Diamond B Farm a jewel in Pennsylvania

Sharing a conversation with Glenn Brok of Diamond B Farm is nostalgic funny and entertaining but behind his stories there is a hardworking dedicated horseman husband and father He effortlessly skips from chap-ter to chapter in his life in which he has worn the hats and helmets of National Guardsman exercise rid-er jockey agent train-er polo player world traveler and horse breeder He and his wife Becky live on their farm in Mohrsville which is also home to five stallions a broodmare band weanlings and sales yearlings

Glenn has always loved racing and has honed the fine art of juggling responsibilities in order to be involved in the sport When he was younger he was a member of the National Guard ndash his time there including a mandatory two-week summer camp ldquoI convinced my sergeant to let me spend the camp time at an installation called Fort In-diantown Gap in Lebanon Pa rather than in Norfolk Va I could be near Penn National and continue galloping horses Irsquod check in at Indiantown gallop horses in my fatigues and riding boots and be back at the fort in time for lunchrdquo

His connections on the racetrack helped him sell Thoroughbred mares for polo mounts after he learned to play for the Lancaster team He added jockey agent to his resume when he took on leading rider Bill Nemetirsquos book at Penn in the 1970s In 1985 he was training horses at the old three-quarter-mile oval Commodore Downs in Erie Pa He finished third in the standings before he packed up his travel trailer and his horses and moved back to Penn Nation-al where Becky was handling the rest of the stable

ldquoI bought my first farm in Reading Pennsylvania when I was 25 years old but I never really got serious about it until I met Becky a year laterrdquo he said ldquoMy wife is pretty amazing When I am home I just

try to stay out of her wayrdquo At 17 Becky was already an accom-p l i s h e d horsewoman involved in 4-H and pony club She

took over the chores of mucking stalls rid-ing horses and teaching ldquoThen it was lsquooff to the racesrsquordquo said Glenn ldquoWe turned the 10-acre farm into a business giving pony rides and running a lesson program One day she even came home with a carriage and taught herself how to drive and we got into doing weddings When I took her to the racetrack she began shed-rowing horses and soon could gallop the toughest ones She even went to California to learn about equine reproduction She is the quickest learner Irsquove ever met She says lsquothere is no time for sleep ndash you can sleep when you are deadrsquordquo

It is hard to believe Glenn and Becky sleep at all Ten years ago Becky told Glenn that they needed to buy a bigger farm ldquoI donrsquot know if you can say thisrdquo she said ldquoBut Reading became a different place than when we lived on the farm in earlier years The real reason I wanted to move was because of all the uninvited characters that would stop in front of our farm which was on a dead end road Guys would be out there stripping cars people were in our driveway and one time I had a tractor trailer drive up in the middle of the night and I had to go out and help the driver get it turned aroundrdquo The unsavory characters lack of privacy and need for more space for the ex-panding business led to the purchase of the Mohrsville property just six months later

Becky is the force behind channeling all the couplersquos energy into purchasing and running one of the most successful breed-ing farms in the Commonwealth that they named Diamond B Farm ldquoHe said the lsquoBrsquo is for Becky but I really think it is for Brokrdquo she said

As the Pennsylvania breeding program prospered additional land in Mohrsville al-lowed them to plan and lay out more pas-ture build a foaling barn and breeding shed ldquoWe were the flavor of the month at the time and had a lot of clients a lot of maresrdquo said Glenn ldquoWe carry a lot more of our own mares now itrsquos like Mares Anonymous because we still have our older ones too It is kind of like having our own retirement programrdquo

Meanwhile the Broks raised two daughters Sarah 26 works for Patti Mill-er a former leading trainer and currently vice-president of EQB which supplies per-formance evaluations for Thoroughbreds ldquofrom pre-auction to post-careerrdquo Younger daughter Samantha now 20 lives in Con-necticut and cares for Beckyrsquos Andalusian stallion and her own show horses Becky is her daughterrsquos groom at horse shows and raises Andalusians as her hobby at Diamond B When not working with the Thoroughbreds she still trail rides and does dressage

