FOREWORD

In order to assist band members and parents in understanding areas of responsibility, a statement of band policy is herein set forth. Becoming familiar with this policy will enable each individual to make the most of this great opportunity of being a member of the Pass Christian School District Band Program, becoming a better person, and achieving a higher level of musicianship.

We firmly believe each student should improve through regular practice. The happiest student is the student who improves through regular habits of practice and daily progress. He or she must not only know right from wrong but must be able to stand for high principles and develop an elevated sense of purpose toward, which he or she is willing to work. Responsibility is the focus behind any level of achievement within this program. We intend to conduct ourselves in manners that will facilitate the learning of all students.

The band program at Pass Christian forms a vital and important part of the total middle and high school life. The band represents a visible and highly disciplined segment of the school. The performance of the band at school assemblies, sporting events, concerts, parades, contests, as well as many community events, adds a great deal of color and life to the Pass Christian community. It is possible, by setting your schedule in a reasonable manner, to be in the band and still maintain a high scholastic standing.

The main emphasis of the Pass Christian Band program is on musicianship and citizenship. Achieved through hard work, it is the pride of a job well done that makes our efforts worthwhile. The success of the organization will lead to the success of the individual.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTORS

Dear Students,

Congratulations on your decision to be a part of the 2015-2016 Pass Christian Band program. This is a brand new year full of new experiences. In fact, our program is completely built on these attributes.

Countless hours have been and will be invested in the name of the Pass Christian Band program. We, as the directors, know that the hard work is worth the outcome. Over the last few years many great things have been accomplished by the band, and we look forward to another great year of new experiences and undertakings. MESSAGE FROM THE BAND BOOSTERS

Dear Pass Christian Band Parents,

As your Band Booster officers, we are here to help facilitate the smooth operation of the many activities that both the middle school and high school bands undertake. We have the responsibility of helping the bands by offsetting the cost of trips, uniforms, band fees, and many other costs associated with the band. We also help chaperone trips and work with the band directors to provide a parent’s point of view and improve communication.

Our goal this year is to have several fund raisers in the fall in order to help offset the cost of upcoming band trips for both the middle school and high school bands. Mr. Robinson is in charge of coordinating the fund raisers. We are looking for new and inventive ways to raise money so any ideas you may have for raising funds are much appreciated.

Working with you for the betterment of our children,

Carrie Dixson Cornelius Anderson Vicki Meyer Jep Lafontaine -President -Vice President -Treasurer/Secretary -MS Treasurer

PRIVATE LESSONS

We currently provide private instructors who come to the school to teach both individual and group lessons for the following instruments: flute, clarinet, saxophone, brass, and percussion. All students are strongly encouraged to take lessons. The best investment a parent can make in their child’s musical future is to enroll him/her in either our private or group lesson program. To register for lessons for the 2015-16 school year, please call the high school band room at 228-452-6771 or e-mail Mr. McAdams at [email protected].

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Band members are expected to make ALL performances and all rehearsals; band is a performance class. Excusable absences include severe illness (doctor’s note required) or death in the immediate family. An absence for any other reason must be excused by Mr. McAdams (high school) or Mr. Shiro (middle school) at least two weeks in advanced by submitting the Rehearsal/Performance Absence Excuse Application Form. This is in addition to the Conflict Sheet. Failure to do so will result in the absence being automatically unexcused. Submission of the form does not mean automatic acceptance of the absence. Doctor or dentist appointments are not excusable absences. Please see a director to obtain a copy of the form. In addition, students are expected to be on time for each rehearsal and performance and remain for the entire rehearsal and performance.

Band is a group activity, and we depend on all participants to do their part by being present at all rehearsals and performances. Always contact the director (by e-mail or calling the band hall) if an emergency arises or if you will be tardy. Be certain to leave a message if you call the high school, and there is no answer. This does not necessarily excuse your absence or tardiness. UNEXCUSED ABSENCES FROM REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES ARE UNACCEPTABLE!!!

