PROMOTING ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND FOSTERING JOB CREATION

Total contributes to the creation and growth of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by providing material and finan-cial assistance, such as

microcredit and business management trainings. Since diversification of the local economic fabric is a top priority, Total supports local initiatives in diverse sectors

(craft industries, agriculture, information technology, and others). Moreover, the Group promotes job creation, especially for young women, by supporting

educational and training programs, such as Action de solidarité internationale (ASI) [international solidarity action] in the Congo.

OTHER TOTAL COMMITMENTS IN NIGER Total is working alongside local transport companies to provide their managers and drivers with training contributing to better transport management in Niger, as well as improved road safety indicators. Regarding health, a wide-ranging research program on early diagnosis of infant meningitis was launched, thanks to the Total Foundation, at the Pasteur Institute in Paris and the Centre de recherche médicale et sanitaire in Niamey (CERMES) [center for medical and health research]. This is the fi rst step in a program of prevention, care, and treatment of after-effects that will be conducted in the country.

ack in 1993, as an intern at the Total Liberté service station, I already knew I wanted to grow professionally. At that time, my man-ager had been through the “young dealer”

program set up by Total. I witnessed his career change, and that made me want to give it a try. The Total inspectors in Niger quickly noticed I was moti-vated and offered me the opportunity to join the pro-gram, and manage my own station. I accepted without hesitation.

A STIMULATING TRAININGSince I really wanted to develop my professional career, I gave myself the means to succeed by faith-fully following the training programs on quality, safety, service, and so on. The content of the ses-sions, held at headquarters in Niamey, was very interesting and refl ected the realities of being a manager. I was trained in the use of all the manage-

ment and quality control tools that are now part of my daily routine. At the same time, I increased my experience as I rose through the ranks. This is how, from my intern position, I became a team coordina-tor, then an assistant dealer, and a station manager. In 2000, I became the dealer of the Total Maradi Gare Routière service station, located in the provinces. Now, I am in charge of the Total Wadata service sta-tion which has 19 employees.

ON THE ROAD TO INDEPENDENCETo support my work, Total gave me a loan that enabled me to operate my station. Unlike a bank, they didn't ask me for a deposit, and I can pay it back at my own pace. My loan will be reimbursed in a few years, and then I'll be completely independent. I know that my story is inspiring to my team members. Some employ-ees are considering applying to the “young dealer” program. My advice? Go for it!

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

EDUCATION ORIENTED TOWARD THE JOB MARKET YETUNDE SHADO’ S PATH. AFTER COMPLETING HER STUDIES AT IPS*, THANKS TO A SCHOLARSHIP GRANTED BY TOTAL, THIS YOUNG NIGERIAN WAS RECRUITED BY THE GROUP AS A CORROSION ENGINEER.

love math, physics, and chem-istry. That's why I studied mate-rial science and metallurgical engineering at university. After

graduating, and a barrage of interviews and tests, most notably with Total, I got a scholarship to train at IPS*, a Total partner since its creation. There, I com-pleted a Master's in Petroleum Engi-neering and Project Development.

QUICKLY UP TO SPEEDWhat's special about IPS is that a large number of professors are professionals who come from the industry sector. The courses are very specific, oriented toward putting what we learn into prac-tice. That makes it possible to get quickly up to speed and able to adapt easily on the ground. It's undoubtedly the reason why I was hired by Total right after getting

my master's degree, fi rst for a probation-ary period of six months, during which my skills were tested under the wings of a tutor, and then permanently.

BECOMING AN EXPERTSo, now I'm a Corrosion Engineer in the Joint Venture Offshore Division, which is what I always wanted to do. I could have chosen to work for a large construction group, but I'm very happy at Total because the Group offers an enjoyable work environment, with nice colleagues and opportunities for advancement. In the future, I will also have the opportu-nity to work at different oil fields, or change departments. But, for now, I'm happy where I am: I want to be a corro-sion expert!

