“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” Was Benjamin
Franklin a quilter? His proclamation could certainly apply to quilting. I enjoy listening to
our guest speakers, and I always hear something that I find interesting. I should take
notes to help remember those interesting tidbits. I look forward to going to Sit ‘N’
Stitch workshops where I pick up handy tips. Put into action, I have a good chance at
remembering them. Finally, I really love our February sewing day because being sur-
rounded by so many seasoned quilters, with their collective wealth of experience; it’s
impossible not to learn more about our craft as well as learn more about one another.
The act of gathering together for a common cause – creating quilts to distribute to those
in need of comfort – is a longstanding tradition amongst quilters. I hope to see a lot of
eager quilters at the February meeting…becoming and staying involved with the Guild is
the best way to learn. And one thing I’ve learned is that a wonderful way to spend a win-
ter day is with friends, quilting.

The Sew Day is Coming!!
The Sew Day is Coming!!

Remember the charity sew day? Well, it's coming. Just around the corner. Bring your sewing ma-
chine, basic sewing supplies, and good humor. I will have a pot load of things to sew. It will be a bit
different this year. I will be bringing about 40 quilts that will need binding. Yes, I've been fooling
around on my long arm... Done on the machine, these should go really fast. I also have perhaps 25
small quilts to be quilted. These can be pillow-cased and quilted in nothing flat. Oh. Did I men-
tion you should bring your walking foot?
And then of course I'll bring a truck load of kits for piecing. If you have any kits in your workroom
that haven't been finished, please bring them and get that project out of your hair. There's no rule
you have to take a NEW kit to sew on.
Your board will be bringing soups and salads for lunch. I suspect there will be some snack type stuff
as well. We have to be out of the church by 3:00 so plan on staying until mid afternoon. And yes,
there will be door prizes throughout the day.....

Pat is a nationally known speaker and author specializ-
ing in charm square quilt designs. Don't miss this very popular speaker, she
will entertain and inspire you.
Pat Speth Workshop - Shaded Four Patch.
The workshop will be on Wednesday, March 2nd at our regular meeting
room at the Olathe Bible Church, from 9-3. There are a few spots left; if

Exploring New Territory with Seminole Strips will be presented by Marge
Banks. Marge is a art quilter from Lawrence and has developed tech-
niques based on Seminole Patchwork. She assembles the traditional
patterns in non-traditional ways using non-traditional fabrics – rich
batiks. Her background of sewing since she was a child and her colle-
giate studio work in painting prompted her to “paint with fabric.”

Kansas City Star Qui l ts
Not that I don’t have enough to do, but I was looking forward to the Sunday paper this last weekend. Janu-
ary always meant a new quilt and this year I was hoping for a quilt that I would like and I would make one
block at a time. My mom has collected the quilt blocks from the Kansas City Star for years. In the most
recent history, the quilt block was in the paper on the third Sunday of the month.
Imagine my disappointment when I didn’t find the quilt block. So I waited until Monday so that I could call.
No less than five phone calls and talking to as many representatives, I finally got an answer. I spoke with
Kathy Lu, who is the Features Editor. When I asked about the quilt block, she responded “we didn’t know
how many people were really interested,” so the paper has decided not to publish the Star Quilt. From
what she told me, it sounds like this is a permanent decision. There were also staff issues involved in the
decision.
I was also told that I was the first and only person that had called to ask about the quilt. Surely, my mom
and I are not the only ones that were interested in the Star Quilt. If you would like to call and voice your
disappointment about their decision, call 816-234-4900. Ask to speak to Kathy Lu, Features Editor or Cin-
dy Gregorian, House and Home Editor. Please pass this information on to anyone that you think would
like to see the Star reverse their decision.

The Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival is announcing a Challenge for the 2017 Festival. We
will be picking 2 quilts to showcase in the plexi-glass entryway. Round up your quilting bud-
dies, or just yourself, and show us what your creative minds can do! Here are the require-
ments.......
1. Must be 83 x 83 inches to fit in the prefabricated plexi-glass display for the entry/archway
into the show—no wiggle room!
2. The quilt has to include and be limited to the colors in the KCRQF logo----lime/bright
green, sunshine yellow, white, black, royal blue, raspberry - look to the logo for a more ac-
curate depiction of those color values/tonalities. Ask your KCRQF Rep for examples or go
to www.kcrqf.com
3. Must have a hanging sleeve & label.
4. Will be due the beginning April of 2017 (the showcase committee will finalize this date)
5. Who can enter? Must be a member of a KCRQF Participating Guild - can be completed by
an individual member or a group of members.
6. Theme/technique/style - open to the artist, just needs to be bright!
7. Hope to have 2 in the plexi-glass and then "non-winners" in a Special Collection viewing
area.
8. There will be a prize - a voucher to shop the vendors.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS
Sewing With Friends Sew Days at Lansing, Kansas
Sewing With Friends is held in Lansing, Kansas. Approximately 50 ladies attend. It is hosted by 3 sisters and
has been operating for over 4 years. It is a time to bring your sewing projects and sew, socialize, and eat
with new and current friends. We hope you will join us for our upcoming sew days.
Location: Lansing Community Center, 800 First Terrace, Lansing, KS 66043. This is a smoke free venue.
Dates for 2016: January 16th, March 19th, June 4th, July 30th. Two additional dates will be added when
scheduled.
Cost: $15 per person (please pay in cash); covers the disposable plates/cups/silverware and rental cost of
the facility.
Time: Sew Day will run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Cleanup: Each person is responsible for cleaning up after themselves. This includes sweeping around your
work stations before you leave, cleaning up after yourself if you use the kitchen, and keeping the cutting and
ironing stations clean as you use them.
Food: Lunch and dinner are potluck. Participation is optional. Please bring your own serving utensils, prep
items and dishes, if needed. We have some kitchen utensils/knifes and pans. You are always welcome to
bring in food/drinks or leave to go get anything you would like to have for yourself.
Drinks: There is an ice machine in the kitchen. You should plan to bring your own drink if you want some-
thing other than water, coffee or iced tea. We currently have a Keurig personal coffee maker that everyone
can use. You have the option to bring the drink pods of your choice or use what is on hand. We ask that
you contribute to purchasing the pods if you use the ones provided.
Items provided for your convenience: Cutting stations and Ironing stations will be provided. Due to
concerns about blowing fuses, raised by the facility, please do not use personal irons. Paper products in-
cluding cups (hot and cold), plates, bowls, napkins and silverware will be provided.
Extension Cords/Power Strips: Some extension cords will be available but participants/groups are re-
sponsible for bringing their own heavy duty extension cords and suitable power strips with surge protection.
About the Venue: Tables and chairs will be set up and torn down by the venue. Tables at the venue are 6
feet in length. Round tables towards the middle of the room will be available for eating space and laying out
your projects. This space can easily and comfortably hold 60+ sewers and their machines.
You are welcome to bring what you need to be comfortable during sew day. (i.e. your own chair, an addi-
tional sewing/side table, seat cushion,...) The Community Center has a nice kitchen with a refrigera-
tor, stove, microwave and ice maker.

Sit & Stitch Workshops Sit & Stitch meets regularly on the 2nd & 4th Thursdays of each month at Rose Estates, 127th & Antioch. Come any time after 9:30 with workshops starting promptly at 10 AM. Bring your lunch and be ready to socialize and learn a new technique or pattern. Ques-tions concerning any of the following work-shops can be directed to Wilma Lamfers, [email protected].
It's "pay it forward month" in February
during the Sit & Stitch days.
We will be constructing "muff" lap quilts to be given to Rose Estates
residents. We will be using flannel and fleece and our goal will be to use all of the fabrics that we now have in our stash. We'll meet two
Thursday's, February 11th & 25th. Thanks to Edith Stanish for her time spent in getting this project ready to go.
Thursday, March 10th Chelly King will lead another workshop on a Bargello wall hanging. This workshop is full.
Thursday, March 28th, Libby Rollert and Sandi Magliacano will lead a Sit & Stitch workshop on a very neat sewing bag. See the sample at the Sit & Stitch
table. You may signup, pay your $5 fee and receive a supply list at the February meeting.

The meeting was called to order by President Stephanie Dodson at 9:30 am. Guest and members were wel-
comed.
MINUTES/TREASURER'S REPORT
Motions were made and seconded and approved to accept the Nov. secretary and treasurer’s report as pub-
lished in the January newsletter.
PROGRAMS
Julie Rounds reviewed the programs. Today's program will be Mary Honas, Quilting on your home machine.
Feb. Charity Quilt Day, Mar. Pat Speth, Five Inch is a Cinch followed by a workshop on Weds. March 2 from 9-
3. Location to be determined. Watch for more details in the program section of the newsletter.
NEWSLETTER DEADLINE FOR THE FEBRUARY is JANUARY 15th. A copy to Joan Horton and

