PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Since the first of the year I have been writing about the symbols and use of our church
building, our parish home. The building itself gives witness to those who drive up and down Cypresswood that God dwells in this space. It is both God’s dwelling on earth (domus Dei) as well as the house where God’s people gather for prayer (domus ecclesiae). The US Bishops’ Document, Built of Living Stones: Art, Architecture, and Worship, as well as the General Introduction to the Roman Missal, give specific directions as to how a church is to be built. Both documents dive deeper than the praxis taking us into the theology and meaning and understand of placement and objects used. If you have missed any of the last Pastor’s Columns you can access them on our website, www.silcc.org.
Besides the nave where we gather for Liturgy on the weekends, the Reservation Chapel where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved for prayer as well as for Holy Communion to be taken to the sick, and the Chapels of Reconciliation, we have yet another chapel that is used for public worship. As you enter the church through the main doors, to your left in the narthex is The Lady Chapel. This Chapel, which seats approximately 200 people, is used for daily Mass, small weddings and funerals, and the children’s Liturgy of the Word on Sundays. It is dedicated to our Blessed Mother and as such contains three different images of our Lady. When one enters the chapel it is obvious that the primary symbols are altar, ambo, presider’s chair and crucifix, similar to the “big church” (as the children call it). Above the altar area is located a stained glass window depicting our Lady with her Son, Jesus. They both are in a stance that welcomes all into the space for prayer and reflection. On either side of the altar area are two shrines, both to the Blessed Mother. To the left of the altar is the shrine to Our Lady of Fatima. Because the children related that the apparition specifically identified herself as the "Lady of the Rosary", she is also commonly referred to as a combination of titles, i.e. Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima. It is very common to find people kneeling before her image praying the rosary in The Lady Chapel. To the right side of the altar area is another shrine to Our Lady, commonly referred to as the Pieta, it depicts the sorrowful Virgin holding the limp body of her dead Son. This image was originally hanging in our first church building (now the Chrisus Center). We discovered a couple of years ago stored in a box in the maintenance garage. Because of its history with the community as well as the number of funerals that take place in The Lady Chapel, it was decided to place it there as a reminder of the pain and suffering of Our Lady as she lost her only Son to death. Around the walls of The Lady Chapel are the Stations of the Cross that once hung in the original church building. The cross that hangs in the chapel just behind the altar and the statue of St. Ignatius Loyola at the entrance of the chapel are also from the original church. Thus, The Lady Chapel becomes a link to our past, reminding us from where we came as a parish community. But it also shows the continuity of our life of faith. We have grown as a community of faith on the foundation of the past. We did not start “new” with the building of our church, rather we built upon the hopes, dreams and prayers of our founding families. That cross in The Lady Chapel is also the cross we use on Good Friday as we celebrate the Liturgy of the Veneration of the Cross. Behold the wood of the cross on which hung the salvation of the world….come, let us adore! And there it rests as a summation of our faith as people place their joys, fears, struggles and life before the Lord.
Indeed, we are very blessed as a community to have such a home to gather for prayer. On Sunday, February 23rd, we would have celebrated the 17th anniversary of the dedication of our church. However, due to the rededication after Hurricane Harvey, we no longer celebrate that day as our anniversary. Rather, it is now May 31st. When the liturgical calendar allows us to transfer the anniversary to a Sunday, it is celebrated as a Solemnity within the community. That will be very rare for us due to the Easter Season. But who knows? One year it may be possible. Blessings and peace,