OTHER TOTAL COMMITMENTS IN NIGERIA In partnership with the Institut européen de coopération et de développement (IECD) [european institute for cooperation and development], Total is conducting training activities and supporting small- and medium-sized enterprises in the Niger Delta. The objective: to strengthen enterprises and create jobs. In addition, the Group is providing the Egi community (about 100,000 people) with access to electricity, thanks to the installation of gas turbines on its OML 58 production site. Total has also made it possible for eight nearby villages to access drinking water. As for education, the Group has distributed close to 25,000 scholarships in the country since 1999.

or more than 40 years, 2iE has been training students from Africa and elsewhere in engi-neering, specializing in areas

such as water, the environment, civil engi-neering, and mines. With Total, we share a vision of education as a lever for develop-ment in African countries. Through its Total professeurs associés (TPA) program, the Group demonstrates its commitment to education, and that is what attracted us. Together, we have the same ambition: to offer quality training locally to young Afri-cans so they can undertake major projects in their countries and abroad. Our efforts have paid off since 93% of students who graduate from 2iE fi nd jobs.

A WIN-WIN PARTNERSHIP For us, training is effective when it pro-vides theoretical knowledge while being

fi rmly anchored in the realities of the mar-ket. By involving its educators and offering training programs, Total enables our stu-dents to gain knowledge and professional experience in areas such as business management, risk prevention, and project management. Therefore, young people are trained for the needs of the market, and some of them are directly hired by the Group. We also conduct numerous projects that allow students to work on specifi c subjects, and workers to benefit from the presence of young engineers. Our latest collaboration with Total involved an eco service station project, which could become a reality.

OTHER TOTAL COMMITMENTS IN BURKINA FASO Since the end of 2011, Total has been supporting Cofatex, a Burkinabe company that manufactures cotton fabrics and employs 20 people full-time. In an effort to maintain and grow local economic players, the affi liate orders fabrics from this factory. They are then dyed and sewn locally to make staff uniforms for 73 service stations in the Total network. Nearly 600 staff members wear these uniforms: an initiative which combines sustainable development and fair trade.

ENRICH EDUCATIONAL CONTENT AND WEAVE LOCAL NETWORKS

To better prepare young people for the job market, the Group supports professional training organizations, sponsors specialized, high-level university studies, and offers

scholarships and training programs to students. Total also partners with regional universities (2iE in Burkina Faso, Wits University in South Africa, and ISTAC in the Congo

and Cameroon), which benefit from courses taught by the 250 Total professeurs associés (TPA) [Total associate professors]. Additionally, the Group funds a chair in Contemporary Africa at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Since 2011 and in partnership with Google,

Total has been developing a training program for professors, called Empower-ing the Teachers (ETT), which began in Nigeria with eight university professors sent to MIT. The Group aims to expand this project to other countries in order to reach 20 participants a year.

OTHER TOTAL COMMITMENTS IN ANGOLATo strengthen local industrial development, Total has, since 2008, invested 22.8 million euro in the construction and operation of four Eiffel high schools. Managed by the Mission laïque française, a secular association, these high schools offer free, high-quality science education to 570 students. In line with this action, Total has partnered with the Institut national du pétrole [national petroleum institute], which trains engineers specialized in the oil industry. Regarding health, the Group participates, alongside the World Bank, in the National Program for the Revitalization of the Rural Health System. The objective is to rehabilitate the health centers in fi ve provinces (Bengo, Malanje, Moxico, Lunda Norte, and Uige) and improve the training level of nurses and midwives for a long-term impact.

onangol works with Total mainly on Block 17, located deep offshore and consisting of four major fi elds: Girassol, Dalia, Pazfl or, and CLOV. As Director of Production, Reservoir, and

Operations at Sonangol, I am well positioned to observe the role foreign companies play in the economic development of the country. With Total, we share the same goals: to increase reliance on local skills and Angolan companies in order to develop the natural resources of our country.