Most of Glennrsquos travels are to horse sales in the US for Brook Ledge Horse Transportation for whom he has been working nearly 40 years currently as their sales manager His job takes him all over the country to sales with his own horses and for clients ldquoA former friend from high school ended up marrying into the Gotwals family who owns Brook Ledgerdquo he said ldquoBrook Ledge was mostly shipping Standardbreds at the time The owner Brad Gotwals inter-viewed me and said I was the guy who could take them into the Thoroughbred businessrdquo

Glenn recently returned from a different kind of trip One of his Saudi clients want-ed to visit Dubai and Meydan Racecourse the home of the worldrsquos richest race the $10 million Dubai World Cup ldquoWhat theyrsquove done in 13 years is amazingrdquo said Glenn ldquoThey have turned the desert into Las Vegas Meydan should be one of the Wonders of the World It is just beauti-ful There are waterways that used to be sand great hotels and a racetrack The track was closed at the time since racing doesnrsquot begin until October due to 120 degree temperatures during the Dubai sum-mersrdquo he said

Whether Glenn is on the road or at home Becky happily handles all things farm related and is content to skip the travelling unless

it is vacation time ldquoTo relax we do like to go to tropical spots We recently went to the California coast and have done camping trips with the horsesrdquo

With sales season upon them Becky will be on the farm for the next few m o n t h s o v e r -s e e i n g a small w o r k crew as she pre-p a r e s the 2015 yearlings for late summer and fall

sales and begins working with the wean-lings ldquoWe maximize our employee numbers during foaling season but right now I have four or five people Since we breed all of our own horses to sell I begin working with them as weanlings where they learn to stand and

walk correctly If you teach them as young-sters they never forget and it becomes nat-ural to themrdquo

She also handles all five stallions during breeding and at the Diamond B Open House and Stallion shows that they host in the spring and fall

Talent Search was Diamond Brsquos first stallion and was bred and owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey Becky describes him as a ldquocool guy no hassle and he is smart and easy to handlerdquo A winner of over $600000 with a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Breedersrsquo Cup Sprint the son of Catienus stood his first season in Pennsylvania in 2010 ndash the Ram-seyrsquos fully supporting their multiple graded stakes-placed runner by sending 20 of their own mares to the Broks that year ldquoAll of the mares were in foal to Kittenrsquos Joy at the time and dropped their babies here in Pennsyl-vania Talent Searchrsquos first foals are 4-year-olds this yearrdquo said Glenn

Uptowncharlybrown broke his maiden by nine lengths in his first start and was consid-ered a Belmont Stakes candidate by trainer Alan Seewald who would not live to see his coltrsquos disqualification from fifth to last in the third leg of the Triple Crown due to losing a

ldquoThe partners are very loyal to their horse and are a great group of owners They are definitely living the dream of owning their own horses as the partnership gives a regu-lar person all the perks of being an owner for a very nominal fee And now they are seeing their racehorse become a sire and they can be involved in the future of his foalsrdquo said Glenn

Managing partner Bob Hutt says the Broks are an integral part of Fantasy Lane Stablersquos success ldquoThey are the salt of the

earth and just great peoplerdquo he said ldquoWe also send them all of our turnouts and totally entrust the care of our horses to themrdquo

A precocious 2-year-old and son of Distorted Humor Got the Last Laugh dead-heated for his win in the 2006 Arling-ton Washington Breedersrsquo Cup Futurity-G3 in his second career start With two small crops to race including two maiden debut winners his foals ldquorun and runrdquo said Becky ldquoThey always put out a good effortrdquo

