Monitoring and Evaluation
So that Ardoch can continue to deliver Pathways Beyond School programs, we will be issuing you and
your students a survey after the completion of the activity. Please work with your Ardoch contact to
confirm whether these should be provided in hard copy or completed online. We appreciate your
support and ensuring their completion in a timely manner.
Preparing for Mock Interviews
Teacher-led preparation prior to the Mock Interviews sessions is critical to the success of the program.
Students require explicit instruction around the purpose and benefit of participating in a mock interview,
to support their future experiences on the pathway to gaining employment.
Teachers can encourage students’ participation in the activity by reminding them that:
Adult workplace volunteers participating in the Mock Interviews are there to support students, and will be encouraging and supportive – this is a practice activity designed to be a positive experience for students
Being interviewed in a mock situation will build students’ confidence so that when they are in a real-life interview setting, they will know what to expect and have a better understanding of how to prepare and present themselves
In order to maxiise learning outcomes relating to the Mock Interviews program, Ardoch asks that
teachers facilitate pre-program learning activities that will support students to:
Search for a job vacancy, and identify key selection criteria
Respond to a job vacancy advertisement through an appropriately structured cover letter that addresses key selection criteria
Respond to a job vacancy advertisement through an appropriately targeted resume
Student Resources
In the following pages are resources for students to use to prepare for their mock interview.
Post-Program Activity Review
Following the Mock Interviews, Ardoch asks that teachers facilitate a post-program review with
students, supporting them to reflect on what they learnt from the experience. Discussion could include:
What did students learn about the interview process?
How will this experience help them in future job interviews?
How did students’ preparation for the interview support them? Could they have prepared more?
Pathways Beyond School – Mock Interviews
STUDENT RESOURCES
Mock Interviews – what to expect
An interview is a standard part of gaining employment in almost
any job. Experiencing a mock interview will help you to improve
your interviewing skills and build your confidence so that when
you are faced with a real-life interview, you will know what to do!
In your mock interview you will meet an adult volunteer who will
support you to practice and build interview skills in a mock
interview scenario. Your ‘interviewer’ will ask you questions
about why you should be hired for the job, based on the
information you provide in your cover letter and resume.
Remember: Stay calm... The mock interview is a training session
and the interviewer is there to support you, providing you with invaluable feedback that you will be able
to use for future interview experiences in real-life situations.
Preparation
It is very important that you prepare for your interview. The resources in this booklet will help you to
prepare a cover letter and a resume, in response to an advertised job vacancy.
Youth Central is a website provided by the Victorian Government which gives excellent tips on all things
relating to job seeking. This booklet contains some information from this site. Additional tips and
resources can be found at: http://www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au/jobs-careers
Step 1: Find a job vacancy
Once you identify a job that interests you (by searching online or reading the newspaper), read the key
selection criteria carefully. This will tell you exactly what experience or qualities that the employer is
wanting for this role. Your cover letter and resume should be written in a way that specifically refers to
these requirements or criteria. It is very important that you write both of these documents carefully
and have someone else check them for correct spelling and grammar.
Step 2: Write a cover letter
A cover letter is a single-page letter that should be part of any job application.
In your cover letter you are trying to convince the employer why they should consider you for the
position. Key points of a cover letter are that it:
Introduces you to the reader Mentions the job and organisation specifically Responds to the requirements of the job, by matching your skills and experience to these Attracts the reader's interest and refers them to your resume
Pathways Beyond School – Mock Interviews
STUDENT RESOURCES
Write a cover letter (continued)
You should never use the same cover letter for different job
applications. Your cover letter needs to show that you know what the job
involves and what the organisation is looking for. You should be as
specific as you can about your skills and qualities and how they match
the job or organisation's needs.
What you should include in your cover letter:
1) Your name and contact details
Put your name and contact details at the top of your cover letter.
Include your email and phone number.
2) The employer’s name and contact details
This goes under your own name and contact details you should include:
- the name of the person you're writing to
- their position or the name of their company
- their contact details.
You can also use "To Whom It May Concern", but try to only use this as a last resort.
3) The title of the job you're applying for
Explain which job you're applying for by either writing this on a line by itself:
e.g. Re: Application for Stock Controller position
or in the opening paragraph:
e.g. I am writing to apply for the recently advertised Stock Controller position.
4) A list of your relevant skills
Your letter should include a brief summary that matches your skills and experiences to the job
description. A short bullet-pointed list is fine.
If you're answering a job ad, either the ad or the position description may provide a list of skills and
experiences (key selection criteria) that are essential for doing the job. Your cover letter needs to
respond to all of the items on the "essential" list and as many items as possible on the "desirable"
list in as short a way as possible.
5) A summary of why you're right for the job
After listing your skills and experience you should explain why these make you suited to the job
e.g. "My interest in books and my customer service experience make me ideal for this role."
6) Ask them to read your resume and contact you.
Try something simple like, "I have attached a copy of my resume. I look forward to hearing from you soon about this job."
An example of a cover letter is on the following page.

