Ron’s encyclopedic knowledge of music will inform ourFirst Tuesday Salon conversation. Here’s what Rene Rodriguez said in the Miami Herald:“Part of the appeal of Searching for Sugar Man, director MalikBendjelloul’s engaging, cleverly structured documentary, is that the film isshaped like a mystery. The more we learn about the cultural and politicalimpact of Rodriguez’s music in South Africa — and the more tantalizingsnippets of his songs we hear on the soundtrack — the more we want toknow about the singer. The filmmakers travel from Cape Town to Detroit toLos Angeles, piecing together the clues of his life. He didn’t leave much togo on, and his mystique undoubtedly helped spur the growing popularity ofhis music. On one level, Searching for Sugar Man is a testament to howmusic — or painting or literature or any form of art — can take on a life fargreater than its creator intended when it happens to connect with the rightpeople at the right time.”Look forward to seeing you Tuesday evening, don’t forget to VOTE!!!Global Lens ContinuesSaturday, October 6th 10am Rosebud CinemaThis year’s Global Lens Series issponsored by Michelle Sandoval,Realtor. This year’s Spirit of the Port Townsend Film Festivalwas awarded to Jim Ewing. Here is the statementthat accompanied the glorious bronze sculpturecreated by Sara Mall Johani at Lateral Line BronzeCasting Studio:“PTFF has come a long way in the last 13 years andJim Ewing has been here from the beginning. Muchof the early planning led us to the success that weare today, a robust and utterly unique celebration offilm and community. One of the very coolest

elements at our festival, is your pass. Have you ever noticed that your firstname is much bigger than your last name? That is no accident. Our smallcommunity celebrates film on a first name basis thanks to Jim’s many hours ofwork and the custom software he created for PTFF. This year’s gorgeousrepresentation of the spirit of our festival goes to our favorite futurist, the manwho imagined 13 yrs ago that not only could we have a film festival to celebrate

Support the making of a local film by sharing your hospitalitywith the filmmakers who brought you GANDI AT THE BAT!

Needed housing for a small group of cast & crew: Stephanie Argy andAlec Boehm of Mental Slapstick (who brought you THE RED MACHINE andGANDHI AT THE BAT, both of which screened at the Port Townsend FilmFestival in 2010) are coming to Port Townsend to shoot part of their nextproject! They're looking for locals who would be willing to house some of

the cast and crew. The lodging could be a private room, a guest house, anADU, or some other simple accommodation, preferably near Downtown

or Uptown (though farther out could work, too.)The new project is called A PERSON KNOWN TO ME, and it's an 11-part

detective adventure set between 1895 and 1905; the piece to be shot inPort Townsend is a 20-minute short film, which will be the fifth of the

eleven parts, and which takes place in Port Townsend in 1898. Almost allof the cast and crew will be Port Townsend locals, but there are three

actors coming from out of town during the shoot. Here's a list (includingthe thespians' alma maters, in case you might want to house a fellow

alumnus):1) Donal Thoms-Cappello -- Donal starred in THERED MACHINE (as Eddie Doyle, the safecracker)

and appeared in GANDHI AT THE BAT (as A's firstbaseman Jimmie Foxx). He's a graduate of RutgersUniversity. He will need a place to stay starting onSunday, September 30, and he will leave on the

morning of Monday, October 8.

2) Brian Wiles -- Brian is a recent graduate of the Yale School of Drama, who also has a BA from Amherst. He will fly directlyto Port Townsend from Cambridge, MA, where he's

acting in MARIE ANTOINETTE at the AmericanRepertory Theatre, and as soon as the shoot isdone, he'll be heading straight to New Haven to

Page 21: Past newsletters - 2012...and flies (yes, flies!) for films such as 101 Dalmatians, 102 Dalmatians, That Darn Cat, The Indian and the Cupboard, and many, many more. Birds and Animals

resume the play at Yale Rep. Because his scheduleis so intense, he needs a quiet place where he can

have some solitude and get some rest. He'll bearriving on Monday, October 1 and leaving on Monday, October 8.

3) Roger Ainslie -- Another veteran of THE RED

MACHINE, Roger went to Northwestern, originallycomes from the Philadelphia area, and currently

lives and works in New York City. He'll be arriving onSunday, September 30, leaving on Friday, October 5.If you are interested in helping out with transport or

lodging, please contact Steph & Alec.

""Safety Not Guaranteed," a big hitat this year's Sundance Film Festival,is exactly what independent filmsshould be yet rarely are. It's briskand assured and never begs theaudience's indulgence. No time iswasted. The movie is, at everymoment, either funny or pushingthe story forward, or both.At the same time, it's original and odd in the best of ways. It takes as a jumping-off point a real-life advertisement, spotted by screenwriter Derek Connolly, inwhich someone was looking for a companion for a time-traveling expedition. From that material an imaginative comedy is spun, about a magazine writer(Jake M. Johnson) and two interns, a depressive young woman (Aubrey Plaza)and a shy young man (Karan Soni), who go in search of the guy who wrote thead."What a great moment for a screenwriter, stumbling on such an ad. Join aconversation with screen writing veteran, John Considine following thescreening. Lets talk about translating one little scrap of an idea into this quirkywonder of a script. SPECIAL GUEST REVEALED!!