Mad Flatter was the back-to-back win-ner of the Grade 3 Spend a Buck Stakes in 2010 and 2011 and has three yearlings in his first crop scheduled to sell in Ocala with the rest heading to Timonium ldquoMad Flatter thinks he is tough and his foals are just like himrdquo said Becky ldquoHis yearlings are indepen-dent and donrsquot always care about following their mothers aroundrdquo

Senor Swinger is a 15-year-old son of El Prado (Ire) owned by HartleyDeRenzo and Partners PA Venture A multiple graded stakes winner he will retire from stud duty this year and live out his life at Michael Blow-enrsquos Old Friends farm in Kentucky leaving an

empty stall at Diamond B ldquoHe was a nice horse a great racehorse but is getting up there in years and just didnrsquot get enough maresrdquo said Glenn ldquoHe deserves a good retirement which he will have at Old Friendsrdquo

Now in his 60s Glenn Brok seems far from ready to retire Described by co-worker Andrea Gotwals Boone at Brook Ledge as a lsquofunny guy full of life and 30 years younger than his actual agersquo it is difficult to imagine Brok taking any kind of breather between his trips In August his agenda includes a trip to the Saratoga sales and then home by the end of the month to play host to the three-day open house at Diamond B Then he is off to the Ocala sales with the Mad Hatter foals fol-lowed by sales at Keeneland Timonium and Louisiana in September for Brook Ledge

The Diamond B breeding operation un-der the name Glenn E Brok LLC was among the leading PA-breeders this year with over $68000 in awards through June With four young stallions and the search to replace the newly-retired Senor Swinger Glenn and Becky Brok would probably agree that this is no time to put on the brakes a

Pennsylvaniarsquos Day At the Races Five $100K Stakes On Schedule

The 15th annual Pennsylvaniarsquos Day At the Races ndash a celebration exclusively for state-Bred runners ndash is set for Satur day Sept 5 at Parx ldquoPennsylvaniarsquos Day at the Races will be held at PARX during its inaugural Fall Festivalrdquo said PHBA Executive Secretary Brian Sanfratello ldquoPurses for the day should surpass $800000 featuring five $100000 stakesrdquo

The five stakes offer a range of op-portunities going short and long on the turf and main track ldquoThe quality of our PA-Breds con-tinues to increase and this year is no exceptionrdquo stated PHBA President Rog-er Legg

Early nomina-tions were due by July 18 a second nomination deadline is Aug 22

ldquoOur annual celebration is a special combination of great racing great idea sharing and great food and gifts for allrdquo said Greg Newell chairman of the PA Day racing committee

Upon opening again on the 29th the feature race that day will be the Grade 3 Smarty Jones Stakes The race is the trackrsquos local prep for the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby In recent years the Smarty Jones had been run on Labor Day but was moved up this year to enable the horses competing to have ample time between races if they want to consider the Derby as their next option The PA Derby this year is set for Saturday Sept 19 which would have left the Smarty Jones runners just 12 days between races if the date had not been changed

During the shutdown simulcast racing will not be affected The track will continue to offer its full slate of racing from around the country seven days a week

The Lemon Drop Kid colt bred by Everest Stables Inc and pur-chased by owner Chad Schumer for $100000 out of the Keeneland April 2-year-old sale in 2014 placed in both his starts at 2 and was sent off as favorite in his first start at 3 a maiden special weight at Gulf stream Park But he ducked in at the start and lost his rider

Diamond B Farm a jewel in Pennsylvania

Sharing a conversation with Glenn Brok of Diamond B Farm is nostalgic funny and entertaining but behind his stories there is a hardworking dedicated horseman husband and father He effortlessly skips from chap-ter to chapter in his life in which he has worn the hats and helmets of National Guardsman exercise rid-er jockey agent train-er polo player world traveler and horse breeder He and his wife Becky live on their farm in Mohrsville which is also home to five stallions a broodmare band weanlings and sales yearlings

