The Hybrid Plus2 Aircool ventilatorcombines the features of the Aircoolventilator with an innovative air temperingand mixing unit utilising a single energy-efficient fan.

It has been primarily designed to be used ina single-sided ventilation strategy and tomeet the requirements of the FacilitiesOutput Specification for Priority SchoolsProgramme Phase 2, the forthcomingBuilding Bulletin 101, ‘Guidelines onventilation, thermal comfort and indoor airquality in schools’ and Building Bulletin 93,‘Acoustic design of schools: performancestandards’.

The system has been developed to provide asimple cost-effective solution for specifiersand main contractors. With a focus onindoor air quality and thermal comfort, theHybrid Plus2 Aircool is the ideal product toincorporate into schools and othereducational buildings.

Air quality and thermal comfort Heating and cooling are important inmaintaining a comfortable indoorenvironment, together with the provision of good air quality and the removal ofpollutants, especially important inmaintaining CO2 levels to below 1,500ppm.

The primary aim of a ventilation system is to ensure that there is air movementthroughout the building, circulating air sothat it does not become stale and ridding the building of pollutants by bringing freshair in and taking stale air out.

BENEFITS

The Hybrid Plus2 Aircool system can provideventilation up to 145 l/s via the fan operationoffering an energy-efficient means ofmaintaining thermal comfort in a ‘freerunning building’. The mixing of fresh airwith internal room air is an integral part ofthe design of the unit which reduces the riskof cold draughts during cooler periods.

Effective and intelligent control of theventilator is critical to maximising itsperformance. A Passivent iC8000 controller,internal CO2 and temperature sensors andalso an external temperature sensor are usedwith intelligent software to determine thedifferent operating modes and ensureautomatic, optimum thermal comfort andindoor air quality.

The iC8000 controller can work inconjunction with other building servicessuch as the heating system and can beintegrated through a building managementsystem.

Slim and sleekThe unit is one of the slimmest in its classdue to its unique internal design. Itsaesthetic, contemporary look and flexibledesign means that it can be mountedexposed or, if preferred, within a bulkhead.

Mixing modeIn winter, colder spring and autumn periodsthe Hybrid Plus2 Aircool tempers theincoming air with warmer internal air beforeit enters the space, thereby minimising therisk of cold draughts for the occupants. Bymixing and utilising any excess of heat gainswithin the space, there is no need to useadditional energy to warm the fresh air.

Warm internal air enters the unit at ceilinglevel and is also discharged across the ceilingonce mixed to ensure thermal comfort levelsare the highest possible.

Cooling modeIn peak summer conditions, the energy-efficient, low power fan can be activated topromote air movement, keeping theventilation strategy operating andtemperature under control.

When the building encounters high heatgains, the fan can be activated to purge the space more rapidly than a passiveventilation system. The fan speed willautomatically adjust to suit the temperatureand CO2 requirements within the space.

Passive modeDue to the low airflow resistance of thesystem, the Hybrid Plus2 Aircool is able tooperate in a passive mode without any needfor fan assistance. This mode offers single-sided ventilation to provide an equivalentarea of 0.054m2 and is highly cost-effectivedue to the lack of energy required tomotorise the fan unit.

The graph opposite shows the varyingventilation conditions during modes 1 and 2 of the system.

When there is a requirement for a lowvolume of air flow due to air quality,but with the need to maintain thermalcomfort in the room, the systemoperates in mode 1 (mixing). As theventilation conditions change, thesystem adapts to a mode 2 (cooling)operation where the emphasis switchesto increasing air flow and reducing theroom temperature.
