Bath International Music Festival kicks off this year with the city wide celebration, Party in the City, spreading through the streets and over 43 venues with more than 150 exciting bands, singers and performers. T

his year’s highlights include Sing and Samba bringing a tropical flavour, Turbo the Disco Turtle — a moving sculpture that doubles as a sound system, and rock’n’roll from Bite the Buffalo, who

were the main support act for Robert Plant and The Sensational Shapeshifters, in Parade Gardens. We’ve also joined up again with the national initia-tive Museums at Night, with museums here in Bath and across the country flinging open their doors for late night explorations.

This year Party in the City continues throughout the Festival, with free music on the bandstand in Parade Gardens on the first weekend, 16/17 May, and again on Sunday 24 May. There is also a free Family Music Day including more music from local bands, plus more delights during the week — see The Party Goes On page for more information.

The fun does not stop, with the 10 day Bath International Music Festival running from 16 — 26 May. We are bringing you a soul-stirring mix of music, including major international stars such as the South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, the legendary singer Sir Willard White with the Bath Philharmonia, the very hot Molotov Jukebox and an amazing live performance of music composed by Will Gregory, of Goldfrapp, played live to the silent film classic He Who Gets Slapped. The classical programme features a host of well-known and emerging stars, plus a three concert residency with one of the greatest pianists of his generation, Steven Osborne, including a candlelit performance of Messiaen’s massive Vingt Regards Sur L’Enfant Jesus. There’s also lots of jazz, world and folk music, including Orphy Robinson’s Black Top, the delightful Gwyneth Herbert, the amazing Hot Sardines from New York, and a very special premiere of the new collaboration between emerging folk star Emily Portman and Sam Sweeney of Bellowhead.

This excellent music will be placed in our World Heritage setting, taking you not only to iconic plac-es such as Bath Abbey, but also to lesser known glories such as the Cleveland Pools, the UK’s only surviving Georgian lido, with Red Note Ensem-ble. We also go to the beautiful Capability Brown landscape at Newton Park, with an afternoon of Georgian Pleasures, and to St Swithin’s, Bath’s only surviving Georgian church, for two concerts of music by Bach from leading harpsichordist and conductor, John Butt, and the Dunedin Consort.

With over 150 performances on offer during Party in The City the choices can be a little daunting. Where to start? What not to miss? Worry not, we’ve teamed up with the world famous Natural Theatre Company who will guide you through the musical streets of Bath, safely deliver you to concerts and gigs and entertain you every step of the way.

Meet at the bottom of Milsom Street to join the free tours which leave every 15 minutes between 6pm and 7pm. Tours last approximately 1 ½ hours.

Street PerformanceAs well as everything going on at the Party in the City venues don’t miss all the spectacular street performances. From Carnival Samba bands to Wandering Shakespearian Bards, expect spectacular encounters with everything from the spectacular roaming DJ Disco Turtle to Morris Dancers with smoke machines!

Mac Seka 6.30 — 7.10pm Mac Seka is a Senegalese singer song-writer. His fingerstyle guitar blends West African rhythms with folk and country melodies to create beautiful unique harmonies.

Broose 7.20 — 8pm Broose established himself in Texas as an influential singer songwriter, collaborating with bands such as Pop Poppins and TOOMuchTV. Tonight he will be performing some well-loved originals from his accomplished solo catalogue.

BATH ABBEY FESTIVAL COMMISSION

Down the Rabbit Hole6 — 6.45pmOpening the Music Festival with a joyous journey into children’s imagi-nations; this year’s Schools Procession and Commission are going ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’ as part of our cross festi-val celebrations of the 150th Anniversa-ry of Alice in Wonderland.

Local school children have created special costumes with artist Edwina Bridgeman and will process through the streets of Bath accompanied by musicians from Action On Hearing Loss Day Services. The procession will lead you to the Abbey where you will be greeted by our choir of school children exploring their own Wonderlands in song, created by the children working with musicians Zoe Palmer and Gene-vieve Wilkins.

Bath Spa University Choir8 — 8.20pmThe BSU Choir, directed by Francis Faux, is the main choral ensemble at Bath Spa University. This unmissable performance will showcase a world premiere of Nobuo Uematsu’s Hymn of the Fayth as well as music by Gorecki and Ola Gjeilo.

The Bath Chorus8.30 — 8.50pmRegarded as one of Baths leading choirs, The Bath Chorus has performed at concert venues across the UK and are led by Grenville Jones. The auditioned mixed-voice choir always give uplifting performances at Party in the City!

Bath Community Gospel Choir, Young Carers South West & Bath Philharmonia9.15 — 10pmYoung carers from Gloucestershire, BANES and Wiltshire come together with Bath Community Gospel Choir to perform original music about their lives. 60 Young carers from across the South West have worked with the Bath Philarmonia Music in Action team and Bath Community Gospel Choir to per-form their own music at the headline slot in Bath Abbey for Party in the City 2015.

FOREST OF IMAGINATION

Forest of Imagination is taking over Queen Square from 15 — 18 May to present a playful programme of installations, artworks and work-shops. Opening on 15 May at 6pm with a performance by Walcot State Choir at 7.45pm.

THE FORUM CAFÉ

Ramshackle Orchestra 7.05 — 7.25pmA multi-generational community string orchestra (8 — 73!) recently created by Radio Banska fiddler Nina Trott to perform an atmospheric, rootsy and eclectic repertoire of Celtic folk, gypsy tunes, Klezmer laments and mysterious airs from the wilder reaches of Hungary and Transylvania.

Bath Bellas6.20 — 6.50pmBath Bellas is a small student-run women’s chamber choir from Bath Spa University. Under musical director and founder of the choir, Holly Adams, the small group of music students sing a range of styles from classical music to jazz, musical theatre and a cappella pop tunes.

Kilter’s Unsung Choir 7 — 7.30pmKilter is running the Unsung project 2014/15. Young people are writing song lyrics about the unsung aspects of their lives and Kilter is setting them to music and teaching them to professional adult choirs.

Isobel Holly7.40 — 8.10pmIsobel Holly is a young singer from Bath who is a regular performer at the Party in the City with her own unique style of folk/pop songs as well as favourite covers.

Pete Webber9 — 9.20pm Pete Webber, Bristol-based guitarist, songwriter, banjo & mandolin player has shared stages with Nick Harper, Howe Gelb, Robyn Hitchcock, and many other respected acoustic artists. New album ‘Until The Water Runs Clean’ released in June.