PROMOTING TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT...We also expect our partner to participate in local economic development through technology and knowledge transfer, to assist us in strengthening the production capacities in Angola, and to truly get involved

in the growth of the country. As the fi rst oil producer in Angola, Total calls on an increasing number of national companies and is working to improve their services. Total has also established excellent cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Agostinho Neto University to increase the quality of general and professional education in Angola. It is important to invest in education to develop local skills.

... AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENTReliance on national labor is increasing from one project to another. Within the framework of Pazflor, more than 3 million hours of work have been performed by Angolans, and the CLOV project’s goal is to reach 9 million hours of local work. Today, 80% of the workforce on Total oil platforms in Angola are Angolans.

STIMULATING THE LOCAL ECONOMY AND SUPPORTING COUNTRIES TOWARD AUTONOMY

By making the recruitment of local labor and the call on national companies a priority, Total creates jobs and helps boost the economies of host countries. To increase the

participation of local companies without violating safety rules and ethical standards, Total has set up a policy based on prequalifi cation of subcontractors and employees’

training. Through these actions, Total fosters major knowledge and skill transfer. A win-win approach that contributes to the development of the industrial landscape.

DEMOCRATIZING ACCESS TO SOLAR ENERGYJACOB GILOH’S PATH. HE BECAME AN INDEPENDENT RESELLER AND NOW WALKS THROUGH NAIROBI'S INNER CITY TO BRING LIGHT TO PEOPLE WHO DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO ELECTRICITY…

was working as pump attendant at a service station in Nairobi which began selling Total solar equipment: lamps that recharge during the day and are used for lighting at night or charging

mobile phones. I was really fascinated by these products. Moreover, they are very well known, and lots of people ask for them. In Kenya, 88% of people have no access to electricity and mainly use kerosene lamps for lighting.

LIGHTING AT LOWER COSTNonetheless, kerosene is pretty expensive, up to 90 shillings a liter. Once the basic equipment is purchased, these solar lamps allow families to have access to lighting and telecommunications almost for free, since sunlight costs nothing. In addition, these high quality products are reliable, sustainable, and have little environmental impact. This is why

I applied to Total to become an independent reseller. I studied marketing and am very interested in sales. So, I bought my fi rst stock on credit. That’s how I started my business.

MEETING CUSTOMERSToday, I walk the shanty towns of Nairobi to meet customers. I give them information on the products, but I do not actually provide maintenance. Rather, I provide after-sales service: if a product is defective or damaged, I return it to the supplier to have it repaired. My only regret is that, for some households, the starting price (10 dollars, or about 840 shillings) is still too expensive. Even so, in the long run, solar energy is much more cost effective than an oil lamp. In the future, I would like to expand my business to remote villages in the east and west of Kenya where the population is isolated.

OTHER TOTAL COMMITMENTS IN KENYA With Total Eco Challenge launched in 2003, the Group’s Kenyan affi liate has set several objectives: to preserve and restore local forests as well as raise awareness of the importance of planting trees. For this reason, Total is encouraging companies, schools, associations, and local communities to participate in this vast reforestation operation. Every Total service station is used as a tree nursery and provides seedlings and information. To date, more than 3 million people have been involved in the project, and over 500 million trees have been planted.

PROVIDING ENERGY TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE Providing as many people as possible with access to energy is Total's main mission worldwide – especially in Africa. One of the ways to meet this

commitment is to build the infrastructure that provides electricity to various populations, most notably, in rural areas. For the Group, this also involves facilitating

access to alternative, less costly energy sources, such as solar equipment or liquefi ed petroleum gas (LPG) through the marketing of small gas

cylinders. To supply more remote areas, Total envisions new distribution methods and is contributing to the creation of a network of local resellers.

ven though malaria currently causes 500 deaths a year in Senegal against 8,000 in 2005, efforts to completely eradicate

the disease must go on. We have to learn good habits at an early age, such as always sleeping under a mosquito net, wearing clothing that covers the body, and avoiding areas with standing water. For this purpose, we use the "Living Together" class in our school schedule to address these messages with children. A faithful partner since 2011, Total is helping us with this effort. Together, we have already organized two major awareness sessions that involved more than 1,000 children.

