In late summer and early autumn, New Jerseys bats use echolocation to forage for thousands of flying insects and bulk up before their winter hibernation. Since Northern New Jersey is home to the states largest known overwintering site, the Hibernia Hibernaculum, this is the perfect time and place to go batty! On Tuesday, September 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Pyramid Mountain NHA in Montville Twp., join Dr. Lance Risley of the William

Paterson University Biology Department for a slideshow and discussion of North Americas bats. Dr. Risley is involved in the latest bat research. Become updated on current bat populations, and hear the latest on the devastating White Nose Syndrome.

After the presentation, join a guided walk on the darkening trails of Pyramid Mountain NHA with Dr. Risley and a staff naturalist. An echolocation device is used to aid in the search for foraging bats. This bat detector makes the bats high-frequency sounds audible to human ears.

This program is designed for ages 8 and older, and the fee is $6 per person. Space is limited so call early to register.

Start a Butterfly GardenInterested in attracting beautiful butterflies to your yard or garden? Late summer through early fall is the ideal time to start a native wildflower garden to accomplish just that. Join us to learn butterfly gardening techniques at Butterfly Garden Basics on Saturday, July 25, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Pyramid Mountain NHA in Montville Township. Discover which plants and other habitat features work best and why butterflies are attracted to them. Learn techniques on what to include in your garden and simple ideas for installation. See images and samples of colorful native plants that butterflies love, and get information on the propagation, planting, and cultivation of these lovely wildflowers.

Planting native species is a crucial step in bringing wildlife to your yard, so you can enjoy watching them. These plants provide vital food and shelter for a wide variety of fascinating animals, such as songbirds and mammals, as well as butterflies, caterpillars, and other insects. Take a guided tour of the Pyramid Mountain butterfly garden with a staff naturalist to see concepts in action, and to search for examples of wildlife enjoying the habitat weve created.

    BIBLICAL BOTANY Walking Tour

Walk the Bible with Torah scholar Dr. Jonathan Greenberg on Sunday, July 19. Agronomist, botanist, teacher, and plant geek, Dr. Greenberg has led tours of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris Township for the past several years. Touring the gardens at their mid-summer peak with Jon is a multi-faceted pleasure. His knowledge of botany and the Talmud combine to make a fascinating walk, even for experienced horticulturists. Learn something new from a very old source.

In response to the great demand for this program, two walks are scheduled for your convenience. Register for either the morning or the afternoon tour, and prepare to be astonished at how many plants growing here in New Jersey have an Old Testament connection. You probably have some bible plants growing in your garden right now! This program is eligible for 2.0 Rutgers Master Gardener CEUs.

A Fashion Show with Historic Proportions

Journey through the decades of the 1830s to the 1860s, and discover fashions of past American women, all thanks to the fashion plates in Godeys Ladys Book. This unique and fun fashion show, with an historic twist, takes place on Sunday, September 20 in the grand historic mansion of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum.

Before the 1830s, American women relied heavily on European ideals for their fashion identity. New styles might take months or even years to cross the Atlantic and make their way across the United States. Imported fabrics were extremely expensive and anything fashionable was considered a luxury of the wealthy. However, as the American economy blossomed due to the rising success of the textile industry, women suddenly had the time and the means to worry about their appearance. The stage was conveniently set for Mr. Louis A. Godey to promote his new gift book to the American public. Godeys Ladys Book was originally meant to be the American womans personal handbook, with advice on everything from etiquette to marriage, as well as poetry, timely essays, musical guides, and a few tips on fashion.

This fashion event takes place in the beautiful historic Mansion at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum, located at 353 East Hanover Avenue in Morris Township. Models wearing clothing from the 1830s to the 1860s present on different topics ranging from 19th century fashion, womens entertainment, and domestic life.

Tours begin at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m. Space is limited in the Mansion. Preregistration is strongly suggested to guarantee a spot on the tour. Admission to this event is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, and $5 for children. Children under 4 are FREE.

For more information, please call 973.285.6537.

Evening Paddle on Split Rock Reservoir

Theres nothing like gliding across a scenic lake in a canoe while herons fish along the shoreline and turtles bask on rocks. On Wednesday, September 23, join the Basic Canoe Skills Class, from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. followed by a guided Evening Canoe Paddle, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at beautiful Split Rock Reservoir in Rockaway Township.

Those who are new to canoeing must first begin by completing the Basic Canoe Skills Class as it is a prerequisite for the Evening Canoe Paddle and all other MCPC canoeing programs. During this program, learn all the basics for staying safe and having fun in a canoe. Learn and practice a number of strokes and maneuvers, including the forward stroke, stopping, spinning, abeams, and turns, as well as how to carry and launch a canoe properly. By the end of the course, youll be confident in your abilities and rejuvenated by the scenic views and fresh air. This basic skills class is taught by instructors certified by the American Canoe Association. All participants must know how to swim, and the cost for the introductory training is $10 per person.

At 5:30 p.m., graduates using their newfound skills, as well as those experienced paddlers who have previously completed the canoe skills training, are invited to join the guided canoe paddle. A naturalist points out wildlife as you leisurely glide across the water, finishing around sunset. The cost for this paddling excursion is $20 per person.

All Morris County Park Commission Paddling Programs are designed for ages 12 and up, and children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited, so advanced registration is required. Please dress for the weather and bring water.

    MORRIS PARK ALLIANCE UPDATE

The Morris Park Alliance is eagerly anticipating the first full year of operation at the Jets Play 60 All Access Playground! Designed for children of all abilities, the playground is located at Central Park of Morris County, in Parsippany at the Morris Plains border. With the grand opening of the playground late last summer, Phase 2 planning became clear; shade is desperately needed. Fundraising is ongoing to install shade structures, which will overhang sections to provide shade for the children from sun and heat. All donations are welcome. Donations of $250 receive a commemorative balloon shaped plaque to be hung on the fence.

Another Alliance project in support of Park Commission programming is updating and renovating the exhibits at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham. After celebrating its 50th birthday, the center needs to better tell the story of the interaction of nature and man, and the impact of human living on the wilderness of the Great Swamp. Tree cookies are being sold, and grants and donations are being solicited for this project. Design assistance is being generously donated by Novartis employees.

To contribute to these, or any other project or program of the Park Commission, please email Denise Lanza, Executive Director of the Morris Park Alliance at [email protected] or call 973.631.5273.
