FIRST CHRISTIAN
CHURCH (Disciples of Christ)
Bringing People
to Discipleship in Christ
The Church Bell Mar. 30, 2016 Vol. 72, Issue 7
Pastoral Ponderings
Brothers and Sisters, Welcoming new members into our life together is one of the best “fringe benefits” that comes from being a minister. It is amazing the way God touches people’s lives through the work of the church and it is a privilege to receive people on behalf of the entire congregation who come forward on Sunday morning. Each person comes forward for different reasons – the Spirit is moving through their lives in different ways – but all of them feel a connection to FCC and believe this congregation is a place where they can grow in faith. There are a host of reasons people choose to join a church, but before anyone can become a member they first have to decide to visit and there is one overwhelming reason why people decide to visit a church: they are invited. Those who study this stuff have repeatedly found that around 90% of church visitors walk into Sunday worship because someone they know – a family member, friend, neighbor, co-worker, whomever – invited them to do so. Churches grow because their members are excited about what God is doing within them and want others to experience it too. At the end of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus announces “the great commission” when he asks his followers to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). This is a hard idea for us. What does it mean to make disciples in this day and age? Are we even qualified to do that? But learning how to be better followers of Chris is something we do together; it is one of the main reasons that the church exists.

OUR MEMBERS ARE PRIORITY #1! SO, if you hear or know of someone who is or is going to be in the hospital or who has a health or other
issue for which they need prayers, please contact the church office at 636-5157 so we may add them to our prayer list. In addition, we strive to
ensure that we are in contact with all our members and would appreciate any updates you may have regarding Our Members in Care Centers and
Our Homebound Members i.e., changes in addresses, phone numbers, room numbers, etc. If we are missing someone from one of these lists,
please let us know. If you become aware they are not receiving their “Bell,” please let us know. Any other information you think would be helpful,
we will be glad to hear from you. NOTE: All prayer requests from the congregation will be left on the Prayer List for four weeks unless otherwise
requested. If after that time you wish to continue prayers for an individual(s), you will need to call the church office and request that they be kept
on the prayer list. Thank you for your assistance!

Pastoral Ponderings (continued from page 1)
By inviting people into the church – and inviting them into enjoying life with God – you help them take that first step towards becoming a disciple. Your invitation is critical for that initial step; they’re not going to take it without a personal connection. But if you can help with step one, the entire community of faith that is FCC can help them with every step after. This is the perfect time – coming right after Easter – to help people experience the joy and power of resurrection. One of my hopes is that all of us can develop an “attitude of invitation” that will allow us to always be noticing opportunities to extend that invitation into the life of faith and into this particular community of faith. Thanks for keeping your eyes open and an invitation at the ready. Stay steadfast in hope, Rev. Beau
Music Ministry ~ Gretchen Huedepohl
This year is a bit different in that FCC musicians did not present a Lenten cantata as has been our tradition. Instead, we opted to create a non-seasonal worship experience based on the call of Moses, titled “A Wimpy Prophet, A Butane Bush, and No Excuses.” Inspiration for the service comes from a composition by Ken Medema which tells the story of Moses’ encounter with God at the burning bush, found in Exodus 3 and 4. Special musical guest, David Gillespie, will present this story in song, sharing the conversation between Moses and God. It’s a powerful anthem which asks us each to examine what excuses we are holding on to in order to avoid following God’s call and demanding that we “give it up; let it go; throw it down,” trusting the rod of God which empowers us. Even as I’ve been re-learning the accompaniment to this piece, I literally get goosebumps each time I play it. Truly, you don’t want to miss this! The congregation will join the choir in singing much of the service music, both familiar hymns such as “Holy, Holy, Holy,” “Just As I Am” and “Have Thine Own Way, Lord”; classic worship songs such as “Surely the Presence of the Lord,” “Holy Ground,” and “The Potter’s Hand”; and more recent contemporary worship songs such as “Soul on Fire.” We are blessed to have the following group of instrumentalists providing accompaniment: Kirsten Suhr, my sister from NE (flute); Janna Volmert, Johanna Boyer, and Hannah Huedepohl (violin); Grant Bradshaw (viola); Kristen Foster (cello); Margaret Davis and Tyler Kaiser (trumpet); Scot Stout (piano); Tim Gaines (guitar); Jonathan Hagood (bass guitar); and Chris Loeffler (drums). (continued on next page)
SUNDAY SCHOOL FOR ALL AGES RESUMES We will resume an "all ages" Sunday School starting Sunday, May 22, 2016. This Sunday School is for those ages 2 to 102. If you have a child (or children) under the age of 10 attending, we hope that at least one parent will attend as well. The class will focus on the topic of "Prayer" and will use "stations" as its format. The same "stations" will be used for two weeks. We are still looking for volunteers to help lead the class. It is only a two week commitment! The relevant material and format will be provided by Rev. Sarah. You can sign up as a family or with a friend to help lead. The days and times we need volunteers are below. Please contact Stephanie Bell at 573-230-5609 if you are able to help!

Music Ministry (continued) Please plan to be in worship on April 10 for this special worship experience which will
include a burning bush! Feel free to invite community friends to worship with us as well! On April 17 we are excited to host our first concert of 2016. Guest artist will be trumpeter extraordinaire, Hermon Mehari, formerly of Jefferson City, as he presents an evening of jazz, alongside his group Diverse Trio. Below is a brief biography, with just a few highlights from a blossoming career. Mr. Mehari has recently returned from several performances in Japan as well as concerts in Europe this past Fall, including a benefit concert in Paris immediately following the terrorist attacks in that city.
Hermon Mehari was the recent winner of the 2015 Carmine Caruso International Trumpet Competition and a semifinalist in the 2014 Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition. In 2014 he released the CD “Our Journey” with Diverse, recorded in Paris. Mr. Mehari was the headliner of the 2014 Jazz en Tete Festival in Clermont-Ferrand, France, and was featured on the world renown saxophonist Bobby Watson’s 2013 release, “Check Cashing Day,” which honors the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
Mr. Mehari was also the winner of the 2008 National Trumpet Competition and placed 2nd in the International Trumpet Guild Competition in Sydney, Australia. As a founding member of Diverse, whose debut album reached the Top 40 on the Jazzweek Radio Charts, Hermon has performed professionally with noted saxophonists Jaleel Shaw, Logan Richardson, Bobby Watson, and Ben Van Gelder, among others. The band Diverse notably shared a double billing with Roy Haynes’ Birds of a Feather band as headliners of the 2008 Gene Harris Jazz Festival. Hermon received his Bachelors in Music in Jazz Performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music in 2010. In addition to performing, he dedicates himself to being a serious educator. He has participated in clinics and panels around the country and has served as the director of the Kansas City High School All-Star Jazz Ensemble. When not travelling to perform, Hermon calls Kansas City his home. He is an alumni of Jefferson City High School and a former trumpet student of Jefferson City’s Tim Alexander, a member of First Christian Church.
Please share this concert information with music lovers (you don’t have to be a jazz aficionado to appreciate Hermon’s talent!) and join us for what promises to be a wonderful evening of music!