! 10

HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND ABSENCE POLICY

Unexcused Absence #1: probation/student conference Unexcused Absence #2: moved to temporary alternate status/parent conference Unexcused Absence #3: permanently lose spot in show Unexcused Absence #4: student will be removed from the band program

*Second unexcused tardy equals an unexcused absence

*Unexcused absence from a performance will result in the student being automatically moved to alternate position. Unexcused absence from a rehearsal will result in the student’s spot being followed (shadowed) by an alternate (or the student may be moved down one chair placement during concert band).

HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND ALTERNATES

Every great band program has alternates - that is, extra members who can fill in for missing people. In the Pass Christian High School Band, there are no permanent alternates or permanent spots; individual status is constantly re-evaluated as the marching season progresses. The way to avoid becoming an alternate is to know your music and avoid unexcused absences from rehearsals or performances.

Alternate Policies

1. Alternates will initially be chosen through auditions at the end of the school year and/or through camp attendance.

2. Once chosen, the alternate will learn a position in the show by sharing a spot with another student (shadow a spot).

3. An alternate will have opportunities to gain a regular spot by replacing people who miss practice or are unable to play his/her music or march his/her spot.

4. Everyone, including alternates, who attend rehearsals, will go on all band trips, attend games, and play in the stands.

5. Alternates will march for all Pre-game shows and Parades. All alternates will be involved in the competition show in some way.

UNIFORMS

Middle School band uniforms are worn for all designated Middle School performances. The uniform consists of the PCMS Band polo shirt. This band polo shirt is to be worn with black dress pants and dark dress shoes.

The High School Marching Band uniform will be worn for all High School designated band performances. Any exception to this policy will be indicated. The alternate concert band uniform will be black and white concert dress: ladies – black knee to ankle length dress or black dress slacks with white blouse; gentlemen – black dress pants, white long-sleeved dress shirt, black dress socks, black dress shoes, black dress belt, and solid black tie.

The Pass Christian Band Booster Organization is charged with the responsibility of maintaining the High School band uniforms. Since the beginning of Pass Christian High School, the Boosters have made many uniform additions and have purchased necessary replacement parts for the uniforms.

CLEANING – The high school uniforms will be cleaned by the boosters twice a year (once during marching season and again at the end of the school year). If alterations have been made to your uniform, see Mr. McAdams, a booster officer, or uniform worker about un-altering it before turning it in at the end of the school year. Students are responsible for any lost or damaged uniforms. Take note of uniform care instructions. Replacement cost for lost or damaged uniform parts: hats-$50, pants-$150, jackets-$550

HIGH SCHOOL UNIFORM FITTING - It is very important to the overall look of the band that each individual band member be fitted properly in his/her uniform.

1. The fitting will take place during band camp in July. 2. Bring marching shoes for proper fitting of pant length. 3. If the student has hair that goes below the collar, it should be put up for proper fitting of the hat. 4. If any alterations need to be made, a note will be pinned to the uniform. Please make the

alterations required and return the uniform to the uniform closet on the first week of school in August.

HIGH SCHOOL UNIFORM RULES

1. Wear BLACK, calf- length socks with the band shoes. 2. Hang uniform neatly on the hanger supplied with the uniform. The trousers should be hung

neatly to insure a pressed crease at the next performance. 3. DO NOT ALTER a uniform without permission from the band director. You may NOT cut the

uniform when altering. You may NOT machine stitch a uniform unless it is a basting stitch. 4. The uniform is the responsibility of the student to whom it is issued. 5. Student name should be written inside of the band shoes and gloves. The student name should

also be written on a label and placed inside the hat and on the hat box. 6. All shoes must be polished before performances. 7. The band T-shirt should be worn under the band jacket. 8. Jewelry may NOT be worn. This includes earrings, watches, rings, etc. 9. Hair cannot be on or below the collar. If hair is long, it must be worn up with the ability to tuck

it into the band hat. 10. Cell phones should not be visible while in uniform. 11. Uniforms must be worn correctly at all times. Jackets are always completely on or completely off,

and hats are always worn properly as instructed. 12. Suspenders must remain up at all times. If suspenders keep falling off your shoulders, see the

uniform workers for an adjustment. 13. Students are not allowed to change on the bus unless instructed to do so by a band director.

! 13

name, coat number, pant number and hat number. Place this card in the clear sleeve on the left side of the uniform bag.