Mobile: XXX XXXX XXXX Mr Allan Moyle John Smith and Associates Phone: XX XXXX XXXX Email: [email protected]
23 August 2017 RE: Application for Casual Retail Sales Assistant position Dear Mr. Moyle,
As a highly motivated and dedicated student with strong communication and interpersonal skills, I would like to
apply for the position of Casual Retail Sales Assistant.
As a student I have been extensively involved in my school community, which has allowed me to develop strong
interpersonal skills. My involvement in various events, including drama eisteddfods and sports carnivals, has
allowed me to work closely with my peers while supporting the school community as a whole.
These experiences have allowed me to develop strong time management and organisational skills, which I see
as being very important when seeking to work in casual employment while continuing to study.
Personal attributes that I believe make me suitable for this position include:
- Motivation: Volunteer participation and school results demonstrate high motivation.
- Customer Service: Assisting with the sale of products at community events has allowed the development of customer service skills.
- Communication: Acting in drama performances and working as an MC for school events has allowed the development of communication skills.
My teachers and educators have commended me for my willingness to participate and my dedication to helping
out where possible. I enjoy working with others and believe that my strong communication skills will ensure that I
can meet the expectations of this role.
I am aware that you will receive a large number of applications for this job, but I would very much appreciate the
opportunity to demonstrate my capabilities to you in person.
I believe that I have a lot to offer your organisation. I am keen to develop my professional skills and look forward
to discussing my application with you at an interview. I have enclosed a copy of my resume for your
consideration. I can be contacted at all times on the details provided above.
Thanking you in advance for your time,
Joanne Tint

Step 3: Write a resume
Your resume will support what you say in your cover
letter, by detailing your experience, training and other
relevant qualities.
There are many different templates available and
ways that a resume can be presented, but the most
important thing is that it is clearly written and
formatted so that it is easy to read.
It is good to present the information on your resume in this order:
1. Your contact details
2. Opening statement about yourself that highlights your experience and capabilities
3. List of your key skills that are relevant to the job
4. Education background (schooling)
5. List of personal qualities that make you a good employee and a willing team member
6. Work experience/career overview, showing achievements that highlight your experience working in a professional environment (this can include any student work placements, work experience or volunteer positions that demonstrate what you can bring to the organisation)
7. Qualifications (e.g. training or certificates)
8. References/referees
An example of a 2-page resume is on the following pages.

Step 4: Getting ready for the interview
Now that you have written your cover letter and resume,
use these documents to revise what you will talk about in
the interview. Make sure that you focus on the skills that
you have and how you have been developing them at
school or in other work experience opportunities.
Prepare your interview responses
Your interviewer will ask you standard interview questions.
Practice your responses before the interview.
Sample interview questions are on the following page.
Prepare questions to ask the interviewer
While it is important to be able to answer the interviewer’s questions clearly and in a way that shows
that you are a suitable candidate for the position, it is also good to show that you have thought about
questions to ask them as well. An interviewer will be impressed if you can show that you have given
close consideration to the position, and to the organisation.
Make sure, however, that your questions are not answered in some way in the job description, as this
will show that you haven’t read it properly!
Questions you could ask include:
- Does the job involve working as part of a team?
- What kind of professional development opportunities are there within the organisation?
- Can you tell me more about the kind of person you're looking for?
- Who would I be reporting to if I got the job?
Research the organisation
Employers will be impressed if you show you know a bit about their organisation. Use their website to
find out more about the business, and share your new knowledge in the interview. You could use this
as part of the questions you ask the interviewer.
e.g. “I have read that your organisation started over 20 years ago as one small shop, and now it is an
Australia-wide business. What would you say is the key to the company’s success and growth?”
Present yourself professionally
Plan the outfit that you will wear to the interview, making sure it is clean, tidy and professional. It is
important that you are presentable and clean, to show that you respect yourself and the opportunity to
be employed.