Glenn has always loved racing and has honed the fine art of juggling responsibilities in order to be involved in the sport When he was younger he was a member of the National Guard ndash his time there including a mandatory two-week summer camp ldquoI convinced my sergeant to let me spend the camp time at an installation called Fort In-diantown Gap in Lebanon Pa rather than in Norfolk Va I could be near Penn National and continue galloping horses Irsquod check in at Indiantown gallop horses in my fatigues and riding boots and be back at the fort in time for lunchrdquo

His connections on the racetrack helped him sell Thoroughbred mares for polo mounts after he learned to play for the Lancaster team He added jockey agent to his resume when he took on leading rider Bill Nemetirsquos book at Penn in the 1970s In 1985 he was training horses at the old three-quarter-mile oval Commodore Downs in Erie Pa He finished third in the standings before he packed up his travel trailer and his horses and moved back to Penn Nation-al where Becky was handling the rest of the stable

ldquoI bought my first farm in Reading Pennsylvania when I was 25 years old but I never really got serious about it until I met Becky a year laterrdquo he said ldquoMy wife is pretty amazing When I am home I just

try to stay out of her wayrdquo At 17 Becky was already an accom-p l i s h e d horsewoman involved in 4-H and pony club She

took over the chores of mucking stalls rid-ing horses and teaching ldquoThen it was lsquooff to the racesrsquordquo said Glenn ldquoWe turned the 10-acre farm into a business giving pony rides and running a lesson program One day she even came home with a carriage and taught herself how to drive and we got into doing weddings When I took her to the racetrack she began shed-rowing horses and soon could gallop the toughest ones She even went to California to learn about equine reproduction She is the quickest learner Irsquove ever met She says lsquothere is no time for sleep ndash you can sleep when you are deadrsquordquo

It is hard to believe Glenn and Becky sleep at all Ten years ago Becky told Glenn that they needed to buy a bigger farm ldquoI donrsquot know if you can say thisrdquo she said ldquoBut Reading became a different place than when we lived on the farm in earlier years The real reason I wanted to move was because of all the uninvited characters that would stop in front of our farm which was on a dead end road Guys would be out there stripping cars people were in our driveway and one time I had a tractor trailer drive up in the middle of the night and I had to go out and help the driver get it turned aroundrdquo The unsavory characters lack of privacy and need for more space for the ex-panding business led to the purchase of the Mohrsville property just six months later

Becky is the force behind channeling all the couplersquos energy into purchasing and running one of the most successful breed-ing farms in the Commonwealth that they named Diamond B Farm ldquoHe said the lsquoBrsquo is for Becky but I really think it is for Brokrdquo she said

As the Pennsylvania breeding program prospered additional land in Mohrsville al-lowed them to plan and lay out more pas-ture build a foaling barn and breeding shed ldquoWe were the flavor of the month at the time and had a lot of clients a lot of maresrdquo said Glenn ldquoWe carry a lot more of our own mares now itrsquos like Mares Anonymous because we still have our older ones too It is kind of like having our own retirement programrdquo

Meanwhile the Broks raised two daughters Sarah 26 works for Patti Mill-er a former leading trainer and currently vice-president of EQB which supplies per-formance evaluations for Thoroughbreds ldquofrom pre-auction to post-careerrdquo Younger daughter Samantha now 20 lives in Con-necticut and cares for Beckyrsquos Andalusian stallion and her own show horses Becky is her daughterrsquos groom at horse shows and raises Andalusians as her hobby at Diamond B When not working with the Thoroughbreds she still trail rides and does dressage

Most of Glennrsquos travels are to horse sales in the US for Brook Ledge Horse Transportation for whom he has been working nearly 40 years currently as their sales manager His job takes him all over the country to sales with his own horses and for clients ldquoA former friend from high school ended up marrying into the Gotwals family who owns Brook Ledgerdquo he said ldquoBrook Ledge was mostly shipping Standardbreds at the time The owner Brad Gotwals inter-viewed me and said I was the guy who could take them into the Thoroughbred businessrdquo