Example Name: John Smith Coat Number: 124 Pant Number: 124 Hat Number: 25

6. Place the hat and hat box inside the garment bag at the bottom of the uniform. Place your band shoes and socks in the back zipper pocket so they will not soil your uniform.

7. Be certain your name and number have been entered into the uniform database or given to the uniform workers before walking away.

8. Failure to follow these procedures will result in the student being liable for any missing uniform parts.

INDIVIDUAL STUDENT ACCOUNTS, EXPENSES, AND FUNDRAISERS

Receipts will be available for pick up in the basket in the band room office two weeks from the date of deposit. If the student leaves the program before graduation, money left in the account will be dispensed as follows:

1. Credit from profits from band fundraisers will remain in Band Booster bank accounts. 2. Money deposited by student or parent (of non-fundraiser money) will be returned if the balance

exceeds $10. 3. Credit can be donated to the band or transferred to another band member of the same

immediate family, but not to a band member outside the family.

PASS CHRISTIAN BAND BOOSTERS

The Band Boosters are the support group for the band program. It is their responsibility to raise funds to buy and maintain instruments and uniforms, buy non-musical equipment (flags, props, etc.), and assist with raising funds for other necessary services and equipment. The band boosters also do much of the organizational work involved with student fundraisers, camp, and travel. Any adult is eligible to join the Band Booster organization.

Band Booster officers are elected each spring. Anyone wishing to run for office can contact one of the current officers or Mr. McAdams by the end of February. The office of treasurer will be a position that requires an application with references to be filled out. All officers are required to submit to a background check conducted by the school district. Booster officers meet with the band directors at least once a month in the High School Band room. For further information, please see the Band Booster By-laws.

PARENT - STUDENT - TEACHER COMMUNICATION

Improved communication between the teacher, student and parent can resolve many of the problems and answer many questions regarding band related activities and expectations. The band utilizes the following communication tools to help keep parents and students informed:

o Letters sent home via student

o Letters sent home via US Mail

o Phone calls

o Text messages

o Band website/E-mails/charmsoffice.com/Remind

It is imperative that the teacher maintains updated phone numbers and E-mail addresses. Each parent and student should submit a change of contact information to the band director if initial contact information changes. Parents and students MUST register on charmsoffice.com. Our school code is PCBand and instructions are listed on how to register. Students must have their student ID number in order to register. Registration will insure that parents and students stay updated on the student account balance and important information pertaining to the band program.

STUDENTS I have read the Pass Christian Band Manual, including the rules and regulations set forth and will comply with them. I will act as a responsible, committed band member and citizen while representing our school and community. I realize that I am making a commitment to the Pass Christian School Band program and my fellow band persons to be at all rehearsals and performances unless there is a death in the immediate family or in case of severe illness (doctor’s note required). Any other absence must be cleared through the Band Director by completing and turning in the Absence Request Form at least two weeks prior to the expected absence. I realize that doctor appointments should not be made that will conflict with any rehearsal times either during or after school. I am aware that band is a full year commitment and each student’s participation will be re-evaluated at the end of the semester to determine future participation in the Pass Christian Band Program. I am also aware that I may not be allowed to attend trips and special events due to my behavior in class, my grades or my receiving ISI, ISS or OSS.

PARENTS I, the undersigned parent or guardian, have read and understand the policies as set forth in the Pass Christian Band Manual. I also grant full permission for my child to be an active member of the Pass Christian School District Band, to travel with the band to all scheduled band functions, and to allow my child’s photo to be published on the band website and/or DonorsChoose.org. I also allow my child’s name and photo to be published in local newspapers in order to help promote the Pass Christian Band program. In addition, my child has full permission to attend all band functions. Furthermore, I understand that I must meet all financial obligations. I am aware that band fees are non-refundable and trip payments may be non-refundable (even if the case of ineligibility is due to grades and/or disciplinary actions including being placed in ISI, ISS or OSS). I am aware that doctor appointments (whenever possible) should be scheduled at times other than band class or band rehearsal times. If my child, for any reason, does not complete the full year with the band, I am aware that I will still be obligated for the entire band fee.
