B. Is There a Fit? – Burns

1. Access to national R&E networks2. Multi-homed to Commodity, automatic fail over3. “Dialable” capacity in 1 Mbps increments

1. Takes ~1 hour to adjust capacity2. Summer savings

4. Intra-FRGP traffic1. “Free”2. Can burst to circuit capacity, e.g. 1 Gbps3. High quality (e.g. video conferencing, multimedia work)

5. Community membership and evolution toward Next Generation Optical Networking

1. Some circuits can be shared, lowering costs and increasing capacity

2. A way for us to make progress, on NGN as a state

Single-circuit Connectivity & Pricing

Qwest pricing looks attractive, on the surface, but: Capacity is not shared A site must order sufficient capacity to burst to its maximum

rate, or limit functionality

Consider pricing for shared circuits/services EC BOCES at 1 Gbps through SCONE, Commodity only

EC BOCES includes 17 rural school districts SCONE total aggregate connectivity at 30 Mbps We advertised $100-$150/Mbps-mo (FRGP ‘raw’ pricing) Instead, via aggregation, EC BOCES pricing averages closer to

$15/Mbps-mo – see slide on next page

UPOP pricing should be examined in this light

Basic Architecture

Gigabit Ethernet from Denver to PuebloMultiple VLANs, one for each site

Most efficient use of fiber Very cost effective

Pueblo-Denver Backup circuit via Level3 Metro Ethernet Service Currently capped at 100 Mbps Automatic Fail-over

Management and Operations

Monitored and Managed by CSU NOC Most end sites do their own monitoring/alerting

“Best effort” supportRely upon “local” staff in some situations

Remote hands support, diagnostics, equipment swaps