COMBINING PREVENTION WITH GAMESBeyond the distribution of mosquito nets to pupils, Total is providing us with

teaching kits to educate children about the disease, in order to give them the means to prevent infection. Children really appreciate these materials because they include fun activities and a question and answer game that encourages interactivity. During the two sessions we organized, the Managing Director of Total Senegal was present as well as the famous Senegalese singer, Coumba Gawlo Seck. The children were thrilled and their parents tell me that they are still talking about the ways to protect themselves from malaria at home. It's the best proof that our actions are meaningful.

OTHER TOTAL COMMITMENTS IN SENEGAL Total is participating in the restoration of the Joal-Fadiouth mangrove forest and has invested 243,000 euro over fi ve years. It is a project led in partnership with the Total Foundation, in an effort to enhance the sanitary conditions of the inhabitants’ direct environment, and to contribute to the development of economic activity. After fi rst opening at the Quai Branly Museum in Paris, the Total Foundation enabled the display of the "African Presence" exhibition at the Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, in 2010. Tracing the history of the intellectual and artistic movement of the 1950s led by Alioune Diop, this exhibition celebrates the country’s wealth of cultural history. A traveling version will soon be available for interested universities and schools, with the assistance of the French embassy.

FIGHTING AGAINST PANDEMICSTotal focuses its efforts on the fi ght against AIDS and malaria. Every year, the Group organizes awareness sessions involving employees and the general public. In order to gain the means to take

action, Total created the AIDS Committee and is associated in many countries with the Total Foundation, which relies on the expertise in virology of the Pasteur Institute.

IMPROVING HEALTH CONDITIONS Total provides funding for medical infrastruc-ture, especially health centers, and for training medical staff. To improve access to drinking water,

the Group is leading various actions, such as the installation of pumps and the restoration of wells, especially in South Sudan.

THE TOTAL FOUNDATION RENEWS ITS FIVE-YEAR-OLD PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PASTEUR INSTITUTE

6.15.10

fter completing my Master of Science degree, I was accepted on a placement at the CIRMF. For me, it was an

opportunity to complete my education by learning biomedical techniques. After a year, the virology unit offered to hire me. I accepted without second thoughts because the CIRMF is a unique research center, internationally recognized for its works on existing and emergent viruses. Created in 1974 by the Gabonese govern-ment and Total Gabon, this exceptional center plays a strategic role on a global scale in understanding the causal relation-ship between health and environment.

CROSSROADS OF KNOWLEDGEAt the CIRMF, I benefi ted from a continu-ous training that allowed me to com-plete my doctoral thesis. Today, as a

research fellow working on HIV, I am in an ideal position at the center, which is at the crossroads between the profes-sional sector, the academic world and public health issues. We have an extensive technical platform to monitor numerous patients, especially those with HIV, in support of Gabonese outpatient treatment centers. We also benefit from exchange programs with other research centers in Africa, Europe, and the United States. Their sci-entists come to the CIRMF to carry out research of common interest. These partnerships enrich the training of Gabonese researchers and students. For me, it's a key to the development of the country.

OTHER TOTAL COMMITMENTS IN GABON Total supports national economic development by participating in large-scale projects, such as the modernization of the Port-Gentil airport and the installation of optical fi ber in the country. In partnership with the Institut Gabonais d’aide au développement (IGAD) [Gabonese Institute for the Support of Development], Total also encourages local initiatives, such as activities for cassava processing. Since 2002, Total has been supporting the Centre for Professional Specialization (CSP), which trains oil industry technicians, whose rate of employment is almost 100%. Total also partners with the Institut du pétrole et du gaz (IPG) [oil and gas institute] of Port-Gentil, whose fi rst promotion of oil operators graduated in 2011.

