FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 2, 2018 PRIMER DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO DICIEMBRE 2, 2018

THIS WEEK IN THE LITURGY, WE CELEBRATE: ***St. Francis Xavier ( December, 3rd). He was born in a castle in Spain in 1506 an attended the University of Par-is (the leading institution of higher learning of the day). There he experienced a profound change in his life when he met another student, Ignatius of Loyola. At first, Francis thought Ignatius was strange. An ex-soldier, Ignatius chal-lenged others to take Christianity more seriously than they ever had before. On time, he invited Francis and five other young men to form a new religious order, the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). Shortly after Francis was ordained a priest, he began his life’s work of bringing the Gospel to the Far East. Even though he often got seasick and had diffi-culty leaning other languages, he eventually taught and baptized people in India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Japan. Francis refused any comforts that weren't available to the people he served. He often slept on the ground and lived on rice and water. Despite his noble birth, he never allowed himself to be waited on by servants. He was al-ways gentle, courteous and living with people. For years, he dreamed of working in China. At age 46, he finally boarded a ship bound for the city of Canton. But he caught a fever and the frightened sailors left him on an island near the mainland, where he died.

***St. John Damascene (c. 676 - c.749) lived during the time of the Iconoclast Movement. They were people who believed that venerating icons (stylized painted or mosaic pictures of Jesus, Mary, the saints and scenes from the Bible) was the same as worshipping idols. Thy actually went around defacing icons (the word “iconoclast” means “image-breaker”). John helped correct their mistaken ideas about icons. He is called “Damascene” because he was born in Damascus (in modern-day-Syria). The city was ruled by Muslims. His father held the powerful post treasur-er to the caliph, even though he was a Christian. He repre-sented the other Christians of the city in the caliph’s court. John inherited the position and like hi father, was respected by everyone because he was humble and kind. He was a monk at the monastery of St Sabas near Jerusalem. He lived quietly, writing hymns and reflections. When the em-peror issued an order that all sacred images be destroyed, John wrote brilliant essays explaining the sacred images were not the same as idols. Christians, he taught, do not worship icons. Rather, looking at an icon helps one to en-ter into the mystery it depicts. John wrote beautiful poetry and songs, some of which we still sing in English, including the hymn “Let all mortal flesh keep silence” and the Easter carol. “Come, you faithful, raise the strain.”

***St. Nicholas (December 6th) is perhaps the most popular saint of all time. Thousands of churches are named after him and he seems to be portrayed by artists more than any other saint, with the exception of Mary. He was bishop of Myra in Asia Minor (modern-day-Turkey). Centuries after his death, his bones were brought to the city of Bari in Italy, where millions have come to his tomb to pray. According to a legend, when Nicolas was a baby and his parents brought him to church to be baptized, he jumped eagerly into the water.

When he grew up and was named bishop, he was known as the “Wonderworker.” He could heal the sick and calm storms. A story is told about a man who was so poor that he could no longer buy food for his family. He was going to sell his daughters into slavery so the family would not starve. Bishop Nicholas found out about them, so one night, he tossed three bags of gold through a window into the house where they were kept to ransom them. Thus, he is the patron of pawnbrokers (whose symbol is three bags of gold). In many places, families are visited on Nicholas’ feast day by someone dressed up like him; he is accompa-nied by a devil, who snorts and groans and rattles chains, Nicholas tells family members the things they have done wrong and encourages them to do better in the coming year. When he leaves, there is a feast. Tangerines are often eaten as a reminder of the gold he gave for the poor women. Candy canes are a reminder of his crosier, the shepherd’s staff that bishops carry. The name Santa Claus means St. Nicholas. In the 1800s, New York department stores began to hire men to dress up as St. Nicholas so that shoppers would come in to buy Christmas gifts. The writer Thomas Nast drew pictures of St. Nicholas, but he mixed up legends about the saint with myths about the Norse god, Thor. That’s why Santa Claus is shown traveling by rein-deer and living with elves at the North Pole. St Nicholas is patron of children, bankers, sailors, perfumers, brides, sin-gle women, travelers, fishermen, dock workers, brewers, poets and prisoners. He is also patron of Russia, Greece, and Sicily, Lorraine and Apulia in Italy.

***St. Ambrose (December 7th) was the feisty bishop of Milan in the 4th century who confronted emperors of Rome on a regular basis. His father was governor of Britain, Spain and Gaul. Ambrose studied in Rome, then joined the emperor’s service. Soon Ambrose himself was appointed governor of northern Italy and he moved to Milan. When people of the city gathered to select a new bishop, and ar-gument broke out about whom it should be. Ambrose, nev-er shy, stepped forward to calm the dispute. To his shock, he was promptly chosen bishop (in those days, many peo-ple were not baptized until they were settled in life). Within a week, Ambrose was baptized, ordained and made bishop! He immediately began an intense study of Scripture and theology. As bishop of Milan, Ambrose was very influential and he used his power to speak out against injustice. He convinced the warrior Maximus not to invade Italy; he con-vinced the Emperor Theodocious to do public penance for allowing soldiers to kill a number of innocent people. When he was pressed by the mother pf the Emperor Valentinian to abandon two churches, Ambrose led a protest. He had the support of the people and for a week, they staged a sit-in-at the cathedral of Milan and refused to leave. To keep them occupied, Ambrose composed and taught them sever-al new hymns. He baptized St. Augustine, and along with Augustine, Jerome and Gregory, was declared by Pope Boniface VIII in the year 1298, one of the four great doctors of the Latin Church.
