So as you can see our trophy cabinet of silverware is full and
looks great. A further trophy, the Billy Jones Cup (Wainui) found in the cabinet will be contested next
season in our top grade.
Our top side in the Senior 2 grade in the first round won 10 of its 11 games and in its last game recorded, I
believe, a record by the club against West of 102 point to 14. This is was payback for a similar score when
we lost to Upper Hutt in our last season in Premier Grade in the early 2000’s. So the National Mutual Cup
was deservedly ours. The second round saw top wins against, HOBM, Paramata-Plimmerton, Poneke, OBU,
Avalon, Tawa, and one loss to Upper Hutt 12-16. The Semi-finals saw the team win 19-9 against Tawa.
The final for the Ed Chaney Cup saw our team well deserved winners 15-13 against Paramata-Plimmerton.
Our first win of the Cup since 1983 when we had two Senior sides. Dean Gifford‘s recent death was a strong
spur for the team to win this game for him. Two members of this side deservingly made the Wellington
under 20 Reps squad. They were Vaea Fifita and Hilton Mexted. A special mention to the teams scoring
machine, winger, Harry Domett with 27 tries. Knowing that this team is in Senior 1 grade for 2013 is very
satisfying to other old-timers and also myself.
Our Colt’s (Under21) under Chris Kennedy, Ross Curd and Steve Mann, as in last season, performed with
distinction. They instilled the will to win all games and it nearly came off. They won all games in the first
round and won the WRFU Tank Paris Cup, last won by the Club in 1992. Unfortunately they lost 14-25 to
OBU in the final of the John E Kelly Cup. A great season.
With the withdrawal of the 85kg side and the second Under 21 side, the Reserve side under Coach, Scott
Fuller, performed with credit. This team played well above their weight against heavier and more
experienced teams. This team had a large number of young lightweight players and a few vets from our top
side of last year. The games I saw played always showed some true Axeman grit. Deservedly, they finished
6th in the both rounds.
The Pressies, again under Juddy, enjoyed playing more games this season, winning a few and doing well at
the special Pressies Day at Porirua. They won The Rob Goulden Axe trophy back from Ories.
Unfortunately, Murray (Blocker) Gifford had to resign from the position of Club Captain due to Dean’s
deteriorating health and, sadly, his untimely death. So I have done my best with him in mind and the club
as a volunteer. I know, like myself, he would like to see more players, mates and supporters along each
Saturday, just like old timer’s days, TV day and Finals Day.
The Junior Club, under Convenor, Jonathon Bacon, saw 14 teams fielded, with over 190 boys and girls
taking part. We had over 20 players in various representative teams. A big thank you to all coaches and
helpers in this important part of the club.
To all coaches and managers, a big thank you for your time, JT Tawhara, Evan Hopkin, Richard Deck, Chris
Kennedy, Steve Mann, Ross Curd, Scott Fuller, Jason Judd, Duncan Domett, Mo Mackie and most of all,
Murray Mexted. Well done to Bruce Moore, the Team Managers and the Fuller’s for their weekly match
reports. An additional effort that went down well. Francie Russell should receive special mention for her
efforts in managing the bar and raising funds.
Also, thanks to the players for without you we would have no club.
Very special thanks to the WRFU, their staff, and the referees. They are always helpful to the WFC on all
matters.
As we look ahead to next season our goal must be having a couple more teams, more coaches, winning the
Senior 1st and Harper Lock Cup, and looking at going up to Premier Grade. Also a prime objective is
continuing to recruit players to this great Club. Once again I hope I can help out again.

SENIOR 1ST
REPORT – Duncan Domett
Like the first round, the Senior’s finished in style, winning the Ed Chaney Cup by beating Paremata-
Plimmerton 15-13 in an exciting final played at home. Along with the National Mutual Cup from winning
the first round of Senior Two, they received the following interclub trophies; the Air NZ Trophy (Petone),
the Spud Lindsay Cup (Poneke), the Albie Jack Cup (Ories), the Mick Kenny Cup (Johnsonville) and the
Mexted Cup (Tawa). This made for a truly impressive haul of silverware for the WFC Team of the Year.
CORPORATE CONSUMABLES COLTS (U21) REPORT – Chris Kennedy
After winning the first round of the competition, the age grade boys received the Tank Paris Memorial
Trophy making them top contenders for the second round. Unfortunately they narrowly lost the final to
OBU. In the past three years this team has done better and better coming a close 5th in 2010, making the
semi finals in 2011 and then the finals this year. Following the trend, a win is on the cards in 2013!
RESERVES REPORT – Scott Fuller
The social side of things was the main aim for the season and it is fair to say that that part of rugby shone
through. The rugby being played was a fairly high level considering the size of most opposition teams and
the fact that the majority of the team would be eligible to play in the Under 85kg grade. Next season they
we will strive for a higher placing without taking away the main aim which is to have some fun!
PRESIDENT GRADE REPORT – Jason Judd
The Pressies have managed to survive another season and fielded enough novel and inventive excuses to
get away from mowing lawns on a Saturday afternoon to make John Banks proud! We could teach him a
thing or two about fudging the truth! On the field we had another very successful season and won about
two thirds of our games. Performances tended to depend on who turned up and in what state they were
but you tend to get that in our area. Some great individual performances and far too many names to
mention - all of your contributions have been greatly appreciated. I particularly appreciated those who
turned up despite being under the weather (you know who you were), late and pleasingly with mates in
tow!