ROAD SAFETY CULTURE IN ACTION DRISS EL AMRANI’S PATH. HE IS THE DIRECTOR OF THE ROAD TRANSPORT COMPANY SAHARA LOGISTIC NORD, WHICH WORKS FOR TOTAL IN MOROCCO. HIS GOAL: END TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS.

n 2011, Morocco deplored more than 4,000 deaths related to road accidents. This fi gure is slightly higher than French statistics, but there are about 38 million vehicles on French roads

against 3 million in Morocco. The main cause of this problem is the irresponsible behavior of drivers: 94% of them do not even respect stop signs. The government has therefore decided to address the issue by imple-menting much more restrictive traffi c regulations.

MAXIMUM REQUIREMENTS AT ALL LEVELSAt Sahara Logistic Nord, we anticipated this safety measure by applying even more stringent rules in order to reduce risks as much as possible. This especially concerns our fl eet of 70 vehicles as well as our drivers. Accordingly, all our trucks comply with ADR* standards in effect in Europe and are equipped with onboard com-puters. Positioning systems enable us to monitor in real

time the speed and itinerary of vehicles. As oil transport professionals, we must be irreproachable. Total Mo-rocco, our fi rst client, has been supporting us since 2006 in this area, thanks to the requirements in its specifi cations for the transport of hazardous substanc-es and its ongoing outreach regarding road safety. Above all, Total is assisting us in implementing the re-quired specifi cations, including providing trucks and tankers that comply with company standards. Those that do not meet the conditions will no longer be used. Finally, Total has allowed us to benefi t from its expertise in driver training, paying as much attention to driving behavior as to vehicle monitoring or to knowledge of the products transported. As a consequence of these actions, no serious accident has been reported since 2008.

* European agreement on the international transport of hazardous goods by road.

OTHER TOTAL COMMITMENTS IN MOROCCOSince 2007, Total has been leading a large operation to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and AIDS, aimed at truck drivers. It involves providing information about these diseases, offering screening, and distributing condoms. Realized in partnership with the Total Foundation and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, this action is receiving the support of the Pasteur Institute in France, the Pasteur Institute of Morocco, and the Moroccan Association de lutte contre le sida (ALCS) [association for the fi ght against AIDS]. Since its launch, 135,000 truck drivers have benefi ted from this initiative.

OUR ACTIONACROSS THE CONTINENT

STRENGTHENING OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY

Total places great importance on its employees’ and contractors’ safety, whether on the road or at the workstation. This is why major work is being carried out on the best practices to adopt.

12 Golden Rules have been established by the Group to facilitate sharing best practices between different sites, most notably, through the World Day for Safety at Work.

RAISING AWARENESS OF ROAD SAFETYTo meet the general public, Total drives its Road Safety Caravan to all the affi liates, especially in Ghana and Cameroon. The prevention and road

hazard awareness campaigns particularly target children. Teaching kits have been specifi cally designed for this purpose.

This “supermonitoring”, which I organized on a technical level, took place just off N'Kossa, one of our offshore oil fi elds in the Congo.

GROUNDBREAKING EXPLORATIONAfter four months of intense preparation, we mobilized a team of experts on the high seas for two weeks. Onboard our boat, equipped with a boom for taking samples and setting up multi-ple sensors, we brought together representatives of the Institut français de recherche pour l'exploitation de la mer (French research institute for exploration of the sea)and the University of Angers, a Norwegian research team studying ecotoxicity, as

well as members of the Institut de recherches internationales et stratégiques (IRIS) [institute for international and strategic research] and the Total Petrochemicals research center.

IMPROVING EXISTING TECHNIQUESIn general, we use "conventional" methods that rely on analy-sis of the seabed. This work on sediment has two aspects: physicochemical analyses and assessment of benthic mac-rofauna (crustaceans, mollusks, etc.), which are very sensi-tive to any trace of environmental contamination. Our work consisted in comparing these known techniques with other innovative techniques, in this case, the installation of passive sensors, the use of biomarkers, and ecotoxicological testing. We reached the conclusion that the conventional methods remain more effective at this time. Nonetheless, we are currently working on perfecting the innovative techniques to develop know-how in the area of environmental monitoring. It is our responsibility to offer our contribution to scientifi c knowledge.

