Pascuala Ilabaca y Fauna

Pascuala Ilabaca is one of the leading exponents of the new prolific scene of young Chilean singer-songwriters. Her music is rooted in traditional sounds but has the ability to incorporate shades from jazz, pop and rock, and influences gathered throughout her life in such distant places as India or Mexico. On stage, she has a strong scenic presence, almost always armed with her accordion; and her voice has the power to sweeten the rhythms and melodies of the band that accompanies her: Fauna.

Pascuala Ilabaca was born in Valparaíso in 1985 and was interested in music since child-hood. She learnt it at the Pontifícal University of her native city, but she immediately understood that she had to extricate herself from the overly stringent rules imposed by her professors. In her debut album “Pascuala canta a Violeta” (2008), full of songs based on Chilean folklore, she incorporated a Hindu table and electric guitars. “Pascuala canta a Violeta” was a homage to Violeta Parra, her great inspiration, and a practice of recovery of the traditional sounds of her country. This action persuaded the then President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, to invite her to a tour through India, a country where Pascuala Ilabaca had lived as a child.

Convinced of the necessity of breaking musical schemes, Pascuala Ilabaca settled down again in India for a year to go deeply into the sounds and rhythms of that Asian country. From that experience two albums were born, both published in 2010. The first, “Perfume o Veneno”, was recorded with her side project Samadi and was strongly influenced by Hindu music. The second, already recorded with Fauna, was named “Diablo Rojo, Diablo Verde” and explored more purely Chilean sounds as the cumbia, the troteor the cueca. However, she did not stop adding her own ingredients from more modern recipes, some as remote from the folklore as drum’n’bass.

2010 was a talisman year for Pascuala Ilabaca, as she also won the Guitarpin de Oro from the Festival Huaso de Olmué and the Audience Award for Best Chilean Videoclip for “Lamenta la Canela”. The culmination came with the Bicentennial Celebration, which was held at the National Stadium of Chile, where Pascuala Ilabaca played before 50.000 people alongside Chilean bands as influential as Inti Illimani. She ended the year with more than 90 concerts, after going round the whole country with her band Fauna and her inseparable accordion.

In 2011, Pascuala Ilabaca made her first European tour. There were twenty concerts in several cities in Germany, France, Spain and Belgium. She also performed in Argentina and Mexico and participated in the Anniversary Concert for Violeta Parra which was held at the Municipal Theatre of Valparaíso. In March 2012 she returned to Barcelona to per-form at the prestigious festival BarnaSants and she also played in Lisboa. In summer she embarked on a new European tour with a new album under her arm: “Busco Paraíso” which led her to perform at the German festival TFF Rudolstadt. In 2013 a new European tour, participation in the Festival Lollapalooza Chile, a long tour for Peru and Colombia, presentation at Bafim in Buenos Aires and guest at the Festival de San Juan in Argentina among many other landmarks.

“BUSCO PARAÍSO”The third album of Pascuala Ilabaca, “Busco Paraíso”, is a step more in her fusion of traditional Chilean music with other rhythms. In this case, the singer-songwriter has been influenced by indie music, incorporating characteristic arrangements of noise (“El tren a Kanyakumari”) and a drum machine (“No es nuez”). There are also many elements of jazz and rock. All this without giving up on her sweet voice, her accordion and the folk root of her music. The album has been very well recieved in Chile, widely praised by critics and has reached number 1 online download in Chile. She has also won the “Vox Populi” Award for the best album in the World Beat category at the Independent Music Awards in United States.

"It’s worthwhile to follow closely the BarnaSants festival program, because sometimes when you least expect it, the surprise arrives. Last week at Luz de Gas, I had the chance to discover the Chilean artist Pascuala Ilabaca. I didn’t have any reference to her, I had never heard her before, and even less had seen her live or on youtube. And the truth is that it was a very rewarding find. She is a fresh, uninhibited, vibrant singer who mixes the sounds of her country roots with modern rhythms. Accompanied by the band Fauna, this girl who picks up the legacy of the famous Violeta Parra, is a first class scenic animal.

Either on the keyboard, or with a huge accordion, Pascuala Ilabaca made the audience dance, decisively, energetica-lly, without any additional or strategic persuasions. On this occasion she presented her third and latest album, "Diablo Rojo, Diablo Verde," which has been released in Europe. I hope to see her again soon. Or at least, it would be a good thing because she is one of the most promising young artists I've seen recently... " Pep Triboulet