A highlight for us was finishing up on Presidents Day with a solid win against a team we convincingly lost
too earlier in the season when numbers were a bit short.
Off the field we managed to enjoy a few ales throughout the year and sometimes even waited till after the
game before we had them. Team trip was to Rotorua and another resounding success – no arrests, dodgy
photos, injuries or intervention from the men in blue.
Great season guys, we will see you early next year!
JUNIOR CLUB – Jonathan Bacon
The Axemen Junior Club for 2012 was once again a great success. Our numbers have continued to grow
from year to year with 2 or 3 teams in all of the lower grades. This year saw 14 Wellington Club boys
making it into their respective rep teams. This was a marked increase from previous years and was built off
the increasing numbers at the Club. Many of our Junior teams played in various tournament with 2 teams
winning their grades at 3 different competitions.
We also had a number of teams play at Westpac Stadium during the Lions games. This is a fantastic
opportunity for the younger players to experience the big time.
Our appointment of Mowena as our CCO greatly benefited the coaches and players. Our focus is for a
quality driven rugby culture for all involved - parents, coaches and, of course, the Kids. 2013 looks like it
will be another great year for the Junior Club and we look forward to seeing all current and future Axemen.
Thank you to all involved for a great year!!
WELLINGTON RUGBY BOARD REPORT – Nigel Hughes
My first task after the Club’s AGM last year was to convince the Rugby Board to promote our team from
Senior 2 to Senior 1 in view of a number of factors, not least of which were our team’s results in the second
round and the Club’s attempt to build on the success of the Under 21s. I managed to get approval for this
from the Club Rugby Sub-Committee but by the time it got to Rugby Board level the idea had been
knobbled, as usual and by the usual suspects. As Hutt Old Boys Marist recently found out in having its plea
for two teams in the Senior 2 grade fall on deaf ears, it is still very much dog eat dog in terms of Rugby
Board administration.
The performance of the Hurricanes was welcomed by the Board, with the promise that the budget might be
slightly better this year than had been predicted. It was refreshing to have the nay sayers put in their place
(me included).
The Board of Directors engaged with NZRU when the Hurricanes’ franchise was put out to tender and we
have followed through that process during the year and a decision should have been made by the time the
AGM arrives. Essentially, WRFU would be a 50/50 joint venture partner with commercial interests in the
Hurricanes under an initial nine year licence although some of those aspects are yet to be finalised.
The Judicial Committee kept most Board members very busy for most of the year, at times occupying two
Committees over two nights and unfortunately including a number of referee abuse cases, not only from
players but also from spectators.
Most recently, the performance of the Wellington Lions has been to the fore in what is proving to be a very
tough competition although the gates would indicate that the heady days of receiving Christmas dividends
from WRFU are still a long way away!!
Notwithstanding the comments above there have been some genuine expressions of goodwill in the
remarkable progress made over the last two years with more, I hope to come.
Upon reflection, a solid performance in a busy year.
WELLINGTON BARBELL CLUB – Peter Jack, President
It was great to see that the use of the Gym has helped the success of our teams this season.
Disappointingly, however, the use by some of rugby players was appalling. There were 5 x 10kg broken
since last year, making a total of 10 since we opened. The way it has been left untidy after use is not what
users would do if they were members of other Gym Clubs, i.e. Les Mills, Club Active etc. On top of this the
taking of 2 x 15kg dumbbells by someone is making this report very disappointing. If all equipment, benches
plates, dumbbells and barbells were put back tidy in place for the next users all would be well.
Thanks to Francie Russell the Club enrolled two new members. Success came to active member Melanie
Stein in Track and Field. At the Wellington champs the 19 year old was 1st in the long jump, 2nd in the
100m, and at the NZ Secondary Champs she got 2nd in the long jump and 3rd in the triple jump, and lastly
at the NZ Championships she was 3rd in the triple jump.
With maturity I am hopeful the rugby users will realise there are other users in this Gym and it will left tidy
after use. I expect a change to the better in 2013. It does not take too much of your time.

Obituaries
We record with regret the deaths of the following members:
Roy Atkin QSM
Roy was a Vice President and honorary member for more than 50 years. Despite being nearly blind Roy
was regularly on the sidelines and attended Old Timers Day until recently. Roy died on 27 April 2012 aged
92.
Dean Gifford
The son of Club Captain Murray Gifford, Dean was an outstanding Premier lock in the early 1990's. He
captained the Premiers in his final year, 1996. He represented Nelson Bays and Wairarapa Bush. Dean was
a popular and highly respected police officer. What really distinguished him was his tireless charity work,
focusing particularly on the Children's Ward at Wellington Hospital and supplying toys, sports equipment
and health foods to impoverished children in the Solomon Islands. Dean was a Wellingtonian of the Year
finalist in 2011. He is survived by his wife Penny, and two children, Carter and Riley. Dean died on 23
August 2012 aged 41.
Dr WJ (Bill) Treadwell – Life Member
Bill Treadwell was inducted as a life member in 1997 primarily for his work at the Club’s medical doctor.
He is survived by his wife, Lancely and three of his four children. Bill died on 19 October 2012 aged 84.
