Primary Oil Immersions Applications

• Hematopathology, Microbiology, Cytology Applications• Blood Smears, Bone Marrow Smears, Gram Stains, ...

• Oil Immersion Digital Slide Scanning

Oil Immersion ApplicationsBlood films:

• Representative areas in blood films can be scanned for full diagnostic workup.

• Resolution is sufficient to rule out abnormalities in:

• White blood cells

• Appreciate chromatin structure and identify nucleoli for accurate blast counts

• Distinguish all white cell precursors for an accurate differential count

• Red blood cells

• Spectrum of morphological changes including :

• Hypochromia / blisters, bites, acanthocytes, echinocytes, sickle cells and other schistocyte forms

• Inclusions down to the size of 1 to 2 microns such as Howell-Jolly, Pappenheimer bodies & malarial parasites

• Platelets

Oil Immersion ApplicationsMicrobiology

• Infectious organisms down to the one or two micron level for : • speciation of malarial parasites in red cells, • identifying Leishmania spp. in histocytes from tissue sections, fungal forms such as Aspergillosis and

Candida.

• EXAMPLE: Leishmania amastigotes in tissue sections:

Cytology:

• Powerful technique for capturing the fine cytological details in fine needle aspiration cytology.

• For example the fine nuclear features of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid such as the powdery chromatin, intranuclear pseudo-inclusions, micronucleoli and linear nuclear ridges ("grooves").

• EXAMPLE: Papillary carcinoma of the thyroid:
