Introduction : Patan
§ Patan district is located in northern Gujarat
§ The district headquarter - Patan was formerly known as
Anahilvada – Patan and was a thriving capital city of
Gujarat for more than 600 years.
§ The district is spread across seven talukas, viz. Santalpur,
Patan, Chanasma, Harij, Sami, Radhanpur and Sidhpur
§ Focus Industrial Sectors : food processing, paper and
pulp and cotton-based industry
§ The region is famous for Patola sarees. The Patan Patola
is one of the finest hand woven textile materials produced
the world over
§ Key raw materials such as cotton, fennel, isabgul, cowpea
are abundantly available in the district

Economy and Industry Profile§ Economy of Patan is mainly agrarian
§ Food processing, agriculture, and textiles are the major
vocational and industrial activities in Patan
§ Food processing has been the main sector for investment and
employment in Patan district since the late 1980s
§ The Food Processing Industry of Patan is well developed
because of the proximity to agricultural districts such as
Mehsana, Banaskantha etc
§ With the recent surge in investments in the oil and gas sector,
Patan is progressively shaping up into an attractive destination
for investors
§ Textile sector also contributes largely to the district economy.
Patan Patola is one of the finest hand woven textile materials
produced. Besides this, Mashru, a mixed fabric, woven with a
combination of cotton and silk is also traditionally produced in
Patan

§ Major food crops, oil seeds and fruits
produced in the district include wheat, bajri,
pulses, cereals, cotton, castor, rape, mustard,
citrus fruits, ber, guava, pomegranate, papaya,
etc
§ Vegetable crops such as potato, brinjal,
cabbage, cowpea, tomato, cauliflower and
cluster bean are cultivated in the district
§ 1,338,800 metric tonnes (MT) of cotton was
produced in the district during 2005-06
§ Citrus fruits have the largest share (47%)
in production among all the fruits produced in
the district

§ There are 4,641 small scale industries in Patan district
§ Vegetable & Vanaspati, paper & pulp industry and
food & processing industries are some of the major
industries operating in the small scale sector in the
district
§ Vegetables & Vanaspati sector has attracted
investments to the tune of INR 1269 lakhs (USD 3
mn) – highest among all the sectors (2006 -07)
§ Patan taluka hosts maximum number of industrial units
(1617) among all the talukas in the district

Chemicals and Fertilizers Infrastructure Projects
Vegetable Oils
§ Industrial sectors such as Chemicals, Vegetable Oils,
and infrastructure projects saw investments worth INR
1,345 crore (USD 328 mn) during the period 1998 -2007
§ The infrastructure projects, an important sector in the
district witnessed investments to the tune of INR 1320
crore (USD 314 mn) during 1998-2007
§ Other sectors such as petrochemicals, cement and
Gypsum have also been growing at a steady pace
§ During last over one decade - 1998–2007, the district
has witnessed investments growing as high as 900% as
compared to the previous decade (USD 30.9 mn during
1988-1997 and USD 328 mn during 1998-2007)

§ The Government of Gujarat has been playing a very active
role in promoting the state as a potential investment
destination through a series of Global Investors’ Summits
(VGGIS), organised every two years
§ A total of 18 MoUs aggregating INR 22,451 crore (USD 5.3
bn) of investments were signed for locations in Patan during
VGGIS 2007
§ Out of 18 MoUs, 12 MoUs worth INR 9,861 crore (USD 2
bn) were signed for investments in oil & gas and agro & food
processing sectors during the VGGIS 2007
§ The investment is proposed to create new employment
opportunities for 36,631 persons
§ Sectors such as oil and gas, agro and food processing,
tourism and civil aviation have attracted major investments in
the district

Economy Drivers§ The economy is mainly driven by agriculture and agro-based
products
§ Close proximity to the agro-food and biotech clusters of
Ahmedabad has opened up new avenues for the food processing
industries, research centres and educational institutes
§ Small scale industry sectors such as cotton based textiles, food
processing, paper & pulp industry and vegetable oils mills are the
supporting pillars of the district economy
§ Growth of infrastructure projects in the district has added more
jobs and increased opportunities for the masses

Water supply for industrial purposes in the district can be obtained from three main sources, viz Gujarat
Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB), an Irrigation Canal and Sardar Sarovar Project.

§ Patan is the headquarter for a northern Gujarat University -
Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University. The university offers
MBA and MCA courses
§ The district houses some of the renowned technical and law colleges
§ The district also has the provision for distance learning programs and
correspondence courses offered by various Study Centers under Open
University Scheme of Indian universities. These programs courses
such as MA, MSc, MBA, MCA, etc.
§ Law Colleges in Patan such as Sheth M. N. Law College offer law
education including civil , criminal, business and forensic law etc.
§ The Government Engineering College and K.D. Polytechnic College
at Patan offers courses in computer science, electronics &
communications and mechanical engineering with intake capacity of 180

Tourism§ Patan has various tourist attractions. The Queen's Step well or
Rani Ki Vav is one of the most magnificent step wells of Gujarat built during 11-12th century. A stepped corridor compartmented at regular intervals with pillared multi-storeyed pavilions is a unique feature. Sculptures of deities and other images adorn the walls flanking the staircase. Nearly four hundred niches on the walls display images.
§ The Sahastralinga Talav or tank of a thousand Shiva shrines is an exotic piece of art
§ The district has more than hundred Jain temples, among which theone dedicated to Panchasara Parasvanath is the largest and has intricate stone carvings and white marble floors that characterise Jain architecture
§ Patan is famous for Patola sarees. A single Patola sari generally takes 4 – 6 months to complete and involves a laborious process of dyeing the threads according to a pre-planned design and then weaving it. Today only two Savli families in Patan taluka practise this dextrous craft