Happy to welcome BRUCE DERN to

Page 28: Past newsletters - 2012...and flies (yes, flies!) for films such as 101 Dalmatians, 102 Dalmatians, That Darn Cat, The Indian and the Cupboard, and many, many more. Birds and Animals

PTFF in September The PortTownsend Film Festival's SpecialGuest this fall is one of Hollywood'sunique and offbeat talents: formerOscar nominee Bruce Dern("Coming Home"). He is also knownas "the man who shot John Wayne,"and it suits him. Dern has playedvillains for years, like the psychoticblimp pilot who tries to blow up theSuper Bowl in 1977's "BlackSunday."The winner of our Guess The Guestcontest wrestled with three toughclues, each less obscure than theprevious one, and none easy.Perhaps they were successfulbecause they worked as a team:Denise Maguire and Charlene Freeman are long-time pass-holders for PTFFand are looking forward to their photo op with Dern. They actually made theirguess with only two clues -- pretty impressive! The first clue said that one of Dern's characters' favorite movies could be"Rooster Cogburn," which wasn't a reference to The Duke but to a quirkycharacter named Big Bob that Dern played in the funny 1974 film "Smile." Inthat film, which Dern told us is one of his favorites, Dern's character is anofficer of a community service organization whose bizarre initiation ceremonyinvolves kissing a rooster's rear end.The second clue referenced Dern's impressive Kennedy-like political pedigree.Dern's grandfather, George Henry Dern, was governor of Utah and laterbecame Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Secretary of War. It gets better. The actor'sgodfather was Democratic presidential nominee Adlai Stevenson, and his

godmother was none other than Eleanor Roosevelt. The third clue made reference to a weird movie one of our Special Guest'srelatives made. That would be of course, Dern's famous daughter, Laura Dern, who co-starred with Dennis Hopper in director David Lynch's surreal "BlueVelvet."During his interview, Dern told a funny story about Wayne that took placeshortly before Dern shot The Duke in the back in the 1972 film, "The Cowboys."Before the shot, Dern says, "Wayne leaned over to me and whispered, 'Youknow America's gonna hate you for this.'"Dern says he replied, "Yeah, but they'll love me in Berkeley."While he is in Port Townsend this September, festival goers might see Dernwhiz by in running gear. Over his lifetime, the lanky 76-year-old star has runscores of marathons, and he says, "I still run every day."A tip of the hat to Bill Mann, a columnist for Canadian publications as well asMarketWatch/Dow Jones & Huffington Post, for his mysterious clues andbringing us the news of our Special Guest's identity. Watch for more from Bill inour festival program and occasional reviews for First Tuesday Salon films. The film opensshortly before the two rendezvousin a field — she brings her favoritebooks in a suitcase; he brings herflowers and the camping gear —and head off on a journey that's part quest, part romance, with a touch of filmnoir and a hint of the French New Wave. spouses. Elsa's dutiful contact withher husband is part of a routineconsumed with job searching, raising her two sons, and getting along with herfather-in-law. When she meets Spetim, a quiet man visiting his imprisoned wifein equally passionless encounters, they slowly find the sympathy andcompanionship missing from their lives. A prisoner amnesty, however, soonthreatens their fragile bond in this closely observed, sensual and contemplativedrama highlighting a period of subtle but profound social transformation. The series continues with CRAFT from Brazil on April 14th, then FAT, BALD,SHORT MAN from Columbia on April 21st. After a pause for the summer, theseason will resume in the fall. Port Townsend Film Institute, as educationalpartners, can offer these films for classroom use as well. Says the New York Times, "Strictly speakingMr. Hazanavicius's film is not a silentmovie. There is a lot of music on thesoundtrack and also a few strategicmoments of onscreen noise that are bothdelightfully surprising and wildly illogical. The whole conceit of the picture is spun inwillful disregard of the laws governingtime, space and sound, an embrace of the

preposterous that is perhaps more reminiscent of the spirit of early Frenchcinema than of the old Hollywood where the action takes place." Awardscontinue for this remarkable film, once turned away by mainstreamdistributors, now with 5 Academy Award nominations, Screen Actors Guild forBest Actor, top honors at The Producers Guild and Golden Globes."Following the screening, join a conversation with Rocky Friedman and PTFI fansas we explore why this film has rapidly become the talk of the industry!Free Screening: February 22nd @ 7:30pm. film in the PTFF's First Tuesdaysalon of the new year, onWednesday, Jan. 3.This film was made in 3-D, butseeing it at the Rose, it's eye-popping enough in 2-D with its rich, textured look inside a big Parisiantrain station just after WWI.Hugo Cabret -- expressive blue eyesand all -- is a 12-year-old orphan who stows away in a warren inside the trainstation, where he winds the mighty clocks and recalls his late father, whohelped build him a marvelous, human-like machine, now a broken automaton.Hugo dodges the Javert/Clouseau-like station gendarme (Sacha Baron Cohen)and befriends an imperious shopkeeper,Georges, played with his usual command by Ben Kingsley. Georges iseventually revealed to be legendary French filmmaker Georges Melies, anunderappreciated genius who cranked out 800 films, including the first science-fiction movie. Some of the one-camera shots here will leave cinephiles gasping inamazement, even as the story slows down and the film becomes an homage toMelies' filmmaking career. One reviewer says that seeing this in 3-D is essentialto getting the film's full effect, but most of those who've seen this unusual filmhere would probably disagree. I didn't see anyone asking for their money back."Hugo" is the steamiest film of the year. But not in the usual. way.