THIS WEEK’S READINGS THIS WEEK’S READING
Sunday, Feb 23, 2020 SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME See clearly beyond racism How do we fight the popular recommendation to circle the wagons around “our stuff” or, worse, “our kind”? In their 1979 pastoral on racism, our bishops noted: “Racism is not merely one sin among many; it is a radical evil that divides the human family and denies the new creation of a redeemed world. To struggle against it demands an equally radical transformation, in our own minds and hearts as well as in the structure of our society.” Racism affects everything: immigration, education, economics, zoning laws, healthcare, and criminal justice. Pray to see the color of your values.
TODAY'S READINGS: Leviticus 19:1-2, 17-18; 1 Corinthians 3:16-23; Matthew 5:38-48 (79). “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God.”
Monday, Feb 24, 2020 Let your doubt strengthen your faith Faith is a gift that invites us to believe in that which cannot be seen with our eyes, only our hearts. So it is not unusual to experience some doubts along life’s way. A sudden death, a violent crime, or nothing you can pinpoint can trigger doubts. When doubts arise, do not be afraid. Do not run from the questions but trust that facing them can lead you to a deeper faith. When darkness clouds what you once took for granted, speak honestly to God even if you doubt God is listening, read God’s word in scripture for each day, and beg the unseen God to increase your faith, as the Catechism puts it.
TODAY'S READINGS: James 3:13-18; Mark 9:14-29 (341). “I do believe! Help my unbelief.”
Tuesday, Feb 25, 2020 [MARDI GRAS] Time to resolve our differences Traditionally today was a day to finish off all the rich and fattening foods in the household, including meats, which were given up for Lent. Thus the origins of the term Mardi Gras (“Fat Tuesday” in French), and the word carnival might be derived from the Latin for “removing or taking away meat.” The excesses of some modern-day celebrations of the Carnival season, however, have obscured its connection with Lent. The tension between celebration and fast is nothing new. In 1559, the Dutch master Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted The Fight Between Carnival and Lent, contrasting scenes of raucous celebration on one side of the painting and solemn religious observance on the other. How do you resolve the tension of excess in your own life?
TODAY'S READINGS: James 4:1-10; Mark 9:30-37 (342). “Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you.”
Wednesday, Feb 26, 2020 ASH WEDNESDAY; DAY OF FAST AND ABSTINENCE When we do without, we grow within Is there any spiritual practice more tied to Lent than fasting? Forgoing creature comforts is the biblical way to express our sorrow for sin. It’s a sacrifice that reminds us of what Jesus sacrificed. It also has the knack of clearing the clutter from our hearts so that our minds can focus on prayer. Make the most
of your fasting this Lent by taking some advice from Saint Peter Chrysologus: “Fasting is the soul of prayer, mercy is the lifeblood of fasting. So if you pray, fast; if you fast, show mercy; if you want your petition to be heard, hear the petition of others. If you do not close your ear to others, you open God’s ear to yourself.”
TODAY'S READINGS: Joel 2:12-18; 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2; Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18 (219). “Return to me with your whole heart, with fasting.”
Thursday, Feb 27, 2020 THURSDAY AFTER ASH WEDNESDAY Set your intention “Well begun is half done,” quipped the eminently practical Benjamin Franklin. Today is a great day to get into the spirit of Lent, if Ash Wednesday didn’t fully accomplish that for you for whatever reason. We have a rare opportunity to slow down and quiet our lives for the next few weeks. What is complicating life right now that you can simplify? How about giving up stress and fasting from complications this Lent as part of your spiritual practice? Turn Lent into a positive experience of drawing ever closer to Jesus, the source of life, light, and love in your life.
TODAY'S READINGS: Deuteronomy 30:15-20; Luke 9:22-25 (220). “I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, then.”
Friday, Feb 28, 2020 FRIDAY AFTER ASH WEDNESDAY; DAY OF ABSTINENCE Think fast Catholics abstain from meat on all Fridays during Lent for many reasons. It is a sacrifice—a reminder of Christ’s sacrifice on Good Friday. It is an act of humility as we eat modestly. It is an experience of solidarity with those who go without. It is penance for our past wrongdoings and an exercise in discipline to help us abstain from sin in the future. It is a form of preparation as we hunger, symbolically, for the eucharistic meal. Jesus fasted to draw closer to God and draw upon him for help. Now’s your chance to do the same.
TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 58:1-9a; Matthew 9:14-15 (221). “The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.”
Saturday, Feb 29, 2020 SATURDAY AFTER ASH WEDNESDAY Take a leap of faith It's nice to know that the leap year has a historical connection to the Catholic Church. In 1582, Pope Gregory introduced the Gregorian calendar, still in use in much of the world today. The calendar corrected the former Julian calendar by providing a more accurate calculation of the year with the addition of an extra day every four years so that the calendar did not drift too far away from the actual movement of the earth around the sun. Let’s give a special nod to Pope Gregory today for keeping us on track as we work to stay on course with our Lenten promises.
TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 58:9b-14; Luke 5:27-32 (222). “If you call the sabbath a delight, and the LORD’s holy day honorable . . . then you shall delight in the LORD.”’

GUIDELINES FOR LENTEN OBSERVANCES
Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. Ash Wednesday (February 26) and Good Friday (April 19)
are days of fast and abstinence.
Fasting binds all persons ages 18-59 unless prevented by poor health. On days of fast, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s own needs. Eating between meals is not allowed although fluids may be taken.
Abstinence binds all persons who are 14 or older, unless prevented by poor health. On days of abstinence, the consumption of meat is not allowed. The Church strongly encourages the observance of Friday abstinence, but failure to do so is not regarded as sinful. However, pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance.
Lent is a penitential season and as such religious practice such as daily Mass, reception of the Sacrament of Penance, the devotion of the Stations of the Cross and other forms of daily prayer
and reflection, works of charity and justice, and acts of self-denial are highly encouraged.

SAINTS OF THE MONTH
Elisabeth & Felix Leseur
Elisabeth Leseur had two great loves:
God and her husband Felix, who was
an atheist. After her death, Felix
published this book “The Secret Diary
of Elisabeth Leseur” that shows how
her goodness changed him from
Atheist to Priest. This inspiring book
also gives a splendid example of how
to live as a Christian in a secular
environment that can be indifferent or
hostile to your Faith.
Lent is a gift of time to us. Each year the church invites us to slow down,
to take time during this season.
Our next Family Catechesis event will help families reflect on Lent and
decide together on what they will do differently to observe this season of
the liturgical year.
Family Catechesis takes place on
• Sunday, February 23 at 3:30 p.m. in the Christus Center
• Tuesday, March 3 at 4:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in Sexton Hall

PARISH WIDE EVENT HIGHLIGHT PARISH WIDE EVENT HIGHLIGHT