PDQ/SIT N STITCH
Wilma Lamfers for PDQ and Sit n Stitch reviewed the schedule of events for Jan. through March. She an-
nounced a Panel Challenge that will run Jan. to July 1st with prizes awarded for completed projects. Check the
newsletter for details.
CHARM SQ EXCHANGE for Feb. is 30's fabric. See newsletter for the remaining months. Susan also asked
that your name be on the bag (s) and to of set each set of 2 for ease of distribution.
HOSPITALITY/BIRTHDAYS
The January birthdays were acknowledged and thanked for their shared treats.
LIBRARY
There will be no library in February.
KCRQF
Lynne Droege reported the Festival was seeking Quilts for the entering display case. It is to be 83 x 83 and fes-
tival colors. Those shown on Festival advertising. Can be any style and is due April 1, 2017 for judging.
35th ANNIVERSARY
The December party was a HUGE success and thanks to all who worked to make it happen. The 35th Anniver-
sary shirts made with the Guild emblem on the front (small) and special anniversary logo on the back done in
teal will be available at a later date. There is an option to only have the guild emblem on front and nothing on
the back.
CHARITY SEW FEB. Board members are asked to to sign up bring soup, salad or bread to
share. Feb birthdays, dessert and any one can bring treats to share. We will sew until 2:30.
M.O.M.'S
Barbara announced the New Member's Tea for Feb. 16th 1:30-3 at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church,
11100 W College O.P. ( n w corner of Neiman and College). A sign-up sheet was made available.
MEMBERSHIP
It was announced that there were 125 members present and 3 visitors.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
T-Shirts: see Anniversary. Becky Robbins and her nominating committee will be asking for your help in filling
board positions. President and Treasurer have fulfilled their term limits. Other board members can remain in
their position if they chose. Please give this serious consideration if asked.
OLD BUSINESS The 3 boutique sales brought in $1,272 after taxes.
NEW BUSINESS: Bees, groups and individuals be thinking and planning the Opportunity quilt for 2017.

Yahoo Group settings
The best way for the guild members to communicate with the group as a whole is by using our Yahoo
Group: bluevalleyquiltersguild. This is a closed group, and you need to be a member of the guild to re-
ceive emails posted in the Yahoo Group.
How often you receive group emails is a setting you can change to meet your personal preference.
On the left side of the page, look for the link "Manage My Groups." Click on that link, and you should
see "bluevalleyquiltersguild." If you click on drop down menu under the heading "Mail Subscription,"
there are some options on how you’d like to receive the group’s messages.
Individual Emails No Email Special Notices Daily Digest
Keep in mind if you choose any option other than "Individual Emails" any time sensitive messages may be
received too late for you to take action. "Daily Digest" will provide you with a summary of all messages
posted the previous day. If you aren’t a member of the Yahoo Group, and would like to be added, con-

How to Participate in the Charm Squares Exchange
1. Please use only quilt store fabric. If you use batik fabric,
please pre-wash.
2. If you do more than 1 pack of charms, please put
each one in a separate baggie with your name on it.
3. Use the same material for each pack; if you do more
than 1, you can use a different fabric.
4. You can sign up at the guild meeting, Yahoo group
or e-mail me.
5. You have until the 15th of the month to sign up. After
that date, I will publish to the Yahoo Group how many
pairs you need and the amount of material you need to
buy.
If you need me to e-mail it to you, please indicate it on
the sign up sheet.

Quilts of Valor sewing day is the 4th Saturday of the month

Prairie Point Quilt Store; Starting in September join us
at Prairie Point on the third Tuesday of each month to
work on QOV quilts Time is 10-4. You can bring your
lunch or there are a lot of places around their shop to
eat. I am going to start something new this year. I am go-
ing to make up BOM kits. If you can't join us, come in and
pick up a kit or I will have some at the guild meeting. Make
the block and return it the next month. You can do this
every month or whenever you feel you have time to do a
block. The blocks will be very simple star patterns. They
are patterns designed by Jeanne Poore and are simple pat-
terns.. Just think how many quilts we could have at the

Carmel Apple Pie
9 “ unbaked pie crust—add 1 tsp cinnamon to
crust when making it
Pie filling:
6 to 7 cups peeled, sliced apples (I used Hon-
eycrisp— recipe called for Granny Smith
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup all purpose flour
1/4 tsp salt
Crumb Topping
1/2 cup flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup quick oats
1/4 tsp salt
12 tbsp. butter (1 1/2 sticks)
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/2 jar (or more) caramel topping
Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Prepare pie dough for 9” pie shell. Be sure to
crimp the edges of the dough around the edge
of the pan.
Prepare filling: Mix the apple slices, lemon juice,
sugar, flour and salt. Add to the prepared pie
shell
Prepare crumb topping: Mix flour, brown sugar,
oats and salt. Cut up the cold butter into little
pieces and then cut into the dry mixture with a
pastry cutter. Put the crumb topping over the
apples in the pie shell, covering them com-
pletely.
Bake pie for 1 hour at 375 degrees, covering
the edge of the crust with foil if it starts to
brown too quickly. Sprinkle the 1/2 cup pecans
over the top and bake 5 minutes longer.
Remove the pie from the oven and pour the
caramel topping over the top. Us as much cara-
mel as you like.