OTHER TOTAL COMMITMENTS IN THE CONGO By participating in the renovation and restoration of 12% of the city of Pointe-Noire’s electrical network, Total has made it possible for around 100,000 inhabitants of working-class neighborhoods to access energy. The Group is also taking action in the Association Pointe-Noire industrielle (APNI) [Pointe-Noire industrial association] to support the creation and invigoration of local SMEs. Thanks to Total's support, the Augagneur high school of Pointe-Noire has implemented a program of "Strengthened Classes" in scientifi c subjects. In addition, two projects are currently under consideration: those of the Catholic University of Pointe-Noire and Terre d’école, whose fi rst school will be constructed in Brazzaville.

OUR ACTIONACROSS THE CONTINENT

MANAGING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTSAware of the possible impacts of its activities on the environment, Total is making every effort to reduce its footprint and contribute to improving knowledge about the

environment. All exploration and construction projects involve prior impact assess- ments on water, air, and soil, as well as the implementa-tion of an environmental management plan.

ACTING AND RAISING AWARENESS TO RESPECT THE PLANETTotal contributes to the preservation of environmen-tal heritage and cultural resources (such as the restoration of a Senegalese mangrove forest and archeological digs in Libya

and Mauritania). The Group also participates in activities (such as Lemurs' Park in Madagascar and the Kids in Kruger Program in South Africa) to teach children to respect biodiversity.

BRIDGING TWO WORLDSJIMMY KISARACH’S PATH. COMMUNITY LIAISON OFFICER FOR TOTAL IN UGANDA, HIS MISSION IS TO BE AN EFFECTIVE LIAISON WITH LOCAL COMMUNITIES TO ENSURE THAT TOTAL ACTIVITIES ARE WELL UNDERSTOOD.

t's been 10 months since I started working for Total in Uganda as a member of its team of eight Community Liaison Offi cers. Our main mission is to bond with local communities. This is very

important because if these ties do not exist, relations can rapidly deteriorate.

GIVING BACKI make sure that we coexist under the best circum-stances, that Total activities do not have negative impacts, especially on harvesting, and that social conditions improve. Since the land belongs to com-munities, you have to give back in return. That's what we do through projects that contribute to local devel-opment or by supporting government programs. Sometimes it's necessary to demonstrate that Total exploration activity is not a threat or source of incon-venience, and that payment of compensation is not

systematic but must be related to negative impacts, if there are any.

BUILDING TRUSTLocal communities have big expectations, especially regarding employment, and many feel that they have not always been fairly treated in the past. We are therefore not always viewed favorably, and it is necessary to build relationships of trust. Without doubt, this is why I was chosen by Total after answering an ad in the local newspaper. Not only am I Ugandan and know the communities well, but I also have the experience necessary for the job. I was a teacher in a private school for two years, and, above all, I had already worked as Community Liaison Offi cer for a nongovernmental organization. An asset in developing harmonious relations with neighboring communities.

OTHER TOTAL COMMITMENTS IN UGANDA By working with the World Bank, in April 2011, Total launched the Africa Road Safety Corridors Initiative (ARSCI). Nicknamed the “Corridors Project”, this action aims to improve road safety in two border areas, including the North corridor that links Kenya to Burundi by way of Uganda. Under this framework, an independent structure–Safe Way Right Way–was created to take action on the ground. In Uganda, it will deploy road safety caravans to raise awareness among populations as well as create rest areas for truck drivers on the road connecting Malaba to Hoima through Kampala.

One of Total’s top priorities is to understand the environment in which it operates and to know its various stakeholders. Good dialogue with

stakeholders makes it possible to maintain strong relationships as well as create action plans and projects that better meet expectations.

The Group has thus created a tool to facilitate dialogue: SRM+ (Stake-holder Relationship Management). It also supports research

programs on business performance (ESSEC Irené program) in order to better meet the expectations of neighbor-ing communities.
